FAQs Tutorials Quick Start Menus Introduction Installation Capabilities In Smart Sizer Platinum, you can Convert designs to other formats View designs in realistic 3-D mode Resize designs Change density of stitches in designs Merge designs Copy, paste Mirror, rotate Insert, delete, move individual stitches Delete, resize and manipulate individual colors Insert trim commands and color change commands Convert stitch types on condensed format designs using the Smart Stitch function Introduction 21 Resizing Designs Changing Density At times, you may wish to change the density, or distance between the stitches. For instance, if you will be embroidering on a very lightweight fabric, or with a heavy thread, you may wish to place fewer stitches in the design. If you will be embroidering with a light thread or on a hard-to-cover fabric, you may want the stitches to be placed closer together. Both options are available to you in Smart Sizer Platinum using the Density icon on the tool bar or by selecting Density Settings from Options located on the Menu Bar. Menus Quick Start Tutorials Smart Sizer Platinum will recalculate the stitch count to be appropriate for the new size, retaining the original density value. The density value is simply a measurement of the distance between the stitches. When resizing, we usually want the distance between the stitches to remain the same; it is the stitch count that should change. FAQs When designs are resized, it is necessary to recalculate the stitch count to be appropriate for the new size. If you make a design smaller, and the stitch count remains the same, the stitches will be placed closer together, which may result in thread breaks and even needle breakage. The resulting design will appear bulky and feel hard to the touch. On the other hand, if a design is enlarged and the stitch count remains the same, the same number of stitches will be placed in a larger area, resulting in poor fabric coverage. Introduction Installation Understanding Stitch Density 22 Smart Sizer Platinum FAQs Tutorials Quick Start Menus Introduction Installation Smart Stitch When changing the size of designs, the stitch type of some sections may be unsuitable for the new size. When working with condensed files having the extension gnc, a Smart Sizer feature called Smart Stitch will automatically change the stitch type to be more compatible to the new size. You can turn off the Smart Stitch feature by selecting the Options drop down menu, and selecting Preferences. Remove the check mark beside the box labeled “Enable Smart Stitch.” Most machine manufacturers recommend that you do not exceed 10mm in stitch length. If you disable Smart Stitch, and you have selected “Realistic View” on the View menu, the program will alert you to stitches longer than 10mm by eliminating them from the display. Why would you disable Smart Stitch? It is not recommended, but if you had some design elements that were borderline in stitch length and you wanted to keep the satin stitches, this would be possible. When Smart Stitch does change satin stitches to fill, it does so for the entire group of stitches, not just the ones that exceed the maximum stitch length. This will give a more pleasing appearance than a mixture of stitch types. Understanding Stitch Types Satin stitches, which have one needle penetration on each side, can become too long when designs are enlarged. When satin stitches exceed 10mm, or a length that you select in Preferences, the Smart Stitch feature will automatically convert them into fill Running Stitch stitches. Rather than a single needle penetration on each side of a column, fill stitches have multiple penetrations across a column or shape. 23 Menus When designs are reduced in size, it is possible for satin stitches to become too short, which can result in thread breaks or thread clusters beneath your fabric. In this instance the satin stitches are automatically converted into running stitches by Smart Stitch. Introduction Installation Introduction Using Batch Conversion Click on the Batch Conversion tool from the Main Tool Bar at the top of your screen to convert a group of designs to a single supported format of your choice. The source files may be a variety of formats. The Target Directory may be different from the Source Directory. If there are any properties of the Source formats that are incompatible with the Target format, you will get a message stating which files were not converted, if any. To use the batch converter, place check marks in the appropriate boxes for your operation and then click OK. Quick Start Fill Stitch Tutorials Satin Stitch FAQs Running Stitch 24 Smart Sizer Platinum Editing Designs Smart Sizer Platinum allows you to gain more control over your designs by allowing you to control individual stitches. If you have an outline that is consistently off, you can move the stitches into line with the fill object. Navigation is made simple through the use of a Histogram bar near the top of the screen. The Histogram shows color blocks in the stitching sequence. Directly below the Histogram is a slider bar that allows you to navigate through the design. There is an Action Mode Box, that lists two different modes of operation for your Smart Sizer Platinum. FAQs Tutorials Quick Start Menus Introduction Installation The Editing Functions The two modes are: Design - In this mode you can view the design, use the navigation tools to move the crosshair through the