Opening Faceoff
USA Hockey's Board of Directors overwhelmingly
passed all aspects of the Progressive Checking Skill
Development Program during its 2011 Annual Congress.
The program includes the following elements:
It encourages more body contact in the pre-body
checking age categories by providing more training and
support for coaches and referees; and encouraging more
legal body contact in the pre-body checking age
categories through “Point of Emphasis” rule #1 passed by
the Board.
It tightens the standard of play for intimidation hits in the
legal body checking age categories. Beginning in the
2011-12 season, legal body checking in games will begin
at the Bantam age level (ages 13-14).
Beginning in 2011-12, each USA Hockey coach will be
required to take an age-specific training module which
will provide training information consistent with longterm athlete and childhood development principles for
the age category the coach will be engaged with. Each
module will include training information for body
contact and checking.
Each season, USA Hockey officials attend clinics that
review points of emphasis relating to the standard of play.
These 2011-12 clinics will focus on allowing more body

contact consistent with the rules in pre-checking age
categories and a tighter standard of play for roughing,
crosschecking, boarding, charging, high-sticking and
other intimidation hits in the legal body checking
divisions.
USA Hockey will monitor the on-ice management of
games with regular reports from local referee-in-chiefs,
coach-in-chiefs and Association Coaching and Education
(ACE) administrators to USA Hockey's national office
staff in Colorado Springs.
USA Hockey will conduct research on the effect of the
Progressive Checking Skill Development Program on
risk reduction and skill development. The results of the
research will be published when completed.
The Board also passed rules that prohibit any check that
comes in contact with the head or neck. The goal of this
rule is to make the player more responsible for actions
that make contact to the head or neck similar to rules now
in place for stick infractions to the head. A goal of the
Progressive Checking Skill Development Program is to
enhance skill development consistent with the American
Development Model and its long-term athlete
development principles.

2011-12 USA HOCKEY SLED TEAM
ANNOUNCED
Ohio Girl Wins Degree Award
USA Hockey and Degree Deodorant announced on
August 3 the winner of the inaugural Degree Cool &
Confident Kid Award. Abby Goldschmidt, a ten-year old
from Orange, Ohio, was selected from hundreds of
entries as this year's female Cool & Confident Award
winner.
As part of her prize, Abby and her team, the Gilmour
Sabres, will participate in a VIP skills clinic led by
Brianne McLaughlin, a player on the past two U.S.
Women's National Teams and the goaltender for the
2010 Olympic team, Thursday, Aug. 4. Her team will
also receive $500 to help with equipment costs and team
travel.
From bouncing back from injury to helping a teammate,
tweens around the country submitted stories about their
moments of success and how they aim to inspire others
to challenge themselves.
"We are pleased to recognize Abby as our inaugural
female winner," said Dave Ogrean, executive director of
USA Hockey. "As a key partner of USA Hockey,
Degree's Cool and Confident Kid Award program
underscores the importance of building confidence both
on and off the ice."
Goldschmidt's story sets an example of how other
tweens can successfully overcome their sweat-inducing
moments. "My mom started a learn-to-play clinic, the
'Momsters,' but had no one to run their practices. I
volunteered to help and was given a whistle and a
chance," says Abby. "Sharing some of the great drills
and relay-races I've learned, I saw how much fun they
were having, and quickly forgot about being nervous!"
NOTES: The Degree Cool & Confident Kid Award and
Degree's sponsorship of USA Hockey is part of a larger
Unilever mission to provide product solutions that help
free tweens from odor and discomfort. For expert tips,

Rolston Leaves for AHL Job
Ron Rolston, who has spent the last
seven years as a head coach at USA
Hockey’s National Team Development
Program, has resigned to accept a
position as head coach of the Rochester
Americans, the American Hockey
League affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres.
Rosters for both the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team
and U.S. National Developmental Sled Hockey Team
were announced August 2 by USA Hockey.
The 2011-12 U.S. National Sled Hockey Team features
15 returning players from last year's squad and 11
players who won the gold medal with the U.S.
Paralympic Sled Hockey Team at the 2010 Paralympic
Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C.
The roster was selected following tryouts held in
Rochester, N.Y., last month. Team USA will skate at
several international events during the course of the year
leading up to the 2011 International Paralympic
Committee Ice Sledge Hockey World Championship
next April in Hamar, Norway.
"For the first time seeing this pool of players, I was
extremely impressed," said Jeff Sauer, who was named
head coach of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team last
month. "We've put together a strong group of players
that bodes well for Norway while also showing promise
for continued development towards the 2014
Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia."
Among the returnees from last year's U.S. National Sled
Hockey Team are goalies Steve Cash (Overland, Mo.)
and Jen Yung Lee (San Antonio, Texas); defensemen
Tyler Carron (Berthoud, Colo.), Taylor Chace (Hampton
Falls, N.H.), Jimmy Connelly (Galloway, N.J.), Nikko
Landeros (Berthoud, Colo.) and Josh Pauls (South
Plainfield, N.J.); and forwards Tim Jones (Mt. Ephraim,
N.J.), Taylor Lipsett (Richardson, Texas), Daniel
McCoy (Cheswick, Pa.), Kevin McKee (Davenport,
Iowa), Adam Page (Lancaster, N.Y.), Rico Roman
(Portland, Ore.), Alexi Salamone (Grand Island, N.Y.)
and Greg Shaw (Park City, Utah).
Rounding out the squad will be former U.S. Paralympic
Sled Hockey Team member Brad Emmerson (Amherst,
N.Y.) and Team USA newcomer Josh Sweeney (Phoenix,
Ariz.). For the full roster, click here.
Meanwhile, the 17-man roster for the 2011-12 U.S.
National Developmental Sled Hockey Team was also
selected following the 2011 USA Hockey Sled Hockey
Player Development Camp and U.S. National Sled
Hockey Team tryout held in Rochester, N.Y., in July.
The roster includes eight returnees from last year's
squad, including goalie Justin Kreger (Waterford, Wis.);
defensemen Tyler Anderson (Jenison, Mich.), John
Mollica (The Plains, Ohio), Sam Mumper (Dublin,
Ohio) and Mason Newbold (Lockport, N.Y.); and
forwards Raymond Beck (Sicklerville, N.J.), Nevin
"Ron has had a tremendous influence on the continued
rise of American players through seven successful years
at the NTDP,” said Jim Johannson, assistant executive
director of hockey operations at USA Hockey. "He's
going to a wonderful organization in Buffalo and we
know Ron will be an outstanding coach at the
professional level. We wish him and his family nothing
but the very best."
The longest-tenured and most decorated coach in the
history of USA Hockey's National Team Development
Program, Ron Rolston guided U.S. squads to
championships in three international tournaments in
2010-11, including a gold-medal performance at the
2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Men's
U18 Championship. Rolston, who had previously led
the U.S. Men's National Under-18 team to a gold medal
in the 2005 and 2009 IIHF World Men's U18
Championship and a silver medal at the 2007 event,
helped Team USA collect its third straight world title in
2010-11.
In addition, Rolston's U.S. National Under-18 Team
posted a 12-9-1-2 (W-L-OTL-SOL) record in United
States Hockey League play in 2010-11, helping the
NTDP reach the USHL postseason for the first time.
"Ron has done a tremendous job," said Scott Monaghan,
senior director of operations at the NTDP. "Not only is
he an excellent coach, but he's a great person too. To say
we'll miss him is an understatement."
A nationwide search for Rolston’s replacement is
underway.

