FROM THE Principal’s Desk
Dear Friends,
Once again, this year’s Annual Report is not only a reflection of the vitality and health of Sacred
Heart Academy but also stands as a tribute to your generosity that allows us to sustain a program of
academic excellence and plan for the future as we continue the work of “Building the Dream.”
As always our SHA women had much to celebrate this year . . .
• A record 243 graduating seniors, received almost $40 million in scholarships, with an amazing 87% receiving at least one scholarship!
• Six young women received full tuition scholarships to their college of choice. • A record 19 seniors received Athletic Awards/Scholarships.
• Service hours ranged from 20 to 600 hours per student, and we were honored by the Diocese of Rockville Centre for outstanding generosity to the missions.
Thanks to our generous supporters, we have much to celebrate as we gaze out on a beautifully appointed reconfigured
campus ~ including an expanded parking facility for faculty, staff, and visitors, a well-lit walkway from Cathedral Avenue
to the back entrance of the school building (the girls think of it as the “Runway”!), and carefully positioned shrubs, flowers,
and trees that lend a park-like atmosphere to our property. And the soon to be completed SHA’s own “field of dreams” - a
regulation turf field bordered by a 1/5 mile running track - has generated untold excitement among the present student
body as well as those prospective students who visit our campus each day.
As the outdoor expansion continues, we are also focused on the centers of learning indoors in our classrooms, library,
labs, theatre, and gym. In particular, we have been laying the groundwork for the past two years for the launching of our
STEM Program ~ a science, technology, engineering, and math endeavor that we hope will prepare our girls for untold
career opportunities in those fields. In the summer of 2011 and then again in 2012, two faculty members from our science
department started an annual week long science camp for incoming ninth graders that included working in our labs and
building launching rockets. Also, in 2012 we are offering a Research Course to 9th graders that introduces them to the
methodology used in sceintific research.
Due to your generosity we were also able to make the SHA education more affordable for 79 families, who received a
combined $290,525 in scholarships and financial aid.
Yes, this is indeed an exciting time to be on campus and see SHA’s successes past and future, inside and outside the
building. Your interest, financial support, and presence in so many ways is both heartening and necessary for us to realize
the goals of “Building the Dream.” Thank you ~ and blessings in abundance!

Building the Dream Capital Campaign
Dear Sacred Heart Academy Families and Friends:
I am humbled to present to you the Annual Report for Sacred Heart Academy, capturing the past
twelve months, ending June 30, 2012. I can only define this past year as extraordinary, marked by our
community’s tremendous generosity. Extraordinary in that Sacred Heart kicked off its “Building the
Dream” capital campaign with a $5 million goal, lead by our wonderful co-chairs Steve and Nancy
Vincent P ’05, ’09, ’11, and Theresa Palamaro Ahlstrom ’79. In the campaign’s first year, our community
donated more than $3 million in cash and new pledges. Extraordinary, in that 40% of what has been
raised so far has come from our alumnae alone. Extraordinary, in that your participation in annual giving
and events generated over $745,000. And extraordinary, because your support for our students -- your
daughters, nieces, granddaughters and neighbors – reminds us that in sending them to Sacred Heart
Academy, you are instrumental in carrying out the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph -- pairing God’s
inclusive love with education and an aspiration to excellence for our future women leaders.
Our “Building the Dream” capital campaign was announced with a flourish at the annual Dinner Dance in March 2012. One of the
highlights of the dinner was a generous donor’s challenge to the school: for every additional $1 million raised by the March 2013 Dinner
Dance, the donor will match $250,000 up to $500,000. We need your help to meet this challenge - our capital campaign has a long way to
go, with goals that touch all aspects of SHA life, including enhancements to our academic programs by investing in science, technology,
engineering, and math (STEM) training for our students, a redesign of our campus to include long-dreamed-of athletic fields, and
expanding resources for our faculty by providing them with the tools and compensation needed to stay at the top of their fields.
In addition to the “Building the Dream” capital campaign, our annual fund drive continues to seek support for our scholarship
and financial aid programs, so that we can continue to attract the best and brightest students, regardless of their ability to pay tuition.
Unrestricted gifts and annual support to the school are always needed.
We know this is true – a SHA “woman of heart” remains true to her faith, her school, her friends, her family, her community, and her
world. We continue to be inspired by you, and in turn, we hope that the success and inclusive love embedded in our students inspires you.
All of what we, educators and students, are able to accomplish and dream at Sacred Heart Academy begins with you, our supporters. You
are current and past parents, alumnae and their spouses, and friends.

