Eliminate ear mites... All it takes is a few drops of Wesson corn oil in your cat's ear... Massage it in, then clean
with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates
healing.
Kills fleas instantly... Dawn dish washing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's
bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Good-bye fleas.
Rainy day cure for dog odor... Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down
the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.
Relieve headache pain almost immediately... Drink two glasses of Gatorade without the
unpleasant side effects caused by traditional "pain relievers."
Excellent salve for burns... Try Colgate toothpaste.
Clear up your stuffed nose... Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with
mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints.
Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30
minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.
Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the
bacteria.
Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer... Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the
onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly-- even though the
product was never been advertised for this use.
Skin blemishes... Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria,
keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.
Toenail fungus...Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful
antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.
Easy eyeglass protection... To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of clear nail
polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.
Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer... If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets
get in your home and you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the
ground instantly.
Smart splinter remover... Just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue
off the skin. The splinter sticks t o the dried glue.
Boils?... Cover the boil with Hunt's tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes
soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.
Balm for broken blisters... To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine. a
powerful antiseptic.
Vinegar to heal bruises... Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar
reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.
Arthritis pain relief... It's not for breakfast any more! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in
a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for
soothing relief from arthritis pain.

Our Testimonies Say It All!
GET IN SHAPE WITH TIME TO SPARE!
By Nicki Casale
are a great way to achieve and maintain
flexibility, relieve pain, improve athletic
performance or just unwind and relax.
Sessions are performed by certified therapist,
Cathleen Carlson.
Since no one has quite figured out how to
expand the number of hours in a day, we have
to find a way to get in all of our “necessities”
in 24 hours. By now, we all know that
exercise is one of those necessities. Every
day, we are pounded over and over again by
media, family, co-workers, the local gym and
even ourselves with that which we already
know: For every aspect of well-being in our
lives, regular exercise is a must. Hearing it
over and over doesn’t give us more time to
do it though. Dynamic Strength has a unique
solution designed for people who want to feel
and look healthy, but don’t have all the time
that it regularly requires to get there.
Look What Our Clients Are Saying:
I had started exercise programs at home and
at health clubs but always quit. I have now
been going to Dynamic Strength for about
a year and feel better with much more energy and fewer aches and pains. My “trick
shoulder” has almost disappeared and I have
lost about seventeen pounds of fat without
dieting at all! So, if you want to wave your
arms and legs around, pouring with sweat
for little or no result, try something else!
- Christopher S
What if you could be the picture of health in
only 40-minutes per week? Would you be
able to commit that much time to yourself
every week? At Dynamic Strength in Oak
Brook Terrace, we use an exercise approach
called Slow Motion Strength Training. Only
two 20-minute sessions per week can greatly
improve your strength, energy level, muscle
tone, bone density, cardiovascular efficiency,
metabolism, and fat loss.
Slow Motion Strength Training involves very slow, deliberate movements
monitored closely by a strength trainer. Moving the weights at this pace
eliminates the “cheating” elements of momentum and acceleration.
Your muscles are forced to do all the work, and do it more efficiently,
and you will also feel the cardiovascular workout incorporated in this
approach. In only 20 minutes, you get a full body work out! Because of
this workout’s intensity and efficiency, you only need to complete two
sessions per week to obtain maximum benefits.
Our strength trainers guide and encourage you through 5-6 exercises
which provide a thorough, total body workout. The exercises are
conducted utilizing specialized medical rehabilitation machines, set to
fit each person’s body frame to more precisely target and work that
person’s muscles. People having difficulty exercising due to previous
injuries or muscle strain can usually get great results training on this
equipment using the slow-motion method.
Dynamic Strength offers a work out experience that is very different
from the “gym” atmosphere which can be distracting and sometimes
intimidating. Our facility is private and quiet with no mirrors or music,
allowing for total concentration. The exercise room is kept very cool
with circulating air to prevent sweating, keeping you more energized
and eliminating the need for a shower or change of clothes.
Starting at the age of 25, women start to lose 2-3% of bone and muscle
mass per year. Without weight bearing exercise, we will experience
decreased muscle strength, increased body fat, fatigue, and susceptibility
to osteoporosis and other serious conditions. It’s time to give a little time
for yourself. But not all of your time!

