FoundationFocus The official publication of the TGH Foundation Spring 2016 2016 NIGHT AT THE CIRCUS The Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Foundation’s 25th Annual “Night at the Circus” was a big success! This year’s event was held on January 7, 2016, at Amalie Arena, and the event committee was chaired by Teale Smith and Mary Taggart. Teale and Mary served as vice chairs for the last two years and hit the ground running, exceeding their goal! The committee added new fun elements to the Patrons’ Party. With the help of their dynamic committee, the chairs continued to raise awareness for TGH and the TGH Foundation throughout the community. Each year $2,500 sponsors and above are invited to attend the Patrons’ Party preceding the circus performance. This year 500 guests feasted on delicious treats while the circus cast, jugglers, balloon twisters and DJ entertained our guests. Whether getting their faces painted like their favorite character or hamming it up in the photo booth, all had a wonderful time. This year’s new “Elephant Trunks” were also on display, thanks to those who sponsored them. Net proceeds of over $235,000 from this year’s event will benefit TGH’s Children’s Medical Center. The TGH Foundation and Circus sponsors also donated 1,300 tickets to local charities this year so some of those less fortunate would have an opportunity to attend and experience the thrill of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Circus – The Greatest Show on Earth ®. Continued on page 4 Buck and Eleanor McInnis and family, Tampa Bay Steel, celebrate another year as our Entertainment Sponsor! Patrons’ Party veterans pose with the Ringmaster! Jim Burkhart, TGH President & CEO, and Robin DeLaVergne, Executive Director, TGH Foundation, accept a very special additional grant from Ringling Bros® on the circus floor! From the Chair our Entertainment Sponsor, and the Lightning Foundation, our Patrons’ Party Sponsor again this year. I am pleased to report to you that the Foundation completed a very successful 2015, and we have you, our donors, to thank for that. In this issue of the FoundationFocus, we highlight donors who made gifts to the Foundation during 2015 starting at $500. Without your ongoing support we would not be able to purchase equipment for Tampa General Hospital (TGH), provide scholarships or make funds available for research, just to name a few of the ways that the TGH Foundation supports the hospital. The TGH Foundation will host its 19th Annual Gala on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at the Tampa Convention Center. This year’s guests will be invited to channel their inner superhero and experience A Night to Marvel — Celebrating the Superheroes of Health Care. Those attending will have an opportunity to experience great entertainment, a live auction, plated dinner, open bar and many other exciting activities. Dianne and Mickey Jacob are chairing this year’s gala, and Pam and Les Muma are our Honorary Chairs. Ali St. Syr and Jack Watters are chairing the After Party. This year, the Annual Night at the Circus celebrated its 25th Anniversary. The Tampa General Hospital Foundation is very fortunate to have a strong partnership with Feld Entertainment. Since its inception, this special event has raised over $1 million for the TGH Children’s Medical Center. Our co-chairs Teale Smith and Mary Taggart and their committee made sure that all of the children and adults experienced a very special evening. Also thanks to our ticket coordinator, McIver Berner Grim, who made sure tickets found the way to over 1,300 deserving children from local nonprofits. A big thank you goes to our sponsors who donated tickets to local children’s charities. I would especially like to recognize our Big Top Sponsors, McKibbon Hotel Management and Taggart Properties, Inc. Ringling Visit Tampa General Hospital Wins Consumer Choice Award For 10 Straight Years For the 10th straight year, TGH was named the Consumer Choice winner by National Research Corporation. The annual award identifies hospitals across the United States that health care consumers choose as having the highest quality, best reputation and best doctors and nurses. Winners are determined by consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings collected in the company’s Market Insights survey, the largest online consumer health care survey in the country. National Research surveys more than 300,000 households in the contiguous 48 states and the District of Columbia. Hospitals named by consumers are analyzed and ranked based on Core Based Statistical Areas defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, with winning facilities being ranked the highest. A complete list of winners can be found at nationalresearch.com/ConsumerChoice. TGH is the only hospital in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater market, and one of just 19 in the state, to receive this recognition. The winning hospitals were listed in the Oct. 12, 2015 issue of Modern Healthcare. We are honored to congratulate this year’s winners on a job well done,” said Brian Wynne, vice president of Business Development at National Research. Craig A. Tampa General Hospital,” said Robin DeLaVergne, Senior Vice