At one of this Friday, April 22nd’s USPA meetings aimed at bringing more participation and involvement from women players in the USPA, a new Women’s Championship Series Tournament format was introduced. The Championship Series format will consist of Qualifier Tournaments at the 3-6 goal level that will be played in the Summer and Fall of each year around the country, and an annual Championship Finals Tournament to be held in the Spring of the following year (handicap limit to be determined at a later date, but will be a minimum of 4 goals and 6 chukkers). Qualifier Tournaments are open to any woman with a current USPA rating. To participate in the Annual Championship Finals all players must be qualified to enter. Qualification for the Championship Finals will be that each player must meet at least one of the following two criteria; a player must have played in a qualifier event (regardless of win/loss status after the event) or have a current USPA rating of 2 goals or above (in the year of the Finals). If your club would like to host one of these Championship Qualifier Tournaments, all that is required is for the club to submit a USPA Sanctioned Tournament Application with the appropriate fees to the USPA for approval. Goose Creek Polo Club in Middleburg, Virginia has already offered to become the first club to host a qualifier event this summer. Outback Polo Club in Wellington, Florida has offered to host the first ever Women’s Championship Finals Tournament to be held in the spring of 2006. This series of tournaments will be the highest rated USPA women’s polo in the United States today. If you would like to receive a copy of the Championship Tournament Series format or get more information about this tournament, please contact Sunny Hale at 405-3298571. If your club is interested in hosting one of the Qualifier Tournaments you can receive a USPA Sanctioned Tournament Application Form from Amber Owen at the USPA (events@uspolo.org). For more information on how you can become involved in helping to promote the growth of women’s polo please contact USPA Committee Co-Chairs Leslie Ann Masterton at lamfy_ja@yahoo.com and Kris Bowman at polomio@aol.com. A team has four players. Players come back with a fresh mount after each chukker. Running the length on both sides of the field is an 11”- high wooden board that keeps the ball in play. If the ball goes out of bounds (on the sideline) the umpire orders the players to line-up in front of him and throw the ball in from that point where the ball left the field. Incredible New Property A typical defensive play for White. While Black is galloping forward on the line of the ball with the Right of Way, White–ahead of the play–can back the ball to the boards, away from his goal (but should stay on that side of the line of the ball to prevent being called on a crossing foul). Open-angle offside forehand to pass the ball to a teammate from left to right or to shoot on goal. Bowl-in: a game always begins with the umpire throwing the ball towards the players lined-up on either side of the halfway line. Players line-up again after a goal has been scored, and change ends to allow fairness of sides and conditions (wind, sun and ground), much like in tennis for example. Penalty #4 60 yard Penalty Line Penalty #3 40 yard Penalty Line Penalty #2 30 yard Penalty Line Teams change ends after each goal is scored. © 2005 by Frederic Roy, The Morning Line. The grass is kept as smooth and even as possible to allow the horses to safely gallop at speed up to 35 m.p.h. The game is refereed by two mounted umpires (a third man is also officiating from the side). Fouls are called on dangerous riding, illegal bumping, crossing and bad hook, rough or abusive play and appealing for a foul. Most of the fouls, though, will be called on crossing the line. 160 Acres cleared land Perfect for Equestrian or Private Estates Seller Financing Available Asking $7,200,000 Diana Tashman Realtor® Polo & Equestrian Property Specialist 561 346 7955 email: dianatashman@yahoo.com KELLER WILLIAMS R E A L T Y Teak Works.
