to win the Big Game on a five-lateral kickoff return.
• Five members of NMSU’s coaching staff are Nebraska graduates:
head coach Tony Samuel (1979), assistant head coach/offensive
coordinator Barney Cotton (1983), QB coach Gerry Gdowski (1990),
DL coach Rich Glover (1973) and WR coach Mark Mauer (1982).
• NMSU has ranked in the Top 25 in the nation in rushing offense for

WASHINGTON STATE – CAL
NOTES
• Cal leads the all-time series, 36-24-5, but WSU has won five of the
past six meetings.
• The last time Cal and WSU met in Memorial Stadium in 2000, the
Bears took a 17-14 lead midway through the third quarter on Mark
Jensen's 20-yard field goal. However, the Cougars took advantage of
a blocked punt and Jason Gesser's 10-yard TD pass provided the
difference in a 21-17 WSU victory.
• Last year, Cal allowed a school-record 513 passing yards in a 5120 loss in Pullman.

USC – CAL
NOTES
• Cal has won three consecutive games over USC in Los Angeles: 2215 in 1996, 32-31 in '98 and 28-16 in 2000. The last time Cal had a
better streak was from 1912-23 when the Bears were 7-0-2 against
the Trojans in Southern California. The first two games, a win and a
tie, were rugby and not football and do not count in official records.
• In the 2000 win, Cal outscored USC, 14-0, in the second half.
Jemeel Powell sealed the victory with an 83-yard punt return for a
touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Powell finished the night with
four returns for 138 yards and added an interception on defense.

ARIZONA STATE - CAL
NOTES
• After not playing each other in 2001, Cal and Arizona State resume
their rivalry this season. The only other missed years in the series,
which began in 1976, came in 1977, 1988 and 1989.
• Cal has lost its past five games in Tempe, last winning in 1990. The
Bears built a 31-3 lead in the third quarter, then had to hold on for a
31-24 victory.
• In the 2000 game, Cal tailback Joe Igber rushed for 181 on just 15
carries. With the effort, he joined Paul Jones and Russell White as the
only Bears to rush for at least 180 yards twice in a career. Igber also
ran for 182 vs. Washington in 1999.

ARIZONA – CAL
NOTES
• Before last season's 38-24 Arizona victory, the previous 12 games
in the series had been decided by 7 points or less.
• Cal hasn't visited Tucson since 1997 when Arizona prevailed in
double OT, 41-38. In 1996, Cal and UA hooked up in the longest
game in school history, a four-overtime affair that ended in fading
daylight with the Bears ahead, 56-55. Cal QB Pat Barnes threw for
503 yards and 8 touchdowns in the marathon contest.
