Nail salons have become
as much a fixture of our
strip malls as bagel shops,
juice joints and some coffee shop called Starbucks
(gotta check that place out
sometime).
When a day at a luxury
resort for a manicure and
pedicure just isn’t in the
cards, what’s a nail-challenged person supposed to
do? Are all neighborhood
nail salons created equal?
A salon in Costa Mesa
that is curiously spelled
really nails it when it
comes to reasonably
priced pedicures, according to most reviews on
Yelp,
Does Christerpher’s
Nails & Spa make the cut?
Two Blonds just had to
find out. We love tough assignments.

We are resting in three
of the salon’s 12 new spa
chairs (very attractive,
with cherrywood arm
rests, beige fabric and copper-colored tubs) when
our manicurists hand us
individually wrapped packages of sanitized tools, asking us to verify that the
packages are sealed.
Nice touch! We’re loving
this place. And we haven’t
even mentioned the complimentary wine bar.
Open for about seven
months, Christerpher’s
has two spaces in the strip
mall – one with six chairs
that is reserved for the

we are in, and our noses
are happy.
With the wine bar, two
ottomans, a copper-tiled
ceiling, brown and gold ceramic tile floor, dim lighting, burnt-orange walls
and classical piano music
playing, Christerpher’s
feels more like a lounge
than a nail salon.
The family-operated salon encourages customers
to bring in their own adult
beverages and hosts private parties, says Tony Le,
32, of Garden Grove. Le’s
wife, Tina Huynh, owns
the salon, which takes its
name from Tony’s brother,
Christerpher, who helps
run the business.
Most men avoid nail salons like they do all-day excursions to the mall, but
Christerpher’s goes out of
its way to lure the dudes.
Having five male manicurists helps, as does the
gender-neutral colors and
vibe.
Irvine businessman Joe
Melican, 46, is getting his
first pedicure as he checks
sports scores on his phone
and sips a beverage.
“Pedicures are the secret that women have kept
from men for years,” says
Melican, who offers advice
to guys thinking of baring
their feet for the first time:
“Don’t let (the manicurist)
remove your calluses. As a
man, you need calluses.”
Greg gets a basic $18
pedicure, and spends $5
more to get his toes buffed
and topped with clear
gloss.
Kathleen subjects herself to the $31 deluxe pedicure, which includes a
mint-salt scrub to exfoliate
her feet and legs, an aro-
matherapy foot mask, and
10 minutes of a lotion massage followed by a massage using mineral oil and
sea salt.
Reina, 17, gets Christerpher’s $46 “Royal Pedicure,” which includes a
hot-stone foot and calf
massage. Reina and Kathleen also get their toes
painted, choosing pleasing
colors from top brands Essie, OPI and Orly.
Located a short drive
down Bristol Street from
South Coast Plaza, Christerpher’s may need a spell
checker, but for Two
Blonds, it doesn’t need
much hyping to convince
you to check out. OK, maybe some large, flat-screen
TVs playing sports would
help, but maybe we’re just
being picky.