International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World
Championship in Burlington, Vt. The event will take
place April 7-14 at Gutterson Fieldhouse and Cairns
Arena and features the top female hockey players in the
world.
"We're thrilled to be bringing this event back to the
United States for the first time in a decade," said Dave
Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. "We look

the world to Burlington and we know our fans are in for

compete for the gold medal."
“Vermont is proud to be hosting the 2012 Women’s
World Championship,” said Peter Shumlin, governor of
the state of Vermont. “Vermont has a long hockey
tradition and as the father of two daughters I can tell you
that this tournament is a great way to show young
female athletes that there are opportunities for women to
excel in sports. I hope that having the opportunity to
attend the Women's World Championship will inspire
more girls to play hockey.”
Home to the University of Vermont men's and women's
NCAA Division I ice hockey teams, Gutterson
Fieldhouse will serve as the primary venue for the event.
All U.S. and Canada games will be played at Gutterson,
as well as the playoff and medal rounds. Cairns Arena,
less than three miles from Gutterson, will serve as the
secondary facility for the event.
Team USA has won the last three world championships
and will begin its quest for No. 4 at the eight-nation
tournament, beginning on April 7 when it faces Canada
at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
"It's not too often that our fans in the New England
region have a chance to see the best players in the world
in their own backyard," said Katey Stone, U.S. Women's
National Team head coach. "I anticipate the atmosphere
will be electric .... just the way it should be for an event
of this magnitude."
Ticket packages will go sale August 1 for the general
public. The Gutterson Fieldhouse Package ($290)
includes tickets to all 12 games at Gutterson, seat
selection at the time of purchase, a commemorative

looking for its first gold medal on home soil in the event.
Team USA earned silver at Lake Placid and
Minneapolis... Media accreditation information will be

Sled Teams Name Coaches
Jeff Sauer
Jeff Sauer (Madison, Wis.) will
serve as the head coach of the
U.S. National Sled Hockey
Team, while Mike MacMillan
(Buffalo, Minn.) will take on the
role of head coach of the U.S. National Developmental
Sled Hockey Team for the 2011-12 season, USA Hockey
announced.
"It's terrific to have Jeff and Mike involved with our sled
hockey program," said Dave Ogrean, executive director
of USA Hockey. "Both have a vast amount of
experience and will be terrific mentors to our players
and great ambassadors for the sport and our country."
Sauer has coached a wide array of U.S. teams
throughout his career. He was the head coach of the U.S.
Men's National Team at the 1995 International Ice
Hockey Federation World Men's Championship in
Stockholm, Sweden, and at the 1990 Goodwill Games in
Seattle, Wash., along with serving as head coach for the
U.S. Men's Select Team at the 1989 Pravda Cup in
Leningrad, Soviet Union, and at the 1997 Tampere Cup
in Tampere, Finland.
In addition, Sauer has helped select the last five U.S.
Deaflympic Ice Hockey Teams, while leading the team
as head coach in the last three Winter Deaflymipcs.
Most recently, he guided the U.S. Deaflympic squad to
a gold-medal finish at the 2007 Winter Deaflympics in
Salt Lake City, Utah. Sauer also is currently a member
of USA Hockey's International Council and Disabled
Hockey Committee, and is president of the American
Hearing Impaired Hockey Association.
Sauer’s illustrious 31-year NCAA Division I college
coaching career featured 655 wins (seventh all-time) and
two national championships, both of which came during
his tenure with the University of Wisconsin (1983,
1990).
Sauer led Wisconsin to three NCAA Men's Frozen Four
appearances, 12 NCAA tournament berths, six Western
Collegiate Hockey Association playoff titles and two
WCHA regular-season crowns in 20 seasons as head
coach (1982-2002). He also spent 11 years (1971-82) as
head coach of the men's ice hockey team at his alma
mater, Colorado College, where he was twice named
WCHA Coach of the Year (1972, 1975).
In 2000, Sauer was recognized with USA Hockey's
Distinguished Achievement Award. Sauer was also
named to the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004
and received the John ‘Snooks’ Kelly Founders Award
from the American Hockey Coaches Association for his
contributions to the overall growth and development of
the sport of ice hockey in the United States.
"It's always a great honor to be selected to coach a
national team," said Sauer, who currently serves as the
assistant to the commissioner of the WCHA. "I'm very
excited to have the opportunity to work with USA
Hockey and I'm looking forward to getting on the ice
and working with all the players."
Meanwhile, Mike MacMillan will begin his first season
as head coach of the U.S. National Developmental Sled
Hockey Team. In his current position as National
Coach-in-Chief and Coaching Section Director for USA
Hockey, MacMillan has traveled across the country to
speak at coaching symposiums and has been on
countless committees to advance the game and further
educate coaches.
“I'm really excited about the opportunity and very
honored to be asked by USA Hockey to be put in this
position," MacMillan said. "I look forward to working
with the athletes involved and putting together a
coaching staff that has as much passion and pride to
represent USA Hockey as I do."
MacMillan is the head boys' ice hockey coach at Buffalo
(Minn.) High School, a position he's held for 16 years
(1996-2011), and has received the Minnesota Hockey
Coaches Association Section Coach of the Year in 2002
and the Dave Peterson Award in 2001, which is given
annually to a high school coach who has shown great
leadership in developing youth hockey either locally or
statewide. MacMillan is also the Minnesota Hockey
High Performance Player Development Director.