I have joined many different health clubs and programs and failed at all of
them. I have been doing this for four weeks and have lost two pounds each
week , which I know doesn’t seem like a lot but I am so impressed with all the
inches I have lost. I have a lot more energy and I am excited!
- Colette M
"My job is very physical and since I’ve been training at Dynamic Strength I have
a ton more energy and incredible strength that makes my job easier. I also don’t
wake up with my old aches and pain anymore."

"I have never been fond of exercising, but I love this! It just takes 20
minutes, no sweat and lots of gain. It's a fun challenge!"

The workout is intense…but I always feel
completely safe with the guidance of your very
knowledgeable staff. I cannot believe the results
in such a short time. For the first time ever, I
actually have muscles! Not huge bulky muscles,
but real firm muscle tone that makes me look
and feel better. Its great knowing my workouts
are helping my bones become stronger too, since
like everyone, I want to avoid osteoporosis.

Hidden Danger in CFL Light Bulbs
Did you know the U.S. Congress passed an energy bill in 2007 banning the incandescent light bulb by the year 2014? That's
because the incandescent bulb, the one Thomas Edison helped perfect in the 1800s, has been superceded by the compact
fluorescent light (CFL) and LEDs because of their benefits to the environment.
But could the CFL really be too good to be true? Less than a month after the U.S. energy bill was passed,
research in Britain has led to the UK Environment Agency issuing guidelines about CFLs. They're calling for
evacuation of any room where an energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulb is broken, due to the release
of toxic mercury.
According to environmental impact studies, CFLs stand to save at least five million tons of carbon dioxide
emissions every year. They also are more cost-effective in the long run: CFLs are more expensive than
incandescent bulbs up front, but through longer burn times and less energy usage, they save home and business
owners money. But each CFL contains 6 to 8 milligrams of toxic mercury. Broken bulbs, where mercury could be
released into a home, and even improper disposal of the bulbs present separate environmental problems.
If a CFL bulb is broken, these suggestions are offered:
• Vacate the room for at least 15 minutes.
• The debris should be removed with rubber gloves. Do not use a vacuum, which could push toxic dust into the air.
• Put all broken glass and debris into a sealed bag and bring to a recycling center for proper disposal.
Other Impacts of CFL's
In a side note, mercury poisoning is not the only health implication from CFLs. Early studies indicate that people suffering from
certain skin ailments, such as eczema and psoriasis, could experience flare ups. There has been a link to CFLs and migraine
headaches. If you suspect your bulbs are causing health problems, see your doctor.

