NATIONAL POOL INDUSTRY RESEARCH CENTER
COMPLETED! NEW PROTOCOL BEGUN...
San Luis Obispo, CA – With overwhelming support from
industry members over the last two and a half months, the
NPC – Cal Poly National Pool Industry Research Center
is a REALITY! Twelve test pools (two equipped with
vanishing edges), two overflow spas, and two stand alone
spas are now complete on the campus of the California
Polytechnic State University, College of Environmental and
Civil Engineering. Under the watchful eye of the research
team, the pools were prepared and plastered for Protocol #2
which continues to narrow the search for answers and
solutions to etching deterioration in pool surfaces. With
participation from IPSSA, NSPI National, and UPA, the
research center is a collaborative effort in the industry which
will help its members for years to come. The program is
funded through the National Plasterers Research
Foundation with research being conducted by a very
reputable research team. Major thanks and recognition goes
to Alan Smith of Alan Smith Pool Plastering who
coordinated the effort as NPC Research Chair. “Even after
being diagnosed with a very serious type of cancer, Alan
forged ahead with his integrity and passion to find solutions
to problems everyone faces regarding pool surfaces” stated
Mitch Brooks, NPC Executive Director.
“History will show that this center and the current and future
research conducted by Cal Poly made a major impact in the
swimming pool industry!”
Fund raising to support the Center and every research protocol
is required every year. The NPC Research program relies on these
contributions to be able to provide this high level of professional
and honest research. Anyone can give. For more information go to

WE ARE NOT STUPID!
By Mitch Brooks, NPC Executive Director
Greetings from the Plywood State! I want to start by thanking everyone for their well wishes and
calls of concern after Hurricane Charley hit our harbor community. The NPC Staff and our families
are safe and it’s all a matter of time before we get things back to normal. We do ask you to continue
to be patient. Our power, telephones and internet go down from time to time AND we are about two
weeks behind in our work. But we will do our best to get caught up and on schedule.
After reading this newsletter you should be proud of our accomplishments in such a short time.
There should be a lot of pride in every NPC Member with our new Research Center and new programs.
For up to date information, visit our website at www.npconline.org. With limited space and time, I
want to take this opportunity in this newsletter to talk about the upcoming election in November.
This is strictly my opinion, my personal opinion. I believe this is one of the most important elections
in our lifetime.
When I vote, I am looking for the best person to do the job they are elected to do. It’s sort of like hiring an employee. I base that upon
their experience, their record of accomplishments, and what they say they can accomplish and how it will affect me. Taking all of this
into account - I then decide if what is being promised and stated, is believable.
First and foremost, the American people are not stupid. As a business owner, if your taxes increase, do you take a pay cut? No,
more than likely your prices will increase. So instead of paying more taxes, consumers, including yourself, will pay higher prices. I
personally support tax cuts and shame on business owners who vote for tax increases. As far as health care, we had the opportunity
for a federal law allowing us to get our own group plan for NPC members, but it was blocked by Democrats in the Senate. Universal
health care for all is years away – the country is divided on the issue…so why is a candidate promising it? As far as the war in Iraq
and terrorism, it was about time and it needed to happen. We have never fought this kind of war before now. We are in a learning phase
and lives are being lost for a cause no different than in the American Revolution. We need to find them and wipe them out before they
attack on our soil again. It will take time and we Americans tend to be impatient.
History will show that the entire world will be a better place because of this war…and
America will be more secure. I haven’t seen another attack on US soil since 9/11 –
have you? After everything we’ve been through, I think our economy is stable and
getting better. The current Administration inherited an economy heading for the
dump. It’s a fact that there is not much a President can do to affect the economy short
term. But this one was able to stimulate the ecomony and recover from what he inherited!
As they say, the way to win elections is to get a group of nice people together and find
out all their troubles and blame them on the other candidate. It is my feeling that the
name calling and blame game has gone way too far from one side of the aisle to the
extent of despiration and stupidity. Since when does the Federal Government decide
when to build Fire Houses? I’ve come to the conclusion that after the recent DocuGate with CBS and the absolute disrespect of the Prime Minister of Iraq who came
to the USA to thank us…I think it proves through their own words that one of the
Candidate will do or say anything to get elected. That’s no one we can afford to
have in the White House! Lastly, I have heard there is a candidate for Vice President
who is a trial lawyer and way UNDER QUALIFIED to be President and has been
associated with law suits against the pool industry! Some thoughts to ponder…all I
ask is that you VOTE on November 2nd. And GOD BLESS the United States of
America.

