TOWN HALL THEATER 7 SUSPENDERS OWNED BY TREASURER 7 MOST ACCORDIANS ON STAGE AT ONCE SEASON IN NUMBERS 2013-14 ANNUAL REPORT 1 FAMOUS IRONIC DEADPAN COMICS 5 SOPRANOS CROAKING IN FINAL ACT OF AN OPERA 2 HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR PROMS 3 GOATS On behalf of the staff and the Board of Directors of the Town Hall Theater, I am pleased to present our first annual report. Our first six years have been extremely successful because we stand on the shoulders of our community. More than 60% of our costs are underwritten by donations, an equation that is common to theaters everywhere. We do our best to return that faith and investment with over 165 events each year that entertain our community, stimulate the economic vitality of downtown, and introduce our schoolchildren to the wonders of the performing arts. Please take a moment to digest our pie charts, to review our accomplishments, to get to know the worker bees, to celebrate our members and to join us in celebrating birthday #6! At her retirement party last fall Doug presented her with a plaque proclaiming her as Town Hall Theater’s Co-Founder. We miss you, Barbara! 5 PART-TIME STAFF 203 A NATIONAL SEARCH... ...brought us Haley Rice, our new Operations Manager. As an actress she’s worked with Middlebury Actor’s Workshop, Vermont Stage and St. Michaels’ Playhouse. She was once Artistic Director for Cotton Hall Theater in a south Georgia town with only one stoplight. Middlebury has 7 stoplights, so she’s moving up. 6 FULL-TIME STAFF VOLUNTEERS THE NEW KIDS HEIGHT OF OUR LAST TECH DIRECTOR: 6'4" Just coming on board are two new members of our technical team. Jessica Krol has been the technical director for the Addison Repertory Theater at the Hannaford Center. Josh Cote is a recent graduate of Castleton State College, were he majored in technical theater. You’ll also find a new smiling face in our box office as Eileen Corcoran joins the box office staff. Eileen served for several years as the Executive Director of the Vergennes Opera House. HEIGHT OF OUR NEW TECH DIRECTOR: 4'8" Under the expert direction of Lindsay Pontius, THT’s program has become a model for the kind of enrichment a theater can provide to local school children. Classes in music, dance and acting – even for pre-school kids – take place in the Byers Studio at THT. Students of all ages walk to the theater for special performances, and Lindsay works in the classroom with teachers to integrate the arts into the schools’ core curriculum. Percentage of students who attended a performance at Town Hall Theater last year: MARY HOGAN GRADE SCHOOL: 100 % Seeing how energized her students were after a THT event, one principal wrote to us: “ School should be like this every day.” MIDDLEBURY UNION HIGH SCHOOL: 100 % “I love you guys - you’ll do anything!” The speaker had to shout because the building was packed with over 200 fly fishermen. He was right. Last year we hosted events for skiers, gardeners, jazz fans, contra dancers, book lovers, opera lovers, people who speak Chinese, basketball champions, and the Chamber of Commerce. And don’t forget Paula Poundstone, Judy Collins, high school kids blasting out rock & roll, 61 college students in an epic Les Misérables, and many fund-raisers for area non-profits. Throw in a handful of weddings and conferences, a bat mitzvah and the MUHS Junior Prom, and it’s a big, hearty, creative stew – which is a pretty good description of Addison County. The economics of all of this can be scary (see next page). But as long as people feel that what we do here is valuable and worth supporting, THT will continue to be the town’s hall – creative, packed with events, and endlessly rewarding. How do we survive? We’re here because of the generous support of people and businesses in this community. So if you’ve enjoyed events at THT… if you value it as an educational resource… if you’re proud of the restoration of our historic 1883 building…if you think THT contributes to a vibrant downtown… and if you want to see THT continue to thrive and grow, we need your support.