Solutions That Work
Connect the Dots
“Connect the dots.” “Stop, think,
and act.” “Plan how this will play
out.” These are simple phrases that
help children govern challenging
behaviors and emotions. At
LifeWork Counseling, we blend
counseling knowledge with
creativity as an ‘art’. So, simple
phrases, redefining problems,
using graphics, and developing
props as symbols, often prove to
be the cornerstone of child learning
and change.
professionals, and making use of the child’s or teens individual talents
and strengths. This is referred to as multimodal planning, a model for
providing quality care.
Children, teens, and their families
seek us for counseling with impulse control difficulties, poor attention
skills, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, substance abuse, and
esteem problems. Fortunately today, we have parents that are more
knowledgeable about their child’s mental health and the importance of
counseling.
In addition to child and family therapy, we provide marriage and
couple counseling, group counseling, vocational counseling, employee
performance enhancement, corporate workshops, team building, and
retreats. Also offered as a specialization, is the treatment of substance
abuse for adults and teens.
There seems to be an increased frequency of diagnosed disorders
whether coming from professionals, parents, or peers. For example,
the diagnosis of attention, bipolar, or autistic disorders seems quite
prevalent. The most recent shock was the report that autism symptoms
are found in 1 of 150-165 children! Yet, actual epidemiological studies
(DSM-IV) report the number of autism cases at 2-5 per 10,000. Perhaps
it is a way to explain behaviors that are difficult to amend, or there
is greater clarity in diagnosing the disorder. Subsequently, we make
special effort to provide a thorough assessment of every child.
As we use the concepts of multiple causality and multimodal planning,
evidence-based standards are applied to insure the quality of care. This
means that we use the most recent and accepted interventions that are
professionally researched and practiced. It is of great value to insure
that children, teens, and their families receive the most up-to-date and
clinically researched care. We provide counseling that is time-framed,
meaning that we estimate the number and frequency of sessions to create
change efficiently. We want children and adults to substantially improve
so well, that their talents, abilities, and self-esteem are realized.
We are your personal provider for problem solving individual and
family needs. Call us today for a tour of our facility or to schedule an
appointment.
Lifework Counseling has male and female therapists who work in
relationship, family, child and individual therapies. The best thing you
can do for yourself and your family is to deal with your own issues first
– begin with self. Call Lifework today.
Clinically, disorders of childhood are often times categorized to
help professionals understand the primary difficulty that a child may
be experiencing. For instance, ADHD, child disruptive disorder,
and impulse control disorder are classified as disorders of ‘under
control’. Anxiety, phobia, and obsessive compulsive disorders are
seen as disorders of ‘over control’. Asperger’s Disorder or Pervasive
Developmental Disorder are seen as disorders of ‘social integration’.
Depression and Bipolar Disorder are seen as disorders of ‘mood
regulation’. These classifications are important because they suggest
the causes and symptoms of the problem. This also helps us in choosing
a sound treatment approach.
Multiple causality is a term indicating that disorders have several
causes. It is human nature to seek one factor, or explanation, for
problems or disorders. For instance, with ADHD, of which there are
three types, children are frequently medicated to improve attention and
decrease hyperactivity. This single intervention suggests that ADHD
has a neurological basis. But what about other contributing factors?
Neurology is the single and most significant factor. However, problem
solving, self-appraisal, and family and social environments may be
influential as well. In counseling children and teens, we provide
education about these factors and how each must be addressed. This is
always done respectful of the child’s age and abilities.
In counseling children and adolescents we use several interventions, or
modes of treatment. To appropriately compliment individual counseling,
there should be child and family education about the problem,
family support, family therapy (as needed), social/recreational/church
activities, physician consultation (as needed), networking with school

What makes a pedicure a good pedicure?
Most people believe that a good pedicure constitutes how
well their callus is shaved down, and this couldn’t be further
from the truth. You see by shaving your callus you remove
the body’s natural defense, so therefore the body will build a
bigger defense, a bigger defense, a bigger callus, as there will
be more irritation to the area.
At Belle Raye we believe in making your skin do its job rather than putting a band-aid on it.

For the Love of Animals
Charlie … The Ghost of the Forest
The "Ghost of the Forest"
is a term to describe this
magnificant cougar in the
jungle, he hunts his prey
mainly at night, blending
into the darkness...
animal into a pet. People do attempt this…often with deadly results. It is
also terribly unfair to the animal!
By Jo (Linda) Giovannoni
Š Black Panther, 10-years-old, 120lbs.
Š Valley of the Kings (VOTK) Animal Sanctuary and
Retreat, Sharon, WI., (80-miles from Chicago)
In North America, the term panther is commonly used for the cougar
(genus Puma) while in Latin America it is most often used to mean a
jaguar. Elsewhere in the world it refers to the leopard.
Charlie didn’t ask to have his teeth and claws removed. Nor did he
ask to be treated like a prop posing with celebrities for a Hollywood
producer. “People mistakenly think removing the teeth and de-clawing
a big cat makes them safe,” said Jill Carnegie, founder of VOTK.
“They’re WRONG, very wrong! He can still pack a heavy blow capable
of breaking someone’s back. His jaw alone could inflict a lot of pain if he
felt threatened.”
Charlie’s diet is limited to ground turkey, chicken livers and a special
blend of calcium, minerals and vitamins. Charlie cannot be returned to the
wild, his means of defense and hunting are gone…he would starve or fall
prey to a predator. Native to warmer climates, Charlie’s outside enclosure
has access for entering Jill and Jim’s home. “A fenced area inside keeps
him from roaming the house and terrorizing the house cats,” Jill added
with a smile.
Charlie arrived at VOTK six years ago. Many months passed before Charlie
was comfortable around Jill and he was slow to accept her husband Jim
Tomasi. “For a long time Charlie paced back and forth,” Jill said. “When
we approached he reacted violently lunging at the fence. We gave Charlie
his space hoping he would come around but only time would tell.”
Six months passed, Charlie began to settle down and Jill began a calming
treatment. “I sat with my back to his enclosure and read a book. It did
upset him and he let me know it. I ignored him and repeated this for
months in between caring for other sanctuary animals. After he realized
I was not a threat he ignored me. Later he grew more accustomed to my
scent and started sitting closer. Eventually he curled up next to me on his
side of the enclosure. Of course, I never do this with an animal that has
claws or teeth or I probably would not be here to talk about it.”
Before we continue, we must emphasize VOTK is NOT a petting zoo nor
do they condone or promote the idea of trying to turn an exotic, wild