AUGUST 12, 2011
Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame Inductee Profile
Bob Mathson
Bob never played any
formal hockey, but grew
up with the Blackhawks
as
his
favorite
professional
sports
team. As a kid, he would
take the old Glenview
Bus from Northbrook to
the Skokie Swift and
then a couple buses to
the Stadium to watch his
beloved Hawks.
His heavy involvement
in the sport began in 1982, when his son Scott, brought
home a Learn to Skate flier from kindergarten and he
asked if he could play hockey. That was it – hook, line,
and sinker – the Mathson family became members of the
Hockey community. Bob learned early on that he could
not coach; he simply didn’t have the temperament so he
became involved in the administrative side of the sport.
He was a team manager, and then worked his way
through the Schaumburg Kings organization to
eventually becoming President. He put together a
campaign to have a rink built in Schaumburg and
presented the Park District with over 10,000 signatures
supporting a rink, but the park district would have
nothing to do with an ice rink.
Realizing that there would not be enough players to field
a Peewee team, the Mathson’s left the Schaumburg
Kings. While with the King’s, Bob served as their
representative to the Northern Illinois Hockey League
and was elected to Vice President of that league for
several years.
In 1990, the Mathson’s moved to Naperville and Bob
got involved in the Naperville North High School
program serving as its President from 1993 thru 1996.
At that time he orchestrated the restructure of the Metro
West High School Hockey League, opening it up to
more competitive teams.
Bob’s hockey interest grew to a broader prospective
when he was asked to join the AHAI Board of Directors
in 1987 where over the years, he served as the
Chairperson of the Districting, Suspension, Rules and
Ethics, Player Development and High School
Committees. He served the Hockey community as
President of AHAI for five years learning more and
more about the sport. Over time he developed a broad
base knowledge of the sport and eventually was asked to
become part of High School Hockey for USA Hockey
where he was elected to chair that Section and became a
Director of USA Hockey. While serving in that capacity,
Bob worked to establish a National High School
Tournament which had its inauguration in April of 2010,
here in Chicago. Today, hockey is the only high school
sport to have a National Tournament!
Bob retired from the banking industry in September
2010, giving him and his wife LeeAnn, more time to
spend with their family, especially their grandchildren.
It also provided Bob with a little more time for the
greatest sport in the world.
The Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame was established to
recognize and honor the tremendous contributions of
individuals who, through their dedication and tireless
efforts, helped to pave the way for the future generations
of kids to enjoy the great sport of ice hockey.
The mission statement of the Illinois Hockey Hall of
Fame is as follows:
“To honor the excellence of those individuals who,
through their exceptional endeavors both on and off the
ice, have contributed in an extraordinary way to enhance
the sport and image of hockey in Illinois.”
The Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2010 recently
inducted the 6th class of inductees into its Hall of Fame.
The honored inductees this year who were enshrined
into the Hall were:

Chicago on a date to be determined.
Chelios and Suter combined for 43 seasons along NHL blue
lines. Chelios played a record-tying 26 seasons -- six with the
Montreal Canadiens, nine with the Chicago Blackhawks and
10 with the Detroit Red Wings before closing his career with
the Atlanta Thrashers in 2009-10 at the age of 48. He retired
as the oldest U.S.-born hockey player ever and the second
oldest in NHL history behind former Detroit legend Gordie
Howe (52). Chelios currently works as the executive advisor
to Detroit GM Ken Holland.
Gary Suter (Photo by Getty Images.)
"I wanted to leave the game when I felt like there was
nothing left in the tank," Chelios told reporters at his
retirement announcement Aug. 31, 2010. "I think I pretty
much accomplished that. I have no regrets."
A three-time Stanley Cup champion and three-time Norris
Trophy winner, Chelios scored 185 goals and 948 points and
accrued 2,891 penalty minutes in 1,651 regular-season
games. His 266 games played in the Stanley Cup Playoffs are
the most in NHL history. The Chicago native also is one of
only two players to skate in four Olympics (1984, 1998,
2002, 2006) and represented the U.S. in three Canada Cups
(1984, 1987, 1991), the World Cup of Hockey (1996, 2004)
and the World Junior Championship (1982).
Chelios credited the 1980 U.S. Olympic team's gold medal
win in Lake Placid for influencing his hockey career.
"Once I saw they pulled that off, I wanted to be in their
skates," Chelios said during a conference call introducing
this year's Hall class. "It means a lot to us and that's what
motivated me. It was a great incentive; those were great
guys."
Tkachuk also directly credited the "Miracle on Ice" team for
his career.
"I want to say thank you to the 1980 Olympic team, because
without you I probably wouldn't have played hockey," he
said.
Tkachuk played 19 seasons in the League with four teams,
"I had been in Calgary for nine
years and I'm from Wisconsin,
so it was like getting traded
back home, just two hours
away, where all my friends and
family could come see me
play," Suter said. "I was really
excited about that, plus I was
teamed up with Chris Chelios
and before that I had just
played with him on U.S.
teams."
Keith Tkachuk
Ed Snider
totaling 1,200 regular-season games and 538 goals. He's one
of only four U.S.-born players to notch 500-plus goals,
joining Mike Modano, Jeremy Roenick and Joe Mullen. The
five-time All-Star also had 525 assists, 1,063 points and
2,219 penalty minutes. During the 1996-97 season with the
Phoenix Coyotes, he became the first U.S.-born player to
lead the NHL in goals (52) and was the fourth player in NHL
history to record at least 50 goals and 200 penalty minutes in
a single season.
Television analyst Eddie Olczyk, who played with Tkachuk
for three seasons in Winnipeg, said he'll never forget the
determination with which his former teammate played the
game.
"He came in raw (in 1991-92) and just evolved into a great
player," Olczyk said. "He was the prototypical power
forward. He could score. He could hit. He wasn't afraid to run
you into the ditch. He was a great pro. He's one of the greatest
American-born players to play the game."
Tkachuk, who played collegiately at Boston University,
twice represented the U.S. at the World Junior Championship
in 1991 and '92, collecting 9 goals and 16 points in 14 games.
The Melrose, Mass., native joins Chelios as the only players
to skate in four Olympics for the U.S. (1992, 1998, 2002,
2006), and he also played in two World Championships
(1996, 2004).
Suter burst upon the NHL scene in 1985-86 after two seasons
at the University of Wisconsin. The native of Madison, Wis.,
earned the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie after
producing 18 goals and 68 points in 80 games with the
Flames during the 1985-86 season. The four-time All-Star
also helped lead the Flames to a Stanley Cup in 1989.
Throughout his 17-year NHL career, Suter played in 1,145
games and finished with 845 points. He also teamed with
Chelios and Tkachuk in Team USA's silver medal-winning
effort at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. He spent
four-plus seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks and four
seasons with the San Jose Sharks.
He said his time with the Blackhawks was one of the
highlights of his career because he got to play with Chelios
for the first time. Suter said when he went on his first

