Workshops #2 K A S
Mary Peterson, CTC, ABLE to Travel, a program of United Spinal
Association
Nick Scott, President and Founder, Wheelchair Athletics
Foundation; Abilities Expo National Ambassador
Does the perceived challenge of planning accessible travel
keep you from going places? It may not be easy, but it does
not need to be that hard. ABLE to Travel, an agency that
specializes in the types of issues a person with a disability
may encounter, is here to help make your trip accessible
from start to finish and alleviate the headache for you! In this
workshop the presenter will discuss the Air Carrier Access,
the 2010 ADA Standards that have mandated increased
accessibility to hotels and other travel destinations, tips for
travelers, maneuvering through airport security and the
mandates from TSA, and cruises (one of the most accessible
ways to travel). Learn more at www.abletotravel.org.
Nick Scott is a paraplegic who went from being overweight
and discouraged to becoming a professional bodybuilder, a
wheelchair ballroom dancer and a personal trainer. Discover
at this session how you too can gain the skills to improve
your fitness and overall wellbeing. There is no one nutrition
or exercise regimen that is exactly right for everyone. We all
start with different abilities, limitations and capabilities. Nick
will discuss the process of adapting exercises to meet your
unique situation. You'll also learn about mindset, stretching,
setting goals, the importance of rest, food choices, and
developing your self-motivation. Learn more at

2:30pm – 3:30pm Clinical Trials: How to Find Them,
What You Need To Know – Workshop #1 A S
Jennifer French, MBA, Executive Director Neurotech Network, 2012
Paralympic Silver Medalist and Rolex Yachtwoman of the Year
In 1999 Jennifer French, a C6/7 quadriplegic, received a
functional electric stimulation system as part of a clinical trial.
The system, which includes implants directly on her muscles,
allows her to stand many times each day and helped her
"walk" down the aisle at her wedding with the aid of a walker.
Clinical trials can offer great possibilities for people with
disabilities. There are many different types, focusing on
everything from the simple to the complex, including short
surveys, pharmaceutical trials, and complex surgeries. Jen
joins us to discuss the experiences of trial participants,
including her own. She will highlight the need-to-know issues
and discuss the many considerations to review before joining
a clinical trial. Get the tools to help you in the decision-making
process and the resources to learn about clinical trials. Learn
more at www.neurotechnetwork.org.
** Buy the book! Jennifer is the author of the recently published
book, "On My Feet Again." An author book signing follows her
workshop from 3:30pm to 4:30pm at her workshop space.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

11:45am – 12:45pm An Educational Approach Using
Horse Boy Method: No Horses Required – Workshop #1
Joell Dunlap, Executive Director, Square Peg Ranch, a
HorseBoy™ Center
K
A S
Discover how this method, designed primarily for children
with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) but with benefits for
nearly everyone, offers options to families for whom
traditional classroom learning is proving to be ineffective.
Joell Dunlap will discuss the child-led approach to teaching
everything from language to science using the environment,
movement and most of all - fun. Learn how you can create a
"yes" (rather than a "no") environment for children with
sensory and ASD. Breakthrough principles such as
"communication not compliance" and "start where the child
is, not where you wish him to be" will also be illustrated. The
method offers parents choices and success for children who
find disappointment and "failure" in other approaches. It
gives permission to choose alternate ways of education and
brings fun and enjoyment back to learning and parenting.

Child's Seating Needs – Workshop #1 K A S
Lee Johnson, Manager Planning, Production and Control, Kids
UP by Quantum
The world of seating and positioning is full of "clinical"
language and concepts that can be difficult. This session is
designed to help bring clarity through a fast-paced hour of
real-time, rubber-meets-the-road information and training
for you, the front line players caring for a person with
mobility challenges. Bridging the gap between the
intentions of clinicians and the day-to-day challenges faced
by caregivers, this workshop will bring you a new
perspective and practical tools to help achieve both comfort
and therapeutic outcomes. Learn the basics of how the
body actually "sits" properly, the most common
"positioning" enemies of healthy sitting, strategies and
creative ways to address specific challenges. You will leave

The Luggie Scooter really offers some innovative design
features that are especially fortuitous for people who are
often on the road. This scooter is designed to fold and
unfold quickly, with a minimum amount of fuss and
bother. It is small enough to get into the trunks of most
cars without any sort of expensive lift helping it along.
The Luggie does well outdoors. It's a four wheel scooter
that goes up to 11 miles before it needs a new charge.
