2011 AnnuAl report - YMCA of Coastal Georgia
for youth development for healthy living for social responsibility YMCA of coastal georgia 2011 annual report Strengthening the Foundations of Our Community The mission of the YMCA of Coastal Georgia is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. YMCA programs focus on five core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility & Faith. The YMCA serves men, women, and children of all ages, regardless of their race, religion, or ability to pay for program or membership fees. 2011 was another year of great accomplishments... ...for the YMCA of Coastal Georgia. These accomplishments allowed us to deliver memorable experiences and impact lives all over our six county service area. Individuals and families from different backgrounds are making connections at our Ys, improving their health, growing as individuals and serving their communities. At each of our branches we are continuing to positively impact the community in the areas of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. In 2011, our Y: Enhanced our 21st Century program with the addition of new sites. This free after school program, which is separate from our Pryme Tyme program, is federally funded and takes care of 1,200 kids daily. The site locations are primarily Title 1 schools and public housing neighborhoods and helps disadvantaged families with after care that includes a hot meal, field trips, and help from outside resources with programs like tennis, music and the arts. Grew our family with the addition of a YMCA in Brunswick, Georgia. The former YWCA of Brunswick became the newly formed Golden Isles YMCA and is a wonderful addition to our service area. This new Y allows us to introduce YMCA programs and services to a brand new county! There is no other non-profit quite like the Y, and as you flip through the pages of this report you will see the depth of our program offerings. Working side by side with our neighbors, we have worked hard over the past year to create opportunities that best fit the needs of the community. We hope you enjoy reading about some of this success. Secured funding from The Goizueta Foundation to continue the great work we have been doing with our Hispanic and Latino neighbors. This new funding allows us to expand our offerings to these communities in both early childhood education and afterschool care. Worked together with community partners in the Coastal Empire to help reduce the risk of type II Diabetes through our Diabetes Prevention Program. We couldn’t do our work without the generous support of our donors, board of directors, volunteers and staff. Their time, talents and resources allow our YMCA branches a chance to make a real difference in the lives of our members and program participants and a real difference in the communities in which we live. Thank you so much for your ongoing support and commitment to our YMCAs. Sincerely, YMCA of coastal georgia 2011 Annual Report 1 2 4 6 8 Welcome Letter Youth Development Healthy Living Social Responsibility By the Numbers YMCA of Coastal Georgia | P.O. This gift will enhance the Y’s “Welcoming Hispanic Families to YMCA Early Childhood Education and Care” pilot project. With this generous grant, we can continue to lift up early childhood education as one of our key program areas to ensure that all of the kids we serve have the skills and tools they need for academic success. This summer, the Effingham YMCA was invited to send 12 children to a special camp hosted by Gulfstream. At “G-Fly” camp the kids were given the opportunity to learn all about aviation and the methods behind it. This group of future aviators learned how to design a wing, and even had the chance to test these designs in a wind tunnel! The Teen Achievers program continued to educate and expose teens to various career and business opportunities. In the last year the program expanded from 2 -5 sites. A group of teens from the program even had the opportunity to travel to the state capitol for the 2011 Youth Assembly in November. Pryme Tyme, our off-site before and after school care, experienced a substantial amount of growth this past year. With the addition of 2 more counties to the areas served, Pryme Tyme is now operating in 53 elementary and middle schools throughout Coastal Georgia. The Liberty County/Armed Services YMCA Fall Festival was a huge success, having over 1,500 people come out for the occasion. The event would not have been possible if it weren’t for the members of Teen Challenge who volunteered their time to assist the staff with the set-up of 55 vendor sites, along with 30 games and activities. Throughout the entire event all of the teens were exceptional, respectful and a joy to have involved in such an important community event. Kids poured into the Southside YMCA this year to become involved in various youth sports. Offering new sports such as micro flag football and micro cheerleading in addition to traditional favorites proved to be a well received addition. The program at Southside experienced the highest participation levels in years! 