Set your own itinerary. Explore at your own pace. Go where you want to go. Exploring by Sea Gently Does It... To appreciate everything that Scilly has to offer, you must take to the water. With so many boats to choose from, there is a wide variety of routes, destinations, and boats! Drop in to the Tourist Information Centre, for advice on routes and times that best suit your needs. Our boatmen take great pride in their knowledge and experience, and may well put in an appearance at your hotel in the morning to let you know when and where they are going that day. Radio Scilly also provides boating updates in the morning. Local Lingo: the term ‘off-Islands’ is used to cover St. Agnes, Bryher, Tresco, and St. Martin’s. Uninhabited Islands: ands Th The uninhabited Islands, with their raw, rugged edges and unique flora and fauna, are best experienced in one of two ways: via a guided tour or a scenic boat trip, discovering the entire collection of uninhabited off-Islands and their marine and bird-life. Evening Trips: Exploring the Isles of Scilly is not limited to the daytime. As the day slows down and the sun starts to set, you can join a boat trip to watch the gig races on Wednesday and Friday evenings, book a supper boat to an off-Island eatery, or enjoy an evening fishing trip. Wildlife and Marine Excursions: There are many ways to enjoy the marine environment from the water: take a glassbottomed boat to visit the shallows and secluded coves; enjoy a sea safari and explore the exotic marine habitats; cruise out the six miles to Bishop Rock, the most south-westerly lighthouse in the UK; book a wildlife excursion to experience the fascinating bird and marine life throughout the islands. Off-Island Excursions: Frequent inter-Island boat services operate between all the inhabited Islands, throughout the day. The boatmen will let you know return times, the appropriate quays (some Islands have more than one quay, used at different times, depending on the tides), and if the return journey is on a different boat. On St. Mary’s, boat times are advertised at the Isles of Scilly Tourist Information Centre on Hugh Street and on the boards at the quay. 6 www.simplyscilly.co.uk Experience the Off-Islands The off-Islands can easily be explored on foot or by bicycle. With a few miles of surfaced roads, and dozens of footpaths and trails, you can roam the heathlands and sweeping sandy bays at an easy pace, with few steep climbs. If you have booked your accommodation on the off-Islands, it is easy to use their boating services. All operators offer a range of services, including special hire, direct trips to other Islands, and circular scenic tours. More often than not, your host will be on hand to meet you and your o luggage at the quay and ensure your arrival to your accommodation. Alternatively, hire a bike and explore yourself. Or, book a private hire vehicle (there are no licensed taxis on the Isles of Scilly) for a private tour. If you fancy walking, there are some thirty miles of coastal paths and nature trails just waiting to be discovered. St.Mary’s has many hidden secrets and the walks around the coast and across the numerous trails that crisscross the Island are a delight. Explore the many contrasts from woodlands, heaths and marshland to sand dunes with marram grasses, thick with wild agapanthus flowers from South Africa. Exploring the Isles of Scilly is Truly Unique Discover a different side to the Islands Our boatmen are second-to-none in their knowledge and skill. Discovering the Islands by boat is an incomparably personal experience. A gentle pace of life... In the Scilly Isles, myth and reality seem to blend in a cocktail of romantic escape Richard Wates, The Guardian Simply Scilly Escape to a place where you can truly relax, where the pace is dictated by nature, and life is shaped by the weather and tides. No stress. No traffic jams. Step back in time, to discover a place with few roads, miles of empty sandy beaches, welcoming locals, and an array of new experiences. It all feels quite intimate on Scilly. It is as if you’ve stumbled upon an idyllic film set from a bygone era. From A-list celebrities to 30-year regulars, visitors come to Scilly for the unique, timeless lifestyle and amazing environment. Go for a casual walk on an empty, pristine white beach, rent a cottage with a private beach, or dine locally on island-grown produce and traditional family recipes. Making memories is a key pastime on Scilly. You may find yourself next to a couple at breakfast who have been coming here, every summer, for the past 15 years. The lady next to you at the