So What`s all this SHOULDER talk - Henry Vyner
So What’s all this SHOULDER talk ? He alone carried our anxiety & Mightily shouldered our pain . . . He was defiled to pay for our rebellion His body was smashed to pieces for our sins, The price to get us peace with God was laid on his GIANT SHOULDERS Alone from Isaiah 53 Will Houston - on the Shoulders’ of GIANTS To accompany the book : Love Joy About the Artist & the Album: Born in Southport 1972, Henry now lives among the mountains of the northern Lake District with his wife, Ruth and 3 children. He holds Masters level qualifications in Landscape Architecture and is the managing director of a property company (a glorified builder!) Henry is also Assistant Pastor and Youth Pastor of Cockermouth Christian Centre. “I have played the guitar since I was 7 and been in bands since I was 17. Though I wouldn’t class myself as a ‘Muso’ as it is not something that has particularly defined me as a man, more a tool to tell people about the Lord Jesus. After a bout of cancer in 2005, I wrote the book ‘Will Houston - on the Shoulders’ of Giants’, as a map to adulthood for young men and women. We had a lot of work on in 2006 and the book didn’t get finished until spring 2007.” Patience “I started the album straight away, it seemed a natural progression. I have only written about 4 songs in my life but there was plenty of material to go at from the book and the songs came very naturally over a 10-day period in spring 2007. The book has such huge characters and vast dramas that they cry out to be expanded in songs; you can say so much more with music. We used artistic devices like the in outdoor interviews and ‘live concert’ feel to further communicate the story, which was all important to the music side of the project. It’s been fun, I could this for a living, sure beats building!” Kindness Tom Tyson - Bass / Guitars / Recording Engineer Visit Tom at: http://www.themusicfarm.co.uk It is hard to express my thanks in words for all Tom’s tireless support , session work and vast experience that he ploughed into this album. There cannot be a studio this side of heaven that offers such a complete and professional service. Tom is a member of The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters and has been a professional musician since he was 17. Less than two years later he was working as bass guitarist with The Freddie Starr Band. After a one year stint with the band and after many T.V. and recording sessions, Tom joined sixties singer songwriter Gene Pitney and was to tour the world as a member of his band. After several years touring, Tom decided to return to his native Cumbria and establish his own recording studio. The 'Music Farm' is a professional 24 track studio in an idyllic two and a half acre setting overlooking the Lakeland fells. Tom has now been in the recording field for over 20 years and has become a successful writer/producer, earning his first gold disc in 1998 and working as both producer and session musician in many famous studios, including George Martin's 'Air Studios', Trever Horn's 'Sarm', 'Pye' Studios London, C.T.S. Wembley, 'Advision' London and 'First Run Studios' (Nashville USA). Goodness Albert Lee - Lead Guitar, Piano, Mandolin Pictures of Albert with Eric Clapton and Cheryl Crow at the 2007 Crossroads festival Having Albert play on this album has been a huge privilege and has meant we have literally been ‘on the shoulder’s’ of one of the 20th century’s music Giants. Voted by Fender for 5 years as best Country/Rock guitarist and still respected as ‘a virtuoso’s virtuoso’ and one of the finest guitarists in the world, Albert has played with the Beatles, the Crickets, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, Joe Cocker and Eric Clapton. It was all a bit unreal, I had met Albert before but to see a man, taught honky-tonk by Jerry Lee Lewis, hammering away to my ‘Bullfighters’ song was...well, very hard to put into words....and don’t get me started on his guitar! When Joe Cocker said “Albert’s a man who doesn’t know the meaning of the word ego”, he was right. Gentleness The IRISH SESSIONS Richard Nelson - Steel / Dobro Richard turned his back on a promising career in Accounting to become a full time musician, which I am particularly glad about. He has played and toured with Van Morrison and Daniel O' Donnell amongst many others. He’s played at the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall, Wembley Stadium and done TV appearances with Rod Stewart and Van Morrison. Today Richard is one of the world’s foremost Steel Guitar players and I am still pinching myself at the awesome stuff he has done for this album. Visit him at: http://www.ricknelson.workzsites.com/page/page/1595148.htm Charlie Arkins – Fiddle and Harmonica Refered to in the media as a the Irish ‘fiddle-playing supremo’, this former psychiatric nurse from Dublin has had an international music career spanning nearly four decades and was recently awarded ‘Musician of the Year’ at the CIEM awards by President Mary McAleese for his services rendered to music. He has been a band member of the Virginians, the Nashville Ramblers, the Grassroots Band, the Cotton Mill Boys, the John Hogan band, Jimmy Buckley's band and the Robert Mizzell band. Charlie and his family have lived in Athboy, Co. Meath, Ireland where he still remains a much sort after session musician. (You can contact him through Richard Nelson – see above) Faithfulness The LAKELAND SESSIONS John Marcangelo - Drums & Keyboards (Hammond Organ, Piano, Strings) Leaving his native Whitehaven, John went to Leeds College of Music and trained as a classical musician (Piano & Percussion). It was here that he met and played with violinist Mik Kominski (later ELO) who would later ask John to record an album with Violinski. From that Album came John’s well known hit; ‘Clogdance’ in 1979. John went on a European tour and recorded 2 further albums with Violinski. He has latterly worked on Cruise ships around the world with his wife and written ‘Clog dance—the Musical’ who six night debut in Whitehaven, June 2007 played to sold out houses. Even during this busy period, John came to finish his work on the album. He is an awesome musician and it has been a huge education working with such an accomplished musician. Mandy Leonard - Female Backing Vocals Mandy has been vocally trained since the age of 6. Mandy is a qualified vocal coach and has helped many singers to accomplish their dream of becoming professional performers. She and Steve were great to work with, they made doing multi layered vocals look so easy and we had a lot of laughs. Steve Falcon - Male Backing Vocals Steve sings and plays guitar in the same band as Mandy and over the past few years has performed all over the world on various major cruise lines, and in international 5 star hotels. He has worked with Albert Lee, Alan Hawkshaw (Olivia Newton-John), and Mik Kaminski (ELO), Jackie Rawe (Shakatak), and often works with ITV television and BBC Radio Find out more about Mandy and her band ‘Impulse’ at: http://www.impulselive.co.uk Humility The SUPER-MUMS Clare Emerson - Lead Female Vocals Clare grew up in the New Forest and moved to Penrith, Cumbria in 1997 when she and Graham married. They now have 4 wonderful children, (0 to 7 years) who they home educate. Clare is a worship leader and Sunday School teacher at their home church in Penrith where Graham is now the Pastor. Clare is one of those dynamic, busy mums and I really appreciated her taking so much time out to sing on ‘Dora’s song’. Ruth Vyner-Brooks - Lead Female Vocals Having Ruth sing on ‘I will wait’ was something I had secretly wanted but never thought possible as Ruth is naturally quite shy and even after 10 years of marriage I had never taken her to have a lead female voice – typical husband! Anyway she suggested it one night out of the blue so we got on the grand piano and even though it is a very difficult key for a woman to sing, she sounded really good and very expressive. Most of the love ballads on this album were inspired by my relationship with this remarkable woman and it couldn’t have been more real doing this particular song with the woman who had waited and prayed since she was a girl for God’s choice of partner for her. (She laughingly said just now that ‘Musical’ was on her ‘desirable but not essential’ list when she prayed for a husband!) Self Control Damon McRea – Guitar The Nippers I taught Damon in Sunday school since he was about 9 and it does not seem like yesterday when I gave him and his friend their first guitar lessons! I think he is the one person I’ve ever taught that has actually carried on playing! Turns out he’s a load better than me now, which I’m glad about! Damon is in another successful band called ‘Brightside’ and had just finished working as a Life Guard to train as a Police Community Support officer. He loves all things musical from contemporary pop to classic rock, ska and blues. God sent him a dream showing him that I would invite him to play with us, so when I called him the next day to ask, he didn’t take too long to say yes! He’s done an awesome job on the song ‘Rejoice’ and I also aim to get a rocked up version of ‘If the Rocks could speak’ on the website that we recorded together. Charlotte Boustead – Actress / Student Charlotte is Jonathon’s older sister and another one of my better-behaved Sunday school students from long ago. Charlotte has recently graduated from Lancaster in Health Care and Social Science and is currently at Durham training to teach these subjects in secondary schools. She did the voice of the nurse in the dramatisation Jonathon Boustead – Actor I’ve known Jonathon since he was a very cheeky 7 year old in my Sunday School class! It has been a privilege and a delight to see him grow up into such a godly young man. He started his acting career at School when he played Bill Sykes in ‘Oliver’ and Fat Sam in’ Bugsy Malone’. He then took Drama at GCSE and A level before getting a place at University of Cumbria to study Drama with Creative Writing. When he has finished there, Jonathon hopes to work in Theatre, film and Television as an actor. He was the voice of Will Houston in the Hospital Drama on the CD, my friend Eileen, (a retired nurse!) was the voice of the nurse and I did Dr Abdullah. If you wish to hire him now, you can get in touch through this website. 1 Fruit with 9 Flavours = 1 New life The PROs Valerie Morgan – Audio / Dramatisation recording and production I’ve known Val for years but only had a vague idea about what she did before I contacted her in the summer of 2007. It has been amazing to work with someone so reliable, creative and professional; she managed to turn my vague ideas into a series of stunning audio productions and dramatisations as if it were the easiest thing in the world, which, of course it is not! Val first cut her teeth in journalism while working for CNN in Atlanta, USA. She returned to the UK in 2001 to begin a career with the BBC and she's been making radio and television programmes ever since. As a keen globetrotter and conservationist, Val has also worked with endangered Leatherback Turtles in Costa Rica and Whale Sharks in Australia. Nowadays, Cumbria is her home and base as a freelance writer and producer. You can contact Val at entilent@yahoo.com Alexandra Boustead – Art and Photography Genius Yes, you guessed it; Alex is Jonathon and Charlotte’s sister and another graduate of my Sunday school. Alex has done a first rate job of packaging the image of the album and I am very grateful to her for working to such tights deadlines. I turned up for Sunday lunch at her parent’s and asked if we could have the shoot after I’d finished my ice-cream! I borrowed some trendy shirts and hair wax from her brother and gave her 50 minutes to shoot me before I dashed off to a meeting. As you can see she pulled it off in classic style, imagine what she could really do if she had more than 2 minutes to plan it! You can book her at alxmb@hotmail.co.uk. & Finally...