President, TGH, and Executive Director of the TGH Foundation. Craig Moran has recently joined the staff of the Tampa General Hospital Foundation as the Director of Development and Major Gifts. His concentration will be on the major gifts and planned giving programs. Craig brings more than 19 years of experience in fundraising and nonprofit management. He has worked in fundraising for health care, cultural and educational institutions and social services agencies. Craig earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations and area studies from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. Craig served for 22 years in the U.S. Army/National Guard as an Infantry Officer. After a successful tour in Afghanistan, he retired in 2005 from the Florida Army National Guard. Craig’s professional fundraising experience includes Jupiter Medical Foundation, Bon Secours Richmond Healthcare Foundation and Goettler Associates Inc. (a fundraising consulting firm serving nonprofit organizations nationwide). “My wife Diane and I are thrilled to return to the Tampa Bay area to live and work within its geographic beauty, extraordinary cultural character, excellent health care facilities and strong economic growth,” he said. For more information on giving opportunities or planned giving please visit https://www.tgh.org/foundation_donor.htm. Craig can be contacted at cmoran@tgh.org or (813) 844-7560. “We are excited to have Craig on board. The scope of his work with the TGH Foundation will help us to meet our community’s growing needs for charitable support to sustain, strengthen and grow our ability to provide world-class care to those whom we serve. He will be an asset to our organization as well as to those served by 9 Integrative Arts in Medicine Program Empowers Patients in Special Ways through the program, chaired by Dick and Francine Dobkin. This program has benefitted thousands of patients and is offered to patients at no additional cost and is not reimbursed by insurance. Costs to provide the program at TGH are fully funded through philanthropic dollars. The focus of the mini-campaign is to secure private contributions to support and sustain this program. On January 14, 2016, the Dobkins hosted a reception to introduce the program to potential donors. Dr. Sheela Chokshi, Physician Leader, Integrative Healthcare at TGH, and her team discussed available treatments, techniques and sessions provided to adults and children who are inpatients at TGH. Dr. Chokshi stated, “It has been my life’s dream to incorporate an Integrative Arts in Medicine Program into mainstream medical care to bring patient and practitioner together in a dynamic partnership dedicated to optimizing the patient’s health and healing. Our program at Tampa General Hospital does just that and focuses on the whole person, recognizing the subtle interactions of mind, body, spirit and emotion. This approach has had a direct impact on the vitality and well-being of those adults and children we have served and continue to serve.” Francine Dobkin, Sheela S. Chokshi, M.D., and Dick Dobkin In 2004, Tampa General Hospital identified the need to establish an Integrative Arts in Medicine Program. Ten years later, the program, under the leadership of Dr. Sheela Chokshi, continues to grow, and more physicians are referring their patients for treatment by the practitioners who seek to empower patients with self-care techniques like gentle touch, music, movement and art therapies. Dr. Chokshi and her staff shared touching stories about patients who benefited from the Integrative Arts in Medicine Program and Mr. Larry Higgins, a guest at the reception, spoke to the group about how the program had helped him in making an impressive recovery from serious injuries and illness. The TGH Foundation is in the middle of a mini-campaign to raise money for the trained artists and therapists who provide services Hospital Earns Highest Designation for its Senior Care Outback Bowl Players Visit Patients Tampa General Hospital is the only hospital in Hillsborough County — and one of only five in Florida — to earn exemplar status for its comprehensive care of older adults from the Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) organization. NICHE, based at NYU College of Nursing, is the leading nurse-driven program dedicated to helping hospitals improve the care of older adults. The exemplar status — the highest of four program levels — was granted after a rigorous evaluation of the current and future goals of the hospital’s NICHE program for older patients, defined as those who are 65 years old or older. The hospital has focused on encouraging nurses to become trained Geriatric Resource Nurses (GRN’s). To earn the GRN designation, nurses must complete a number of requirements, including NICHE’s online curriculum and participation in the hospital’s Geriatric Resource Nurse Committee. Nurses who earn the GRN designation have the knowledge and experience to care for older patients, said Robin Atkins, the hospital’s NICHE coordinator. They are able to identify and understand geriatric syndromes and share the most current knowledge in caring for older patients with their units’ staff, she said. Members of the Northwestern Wildcats, from