Progressive Choices is a non-profit organization that helps provide vocational
training and supportive employment services for developmentally disabled
adults. They are a full service support and employment agency. Here at NyE
Communities Coalition we have had the pleasure of having a few delightful
individuals come and volunteer once a week.
There is never a challenge they haven’t been able to
tackle head on. They have worked with a few of the
staff at NyECC to help complete projects. While
working with John Pawlak on the storage area John
said, “They work very well, listen to instructions,
and they get along well. It would be a pleasure to
have them come back again.” They are enthusiastic
and work hard to get the job done quickly and
efficiently. After helping clean and organize the
Holiday Task Force’s Community Dinner storage
area with Linda Wright she said, “They did a
fantastic job. They were very helpful and great to
work with.” NyECC has found them to be truly
beneficial to our organization. Roman Gerard is
working diligently to promote the services

NyE Communities Coalition would like to give a heartfelt THANK YOU, to all
the AmeriCorps that served during the past year. We appreciate all your hard
work and wonderful service projects, such as, the inspirational garden and
your outstanding work in the schools. You have been a great asset to NyE
Communities Coalition, NyE County School District, and the community. We
wish you well and good luck in your future endeavors!
America’s drug culture seems to be shifting towards an attitude of acceptance and
normalization, especially in the states that have decided to legalize recreational marijuana use.
In the case of Colorado, there’s been a 26 percent increase in youth (ages 12 to 17) for monthly
marijuana use in the three years since medical marijuana was commercialized in 2009 (“The
Legalization of Marijuana in Colorado: The Impact,” a study by the Rocky Mountain High
Intensity Drug Trafficking Area).
It is disconcerting that legalization also leads young people to view marijuana’s effects less as
serious. According to a time.com article, many students think that marijuana use isn’t
dangerous since it’s already legal in some states. Yet the dangers of marijuana use during
adolescence and young adulthood are proven.
Youth marijuana use is associated with decreased school performance. Marijuana use can
drop a person’s IQ by 8 points. Also, marijuana use may have a higher future risk of using other
drugs, including alcohol, tobacco, methamphetamine and even cocaine. In a 2014
Monitoring the Future survey, only 16.4 percent of high school seniors thought that
occasional marijuana use put the user at great risk compared to 27.4 percent five years ago.
According to 2013 Nevada Kids Count data, nearly one in five of Nevada’s kids and young
people ages 12 to 25 already smoke marijuana one or more times a month. African-American and
Hispanic populations account for significantly higher percentages among Nevada’s youth.
As President Obama recently stated publicly, “Students who smoke marijuana have twice the
odds of being a high school dropout. And have trouble finding jobs, get involved in gangs and
crime, and end up on welfare.”