FROM THE Chair - SHA Board of Trustees Finance Committee
Dear Friends of Sacred Heart Academy,
The Board of Trustees Finance Committee provides guidance and oversight of the Academy’s current and future financial plans. For the
year ended June 30, 2012, the school operated with a balanced budget while adding to its financial security and expanding its physical
campus assets. Total operating revenues, exclusive of fundraising and capital campaign gifts, totaled $9.8 million. 83% of the operating
revenues are provided by tuition and fees, while auxiliary income, student activities, and New York State mandated services supplied
another $1.4 million (15%) of total income. The largest expense categories are salaries and fringe benefits at $6.6 million (67% of total
expenses) and plant-related expenses of $1.6 million (16%). One of the school’s fastest-growing costs, scholarship and financial aid,
reached $290,525, of which more than $158,000 was funded from current and prior year gifts received exclusively for that purpose.
As of June 30, 2012, the Academy had total assets of $14.1 million, with $4.9 million in liabilities and $9.2 million in net assets. $4.5
million is invested in the Corde Fund, the school’s long-term investment fund, which earned a 3.9% total return for the year. The Board’s
Investment Committee directs the investment strategy of the Fund which also provides collateral for the school’s $3.1 million line of
credit. At June 30, 2012, operating cash balances of $2.7 million include $700,000 of restricted gift balances ($400,000 for financial aid,
$200,000 for STEM academic programs, and $100,000 for athletic fields). Total plant assets of the school amounted to $6.7 million, net
of accumulated depreciation. These assets include campus expansion costs of $5.0 million spent in fiscal 2012 which were funded from
school capital reserves, capital campaign gifts, and the credit line. The Finance Committee is pleased with the school’s growth on all
fronts, and is committed to supporting the Academy by maintaining sustainable and mission-oriented financial goals.

Opportunities to Support Sacred Heart Academy
Cash Contributions
The donation of cash can be either unrestricted
or designated to support a specific program
or scholarship. Payment schedules can be
individually designed.
Memorials
Honor the memory of a loved one by supporting
educational programs for the young women of
Sacred Heart Academy. A letter acknowledging
the donation will be sent to the family.
Tributary Gifts
A donation can be made to commemorate
special occasions. The person being honored
will receive a letter informing them of your gift.
Sacred Heart Academy Tree of Life
The “Tree of Life”, located in Sacred Heart
Academy, commemorates those who have
passed away. A gift of $250 for a gold leaf is an
opportunity to remember an individual who has
made a difference in your life.
Securities and Trusts
Gifts of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or
securities can prove to be the most beneficial
way to lend your support. Donations through
a trust can provide an opportunity to acquire
major tax benefits and receive a return from
the assets. Usually funded through appreciated
securities or property, trusts can ensure a steady
sheltered annual income.
Real Estate
Charitable gifts of houses, condominiums,
commercial property, and other types of real
estate can be extremely advantageous for tax
purposes.
Life Insurance
Consider donating a Life Insurance Policy. It
is possible to name Sacred Heart Academy as
owner or the beneficiary of the policy.
Wills and Bequests
You can make a difference in the education of
young women of Sacred Heart Academy with a
charitable bequest specified in your will. If you
already have a will, a Codicil (a written change
or addition) can be added.
