This means they are fully trained, certified, and often experienced in the position they teach. Our faculty consistently has a high percentage of advanced degrees, and we do a good job of retaining some of the top staff in the state and the nation. Life events, such as retirement, childbirth, or illness, sometimes cause a need for a long-term substitute teacher. When this happens we always make every effort to hire a highly qualified substitute. All are certified teachers and most are licensed in the area in which they are substituting. In rare cases it may be impossible to find a teacher with a particular certification, such as special education. This may result in the district asking the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for an emergency license for such a teacher. If you ever have any questions about the certification of any of our staff, please call me at 789-7900. Mr. Fleig 3 CHOIR NEWS Robed Choir, Upper Women’s Choir, and GCS all participated in the Onalaska Concert and Show Choir Competition the weekend of January 17-18. This is the highest ranking a scout can advance to and very few scouts make it that far. Reed’s project was at Hillview Cemetery in La Crosse where he cleaned up and identified gravestones and built a kiosk to display a map of the cemetery along with building birdhouses and painting the fence around the cemetery. Sam’s project was in Trempealeau Mountain State Park where he did trail improvements and built a bridge on the trail. Congratulations to both Sam and Reed! 4 HOST FAMILIES NEEDED!! COURSE REGISTRATION FOR 2015-2016 Course registration will be upon us in early February. Students will be bringing a registration form home for you to sign. It’s important that you help your student select appropriate courses. Keep in mind that students should sign up for 6-7 credits. Students may need to take specific courses to meet 4-year college or technical college program requirements. During registration time, it’s important for students to consider and plan for school-to-work opportunities that are available. Most of these opportunities are by application and have specific deadlines. Programs are in Banking and Finance, CISCO Networking Academy, Assistant Child Care Teacher, Certified Nursing Assistant, Cooperative Education, Health Science Academy, Engineering Academy and Construction Academy. Please consult the course guide for course information, school-to-work opportunities, graduation requirements, and college requirements. Course guides will be available online and in Student Services. Are you a World Language Student who is interested in hosting a student from Germany? Be a part of the 2015 German Exchange! Students from our partner school in Kirchheim unter Teck, Germany, will come for three weeks in October, 2015. We need CHS families with students in World Languages to host! This is a great opportunity to fulfill a Global Certificate requirement and to make a new connection. This year is the 25th Anniversary of this partnership. Be part of the tradition! Anyone interested should stop by Frau Bauer’s room 228 for an application or e-mail her at sbauer@lacrosseschools.org. NHS NEWS The National Honor Society has already been very active this year, thanks to the hard work and dedication of both our second year members and our huge group of enthusiastic new members. So far we have held three sanctioined events—a parade route clean-up last fall, a very successful blood drive in the winter, and a food drive just before winter break. This new semester looks to be as active as the first, with another blood drive and another food drive already in the works. In addition to these events, NHS members have spent and will continue to spend hundreds of hours in service all throughout the community. Thanks for all your hard work members, and keep it up! ~Jessica Halter, Public Relations Officer 5 Congratulations to the following “Students of the Month”. See your counselor to sign up for a time to meet with Mr. Fish. 7 FRESHMAN PLANNING CONFERENCE Freshman Planning Conferences will begin February 9, 2015. These conferences which involve counselors, parents and their freshman students, are specially designed to focus on the student’s talents and interests, discuss his or her educational and career development, and provide useful information to assist in planning for the future. They are not intended to replace Parent/Teacher Conferences nor are they a time to discuss discipline issues. Conferences generally last 45 minutes and take place various times throughout the day. Letters will soon be arriving at your homes telling you when your conference has been scheduled. If you are unable to attend at that time, please contact the Student Services secretary, Mrs. Silha at 789-3006 or at dsilha@lacrosseschools.org and she will help you reschedule. All conferences take place in Student Services. We are looking forward to meeting with you and your freshman! UW SYSTEM REGIONAL PLACEMENT TESTING Registration for the Regional Placement Testing for students entering UW System campuses for the fall semester 2015 begins in early February, 2015. This testing helps the universities determine the correct levels of math and English courses a student should take. To register for the Regional Testing go to www.testing.wisc.edu. You will see which sites are open and get immediate confirmation that can be printed. No confirmation letters will be mailed to you so be sure to print or write down the confirmation information when you register. FAFSA—FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID Seniors who plan on attending college in the fall need to complete the FAFSA in order to qualify for financial aid such as student loans, student grants, and work-study. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.gov after January 1st. Check with the schools you’re interested in for their FAFSA deadlines. Students and parents will need to have their 2014 taxes completed in order to finish the form. If you have questions about the FAFSA contact the financial aid office at the school to which you have applied. 8 Engineering, STEM, & Project Lead The Way Our Technology and Engineering Department is entering its ninth year of being a part of Project Lead the Way. PLTW is a national program forming partnerships among public schools, higher education institutions and the private sector to increase the quantity and quality of engineers and engineering technologists graduating from our high school. PLTW has developed a four year sequence of courses which, when combined with college preparatory mathematics and science courses in high school, introduces students to the scope, rigor, and discipline of engineering and engineering technology prior to entering college. The year long courses we teach at Central are: Introduction to Engineering Design: This course teaches problem-solving skills using a design development process. Models of product solutions are created, analyzed, and communicated using solid modeling computer design software. Principles of Engineering: This course helps students understand the field of engineering and engineering technology. Students explore various technology systems and manufacturing processes which help students learn how engineers and technicians use math, science and technology in an engineering problem solving process to benefit people. The course also includes concerns about social and political consequences of technological change. Digital Electronics: This is a course of applied logic that encompasses the application of electronic circuits and devices. Computer simulation software is used to design and test digital circuitry prior to the actual construction of circuits and devices. Computer Integrated Manufacturing: This course enhances computer modeling skills. Students apply principals of robotics and automation to create models of their three-dimensional designs. Students will be utilizing CNC machines to create productions from their own designs. 9 10 College Financing 101 It can be challenging trying to figure out how to pay for college. The ever-increasing cost of education has fueled the growth of student loans. Here a few tips to help guide you and your student through the process. If your student is a senior, you will need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as you have completed your Federal Income Tax return. The most convenient way to complete the FAFSA is online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The colleges your student has applied to will review the information on the FAFSA to determine eligibility for a Stafford Loan and other financial aid sources. Schools generally send out award letters in early April. To see an estimate of your financial aid eligibility, log on to www.FAFSA4caster.ed.gov. If you find the award amount isn’t going to be enough, don’t panic! There are other options for help, including hundreds of scholarships. Check with Central’s Future Center or visit reputable websites such as www.finaid.org or www.fastweb.org. Many students help pay for their own education with summer and part-time employment. Your student may be able to cover some expenses through the Federal Work-Study program. This program provides part-time jobs to students, often right on campus, based on financial need. As a parent, you can apply for a Federal PLUS loan to help bridge the gap. Each school has its own process for PLUS loans, so you should contact the school’s financial aid office for information. Parents and students should also talk to their financial institutions to see if they offer alternative student loans or to explore other loan options. As education costs continue to surge, and traditional funding sources fall short, finding alternative financing solutions will be critically important. Don’t let your student put off going to college because they think they can’t afford it. Help is out there - they may just need to do a little work to find it. When Financial Aid isn’t enough, Altra is there to help with student loans through Student Choice. For more information, anyone can visit Altra Federal Credit Union’s Student area at www.altra.org. Click on the Your Life button and select Students. 11 La Crosse County Permanent Medication Drop Boxes: *PILLS AND PATCHES ONLY!
