It is truly wonderful to see our community of Fredericksburg Academy parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, friends, and guests support the incredible students of our school. A great deal of work went into helping all of us “Belive in the Magic” tonight. I would like to thank FA parent and Trustee Karen O’Donnell, event chair, for her leadership and for the countless hours she logged to ensure this evening’s success. I am grateful to all of the parent volunteers who have been working behind the scenes for months to make this event enjoyable for all of you and beneficial for the school. Finally, I would like to thank the many businesses and individuals who have supported FA through sponsorships, auction donations, and advertisements in this catalog—we could not do it without you! “Celebrate FA!” is, first and foremost, a celebration of the amazing learning community created more than two decades ago, the vibrant institution we are today, our future, and most importantly, a celebration of our students. This event represents FA’s second-largest annual fundraiser. Your purchases this evening directly support meaningful opportunities for our students in and beyond the classroom. Thank you, in advance, for your generosity! As I always remind you in this space—bid early, bid often, and remember that every dollar you spend tonight provides our students with the incredible gift of learning. Tonight you will have the opportunity to “raise your paddle” to pledge $5,000, $2,500, $1,000, $500, $250, $100, or $50 to put iPads and other technological tools into the hands of FA students. One hundred percent of your tax-deductible donation will fund individualized learning experiences through the digital portfolio and Exhibit programs. We hope you will consider supporting these programs by making a gift during the “Raise the Paddle” portion of the Live Auction. The following paragraphs explain the programs that will be funded by your generosity: Fredericksburg Academy seeks to create a comprehensive program linking students’ learning experiences throughout their FA careers. Tonight, we are asking for your help to create this powerful, individualized learning experience through the use of digital portfolios. Currently Lower School and Middle School students have started digital portfolios, and it is our vision that these portfolios will become the basis of our new Exhibit program (currently known as Senior Exhibit). The portfolios will empower students to begin the Exhibit journey much earlier by linking their collection of learning experiences from Lower School on. This unique program will cultivate the emotional and intellectual potential of each student throughout his or her FA journey, creating opportunities for reflection, evaluation, and goal-setting. Through curating a portfolio of writing, projects, and presentations from academic classes, the arts, athletics, service, and leadership, students will make connections among disciplines and observations on their learning. As they enter the Upper School and begin the Exhibit process in earnest, students will use their portfolios to identify areas of interest and strength, craft ideas into essential questions, and brainstorm possible independent learning topics. The Exhibit journey will still culminate in a presentation before peers and faculty; however, the whole experience will be longer and deeper, inspired by the digital portfolio’s emphasis on self-reflection and discovery. We are asking for your help tonight to provide our students with the technological tools and infrastructure that will help them grow as learners through the digital portfolio and Exhibit programs. Your tax-deductible gift tonight will allow the Academy to purchase more mobile technology (such as iPads and Chromebooks), provide professional development for faculty, and make necessary improvements to the school’s technological infrastructure. Thank you, in advance, for “raising your paddle” tonight! Your gift will transform our students’ learning. 25 The Rules SILENT AUCTION: 1.