Championship. Suter's brother, Bob, was a member of the
1980 "Miracle on Ice" team that won gold at the 1980
Olympics, and his nephew, Ryan, is a star defenseman for the
Nashville Predators.
Snider, elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988, enters
the U.S. Hall of Fame in the builder's category. He was the
driving force behind NHL hockey coming to Philadelphia in
1967 and the construction of the Spectrum and the Flyers'
current home, the Wells Fargo Center.
Emrick, a native of LaFontaine, Ind., was inducted into the
Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008. He spent more than two
decades with MSG and the New Jersey Devils before
announcing he'd work exclusively for NBC Sports and
Versus on July 21.
Nicknamed "Doc," which he acquired after receiving a
doctorate in radio/television/film from Bowling Green State
University in 1976, Emrick received the Lester Patrick
Award in 2004, and in 2008 earned the Foster Hewitt
Memorial Award for his contributions to hockey
broadcasting. He's called 13 Stanley Cup Finals as the lead
national announcer on NBC, Versus, Fox and ESPN, and 23
Game 7s in Stanley Cup Playoff action. He won a national
Emmy Award for Outstanding Sports Personality - Play by
Play in 2011, and has won many regional awards, including
seven local Emmy awards.
"I love watching the sport of hockey on TV," Tkachuk said,
"and he makes it better with his knowledge and insight."
Emrick -- who celebrated his 65th birthday Monday -- is the
first media member inducted into the Hall, but he has the
same status as the other four members of the Class of 2011.
"Mike Emrick is the first media member inducted into the
Hall of Fame," USA Hockey Executive Director Dave
Ogrean said, "but we don't have separated categories. He's a
full-fledged member of the institution."

Skill Development and
Goaltending take Center Ice
at the Admirals Hockey
Club
By: Jon Grant
This offseason, the Admirals
Hockey Club hired Stu Gould as its new Hockey
Director. Stu is a well known figure in the hockey world
as the founder of the Good as Gould goalie schools. Stu
has dedicated 27 years to Illinois youth hockey and the
development of its players. In addition to his Goalie
School, Stu has held coaching positions with the
Chicago Steel and Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL ,
New Trier High School, and several youth hockey clubs.
In addition to his Hockey Director and coaching duties
at the Admirals, Stu is currently the Assistant Coach and
Goalie Coach for the Loyola Academy Varsity Boys
Hockey Team.
In its five seasons of existence the Admirals Hockey
Club has always placed its focus on the development of
individual skills and a love for the game of hockey.
Stu’s leadership will allow that focus to expand further
to excellence in goaltending and the building of teams
from the net out.
The Admirals will be bringing a core competency
approach to the skill development program whereby
each player will be individually tracked through the skill
acquisition process as they move from pre-hockey
through Midget.
At the Admirals, players can expect to not just exhibit
their strengths but also address and improve their
weaknesses, ensuring that they are always ready for the
next appropriate step in their development. “Stu brings
a level of enthusiasm and experience that matches the
love of the game seen in our membership. I am excited
to see what the addition of Stu will bring to the
development of our players,” Jeff Schoner, President of
the Admirals Hockey Club.
The Admirals field teams in both the NWHL and NIHL.
The total team count at the Admirals has grown from 2
in year one to 18 in 2010. In addition to these teams,
the Admirals also have a Mighty Mite house program
for players under 8 who are new to the game. This house
program had 8 in-house teams in 2010. The Mighty Mite
program is fed by the Admirals Pre-Hockey Skills
Program which is available to all new hockey players 8
and under and provides free “try it” sessions on a regular
basis for parents who want to stick a toe in the pool prior
to making a commitment.
As hockey grows within Illinois it is critical that entry
points to the game are provided outside of the usual PreHockey to Mighty Mite to Mite and beyond progression.
Our game is seeing an increase in the addition of new
players above the Mite level. For several seasons the
Admirals Hockey Club has offered a No-Check House
League for 9 and over players new to the game and has
been successful in moving these new players on to
NWHL and NIHL teams at every level after a period of
time.
With Stu at the helm, the Admirals will continue to
provide a fun introduction to the game for all players,
regardless of their age and skill level.
Admirals Hockey Club:
Thank You for a Great
Hockeypalooza!
“I am thrilled to be at the Admirals and believe that the
entire Club can take our programs to all new heights in
the coming years.
We will build our success on the skill development of
our own players and provide them unrivaled access to
the best programs and coaches we can.
The Admirals will be home for any hockey player that
wants to get better in an environment that emphasizes
the fun of the game in a great family atmosphere.
And I will do everything I can to make this the best
destination in the state for goaltenders at every level
who want to anchor our teams and take their game to the
next level.” Stu Gould, new Hockey Director at the
Admirals Hockey Club.
For information about the Admirals Hockey Club
program, including tryout and evaluation dates please
go to www.AdmiralsHockeyClub.com or call Stu Gould
at (630) 790-0292.
The Admirals Hockey Club is based at Center Ice of
DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
Thank you to all the players,
families and coaches for a fun Hockeypalooza on
Sunday! Special thanks to Connie's Pizza, Mickey's Hot
Dogs, Frito-Lay, RentalMax, and the Chicago Steel for
their generous support!
Congratulations to the winners of the raffles, who will
each receive a set of 2011-2012 Admirals jerseys and a
pair of socks: Mite - Michael Drayton; Squirt - Nick
Cipriano; Pee Wee - Charlie Chmelik; Bantam Adonay Hammond.