bank may have been here 20 years ago when she was a child, and is now bringing her children to the idyllic holiday destination of her youth. On Islands where many businesses have been in families for generations, tour guides have been honing their skills over decades, and craftspeople have adapted their wares over many years, memories are made to last. 8 www.simplyscilly.co.uk S E T I R U O V A F s Thee unique events that are gig races, Ladies’’ on Wednesday and Men’s on Friday nights s The variety productions of the Scillonian entertainers s Evening slide-shows focusing on the Islands’ history and natural surroundings s The extraordinary inter-island walks at low tide The whole of Scilly is a reminder of a slower, kinder and more genteel England. Life goes on at a different pace here. Scilly allows visitors to tune in to the rhythms of nature, despite the 21st-century approach that underpins much of what we do. We still do lots of business using cash… and you can get internet wi-fi coverage at many venues across the Islands. Many local craft and food producers use honesty boxes when selling their wares… and lots of our businesses are on the leading-edge of green and environmental practices. You may find the best of modern technology in your room when you check in… and then discover someone using a chocolate tin for boat ticket sales! We take pride in our local produce on Scilly. You can buy Scillonian beef or lobster to sizzle on the barbeque, take home some unique Island beer and wine, savour local treats such as hand-made fudge, chocolate and ice-cream, and stop at one of the farm stalls for rocket and raspberries, free range eggs, or freshly picked fruit and vegetables. There are no bright, intrusive signs. There are no highly polished thoroughfares. There are no loud and noisy theme parks or tourist ‘attractions’. But you will find everything you could wish for… miles of stunning beaches… incredible eateries… local arts, crafts, and produce… marine adventures from diving and kayaking to glass-bottomed boating… amazing walking trails and wildlife areas… family-friendly locals who welcome you like one of their own. There are turquoise shallows enticing you into the sea and fascinating snorkelling spots. The chance to escape the stresses of modern life and find a perfect, sandy beach all to oneself is why holidaymakers are drawn back time and again, in an almost spiritual way. Whatever kind of beach you seek, you’re sure to find it on Scilly. WE’VE MADE A SHORTLIST OF SOME OF THE BEST SPOTS: Pelistry (St. Mary’s): Ask anyone who lives on St. Mary’s why they love Pelistry and the same reasons pop up. Pelistry Bay is almost always deserted, the Eastern Isles gather in the distance, and sustenance is only a five minute walk away. Lastly, if that wasn’t enough, Toll’s Island is perfect to explore at low water (Please note that swimming is not safe when the Bar is covered). Bar Point (St. Mary’s): #FUXFFO.D'BSMBOET%PXOBOEUIF*OOJTJEHFO Bronze Age Tombs you will find Bar Point, one of St. Mary’s most scenic and sandy beaches. Jutting out into the sea, with spectacular views, the underwater sand bar stretches from here to St. Martin’s and Tresco, and is the location of a former, long-eroded, causeway between the Islands. Town Beach (St. Mary’s): Within sight of the bustling St. Mary’s Harbour, under the lifeboat slip in the far corner is an inviting secluded spot where children can mess around in the shallows and enjoy watching the hustle and bustle of boats in the harbour. This corner is quiet, safe, inviting and close to shops and services. Rushy Porth (Tresco): Rushy Porth is framed by the amazing 16th century blockhouse and Lizard Point. The shoreline shelves into dunes supporting tufty marram grass. Panoramic views take in St. Helens and Tean. Appletree Bay (Tresco): Appletree Bay is one of the prettiest beaches on Scilly. The sea sparkles like a blue mosaic across the Tresco flats between Bryher and Samson; the sand is clean and sifts through your fingers like sugar. The famous Abbey Garden is also close by, should you fancy exploring inland. If it’s blowing a southerly, Appletree Bay is a windsurfer’s paradise! Pentle Bay (Tresco): Pentle Bay is a shell collector’s heaven. It is a safe beach for swimming and the views are only interrupted by the Eastern Isles. The beach is ¾ mile long, and shelves gently up into dunes protecting the lush sub-tropical landscape and Tresco Great Pool. 12 www.simplyscilly.co.uk S FAVOURITE Best Beach for romantic walks: Pentle Bay, Tresco Best Beach for rockpooling: Porthloo, St. Mary’s Best beach for beachcombing: Ginamoney Carn, St. Agnes Best beach for swimming: Great Bay, St. Martin’s Best family beach: Popplestone Beach, Bryher Green Bay (Bryher): An idyllic spot, where you can launch a kayak or rowing boat onto glassy waters, where there is rarely a ripple in the ocean. Rushy Bay (Bryher): Bryher is an island of contrasts - with the menace of Hell Bay in the north and welcoming unfussy Rushy Bay in the south. Rushy Bay isn’t just a lovely beach but is also the place for very low water dinghy landings on Bryher. Well worth an afternoon. Lawrence’s Bay (St. Martin’s): This beach is a family haven. There are rock pools at low tide towards Old Quay, gently shelving sand that gives way to tepid shallows over St. Martin’s Flats and soft dunes to protect that all important picnic from any wind. The beach stretches from Lower Town all the way to Higher Town. At low tide, imagine the old causeway that used to link St. Mary’s and St. Martin’s in the Bronze Age. Par Beach (St. Martin’s): This white sand crescent will instantly impress, as it is the first beach you see when you land at Higher Town. A great family beach with safe swimming, views, walks and long grasses to hide out and have a picnic. This beach is so wonderful you will have to tear yourself away to explore the Island’s other beaches. Great Bay (St. Martin’s): There is a raw beauty and remoteness to this gorgeous beach nestled on the north side of the Island. Great Bay is a vast expanse of creamy sand and was recently voted Best Beach in the UK; not to be missed! The Bar (St. Agnes): Separates St. Agnes from the Island of Gugh. Both sides are sheltered on The Cove and Porth Conger offers splendid clear shallows, perfect for messing around in a dingy or watching the tripper boats come in. If it’s been a hard day on the beach then head up the path and within a couple of minutes there is either a café or a pub. (Please note that swimming is not safe when the Bar is covered) Covean (St. Agnes): Covean is a secret gem at the end of a tiny green path. The tiny cove is perfect for snorkeling, as it is hemmed by rocky outcrops teaming with marine life. For the more adventurous swimmer you can also follow the coast around to The Bar (not for a drink!) where Porth Conger and The Cove meet. Periglis (St. Agnes): It’s hard to imagine that much has changed in the last 100 years at Periglis. The fishermen still land their catch there, the vista is broken by Annet, the Western rocks and the Bishop Rock lighthouse stands proudly as the last beckon of the UK. Periglis is framed by the old lifeboat slip (once the longest in the UK) and Ginamoney Carn a shell collector’s paradise. There are rockpools, beach, shells, birds and probably mermaids all waiting to be found! www.simplyscilly.co.uk 13 Take me there TRESCO KEY FEATURE: Tresco devotes itself wholly to its visitors. The allure of the Island is everywhere in the variety of scenery, the rich and diverse heritage, the range of luxurious accommodation and facilities. The jewel in the Island’s crown is certainly the world famous Tresco Abbey Garden, a 17acre sub-tropical horticultural home to 20,000 species of exotic plants. 14 www.simplyscilly.co.uk Tresco is pint-sized, but perfectly formed, firing the imagination of the explorer in all of us. Lose yourself in the ruins of both castles and enjoy one of the best views on Scilly over the kingdom of Lyonnesse, down Tresco Channel and over Samson with St. Agnes in the distance. Head south through farmland, manicured fields and tree-lined avenues past the freshwater pools where birds flock. Look out for dunlins, plovers, mallards and teal. Enter the famous Garden which is home to species from over 80 countries from Brazil to Burma, 200 of which are in flower even on New Year’s day. Muse over a collection of nearly 60 relics including bronze cannon, figureheads and nameplates salvaged ffrom some off the h countless l local l l wrecks k in i the h Valhalla Museum. Beyond the Garden, along the southward and eastern shoreline are some of the Island’s most magnificent beaches. On Appletree Bay, periwinkles and ginamoney shells nestle into fine-sand beaches. It is heroic, funny and always interesting. Get up North: be invigorated by walking up Tregarthen Hill on a breezy day and look out at the surf frothing over the Golden Ball ledges. You can snorkel with seals and watch fish of all shapes and sizes dart through Scilly’s spectacular underwater kingdom, or enjoy a trip on a rib around some of the outer isles, to see the best of the marine life from on the water. www.simplyscilly.co.uk 17 Take me there ST MARTIN’S KEY FEATURE: St. Martin’s is a paradise island of quartz sands surrounded by translucent turquoise seas. There are miles upon miles of deserted white powder beaches, and in the distance the Eastern Isles sit like a shimmering necklace low in the water. Behind sweeping sands lie an array of eateries, a range of galleries, a dive school, a flower farm, a post office and general store, plus a range of accommodation. 