design, mirror, rotate, cut, copy, paste and resize designs. Use this mode for most standard operations that don’t require the other functions listed for the edit mode. Edit - In this mode, you can perform the editing functions such as insert, delete and move stitches, insert trims and color changes. While in this mode the crosshair is around the selected stitch point and a rubber band is attached to the selected point. FAQs Tutorials Quick Start Menus Introduction Installation Introduction 25 Screen Overview 26 Smart Sizer Platinum FAQs Tutorials Quick Start Menus Introduction Installation Navigating Designs You can move the cursor through the stitches using the slider bar beneath the Histogram or using the arrow keys on your computer’s keyboard. A small cross indicates the cursor position in the design. The cross moves through the design as you navigate. Using the slider bar, you can navigate in these increments: Click on the slider and hold the left mouse button to move freely through the stitches. Click on the arrow to the right of the slider and move forward one stitch. Click on the bar to the right of the slider and move forward 50 stitches. Click on the arrow to the left of the slider and move backward one stitch. Click on the bar to the left of the slider and move backward 50 stitches. Using a wheeled mouse, you can move in one stitch increments. Move forward by rolling the wheel forward, and backward by rolling the wheel backward. See format descriptions later in this chapter for a description of condensed formats. You can view sections of your design by clicking on the Next Color or Previous Color tools from the Design Tool Bar on the left side of your screen. It may be faster to navigate to the desired point in your design by displaying only the color section that contains the desired location. FAQs End key = Last stitch 28 Smart Sizer Platinum FAQs Tutorials Quick Start Menus Introduction Installation Inserting and Deleting Stitches When you have navigated to the point in a design where you would like to insert one or more stitches, press the Insert key on your keyboard to activate the Insert function. A small icon labeled INS will appear on the status bar . When this indicator is present, you may insert stitches. To insert stitches in the Edit mode, click on the Insert key to begin inserting stitches. The letters INS appear on the Status Bar near the bottom right of your screen when “Insert Stitches” is enabled. While the INS is displayed on the Status Bar, a new stitch will be inserted each time you click on the left mouse button. You may also delete stitches in a design. To delete stitches while in Edit mode, press the Delete key on your keyboard. Inserting Trims and Lock Down Stitches Smart Sizer Platinum performs the insertion of trim commands for semi-commercial and commercial embroidery machine models. This option is activated from the Options menu. Click on Options, then Preferences, and place a check in the box beside “Edit Trims” . When this box is checked in Select the type and size of Lock Stitch that will be most compatible with the stitches in that area of your design. For example, if the stitches in that area are satin stitches in a vertical direction, the Vertical lock stitch would be the most invisible. Menus Quick Start If you wish to insert a lock down stitch, navigate to the point in the design where you want the lock down and click on the box labeled “Lock” at the upper right portion of your screen. Tutorials Navigate to the point in your design where you want to trim. The trim will be inserted BEFORE the point that you have selected. Place a check mark in the box when you are at the desired location. . Introduction Installation 29 preferences, you will be warned that the current design must be saved and reopened to be affected by this change. When this preference has been activated, the box labeled “Trim Before” will become active on the upper right portion of your screen after selecting Edit Mode and navigating to at least the second stitch in the design. FAQs Introduction 30 Smart Sizer Platinum If you want to insert a color change in a design, navigate to the point where you want to change the color while in Edit mode. After moving to the desired location, click on the Insert Color tool from the Design Tool Bar on the left side of the screen. After you have inserted the color change, there will be an additional color chip on the Color Bar at the lower left side of the screen. Click on the new color chip to open the Select Color screen to select a new color for the selection. In the illustrations below you can see the effect of each command. Normal Mirror Horizontal Mirror Vertical Center has a fly out menu to choose Both Axis, Horizontal Axis or Vertical Axis. Center Both Axis is used to get your design precisely in the center of the hoop. After merging multiple designs, Click on Edit, Select All and Center, Both Axis to place the new creation in the exact center of the hoop. In the example shown on the following page, there are three individual files of a bird on the screen. When each bird is selected and the command Center Horizontal Axis applied, the result is as shown in the example Center Horizontal. When each bird is selected individually and the command Center Vertical Axis applied, the result is as shown in the example Center Vertical. Use these commands to align designs in a straight line, either vertically or horizontally. Applying Center Both Axis to each design would place each one precisely in the center of the grid, one on top of the other. 