Survives Hurricane Charley
There are times in our lives when you live through an
event that defines for you the importance of human life.
When Hurricane Charley made the sudden turn and hit
Port Charlotte, Florida, your NPC staff had one of those
moments. We were very lucky and all of our friends and
family are safe and physically unharmed. Although our
office plaza had extensive damage, our offices were spared
major damage. We were without power and internet
access, we did our best to keep things moving for the
association with our limitations. We thank everyone for
their concern and their patience as we put our lives
together.
Many of you have expressed a way to help financially.
We all have insurance and only time will help with our
situations. HOWEVER, our local Boys & Girls Clubs
have suffered major losses, losing two of their three
locations where they provide a positive place for kids when
they are not in school, specifically those from
disadvantaged backgrounds. Literally 100’s of young
people are displaced and have no place to go. In addition,
fundraising efforts have been stalled and normal income
usually received this time of the year is going to hurricane
recovery efforts. It costs around $500 annually per child
to run the program. If you are so inclined to help our
community, we suggest you give to the Boys & Girls Club.
A special fund has been set up for this purpose.
Please send your contribution to:

From time to time there are
extraordinary individuals
who go above and beyond
the call of duty to support
what they believe in.
Instead of just talking about
it, they do something about
it. Prior to any work with Cal Poly,
Burkett’s Pool Plastering was chosen as
the bid winner to renovate Cal Poly’s
Olympic size swimming pool. This spring,
Rob Burkett approached the NPC and
asked for a trade. Help him refinish the
pool and he’ll donate the proceeds to the
NPC Research Fund. The rest is history.
At the recent NPC Board of Directors
meeting in Morro Bay, Rob presented
$90,000 to the NPC. The Board then
made the decision to use this money to start
a Research Endowment Fund with the
intention of only using the interest from
this money, not the principle. As the total
amount of contributions to the Research
Fund increase, the surplus annually will
be placed in the endowment fund. The
endowment fund goal is $3 million which
should generate enough money for annual
protocols at NPC – Cal Poly National
Pool Industry Research Center. Thank
You to Rob and everyone at Burkett’s
Pool Plastering for your dedication and
commitment to this project. If any
plasterer is interested in a similar project,
please don’t hesitate to contact Rob or the
NPC office.

Monica Stamper (Left) President and
CEO of Kover Krete™ Systems chats with Sara
Jane the newest member of the Kover Krete™
Team. Sara was hired as our plaster and pebble
specialist and is heading up Kover Krete’s™
endeavor into the repairing and preparation of
concrete swimming pools, both gunite and
shotcrete re-dos.
Sara plans to work very closely with the
National Plasterer’s Council and all applicators
through out the United States.
Sara certainly has the experience for the
job. She started out working with one of the
largest pool supply distributors serving the
industry. After learning the pool business
thoroughly, she decided to give up the nuts and
bolts and concentrate solely on the interior of
swimming pools.
Sara spent several years working with
Pebble Tec. Recently, Sara began looking at the
opportunities for growth and excitement of a
smaller company, one that offered more of a
future and advancement in sales and distribution. After speaking with Monica Stamper, an old friend she met years ago at a
trade show, she jumped at the chance to spearhead the Pre-Kote™ (scratch coat) line.
Since starting with Kover Krete™ Systems, Sara has spent most of her time contacting contractors and setting up
on-site demos with Kover Krete™ trainer and technical director, Dan Huckabee. Sara thinks the idea of being with a manufacturer
that offers “everything concrete” is a plus for the end user, many plasterers have already added to their services, acrylic
decking, antiquing, and overlayment stamping. The Kover Krete™ line also includes; paints, resins; polymers, stains, Krak
Treatment and concrete specialty tools.
Give Sara a call, she will be glad to hear from you. (407) 246-7797