18 www.simplyscilly.co.uk St. Martin’s exudes a secluded tranquillity. Viewed from any of the other Islands, you notice first the glorious beaches. They seem endless. They’re never crowded. They grow and grow as the spring-tide ebbs, so that on a sunny day you wade through palest glass-blue shallows over parchment-coloured sand. Great Bay, Little Bay, Bread and Cheese Cove or Lawrence’s Bay jostle for the honour of best beach in the UK, but you can make up your own mind. If you can’t resist the invitation of the water try learning to dive or snorkel with a diving course based on St. Martin’s. Take the opportunity to head around the neighbouring Eastern Isles to snorkel with seals. The Isles of Scilly are a wonderful and uniquely beautiful holiday destination, home and workplace to some 2,000 people. Scilly has bred vigorous, successful people throughout history from sea-going pilots to master mariners, flower growers to shipbuilders. Islanders are by definition resourceful and independent-minded people and Scillonians are no exception. It will come as no surprise to find that over a third of the working population on Scilly is self-employed. Many work in the traditional industries of fishing and farming, growing the lovely scented narcissi. Farms here resemble the kind of smallholding that still flourished on mainland &OHMBOEBUUIFFOEPGUIFUIDFOUVSZXJUITNBMMlFMETBOEESZTUPOFXBMMT Fisherman catch a range of gastronomic delights, from lobster and crab to turbot and mackerel; some is served locally but much is exported to the UK and Europe. Tourism also now supports many local business people, with enterprises ranging from craft workshops to inter-island boating to eateries featuring local produce and traditional family recipes. 28 www.simplyscilly.co.uk S FAVOURITE s Diiscover c a rich and varied past by exploring the many and varied archaeological sites s Be inspired to unleash your own creativity – take part in one of the many creative courses and workshops s Enjoy some of the theatrical productions put on by local and visiting travelling theatre troupes Heritage The Museum boasts a treasure-trove of Bronze-Age finds, ship-wreck artefacts and island heritage, including a fully-rigged gig in the centre. The Heritage Centre contains a heritage exhibition and documents how life on the Islands used to be. Another fascinating source of information, and old Scillonian stories, may be your accommodation proprietor with a wealth of knowledge and family history. Pilot Gigs The first Pilot Gig Boats were built in the 17th century with the purpose of taking a pilot out to a sailing ship and putting him aboard to navigate the ship into safe waters. Pilotage in Scilly was for many years a primary source of income as the first man aboard got the job and of course the rewards that came with it, and thus gig racing began. Today, gig racing has grown to be such a popular pastime that women race on Wednesday evenings and men on Fridays throughout the summer months. Local competition is fierce! Farming Flower farming continues to prosper across the Islands (albeit in smaller numbers than in the past) and our fields boast the earliest blooming white and golden narcissi in the UK. Farmers also play a key role in maintaining the landscape and many have shops or honesty boxes so you can take home your own horticultural piece of Scilly. Many local farmers are also turning their hand to alternative crops and produce, such as harvesting herbs to turn into essential oils, free range chicken farming, and dairy farming for the creation of dairy products such as mouth-watering ice cream. Gardens To many, the Isles of Scilly are one big garden, but the temperate climate has produced two outstanding examples – the world famous Tresco Abbey (BSEFOBOEUIFDPNNVOJUZHBSEFO$BSSFH%IVPO4U.BSZT4VCUSPQJDBMQMBOUT however, may be seen all over the Islands in hedgerows, in sheltered areas on the downs or in many household gardens. History & Archaeology There is an abundance of archaeological sites in Scilly from the Neolithic through to the Second World War including Bronze Age burial sites, an Iron Age village and Civil War defences, all adding to the rich tapestry of Scilly’s heritage. Some