One day Jill did something very out of the norm—she entered Charlie’s
enclosure. “I knelt down to appear less threatening and remained still,”
Jill said. “Believe me…I had safety in mind with every move. Charlie
began ‘mouthing me,’ a method animal’s use to get to know you. When
he finished he sat next to me." A problem did occur when Jill stood up. “It
must have triggered a painful memory. Charlie flopped over on his back
and started screaming and squirming in fear as if anticipating a beating.
After much time and patience on both our parts, we now interact without
him going ballistic. He’s more content now although I’m sure he is not
thrilled living so close to his natural enemy—lions. Animals should be
allowed to live in their natural habitat. Unfortunately, mankind often cares
more about that almighty dollar then the feelings and rights of animals.
Charlie was lucky to be rescued. I often wonder how many more animals
are suffering at the hand of man.”
Charlie’s former owner used a fire extinguisher to move him from place
to place. They suspect a pole was also used because Charlie goes ballistic
if someone walks past holding a rake or shovel. “His de-clawing must
have been done by an amateur,” Jill added. “When he arrived here it was
obviously painful for him to walk!”
“Jill and I have many years of contact and training with exotics,” Jim said.
“The USDI (Department of the Interior) and the Division of Fish and Wildlife
enacted new regulations for sanctuaries, zoos, etc., prohibiting anyone without
proper training contact with exotic or dangerous animals. By definition, all
animals (two or four-footed) have similar characteristics. All animals are
‘sentient beings’, having what we commonly call "emotions". Human’s love
and hate, big cats fight for survival, and elephants weep for their dead. If any
animal does not wish to be disturbed…give it time and space and treat it with
the respect they deserve.”
Can you help rescue an animal stuck in an abusive situation? It’s simple. For
indigenous animals contact USDI, Department of Fish and Game for Exotic
Animals (tigers, panthers, etc.) contact USDA (Department of Agriculture)
for domestic animals (dogs, cats, etc.) or your local county office.

Automotive
Gas-Saving Tips from the Pros
Conserving gasoline is easier than you think. Given today's high prices and concerns for the environment, what are you waiting for? Here's timetested advice from the experts at the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) on ways to use less gasoline.
• Check tire pressure. Under-inflated tires and poorly aligned wheels waste fuel by forcing the engine to work harder.
• Consolidate your daily trips and errands.
• Avoid excessive engine idling. Shut off your vehicle while waiting for friends and family.
• Observe speed limits. Speeding decreases your miles per gallon.
• Drive gently. Sudden accelerations guzzle gas. Anticipate traffic patterns ahead and adjust your speed gradually.
• Remove clutter and unused items. Less weight means better mileage.
• Keep your engine operating at its peak efficiency. A misfiring spark plug or clogged filters cut into gas mileage.
• Follow the service schedules listed in your owner's manual and have the work performed by qualified technicians.
The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence was founded to improve the quality of automotive service and repair through the
voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians. ASE-certified technicians wear blue and white ASE insignia and carry credentials
listing their area(s) of certification. Their employers often display the blue and white ASE sign. Visit www.ase.com for more car care tips.

