Wurth Emerald is the finest performing abrasive disc we have ever tested. This
amazing product is the result of a brilliant upgrade in material using film rather
than paper. Film is state of the art in disc material. It far outlasts paper and
offers maximum moisture resistance, flexibility, and ruggedness. Once we chose
film as the foundation for Wurth Emerald, we needed a high performing abrasive
to match. Heat-Treated Aluminum Oxide was the perfect choice to ensure
outstanding performance. Much like tempered steel, heat-treated Aluminum
Oxide can be more costly but the tremendous increase in performance is worth
it. Wurth Emerald is by far the best choice when only the best will do!
Emerald Discs utilize ‘Open-Grain’ design to reduce heat & ‘loading up’.

Wurth Gold Discs and 9X11 Sheets offer you a high performance disc at an
economical price. Some of our competitors cut cost by offering thin “A”
weighted discs. Wurth Gold only uses the finest latex impregnated “C” paper.
This ensures longer lasting service, superb moisture resistance and flexibility. In
addition, Wurth Gold uses Heat-Treated Aluminum Oxide as opposed to the
inferior standard Aluminum Oxide used by many others. Heat-Treated

Abrasive Definitions & Applications
Silicon Carbide: A very sharp, shaped mineral, which is harder and sharper than
Aluminum Oxide, perfect choice for cutting hard materials, such as finishes, paint, plastic
and metals.
Silicon Carbide is the preferred choice in the “Finishing Room” for sanding pre-cat
lacquers, sealers and conversion varnishes. Silicon carbide is also the “Pro’s” choice for
fine sanding applications.
Aluminum Oxide: A sharp and blocky mineral. It is tougher to break down than Silicon
Carbide. This makes it ideal for stock removal and general shop duty. As sanding takes
place, Aluminum Oxide renews its cutting edge, allowing it to remain sharp and cut
longer.
Aluminum Zirconia: Also known as “ZIRC”. It is extremely hard and tough. It requires
heavy pressure to renew the sharp edges. Designed for heavy stock removal, it typically is
applied to a heavier backing than the basic Aluminum Oxides such as “Y” or “Z” weight.
Grit: A function of the type and size of material used in an abrasive. Grit defines the
coarseness of a given abrasive. The size of the mineral is measured by a series of screens
according to the European FEPA standards.
PSA: (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) One method of adhering the coated abrasives to the
tool. Often referred to as “Peel & Stick”.
Velcro or Hook-It: Another method of adhering the coated abrasive to the work tool.
The back-up pads typically have the “Male” material attached to the face, and the
abrasives have the “Female” material attached to it. (Making a secure connection.)
Garnet: The only natural abrasive mineral still widely used for woodworking. It is blocky,
not very tough and dulls quickly. Garnet does however, produce a very good finish.
Primarily used in hand sanding applications and in sheet form.
Swirl Marks: Surface marks left from the movements of “Orbital Sanders”. Various
factors such as the type and construction of sandpaper, back-up pads, speed of the
sander, and the size of the orbital action (e.g. 3/32”, 3/16”, or 3/8”) can cause swirl
marks. The longer the orbital action, the greater the risk of swirl marks.
Pig Tails: Pulls in the surface finish - usually related to the type of abrasive used and the
DA sander. Appears as a small pit with a trailing line protruding from it.

Belt Joints (Types Used - Advantages/Disadvantages of each.)
Lap Joint: The four main classes of Belt Joints are:
Type 1 - Simple Lap Joint without grit reduction.
This is used primarily with paper belts and provides an “0”
Tolerance joint which produces a chatter free finish.
Type 2 - Lap Joint - abrasive coating removed in an overlap
area. Used primarily on flexible belts with profile sanding
applications.
Type 3 - Butt Joint - splicing tape on backside. Standard joint
for “X” and “Y” weight cloth belts. Creates a slight over
thickness which varies based on the grit of the belt and tape
thickness.
Type 4 - Butt Joint - splicing tape on abrasive side. For use in
sanding MDF materials where finish has to be chatter free.
Used only on cloth belts.
Weight (“C” Weight -“Y” Weight, etc.)
Chart below is for paper belts. “A” weight paper is the lightest material and the “H” the
heaviest. Discs may range from “F” weight all the way down to the “A” weight. Belts typically
are either “F” or “E” weight - depending on the product.