of the best ways to explore these are via a guided walk, an evening slide show, or by using guide books and other literature. Creative Pursuits In this unique maritime setting, which provides stunning themes for photographers, painters, and craftsmen, it comes as no surprise that many locals make a living from the creative industries. Artists paint in beach studios, landscape photographers capture the changing moods, beachcombers make jewellery from their finds, potters create distinctive mementoes to take home. If you have a creative flair yourself, why not try painting or sketching some of the most memorable views in the world, enroll in a winter bakery course, or engage in a felt or stained glass making workshop? DON’T MISS... There is a lively, Island-wide music scene, with a variety of bands playing anything from jazz and folk, to rhythm and blues and rock. Concerts and shows provide a real showcase for the talented acts. Openair operatic and theatrical events, musicals, plays, choral concerts and comedies, all play a big part on Scilly, with both local and touring companies staging productions throughout the season. www.simplyscilly.co.uk 29 30 www.simplyscilly.co.uk www.simplyscilly.co.uk 31 White Island Porth Morran ound St Helen’s le nt y Ba Cr App l Pe uthward So Point ow Tresco etr ee B Higher Town e’s Ba y The Town La w ren c Ba Ru shy artin’s Bay Middle Town Old Grimsby New Grimsby Porth eat Gr Lower Town So un d Cr ay ow Ba r Cruise Ship Anchorage ve Co Pelistr Pelistry Port Porthloo hm el Carregh Dhu Rocky Hill n lo Th ill e rm Wat Bant’s Carn St Mary’s d Hugh Town hi gh yB ay h rt Po th cr e ssa or of Sci llon ian I low an loni Scil e of t u o er tid So III Ba y North Gugh d o eC Th un ng eta gl in W 1/2 0 Ba y scale - one mile Toilets Art/Craft Studio Roman Remains Disabled Toilet Watersports Prehistoric Site Tourist Information Baby Changing Shooting Range & Archery Monument 1 Ferry Terminal Shower Cycle Hire Historic Building 2 Police Church Outdoor Swimming Pool Sub-aqua Activity 3 Post Office Lifeboat Station Golf Course Tennis 4 Town Hall No Dogs Allowed (May to Sept) Trenoweth Horticulture Centre Exploring 5 Library Playground Garden Deep Water Moorings Hospital Radio Mast Horseriding Harbour School Lighthouse Viewpoint Airport Public Telephone Public House Museum Heliport Car Park Café/Restaurant Castle 32 www.simplyscilly.co.uk II n w To th ve Finding your way around the Islands ou te Peninnis So un d Lower Town lis g i r Higher Town Pe Bishop Rock Lighthouse Old Town er d Ol y ar M St Smi Annet r go Porth Con St Agnes ’s el lic k H Garrison tid Mount Todden Salakee P Eastern Isles Cruise Ship Anchorage Samson oa eR y To wn Bryher Ba y St Martin’s St M High er ell Tean ur bo Har H Tea nS l St Helen’s Poo 1 Q R S T U V W Bar Point II eP ttl Y orth I Innisidgen Block House Point o lC mil Water Helvear Trenear's Rock Higher Trenoweth Higher Newford Telegraph 3 Ancient Village & Burial Chambers ve Ancient Village & Burial Chambers Toll's Porth high Helvear Down Bar Farm Halangy Down Creeb tide 2 rou te of sc ill on i an 1 Li X Carn Morval Point Watermill Content Borough Battery Pe lis tr Pelistry Hig h Lanes Maypole 10 Pellew's Redoubt Green Farm Toll's Island y Bay 31 A 4 Taylor's Island Porthloo Newford Island M Pool 6 Rat Island Barrel of Butter Th om Po rt h ch Town Bea Battery Rocky Hill as' Porth Parting Carn 0 Jacky's Point Higher Moors th Chambered Cairns Castle He llick Porth Hellick Point Battery Airport A3112 Ki Salakee Down Old Town Newfoundland Point Fort Old Quay Ol d Tolman Point Bay wn To ad Ro a ress 's ard ng E d w c Porth Chambered Cairns Chambered Cairns Por Salakee Lower Moors 7 Chambered Cairns 111 Hugh Town 8 Deep Point Lunnon 11 Tremelethen The Garrison Steval Chambered Cairns A3 Star Castle Doctor's Keys Gap Point Normandy Battery n ck Wre rth Po Mount Todden Kitty Downs A3 Harry's Walls m el lo Holy Vale Rd. y's ar 5 St egraph Tel Trewince Woolpack Point Wras Church Point Peninnis Head w lo de ti 9 Chambered Cairns ro ut e of sc ill on i Inner Head an North Outer Head III 1/4 0 1/2 half a mile Island code A B C D E F G H 1 3 2 rt hm Tow on B 5 p Hi er gh ph ra . Wake up on Scilly – when you look out onto the sea for the first time that day, your horizons broaden, vistas open up, and the sky is huge. The Isles of Scilly are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with a community which highly values its heritage and history. You will find that the range of accommodation offerings make the most of the architectural heritage. From converted barns to castles, from 4-star hotels to 2-star