AROUND THE BOARDS
Thank You from Coach Schuman
Dear Jaguar Organization and
Contributors,
Melanie and I would like to send a
special thank you to all whom participated in filling
Riley's Hockey Bag with baby goodies and or sending
best regards to our new family! Words cannot describe
the over-whelming feeling both of us got when we saw
the jaguar hockey bag and everything that was inside of
it. We are truly grateful to have such support around us
as we begin our parenthood adventure!
We would also like to thank the Spring Bantam 2 team
for the (locker room baby shower) That was really
awesome as some of the parents could probably tell by
my reaction at first sight of the locker room! Thank you
so much guys!
As for anyone who did not get details about Riley. He
was born May 17th at 1:46am. He arrived three weeks
early according to his estimated due date and weighed in
at 6lb 10oz measuring 19" long! His first week was a bit
of a scare as he developed a concerning case of
jaundice! He spent 3 days in the hospital just two days
after we brought him home. His photo therapy cleared
him right up and was then released to come back home!
Now he spends his time eating and sleeping while
mommy and daddy are deprived of both. Although he is
challenging, We wouldn't trade him for the world!
Once again we would like to thank everyone involved in
making the process so much more delightful for Melanie
and I. Hopefully come fall season Riley will be at the
rink for everyone to come say hi.
Best Regards!
Ryan Schuman
earlier in the
season,
the
Jaguars looked
to the SWSL
playoffs as one
m o r e
opportunity to tell the hockey world that they mean
business. Because of a first place finish in the regular
season, the Jaguars earned a bye in the first round.
Meeting the Admirals in the second round, the Jaguars
never trailed and went on to a 5-2 victory with 5 goals
scored by 5 different players. In fact 9 of the 11 skaters
found themselves with at least one point in the post
season,
in
just
two
playoff
games.
That is a fantastic team effort.
For the Championship game, the Jaguars squared off
against the Bruins #1 team and even trailed 3-2 in the
second period.
Showing great resilience and
determination the Jaguars stormed back to set the game
at 5-3 with one period remaining. In a third period that
looked more like a wild, wild -west shootout, both teams
scored
early
and
often.
With the game score at 8-7 and 46 seconds remaining,
the Jaguars fought off a man advantage and put the puck
in the empty net with 22 seconds left to seal the victory
and the SWSL Mite Title!!!
After being crowned champs, the Jaguars went back into
the locker room to celebrate with cupcakes and
Gatorade for a few precious moments, before getting
dressed and getting ready…to get back to business.
Congratulations Jaguars!!!

not, the hockey season is right around the corner. Get
that hockey equipment dusted off. Sharpen the skates.
Get ready for the Knights “Fall Focus Camp”.
I would like to welcome back all of our loyal St. Jude
families – without you all we would not have such a nice
family atmosphere at our rink. I would also like to
welcome those new families and want to make sure we
all make them feel at home. I want to send out a special
thanks to our former hockey director, Joe Frankenbach
and current president, Dave Gulley.

and Russ Guzior (Mt. Carmel Head Coach) will be
preparing the on-ice plan for the Fall Focus Program.
The St. Jude Knights travel coaching staff along with
special guests will also be assisting with this camp.
We are very fortunate as a hockey club to have such
talented coaches assist us at St. Jude. Our kids look up
to these coaches and many of our hockey players aspire
to one day play for one of these exceptional high
schools.
Last year we were fortunate to have initiated two new
programs at St. Jude, the Little Knights ADM and the
Mt.
Greenwood
Minor
Hawks
Program.
The Minor Hawks Program, which is our Learn to Skate
Program, was awarded the “Minor Hawk Program of the
Year”.
The award was given to us by the Chicago Blackhawks
and AHAI.
A special thanks to Joe Keneipp, Tom Whalen, Chris
VanEck, Jamie Pembroke and the rest of the St. Jude
coaching staff, without their talents, this award would
not have been possible.
These programs have helped St. Jude flourish as an
organization and brought the game of hockey to many
children who otherwise would not have had the
opportunity.
The Little Knights ADM and Mt. Greenwood Learn to
Skate programs helped grow our hockey membership by
100 new skaters.
As a result of our growth, we are anticipating 10 travel
and 7 house teams for 2011/12 season.
These are exciting times to be part of St. Jude Hockey
and I am eager to begin the upcoming season. I also
want to thank all of our coaches and the entire St. Jude
Community that have helped build the St. Jude Hockey
Club.
Without the hard work of many individuals who
volunteer their time and energy, the success we have
experienced would not have been possible.
As always, if you have any questions or comments,
please feel free to let me know.

It’s Hot Now But…
Remember January and March? When you didn’t have to head to the rink to play hockey? You could just strap on your skates and head out to the
backyard or local pond. Here are a collection of some of Wilmette Hockey’s backyard rinks to remind us of the cool down…
It will come eventually!