Abrasive Definitions & Applications
Interface pad. A soft, ½” thick disc pad that is applied to the DA back-up pad. The
abrasive disc the attached to the interface pad. Typically this is mated to a “Hook & Loop”
pad and disc, and is used to sand contoured shapes and edges.
Bond The substance used to adhere the grain to the backing on a coated abrasive
product. The most common type of bonding agent is urea-based adhesive. Urea is
inexpensive and brittle. Wurth Premium Abrasives only use acrylic-based adhesives, which
are much more flexible and reliable.
Disc A round, coated abrasive product, which is affixed to a rotating plate or back up pad
for portable or stationary grinding. Discs are available in 5” and 6” diameters, with or
without vacuum holes and with PSA or Velcro backing.
Finishing Room Finishing abrasives are products manufactured on “A” weight backings
normally in fine grits. They are used to hand-sand for final finish on wood, metal, ect. Try
our Wurth Silver discs and sheets in your Finishing Room.
Film Disc A sanding disc utilizing film as a backing material. Ideal for the most
demanding applications. A film disc will outlast a paper disc 9 to 1. Film is water proof
and nor affected by humidity.
Flex A manual flexing process in which the bond that holds abrasive grain to the backing
of a coated abrasive product, is “broken” in a controlled manner. Each Wurth Abrasive in
this catalog goes through a stringent flexing process before being packaged. This added
step ensures that the end product is highly flexible while maintaining superior strength.
Hand Block Sanding using a flat block or formed block when sanding with belts or sheets,
usually to finish wood work pieces. Flat hand blocks are used to polish flat stock, while
formed blocks are used to sand shaped moldings.
Orange Peel A pattern or condition on some metal and painted surfaces similar in
appearance to the pattern on the skin of an orange. It must be removed by adequate
sanding or polishing to produce a perfect finish. If you have “orange peel” issues in your
finishes Wurth Abrasives can solve your problems.
Oscillating Sander A pad type sander with a coated abrasive sheet fastened to it.
Oscillation uses short, high-speed oscillating strokes, producing fast stock removal. Try our
Wurth Silver, Gold or Emerald discs if you use oscillating sanders.

Abrasive Definitions & Applications
Random Orbital Sander Random orbital sanders utilize random action leaving very few
sanding marks on the finish. Many shops that use air powered 5” or 6” disc sanders utilize
this tool. Try our Wurth Silver, Gold or Emerald for your random orbital sander.
Sealer Coat a thin coat of finishing material designed to seal the pores and surfaces of
wood. This provides resistance to moisture and promotes adhesion to the top coat of finish.
Sealer Sanding Removing the roughness to level the surface and promote adhesion of
finish coats. Our Wurth Silver discs and sheets as well as Wurth Sponges are excellent
choices for this application.
Size Coat Second adhesive coat applied to a coated abrasive product. The “size” coat
unites with the first coat and insures anchoring of the grain and proper adhesive level to the
finished product.
Stroke Sander A large production sander that uses a hand-operated platen on a standard
sanding belt to apply pressure for large surfaces, such as table tops and doors. If you have
a stroke sander in your shop, Wurth Abrasives has custom sized belts available in a variety
of grits and backing materials. (cloth or paper)
Wash Coat A very light coat of finishing material used to add depth to the color of furniture
after staining. The solution is sprayed on and requires light scuffing. Also referred to as
“glazing”.
Waterproof Abrasive A coated abrasive which is used in wet sanding applications. If your
job calls for wet sanding, try our Wurth Emerald film discs.
Wide Belts Coated abrasive products made in belt form over 12” wide. Wurth Abrasives
can create wide belts in any length or width for your machine. Wurth wide belts are
available in paper or cloth in a variety of weights.