self catering, there is a range of options to suit everyone. Enjoy England’s classifications are used throughout the Islands. All the national assessing bodies (VisitBritain, VisitScotland, VisitWales and the AA) now assess hotels and guest accommodation (including B&Bs) to the same criteria and award one to five stars. The star ratings reflect the overall quality of the experience. When choosing your accommodation look for the Quality Rose, the official marque of the Enjoy England national tourist board rating scheme. Enjoy England’s ratings made easy ´ Simple, practical, no frills. ´´ Well presented and well run. ´´´ Good level of quality and comfort. ´´´´ Excellent standard throughout. ´´´´´ Exceptional with a degree of luxury. If you choose to stay in any of Enjoy England’s quality-assessed accommodation, you can be confident that it has been checked out before you check in. For more information on the Enjoy England Quality Rose assessment schemes and the star ratings, go to: www.enjoyEngland.com AA ratings In addition to the Enjoy England ratings there is also accommodation that has been inspected by the AA. They also use the new star ratings and the standards are in line with Enjoy England. See www.theaa.com The Green Tourism Business Scheme Accommodation providers are assessed every two years to receive this accreditation, which recognises efforts made to reduce impact on the environment. Energy efficiency, recycling and minimising waste, use of local produce and supporting public transport are all taken into account. Island Tourism The Islands’ Chamber of Commerce, is a voluntary body providing a voice for all member businesses on a wide and varied range of issues that directly or indirectly affect tourism. Denotes membership. Cancellations Please do check cancellation policies with individual accommodation providers. A proprietor is entitled to claim compensation, even on a holiday cancelled through illness, so taking out cancellation insurance is advisable. Finding the information you need You can find a wealth of information about the Isles of Scilly, accommodation, activities and attractions, and lots more at www.simplyscilly.co.uk, the official Tourist Board website. Staff members at the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) in Hugh Street on St Mary’s are happy to help with all kinds of enquiries. Tresco Estate requires that visiting dogs remain on a lead. Isles of Scilly Tourist Information Service 01720 42 40 31 tic@scilly.gov.uk www.simplyscilly.co.uk Health There is a fully-equipped cottage hospital and dental surgery on St Mary’s and a nearby Health Centre with a surgery and a dispensary. A medical launch links the Islands and there is a water ambulance, the Star of Life. Power Utilities The electricity supply at 240 Volts is exactly the same as on the mainland. So too are tariffs. Bottled gas is obtainable. Telecoms BT provides the standard landline connection. Most mobile phone networks can be picked up across the Islands. Dogs Dogs and responsible owners are welcomed in Scilly. During the summer months several beaches on St Mary’s have restrictions. Dogs are happily accepted on the inter-island launches but Accessibility Disability Cornwall has provided a Sand Chair to enable people to access some of the beaches on St Mary’s. Details of hire may be obtained from the TIC on St Mary’s. Money There are two banks on St Mary’s – Barclays and Lloyds TSB – but none on the Off-Islands. There is a cash machine outside Lloyds TSB which takes cards. Several shops offer cashback facilities with Switch and Delta cards. There are sub-post offices on each of the off Islands that offer National Girobank and National Savings facilities. Please note, however, that many businesses still operate largely on a cash basis and may not accept debit or credit cards. It is always best to ring ahead to confirm. View online at www.simplyscilly.co.uk Police Scilly is one of the safest communities anywhere in Britain. Local magistrates meet once every three months, but only if required. The sole police station is on St Mary’s which has a Sergeant, two PCs and a Community Support Officer. The Islands’ crime rate is almost non-existent. Insurance Scilly is part of the United Kingdom, but as the Islands are an off-shore destination, it is prudent to take out holiday insurance to guard against delays due to weather or other eventualities. Whilst every effort has been taken to ensure the accuracy of information in this guide, the Isles of Scilly Tourist Board accepts no liability for errors, omissions or any inconvenience arising thereof.
