From the Illustrations to 100 poems by 100 poet: Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, poet, 600-‐739 CE Fisherman drag a net upstream Katsushika Hokusai Ukiyo-‐e print 1835 or 1836 Erich Lessing Culture and Fine Arts Archives -‐The composition seems to go right to left, the smoke going left, hills positioned on the left side, people hauling the net to the left -‐Saturated colors -‐Some smooth gradation, which gives the picture a bit more variation from the contained shading -‐Different shades in order to show depth, however it still feels 2D -‐Perhaps because the background hills don’t have a different shade to contrast it from the foreground. -‐Fine black lines outlining the picture -‐Some parts of the hill seems to have the style for water -‐The picture is depicting fishermen hunting for fish by casting a net downstream