39 Center Horizontal Original Tutorials FAQs Rotate has an accompanying dialog box to type in the degrees of rotation. You may type in any number from 1 to 359, and negative numbers are allowed. There is also a Drag/Rotate tool on the Design Tool Bar on the left side of the screen. Hoop Size lets you view your designs in a hoop that fits your machine. If your hoop size is not listed, you can type in your own custom dimensions. You can also use this Custom Hoop option to check that your creation fits within a certain fabric dimension. Density Settings allows the user to make the stitches more dense or less dense according to the fabric or thread weight to be used. To adjust according to thread weight, click on the thread weight to be used. To adjust according to fabric type, click on Custom Density. The base of the setting is 100 percent. A larger number will produce more stitches, and a smaller number will produce fewer stitches. For more detail on density, see the Introduction chapter. More options are available by clicking on the Advanced button when using expanded format designs. NOTE: When using condensed format designs with the extension gnc, the advanced button is not available. Fill Stitch Length - a larger number lengthens each stitch in the fill stitch areas, possibly resulting in a fill stitch with a softer appearance, and with a lower stitch count. A lower number shortens the length of each fill stitch, possibly resulting in a fill stitch with a tighter appearance. This may be desirable when placing lettering or other elements on top of a fill. Run Stitch Length - A larger number lengthens running stitches, and a smaller number shortens running stitches. You may wish to reduce this value if you have running stitch underlay popping out from underneath satin or fill stitch areas. Maximum Stitch Length - the default of 10mm is recommended. This setting helps to keep the machine movements smooth and edges of the embroidery crisp. Menus Fill Stitch Density - a larger number places the rows of stitches in fill stitch areas closer together for better coverage, resulting in a higher stitch count. A lower number places the rows of fill stitches farther apart for lighter coverage, resulting in a lower stitch count. Quick Start Column Stitch Density - a larger number places satin stitches, also called column stitches, closer together for better coverage, resulting in a higher stitch count. A smaller number increases the distance between the stitches, for lighter coverage, resulting in a lower stitch count. Tutorials The Advanced button on the Density Settings screen gives many options when using expanded format designs. You may use these settings with any supported format other than gnc. To use the advanced setting with gnc format designs, simply make them the proper size, and then save in any other supported format. For example if you always save your designs for a Viking, it may be set here instead of changing the file type every time you save. This option will split the design at every 12th color change, according to the requirements of certain machine models. FAQs Tutorials Quick Start Menus Introduction Installation Preferences The setting above is for Pfaff PCS users. The first option saves files that are 100% compatible Pfaff PCS. The second option will split the design at every 16th color change, as required by certain machine models. Introduction Installation FAQs Check enable Smart Stitch to maintain the stitching integrity of your embroidery creations. Smart Stitch is a function of the software that is activated only for the condensed format gnc. If satin stitch columns become too wide through resizing, they will be automatically converted to a fill stitch. If satin stitch columns become too narrow because of size reduction, the column will be converted to a running stitch. Menus Check Maximize Design on Opening to set every design loaded into Lettering Pro to open to its maximum size on the screen. Quick Start When a design is split, the file name will be renamed with an A, B, C etc. at the end of the file. For example; if you have a design named 16044.GNC and this design has 13 color changes in it, the file will be saved as 16044_A.HUS and 16044_B.HUS. 43 Tutorials Menus Selecting the appropriate setting shown above assures Janome/New Home software users that saved SEW creations will be compatible with Scan-n-Sew PC V1.x. FAQs Tutorials Quick Start Menus Introduction Installation 44 Smart Sizer Platinum A check mark beside the box “Clean-up ‘Junk’ Stitches” will enhance your lettering integrity. Cleanup “Junk” Stitches is a function which cleans up any stitch that is smaller than the selected value. The default is 0.5mm. This means that any stitch within a 1/2 mm will be removed from any lettering within a 90 degree window. The 90 degree window ensures that lock down stitches do not get eliminated. Such small stitches could cause thread breaks and will not be missed in the appearance of your lettering. A check mark beside the box “Do not use Size Express for Scaling ‘Expanded’ designs” will deactivate the capability for stitches to be recalculated for the new size. When making a size recduction, stitch count will not be decreased for the smaller size, resulting in a heavier density, When making a size enlargement, stitch count will not be increased for the larger size, resulting in a ligher density.