left: linebacker Anthony Walker, quarterback Clayton Thorson and running back Justin Jackson talk to patient Josephine Shook during the visit. Having a NICHE program shows there is an organizational commitment to improving quality, enhancing the patient and family experience and supporting the hospital’s efforts to serve older adults, Atkins said. Program Testimonials “Integrative Medicine Therapies were able to quiet me, and once my mind could rest, my body was able to accept treatment and heal.” “The art and meditation I have learned at TGH has helped me to stay out of the hospital longer and self-manage my sickle cell pain most of the time. I am back in college and working on an engineering degree.” “The therapy was soothing, comforting, got rid of my anxiety, and relieved physical pain.” Former Patients of the TGH Integrative Arts in Medicine Program TGH is the only hospital in Hillsborough County, and one of five in the state, to earn exemplar status from the Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) organization for our comprehensive care of older adults. Members of TGH’s NICHE Steering Committee are Jaclyn Castek, left; Robin Atkins, Cherree Alicea, Horacio Figueroa, Felice Rogers Evans and Bill Gross. Shane Kaufman, 10, tosses a mini football as members of the Tennessee Volunteers and Northwestern Wildcats visit patients in TGH’s Children’s Medical Center. Transplant Teams Perform Record Number Of Surgeries Tampa General Hospital’s Transplant Program had a banner year in 2015. “Integrative Medicine offers … improvement in patients’ response to both disease and surgery … personal and spiritual strength to augment the benefit of traditional medicine.” “My son was in a better mood after visiting the Peace Room … to see him feel better made me feel better.” Family Member TGH Physician 10 To learn more about this program or to get involved, contact Craig Moran, Director of Development and Major Gifts. He can be reached at 813-844-7560 or cmoran@tgh.org. “These are significant increases for both the transplant and VAD programs, since we are among some of the largest centers in the country,” said Melissa Roberts, director of the Division of Transplant Programs. Transplant surgeons completed 434 organ transplants, resulting in a 23 percent increase in transplant patient volume compared to 2014. Increasing the number of transplants benefits the recipients who gain a new lease on life and the next patients on the waiting list because their wait will likely now be shorter, she explained. The kidney transplant team alone performed 242 transplants in 2015, the highest number since the hospital’s program launched 40 years ago. Surgeons also set another record by performing 80 Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) implants last year, which was more than a 50 percent increase in patient volume from the previous year. VADs are mechanical devices that help weakened hearts more efficiently push blood to the rest of the body. “I am incredibly proud of our teams who always come together to do whatever is needed to make these gifts of life possible,” she said. The TGH Foundation raised money to renovate two homes near the hospital, turning them into Transplant Houses for our patients and families from out of town. 11 2015 The Golden Tree of Life Orthopedic Program Recognized Among Nation’s Best — Again For the fourth consecutive year, Tampa General Hospital was named one of the nation’s “100 Hospitals With Great Orthopedic Programs” by Becker’s Hospital Review, a leading national hospital publication. Replacement, Healthgrades orthopedic awards and Magnet designation for nursing excellence. The publication noted that TGH has consistently been named by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best hospitals in the nation for orthopedics and was high performing in knee replacement in this year’s common care ratings. It also listed the hospital’s 34-bed orthopedic trauma unit and knee, hip and shoulder replacement programs that are certified by the Joint Commission, our Magnet designation for nursing excellence and our multidisciplinary approach to providing comprehensive orthopedic care. TGH is the only hospital on Florida’s west coast — and one of only five in the state — included on this year’s list. Selected hospitals received recognition for excellence from various reputable organizations in orthopedic areas like joint replacements, orthopedic surgeries and general orthopedic care. The publication’s editorial team examined several ranking and award agencies, including the U.S. News & World Report national and regional rankings for orthopedics, U.S. News’ common care ratings for hip and knee replacement, CareChex rankings for orthopedic care and major orthopedic surgery, Blue Distinction Centers for Knee and Hip In Loving Memory of “J.V.” Blackburn Forever in our hearts by Family and Friends In Appreciation of Maureen Ogden, RN, MHA for 35 years of service from Your Tampa General Hospital Family In Loving Memory of Dean Nelson In Memory of William Spellacy, M.D. by Tampa General Hospital Medical Staff Becker’s Hospital Review features business and legal news and analysis relating to hospitals and health systems and is geared toward hospital leaders.
