You can see three of face its faces . But there are three more faces that you can’t see . Every face rectangular prism has face six flat faces . base Ruben and his friends are learning about solid figures all around them . Solids All Around • Grade 2 3 base 4 The faces at the top and bottom of this prism are called bases . Both bases are the same size and shape . The bases are also opposite each other . edge An edge is where two faces meet . A rectangular prism has twelve edges . How many can you see? Hardware Store vertex Issac looks for rectangular prisms in the hardware store . He knows they have: A vertex is where a base and two faces meet . The word vertices is plural for vertex . • six faces • two bases that are opposite each other A rectangular prism has eight vertices . How many can you see? Solids All Around • Grade 2 • twelve edges • eight vertices 5 6 Cubes How many rectangular prisms do you see? Solids All Around • Grade 2 A cube is another type of solid that is also a rectangular prism . It has six faces, eight vertices, and twelve edges . 7 8 Toy Store rectangular prism cube square face square face square face Tanya looks for cubes in the toy store . She knows they have: Look at the orange face on the cube . It is a square . The blue and yellow faces are also squares . All six faces are squares with equal edges all around . Solids All Around • Grade 2 • six square faces • eight vertices • twelve equal edges 9 10 Spheres How many cubes can you see? This solid is a sphere . It has no flat faces, edges, or vertices . Solids All Around • Grade 2 11 12 Sports Shop curved surface Leara looks for spheres in the sports shop . She knows they have: • no faces, edges, or vertices A sphere has a curved surface and nothing else . All points on a sphere’s curved surface are the same distance from the center . Solids All Around • Grade 2 • a curved surface • surfaces on which all points are the same distance from the center 13 14 Cylinders How many spheres can you see? This solid is a cylinder . It has two faces . The faces are circles . No matter how hard you look, you will not find a single vertex on a cylinder . Cylinders also have curved surfaces . circular face curved surface Solids All Around • Grade 2 15 16 House and Neighborhood Cones Ruben and Megan look for cylinders and cones around their house and neighborhood . This solid is a cone . A cone has only one face that is a circle . They know cylinders have: • two faces shaped like a circle • no vertices • curved surfaces circular face They know cones have: • one face shaped like a circle Solids All Around • Grade 2 17 18 Square Pyramids How many cylinders and cones do you see? Solids All Around • Grade 2 This solid is a square pyramid . It has four faces that are shaped like triangles . They are connected by four edges . It also has a face that is shaped like a square . There is one vertex on top of a square pyramid . 19 20 Around the World When a square pyramid is turned over, you can see four more vertices on the bottom . There are five vertices in all, including the one on top . It is a square pyramid because the face on the base is square . edge squ f a c a re e vertices vertices top vertex There are four more edges that connect the triangular faces to the base . Square pyramids have eight edges in all . edge Here’s an amazing group of square pyramids! You would have to go to Giza, in Egypt, to find them . tri an g fa u l a ce r Solids All Around • Grade 2 u la r t r ia n g fa ce 21 22 Draw lines to match each shape to its name . rectangular prism cylinder cone square pyramid sphere Solids really are all around . Ruben and his friends saw them in their neighborhood and across the world . Where can you find solids around you? Solids All Around • Grade 2 23 cube 24