Blackhawks Agree to Multi-Year Contract Extension with
Patrick Sharp
The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to terms with forward
and alternate captain Patrick Sharp on a five-year contract
extension.
"Patrick is a very important member of our organization and
we are looking forward to him being part of a core group that
will be a contender for many years to come," Blackhawks Vice
President/General Manager Stan Bowman said. “Over the last
several years we have seen him develop into one of the game’s
elite players as well as a fixture in the community and we are
proud to be able to announce this news today."
Sharp, 29, paced the Blackhawks and shared eighth in the
National Hockey League with 34 goals, and ranked third on
the club with a career-high 71 points (34G, 37A) in 74 regularseason contests during the 2010-11 campaign. He also finished
second on the team with three goals and added two assists in
seven games during the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and was
honored as the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 NHL All-Star
Game.
Since being acquired by Chicago in a trade with the
Philadelphia Flyers on Dec. 5, 2005, Sharp has registered 301
points (150G, 151A) in 427 regular-season tilts over parts of
six seasons with the Blackhawks.
The Thunder Bay, Ontario, native ranks 23rd in franchise
history with 150 goals, 13th with 39 power-play markers,
shares seventh with 13 shorthanded tallies and is tied for 12th
with 24 game-winning goals.
Sharp shared third in the NHL with 11 goals, ranked fifth with
22 points (11G, 11A) and tied for second among league
forwards with a +10 plus/minus rating in 22 postseason games
during the Blackhawks run to the 2010 Stanley Cup
championship. During three appearances in the Stanley Cup
Playoffs with Chicago, Sharp has notched 21 goals, including
nine power-play markers, and 17 assists in 46 postseason tilts.
Originally selected by Philadelphia in the third round (95th
overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft out of the University of
Vermont, Sharp has recorded 316 points (160G, 156A), 339
penalty minutes and a +39 rating in 493 career regular-season
tilts over parts of eight seasons with the Flyers (2002-05) and
Blackhawks (2005-11). He has also added 22 goals, 17 assists
and 26 penalty minutes in 58 career postseason contests with
the two clubs.
Internationally, the Winnipeg-born forward posted three goals
in nine games at the 2008 IIHF World Championships with
Team Canada, and participated in the 2009 Canadian Men’s
Olympic Team orientation camp.
Lavin Eager to Begin His Professional Career
Courtesy of ChicagoBlackhawks.com
By Nate Haeni, Rockford IceHogs
Last offseason, it was then-prospect Ben Smith who closed out
his college career at Boston College on a high note, with a
national championship, before making his professional debut
in Rockford, eventually getting some experience in the
National Hockey League with the Blackhawks.
“The guys in Rockford were really good to me, especially the
older guys,” said Lavin. “I played with Garnet Exelby, and he
was a big help.”
Lavin continued to prepare for his first professional season by
participating in Blackhawks Prospect Camp at Johnny’s West
in Chicago. The 21-year-old recognizes that the pro game is a
lot faster and the guys are a lot bigger than in college, but he
knows it's just something to which he’s going to have to adjust.
“The professional game, when you make a mistake it’s pretty
highlighted,” said Lavin. “Every guy is held responsible for
their assignments on the ice, where in college if you make a
mistake you have the speed or ability to recover from it. It’s
just a matter of limiting your mistakes.”
For Lavin, taking a similar road as Smith did isn’t a bad idea.
The Verdict: Inside the Hat Trick’s Blackhawks Heritage
Courtesy of ChicagoBlackhawks.com
By Bob Verdi, Blackhawks Team Historian
Although his collegiate career didn’t finish with a national
championship, defenseman Joe Lavin did help guide the
University of Notre Dame to a Frozen Four appearance in
Saint Paul, Minn., during the 2010-11 NCAA season.
Chicago’s fifth-round selection (126th overall) in the 2007
draft signed a two-year entry-level contract with the
Blackhawks in April and is set for his first full pro season in
2011-12, hoping to parlay his collegiate success at the next
level.
“For a transfer like me, you want to make sure you are taking
full advantage of your college opportunity,” said Lavin. “We
had a great group of guys. We took things one day at a time,
and before you knew it we were in the Frozen Four, so it was
a lot of fun.”
Prior to transferring to Notre Dame, Lavin spent two seasons
with Providence College from 2007-2009, tallying nine assists
in 48 contests. After the first semester of the 2008-09 season,
the Shrewsbury, Mass., native joined the Omaha Lancers in the
USHL where he recorded 23 points (7G, 16A) in 33 games.
Lavin began the 2009-10 season back with the Lancers before
he decided to transfer to Notre Dame and finish out the season
in South Bend, playing in 18 games while notching three goals
and seven assists. In his first full season with the Irish during
the 2010-11 season, Lavin served as team captain and guided
a young defensive crew while registering 17 points (6G, 11A)
in 44 games.
The Fighting Irish were knocked out of the tournament 4-3 by
the eventual national champions, University of MinnesotaDuluth, but Lavin continued on in the 2011 playoffs, trading
his Irish sweater for an IceHogs one and helping Rockford
finish off their season. The day after getting bounced out of the
tournament, Lavin got the call and signed an amateur tryout
agreement to play in Rockford.
“I was obviously still in shape; I hadn’t taken anytime off or
anything,” said Lavin. “Mentally I didn’t check out because I
knew there was a chance it would happen.”
The blueliner got a little taste of the pro game and made his
professional debut on April 9 against Grand Rapids. Lavin also
played in the IceHogs season finale on April 10, registering his
first professional assist in a 5-4 overtime win at Chicago.
Winger Alex Kaleta inadvertently coined the term 'hat trick' in
1946. (Photo by: Imperial Oil-Turofsky/Hockey Hall of Fame).
Sammy Taft is speaking, and the voice is clear. The picture, on
a disk via a film feature that is 20 years old, is a bit shaky, but
not his story.
“Alex Kaleta of the Chicago Blackhawks,” says Taft, a
Toronto haberdasher, who was 78 at the time. “A lot of players
with the Maple Leafs used to come into my store to purchase
hats, as well as players from visiting teams. And that’s how the
term ‘hat trick’ started. With Alex Kaleta.”
Team historian Bob Verdi has covered sports for five decades,
including more than 40 years as a columnist and contributor
for the Chicago Tribune. Verdi authored "Chicago
Blackhawks: Seventy-Five Years" in 2001.
Kaleta, a fleet winger, joined the Blackhawks for the 1941-42
season, then missed three full years during World War II.
When he rejoined the NHL, Kaleta wandered into Taft’s
establishment and took a liking to a fancy fedora. There was
only one problem: He didn’t have sufficient funds to purchase
it.
Taft, an entrepreneur with obvious promotional skills, made a
proposal. If Kaleta happened to score three goals against the
Maple Leafs that evening — Jan. 26, 1946 — he should return
to the store and the hat would be his for free. Kaleta not only
scored three goals. He scored four in a 6-5 loss to the Maple
Leafs.
As Taft fondly recalls, the Toronto press ran with the story. On
the radio that night, when he listened for hockey results, the
big news was “Blackhawk Alex Kaleta’s hat trick.” The next
day’s newspapers were all over it too. Although there are other