When You Look in the Mirror
What Do You Want to See?
We can help you get the smile that you want! We don't have a
magic mirror, we just do great dentistry!
Today's cosmetic dentistry can give you that smile in less time, less cost and
less trauma. Television has many programs on makeovers for the face, the body
and even the home. Educational programs on the latest dental procedures are
aired all of the time; some on the evening news, others as special programs.
You probably have seen what can be done but don't relaize how easy and
inexpensive the transformation can be.
If you have yellow or stained teeth, a simple whitening procedure, with a touch
up at home will keep your teeth sparkling white. If you have a space between
your teeth, veneers or orthodontics can be done to close the space. Veneers can
be done in one to three appointments. If orthodontics is best for you, you do not have to worry about wires and brackets, your teeth can
be straightened in months and even your best friends will not know with your clear appliance.
If no major dental work needs to be done, then the assurance that a team of experts is looking after you and your family can be found at
University Dental Associates.
Worried about the cost? Today's new technology has made dentistry more affordable. We offer no interest and extended payment plans,
through CareCredit, accept most dental insurance plans, and accept credit cards.
Call us today if you have dental work that you have been waiting for the right time. We are offering a FREE CONSULTATION to new
patients, through May 15, 2008.
Why University Dental Associates:
Serving all of Chicagoland with five locations, University Dental Associates offers the comprehensive dental care that you’ve been searching
for. Instead of making multiple trips to several offices for different consults, University Dental Associates offers specialists who work together
for a comprehensive approach towards treatment planning.
University Dental Associates offers a modern facility in which our general dentists attend to all routine and cosmetic needs. They provide
tooth-colored fillings, teeth whitening, cosmetic veneers, crowns, and bridges. Our specialists perform root canals, extractions, implants,
as well as periodontal and oral surgery.
JosephToljanic, D.D.S., the section chief at the University of Chicago Hospitals, is a board-certified prosthodontist who specializes in implant
restorations for missing teeth. For thousands of people, missing teeth
can result in problems with eating, speaking, or being able to smile with
confidence. Dental implants represent one of the best solutions available
to give you back your missing teeth.
Staffed by experts in more than eight different dental specialties, University
Dental Associates can care for all of your dental needs in a single
location. We have offices in Chicago, Hoffman Estates, Homewood, and
Westmont. To make an appointment or to find an exact location, please

One of the first things
people notice is your smile!
If chipped, stained, or crooked teeth are "hiding" the real you, it's
time for a smile make over.
A beautiful smile can brighten your life every day, professionally
and socially. And unlike plastic surgery, cosmetic dentistry isn't a
major operation. Imagine coming in for a single appointment or
two and emerging with the smile you've always wanted...no
pain, no strain, and no time taken away from your busy life. The
results are immediate and dramatic.
For over 30 years Doctors Beri and Drab have taken great pride in
their practice and staff. They focus on continuing their education
and offer new technology to afford their patients with the latest
techniques in oral health care and virtually painless care.
Wheaton Cosmetic Dentistry proudly offers a wide array of dental
services, from mercury-free, tooth-colored fillings to full mouth
reconstructions. We believe that every patient deserves the
highest quality of dentistry available.
Your time is valuable…and that is why we have invested in
Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics
(CEREC), technology that uses CAD/CAM (computer-aided
design/computer-aided manufacturing) to restore teeth to their
normal form and function in only one visit.
Computer enhanced digital x-rays use up to 90 percent less
radiation than traditional x-rays and they develop in an instant, so
you’ll spend less time waiting. In addition, a pen sized intraoral
camera can take photos of your teeth and gums. This allows the
doctors to increase the accuracy levels of patient diagnoses and
helps to vusually educate patients. We want you to have a smile
you are proud of.

experienced hygienists.
If it is implants you need, Dr. Beri and Drab have restored

identifies where to place an implant prior to surgery to achieve
optimal final results.
Our dentistry is AFFORDABLE! We have many options which
will fit your pocketbook. We offer no interest and extended
payment plans, with no up-front costs, no pre-payment penalties
and no hidden fees.

Our practice also does general family dentistry. We believe that
your family deserves the best, so we provide the highest quality
materials, technology and service. Wheaton Cosmetic Dentistry
believes that the mouth is the gateway to the body, and a healthy
mouth is an integral component to an individual’s overall
health.
We proudly use Diagnodent…a device that represents the latest
technology in the early detection of cavities. It identifies tooth