2 3 2011 healthy living Healthy lifestyles weren’t hard to find among the growing number of health and wellness members at the McIntosh County YMCA in 2011. In addition to the health seeker the McIntosh County Y has been involved in partnering with the local Women’s Health and Primary Care office to offer community lecture and workshops. Through this partnership many families have discovered their health related needs of the Y. These families are now working weekly to improve their health and ultimately their lives, and the Y is helping them get there. This past September our association celebrated its 22nd year hosting the Heart of Savannah 5K. There was a great turnout at Forsyth Park that morning as hundreds gathered to participate in the 5K, 1 mile walk, and ¼ mile Kiddie Run. The Kiddie Run was a great start to the race, serving as the official kick off for Y Kids Run. As always this event served an opportunity for the community to come together for a day of fun, while at the same time giving families the chance to participate in healthy activities together. The Active Older Adults group at the Islands Y continues to be one of the most robust programs in the area. This endeavor provides time for seniors to come together and meet for luncheons, group fitness activities, fellowship, and to connect with one another. Over 40 individuals gather on a weekly basis at the Islands Y to enjoy all this program has to offer. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program took off this year offering classes in both Savannah and Pooler. Participants have really enjoyed the program and upon completion have left feeling healthier both inside and out. The program continues to expand, with a class starting in Rincon and a pilot class with Chatham County, one of our Corporate partners. Y Kids Run, our free youth running/walking program, had a very successful first year! This program is purposed to instill a healthier lifestyle in children by encouraging them to become more physically active on a regular basis. In its first year the program had over 600 children make the commitment to get active and join in the fun. 5 6 2011 social responsibility Through tremendous effort and community collaboration the Rising TYde Community Food Pantry was established and opened on Tybee Island in the summer of 2011. There was great need of a pantry in the area and through a group effort put forth by the Tybee YMCA, City of Tybee, local churches, Y members and local residents this was able to become a reality. Our West Chatham YMCA hosted the first annual free eye screening for all children enrolled in their Summer Day Camp. At the screening, hosted by the Lions Club, 74 of the 200 campers that were tested did not pass. These kids were given the chance to receive a free eye exam and glasses from Anderson Eye Care. At the end of this incredible service 10 children were provided with new glasses through funds provided by the Lions Club. These screenings will be implemented at all branches for summer campers on an annual basis. This year the entire YMCA of Coastal of Georgia association participated in Angel Tree, a program intended to provide a more cheerful Christmas to deserving individuals. Whether it was a gift given to a child, or an entire Christmas complete with the holiday feast donated to a family, the Angel Tree at our YMCAs has proven to be a symbol of giving during the holiday season. Together we provided Christmas cheer to over 950 individuals. The Habersham Y worked to provide a positive environment for students at St. Paul’s Academy for Boys. In the area where these boys live, there aren’t facilities like the Y for them to use. The Y opened the doors to these boys and helped make a Y experience possible for each them. Two or three times a week the boys come to the Y and enjoy access to the fitness room and activities like organized basketball and soccer. With help from Y staff members, they were able to learn the proper technique for weightlifting and equipment use too. The Richmond Hill YMCA and Hunter Army Airfield Department of Defense (DOD) Respite Care Collaboration work together to provide services to spouses of deployed soldiers. Through grant funding provided by the Armed Services YMCA, moms are able to take time for their women’s bible study and prayer group while their children socialize and play in the trusted care of our trained staff. This incredible program allows these women time for a much needed break to revive, and refresh themselves. 7 8 2011 by the numbers 2011 financials subsidized services 75,227 $2,273,609 19,971 Number of children, individuals and families who directly benefited from financial assistance Through the generous contributions of our donors, the YMCA of Coastal Georgia is able to provide financial assistance that enables all members of the community to enjoy YMCA programs, regardless of income. 9 expenses EARNED REVENUE Personnel 9,128,787 Membership 6,144,175 Professional Fees Program 6,038,817 Supplies & Equipment 1,703,334 Intra Y Revenue Allocations 2,151,689 Occupancy 1,520,632 Other Number of people served by the YMCA of Coastal Georgia Financial assistance offered to children, individuals and families who might otherwise not have been able to participate in YMCA programs or memberships income 514,580 PUBLIC SUPPORT Printing & Promotion 104,190 Transportation 159,873 National Support 130,849 Contributions 466,489 Financing Costs United Way 162,042 Intra Y Expenses Government Contracts/ Grants 1,365,487 218,089 77,055 2,153,051 Current Fixed Asset Purchases Other Expenses Membership Armed Services Programs Aquatics Physical Instruction & Instructional Recreation Day Camp Education and Training Leadership Development Family Life and Child Care Pryme Tyme Community Development TOTAL $362,773 $67,584 $21,528 $29,555 TOTAL 13,225 1,628,349 16,843,279 TOTAL 16,837,434 2011 CONSTITUENCY REPORT $111,893 $12,171 $160,987 $182,744 $995,166 $329,208 $2,273,609 YOUTH other adults adults Males 17 and Under 17,131 Males 18-64 18,983 Males 65 and Older 1,685 Females 17 and Under 14,911 Females 18-64 20,748 Females 65 and Older 1,787 Total 17 and Under 32,024 Total 18-64 39,731 Total 65 and older 3,472 10 2011 donors building a strong foundation Our Legacy Capital Campaigns have allowed the YMCA to construct new facilities and expand and enhance others.