versions about how one of the most famous terms in hockey —
and the lexicon of all sports — evolved, the tale of Taft and
Kaleta is officially recognized by the Hockey Hall of Fame.
If only Alex Kaleta, who died in 1987, had taken ownership of
it. Instead, well, he basically kept it under his hat.
“Alex was very humble,” said sister Millie, who lives in
Calgary. “When he was home, he never talked about what he
did in hockey.”
Indeed, the hat trick story did not sink in on remaining family
members until after Kaleta passed away.
“A few years after that, they had a show about it between
periods on Hockey Night in Canada,” recalled brother Arthur,
also a Calgary resident. “That’s the one you are referring to,
with Sammy Taft talking about it in his store. Until then, we
never realized how it came about. I was the youngest of seven
children, seven years younger than Alex. He left the
Blackhawks for three years during World War II to enter the
armed service here in Canada. By that time, I was growing into
his clothes. After he went back to Chicago, and had his big
night in Toronto, one of the items I eventually grew into was
this fancy gray top hat with a nice gray band around it.
“Alex, I remember, had worn it with the brim on the side. I
took it over and wore it with the brim over my eyes, so I would
look like a gangster. We didn’t come from money. When Alex
first joined the Blackhawks in 1941, he had this cardboard
suitcase. Eventually, he bought some fine luggage and nice
clothes. He was very well-dressed, and when I began wearing
his clothes, so was I well-dressed. He never said much about
the hat. And when I moved from Canmore, which is about an
hour from Calgary, somehow the hat disappeared.
“That was 1955, the last I wore it. Almost 40 years later, we’re
watching this hockey game, and here’s the story about my
brother and the hat trick. I was shocked. If I had kept that hat,
I’d be a millionaire. Actually, if I had kept that hat, it would be
in the Hockey Hall of Fame, where it belongs. But that was
typical Alex. He was a terrific player but never put himself
above anybody else and never said a word about the hat trick.
We found out about it through Hockey Night in Canada.”
There is another link between the Blackhawks and Kaleta.
Follow closely. Bruce MacArthur, cousin of current team
chairman Rocky, is married to Susan, whose sister Allison
married Rick, youngest son of Frank Manzardo, who played
with Kaleta in Canmore and currently lives in Springfield, Mo.
“I was decent,” says Frank Manzardo, “but not nearly as good
as Alex. He was so fast; his nickname was ‘Seabiscuit,’ after
the horse.”
In October of 1948, after four seasons in Chicago, Kaleta was
traded by the Blackhawks to the Rangers along with goalie
Emile “Cat” Francis, who went on to become a Hall of Fame
executive/coach in New York. Kaleta, also adept as a
defenseman, was on the 1950 Rangers’ team that lost to the
Detroit Red Wings in a seven-game Stanley Cup Final.
Although not soft, Kaleta was so gentlemanly and goodnatured that he was also referred to as “Killer” by fans in New
York, where he was extremely popular.
Kaleta played a total of 387 games in the NHL, after which he
spent four years in the Western League. In 2008, he was
inducted into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame, where his
younger brother spoke.
“I didn’t hold up too well,” recalled Arthur, who also is
addressed by some friends as “Art” or “Archie.” “But I got
through it. Alex was a fine man. He talked about Chicago and
the Blackhawks, how he enjoyed playing there with his
teammates. But, as I said, he just wasn’t one to talk about
himself. We all learned how to skate as kids on the rink in our
backyard in Canmore, where we grew up. But only Alex made
it to the big time. He had 24 goals in Chicago one season
(1946-47) after he came back from the armed service, a lot in
those days. He stayed in hockey after he retired and did some
coaching, always smiling, never telling us about how he was
behind a term we all know now, the hat trick.”
The 26-year-old blueliner split time between Phoenix and
Columbus last season, registering 16 points (4G, 12A) in 70
games. chicagoblackhawks.com recently caught up with
Lepisto, who is spending the offseason in his native Finland.
Blackhawks Name Ted Dent Head Coach of AHL’s
Rockford IceHogs
Courtesy of ChicagoBlackhawks.com
What made you choose Chicago?
I’ve always really liked the city, first of all; it’s always been
one of my favorite road cities and the team is great. It’s a great
organization and all I hear is great things from other players.
The building is always sold out, and the fans are really
passionate. I love hearing that national anthem before the
game; I always get shivers. It was an easy choice.
When Alex Kaleta was buried on July 9, 1987, a Chicago
Blackhawks’ jersey was tucked under his arm.
The Chicago Blackhawks have named
Ted Dent as Head Coach of the
organization’s top minor league
affiliate, the American Hockey
League’s Rockford IceHogs.
"We are proud to promote Ted to the
head coaching position in Rockford, an
extremely important role in our hockey
operations department," Blackhawks
Vice President/General Manager Stan Bowman said. "During
his time with our organization, Ted has proven himself as a
great leader and has developed a solid track record in helping
players rise to the National Hockey League level. Our hockey
operations department is full of talented individuals and we
take pride when we are able to promote someone from within,
like Ted."
“I am very honored and fortunate for the opportunity to coach
the Rockford IceHogs,” said Dent. “I would like to thank Mr.
John McDonough, Mr. Stan Bowman and the rest of the
Chicago Blackhawks management team for believing in me. I
am excited to continue the development and growth of the
young prospects we have in Rockford and at the same time
create a positive winning environment.”
A native of Toronto, Dent is entering his sixth season in the
Blackhawks organization and his fifth with Rockford. He
spent the previous five seasons as an assistant coach under Bill
Peters and Mike Haviland with the IceHogs (2007-11) and
Chicago’s previous AHL affiliate, the Norfolk Admirals
(2006-07). His teams have compiled a regular season record of
216-145-17-22 and qualified for the Calder Cup playoffs in
four of the five campaigns. Dent has been instrumental in the
development of 31 players that have been promoted to the
Blackhawks from Rockford over the last four years.
Following a collegiate career at St. Lawrence University (NY),
Dent played professional hockey for parts of four seasons with
the CHL’s Wichita Thunder and ECHL’s Johnstown Chiefs,
Charlotte Checkers and Toledo Storm. At the conclusion of his
playing career Dent served as the video coordinator for the
Washington Capitals from 1999-2004, working with current
NHL head coaches Randy Carlyle and Ron Wilson. He began
his career behind the bench as an assistant coach with the
ECHL’s Kelly Cup Champion Trenton Titans (2004-05) and
served as the head coach of the ECHL’s Columbia Inferno
(2005-06) before joining the Blackhawks organization.
Lepisto Thrilled to Join the Blackhawks
Courtesy of ChicagoBlackhawks.com
The Blackhawks put what was potentially the finishing touch
on their 2011-12 defensive corps when they agreed to terms
with defenseman Sami Lepisto on a one-year deal last Friday.
For our fans who haven’t watched you before, how would
you describe your game?
I would say that my game is trying to make plays; I try to get
the easy pass to the forwards and use my skating – which I
think is pretty good – to my benefit. I like to join the rush once
in a while, but I also know to let the forwards do their thing.
That’s my game.
Can you talk about the discussions behind the scenes?
When did you first find out the Blackhawks were
interested in your services?
There were a couple other teams involved, but then when I
heard Chicago might be interested I got pretty excited. I just
wanted to see where that would go. That was pretty much it;
when I heard Chicago, I told my agent that was the place. I was
happy.
Which new teammate are you most looking forward to
playing with?
The Blackhawks have really great defensemen in Duncan
Keith and Brent Seabrook, but there are also great forwards
like Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa. It’s
tough playing against all of them, so it’s nice to play on the
same team for a while.
Have you discussed what number you’re going to wear
here?
Not yet, no. I’m not sure – I haven’t even looked into it yet.
We’ll see what we can come up with.
Did you have a favorite player growing up?
I liked watching Kimmo Timonen and Teppo Numminen on
the Finnish team. I didn’t watch the NHL that closely when I
was growing up. But they were the guys I looked up to, and
still do.
You just won Gold at the 2011 IIHF World Championships
with the Finnish team. Is there anything you’re hoping to take
away from that experience that may help your game over here?
I don’t know, really. That was the first time for a while that I
played on an Olympic-sized rink, so it was a little different
than playing in North America. The last time I went to the
World Championships they were in Quebec and the Olympics
were in Vancouver, so it was different. The style of play is so
different. Of course, it was unbelievable to win, but I don’t
know that it really helped my game on a smaller rink. You
learn how to win, but at the same time it’s a bit of a different
game.
I hear you’re getting your day with the World
Championship trophy tomorrow… what are your plans for
it?
Actually, I have it right now. I was supposed to get it
tomorrow, but something changed and it came early. I’m going
to have a little party with my friends tomorrow. Right now, I’m
driving to my parents’ place to show it to my little brothers.
I’m looking at it right now in my rear-view mirror; it’s pretty
exciting. It’s nice to have the extra day, too.

