Wonderlic Advanced Skills Test - Non-Proctored Is he college ready? Is she ready to start an advanced degree program? What level class should he be placed in? Description Accurate Placement Go beyond basic skills! Based on the Occupational Information Network (O*NET) and Common Core State Standards, the new Wonderlic Advanced Skills Test measures the language and mathematics skills needed to enter two- or four-year college programs. Non-proctored, online administration allows for fast, easy and accurate evaluation of incoming students 24/7 from anywhere in the world. Placement of incoming students is now easier than ever! Whether you currently use an admissions test or offer open enrollment, an online advanced skills test is the ideal way to assess the language and mathematics capabilities of all applicants. No more discovering skills gaps after they’ve enrolled! Ideal for colleges with online classes, schools with ESL students, and institutions offering Associates and Bachelor degree programs. Scoring Scoring recommendations are based on your curriculum and the needs of the career, and they can be adjusted to meet the exact demands of your programs. Fast and Easy for Everyone Applicants can take the two 30-minute assessments 24/7 from any computer with online access, without the need for a proctor. The easy to read report compares the test taker’s scores with the skill level required and provides an at-a-glance performance category (Below College-Ready, College-Ready or Bachelor’s Degree-Equivalent). Detailed diagnostics help you understand what classes they are ready for and exactly what remedial training is needed, if any. There are two subtests in the WAST: The Test of Mathematics Skills (50 multiple-choice questions) and the Test of English Skills (55 multiple-choice questions). A complete administration consists of one Mathematics and one English form. Each subtest requires approximately 5 minutes for instructions and practice questions and then 30 minutes for testing time for a total of 35 minutes administration time. Both tests can be administered in 1 hour and 10 minutes. Table 1 presents a list of the various mathematics and English skills that are measured by the WAST. Table 1. Mathematics and English Skills that are Assessed on the WAST Mathematics Skills English Skills Numbers/operations/inequalities/order of operations Grammar Fractions Vocabulary Data analysis and statistics Sentence construction Measurement/geometry/trigonometry Information Retrieval Algebra Reading Comprehension and Interpretation Benefits The WAST is a self-administered, unproctored, online assessment. It is useful in distance learning and other settings where the test taker is not readily able to test in a proctored environment. In addition, the WAST can serve as a precursor to proctored assessments. Grade Level As depicted in Table 2 below, the WAST assesses a broader range of skill levels and test content than commonly used college entry tests – based upon Common Core Standard levels from 5th grade into the sophomore year in high school. Importantly, these Common Core Standards indicate when content is taught, and not when content is mastered or expressed by adults. For example, although Algebra is taught in 7th grade, it might not be mastered until 9th grade – much later. Lastly, the average difficulty level of WAST questions is the first half of 7th grade. Why Switch to the WBST? Personal Attention: Client training and support includes advice regarding setting appropriate scoring levels, scoring interpretation and retesting recommendations. Results with Real World Application: Includes program- and job-specific scoring with real-time individual and group results. Valid, Reliable Scoring: ED-approved ATB tests are in English and Spanish languages. Administration Options: Available in online and paper test administrations. Short Test Administration Time (about 40 minutes): The WBST supports quicker and more effective decisionmaking that benefits your test center staff and students. In addition, the standardized, consistent format of 95 questions helps you avoid the time and confusion associated with having to compare, contrast and pilot multiple assessment packages before making your final decision. Ongoing Support: The WBST allows your institution to include the robust data and valuable predictive analytics provided by the test in your long term effectiveness planning and reporting. How the WBST Stands Out Accurate Results The WBST has been reviewed and approved by the U.S. Department of Education has an approved ATB test since it was initially submitted in 2007. Online and Spanish versions of the WBST were approved in 2015. Ease of Administration The goal of the WBST is to provide valid results with minimal test administrator training time. We accomplished this goal by automating all aspects of test instruction, administration, scoring, reporting and interpretation. Speed of Administration The WBST can be administered in less than half of the time of comparable alternatives (40 minutes). Expert Support and Proven Scoring Ranges Wonderlic’s team of assessment experts and experienced post-secondary education professionals are available to assist with establishing general admissions and/or program-specific scoring ranges. Thousands of educational institutions nationwide have adopted our general admissions and programspecific scoring recommendations. Comprehensive Student Record Management System The WBST scores are automatically uploaded to our online management portal with sort, filter and group reporting options and an application program interface (API) that simplifies integration with other software service providers and platforms. © 2015 Wonderlic, Inc. www.wonderlic.com How the WBST Stacks Up WBST Administration Formats Any computer with Internet connection, including offcampus. Please note that the inclusion of the WAST in your course placement solution will increase the number of items and will increase the amount of time for the test. The task force identified an important discussion point regarding interpretation of test content. It was pointed out that there are a relatively small number of items that measure Algebra (or any topic) and that placement based on these questions may lack accuracy. It is true that reliability and accuracy increase with the number of items in a test – up until the point in which an examinee loses focus due to test fatigue. The WBST has been designed and statistically demonstrated to be a highly reliable and accurate measure of math and language skills when using the respective Total Scores. Correlations of the WBST Total Scores to other longer measures of basic skills are indicative of high reliability and accuracy. The following table provides correlations obtained in a recent pilot study with a similar community college system. Here, the math section of the WBST (the WBST-Q) is a significant predictor of ACT math and Compass Pre-Algebra – in fact, it is a better predictor of the two College Board Exams than they are to each other: Basic skills are generally taught in sequence and learning occurs by building knowledge upon previous knowledge. As a result, it is possible to predict and understand one specific subtopic of skills by observing performance on related subtopics. The following table presents the intercorrelations between the subtopics of the WBST-Q and overall Quantitative/Math Score. Each subtopic is significantly correlated to each other and the overall. For example, performance on Geometry and Data Interpretation items are highly predictive of performance on algebra items (.59 and .58 respectively). Further, the Overall Quantitative has extremely high correlations. This analysis suggests that math skills are acquired as a continuum rather than independent components. 2 In summary response to the concern about the algebra items, our recommendation is not to use the algebra items as the sole determination for course placement. While subtopic scores are provided to provide diagnostic information and to support remediation, course placement should be based on overall scores that include each of the subtopics. The overall scores are highly reliable and the best indicators of a student’s need for remediation. 3 Wonderlic Online Technical & Browser Requirements User Experience Client Proctoring Online Assessments Test Taker Requirements These requirements apply to users accessing Wonderlic Online to view their candidate information, results and reports, as well as to any client machine used to administer a proctored Wonderlic assessment.