Sean Frazier
Frazier Name
Chair of
Division I
Men’s Ice
Hockey
Committee
Wisconsin Deputy Athletics
Director Sean Frazier has been
named chair of the Division I
Men's Ice Hockey Committee for
the 2011-12 season.
Frazier's one-year term will begin on September 1. He
will succeed the current chair, Providence College
athletics director Robert Driscoll.
"It is an honor to be named chair of such a prestigious
committee," Frazier said. "We are currently in a time of
great opportunity in college hockey, and I look forward
to leading the sport though this period of evolution."
The current president of the Minority Opportunities
Athletic Association, Frazier will become the first
African-American chair in the history of the men's ice
hockey committee. He started his career at Wisconsin in
2007 as associate athletic director for events and
facilities before being promoted to senior associate
athletic director of operations in 2009. He was named to
his current title of deputy athletics director in April
2011. Prior to his employment at Wisconsin, he held the
position of athletics director at Merrimack College,
Clarkson University and Manhattanville College, as
well as assistant director of athletics at the University of
Maine.
A native of Long Island, N.Y., he was a football studentathlete at the University of Alabama, where he earned
his bachelor's degree in communications. Frazier earned
his master's degree in higher education leadership from
the University of Maine and is currently working on his
doctorate in educational leadership and policy analysis
at Wisconsin.

Craig Smith
With two years of collegiate eligibility remaining for the
Wisconsin Badgers, forward Craig Smith will become a
professional hockey player. The Madison, Wis., native is
a 2009 fourth-round pick (98th overall) of the NHL’s
Nashville Predators, the team of former Badgers Ryan
Suter and Blake Geoffrion.
“We’re excited for Craig,” said Head Coach Mike
Eaves. “The window of opportunity to make a move like
this is sometimes small. The landscape has changed with
Nashville in that the team has changed somewhat with
free agency. Smitty had every thought after a successful
senior men’s World Championship to come back and
play here at Wisconsin, but he feels like there is an
opportunity now and he feels in his heart it is the right
time to go.”
Smith, who was slated to be one of Wisconsin’s cocaptains for the upcoming season, finished last year as
the Badgers’ team leader with 19 goals. He ranked
second on the team with 43 points in 41 games, while
leading the squad with five game-winning tallies and
153 shots. He also took 31 penalties for 87 minutes. For
his career, Smith finishes with 27 goals, 76 points and
159 penalty minutes in 82 games.
Smith skated for Team USA in the 2011 International
Ice Hockey Federation World Championship where he
posted three goals and six points in seven games,
ranking second behind former Badger Derek Stepan for
the team lead in scoring. His team-leading plus-2 helped
the Americans reach the quarterfinals, where they fell to
the Czech Republic.
Smith joins defenseman Jake Gardiner, who signed with
the Toronto Maple Leafs, and forward Jordy Murray,
who left for Rapperswil-Jona Lakers of the Swiss
National League A (NLA), as early departures. Both
Gardiner and Murray gave up one year of eligibility.
Locker Room
Floors, Arena
Foundations
Going in for La
Bahn Arena
With each return
trip to La Bahn Arena, it is easy
to see the changes taking place at
the future site of the men's and women's hockey and
swimming facility.
Much of the floor of the hockey locker room area has
been poured, which gives workers the ability to prepare
for installation of a first-of-its-kind in the United States
"Bubble Deck System" that will support the concrete
roof of the locker room areas.
The foundation wall and roof deck are poured for the
connecting tunnel between the Kohl Center and La Bahn
Arena, which the men's hockey team will use when
coming out onto the ice on gameday and which allows
general access between the two facilities. This area is
ready for waterproofing and backfilling.
The elevator shaft and stairwell areas that will allow
access to the mail level from the lower level progresses,
with work on the second level underway, as well.
Foundation footings and walls along what will be the
south end of the facility continue going in, while
excavation of the Arena area itself continues to allow
such progress.
Relocation of the electrical infrastructure continues as
the new electrical switch gear room sees the reassembly
of a number of switch gears removed from other parts of
the construction site.
Installation of new windows on the SERF that will
become a new source of natural light into the pool area
for Badger swimmers continues, as well. Some at the
east end are already complete, while demolition of the
existing brick wall progresses and new windows are
added.

House Charities in Michiana
Notre Dame hockey coach Jeff Jackson has issued a
challenge to Fighting Irish hockey fans to vote for him
as "the best-dressed man in a kilt" to help raise funds for
the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Michiana for
the 2011-12 campaign.
As part of McDazzle 2011 "Men in Kilts," Jackson is
participating in the most important fundraising effort
that is held for the local Ronald McDonald Family
Room. The facility provides a free overnight stay at the
Ronald McDonald House Family Room for the parents
of critically ill children.
The head coach of the Notre Dame hockey team is one
of 17 participants that have joined forces in this unique
promotion in an effort to raise money and awareness for
the Ronald McDonald charities in the South Bend and
Mishawaka region.
All Irish fans, and not just hockey fans, can help by
casting a vote for Jackson as the best-dressed man in a
kilt. The cost of the vote is $50, with all proceeds going
to help fund overnight stays for families at one of the
three overnight facilities in the South Bend area.
Voting has begun and Jackson is counting on all Irish
fans to jump on board to help with this cause by casting
a vote for him online at www.meninkilts.org.
Every vote is tax deductible to the Ronald McDonald
House Charities of Michiana and all the dollars raised
locally stay in the Michiana community. Any parent
with a hospitalized child under the age of 21 is eligible
to use the Ronald McDonald Family Room.
Jackson and all of the other 16 "Men in Kilts" celebrities
will be part of the McDazzle 2011 festivities on
Thursday, September 22 at the Gillespie Conference
Center at the Hilton Garden Inn in South Bend, Ind. For
