Diesel Black Gold
Fall 2015
Ready-to-Wear
The Diesel Black Gold formula is tried-and-true.
Black leather, black denim, grommets, studs.
The challenge for designer Andreas Melbostad,
is how to renew it each season.
The Italian brand’s premium line, showcased in
New York, was built around denim and leather,
core pieces of any aspiring rock chick’s
wardrobe. But with that focus also comes a need
to present a variation each season. For the fall
2015 collection Designer Melbostad dialed down
the sense of embellished glamour that has
defined his recent work for a subtle and
controlled exercise of opposites.
Focusing on a drab palette of antique black,
steely gray, and a deep midnight blue, Melbostad
explored iterations of urban power through
outerwear archetypes tweaked to mini and maxi
proportions, like a tiny zipped biker or the
mannish-shouldered blazers that gave an edge
of eighties power dressing to rib-knit sweater
dresses contoured with whipcord lacing.

Another key aspect of the clothes was their
industrial, utilitarian details. D-rings replaced
studs as the embellishment du jour. Parachute
straps added definition to waistlines but were just
as often used as decoration, connecting the top
and bottom halves of a tank dress or creating a
sort of hard-core fringe on the front of a skirt.
The cropped jacquard jeans, in midnight blue,
were one of few appearances by denim in the
nearly all-black show. If it is a leather jacket
you’re after, however, Melbostad is your man.
Variations on the theme included an abbreviated
punk classic and a longline blazer with a shawl
collar.

Talking about the collection Black Gold creative
director Andreas Melbostad said “I’m not a denim
scientist, but some in my team are. It was a really
nice discovery to make damasks out of denim
and then wash and treat them. It gave another
richness.”

New Denim Lines For Ss15
launched by Uniqlo
Japanese retailer Uniqlo has announced two
new additions for spring/summer 2015,
expanding its already vast denim range. The SS
15 collection will include stretch selvedge denim
and Miracle Air jeans.
According to a statement the stretch selvedge
denim combines the traditional manufacturing
processes used to produce selvedge denim with
high stretch fabrics and Uniqlo seeks to “fuse
tradition and modernity to deliver a fashionable
silhouette”.
The jeans will be available in four washes and a
slim- or straight-cut, the end result is a superior
quality selvedge jean that fits perfectly and is
supremely comfortable to wear over long
periods.
The brand has developed a how-core yarn in
partnership with the world renowned Kaihara
denim mill and fabric innovators Toray, to
produce the aptly named Miracle Air jeans.
This specially developed fabric ensures the
jeans are extremely light, and offers additional
stretch due to air being able to pass through and
around the fibres. Altogether, Miracle Air jeans
are said to be around 20 per cent lighter and

offer 15 per cent more stretch than your average
pair, making them perfect for everyday wear and
a genuine option for style-conscious cyclists.
Across the remainder of its SS15 denim line,
Uniqlo sticks to classic colour ways – ranging
from light blue to deep indigo – in skinny- and
slim-fits. Other key pieces include a selection of
denim shirts, which are available in dip-dye and
dark washes.

JNCO Set To Return With Ultra
-Wide Denim Jeans
The wide-legged, slouchy
skater jeans that ruled in the
1990s are making a
comeback, this time as an
all-purpose denim brand.
JNCO jeans are rebranding
under the ownership of a
Chinese trading company.
Simply the mention of the
Southern California cult
brand JNCO (which stands
for “the Journey of the
Chosen Ones”) was enough
to send many children of the
1990s off on euphoric
nostalgia trips.
The Chinese trading
company Guotai Litian
bought the brand seven months ago according
to the company’s USA CEO, Andrew Jacouvou.
Guotai Litian manufactures apparel for a
number of brands, including JNCO, which was
founded in Los Angeles in 1985.
To the surprise of many, JNCOs were still being
manufactured and sold in specialty stores,
Jacouvou says. “When we actually took over,
we’d just delivered a million dollars worth of
product to them for that season,” he says.
The company has been reintroducing the jeans
at fashion hubs such as the Liberty Fashion
Fairs in Las Vegas and New York. The men’s
line will launch online in April, and will be in
stores at the beginning in July, Jacouvou tells

Quartz. JNCO jeans for women will be available
next season.
The inaugural Fall 2015 line will include three
capsules -- the core collection, a heritage
range, will feature jeans with leg openings of 20
and 23 inches.
"JNCO will appeal to trendsetting men and
women who wore the brand in the '90s, as well
as a new generation of consumers who will be
introduced to the brand's fashion-forward
sensibilities for the first time," said Andrew
Jacovou, who was named president and CEO
of Los Angeles-based arm of Guotai Litian.

sportswear brand is looking at expanding
globally and launched various projects.
AG, founded in 2000 by denim guru Adriano
Goldschmied, is owned by the Ku family since
2004. Despite the fact that it is mostly sold in the

The first international expansion operations had
started in 2012, with the newly signed

inspiration for the female universe,” commented
Sam Ku, creative director AG.
Although the brand is sold in the US and Middle
East to 60% women and 40% men, and in Russia

Shockoe Denim expands to
full line of clothing
Shockoe Denim, founded in 2012,
has quickly earned a reputation for
producing exquisite but durable
jeans. Each pair of jeans and
khakis is handmade at the
company’s production floor on
South 15th Street in Shockoe
Bottom.
The fashion startup is now aiming
higher, by designing a full line of
clothing and renaming itself to
Shockoe Atelier.
Anthony Lupesco, Founder said
the 18 employees of the company
influenced the creation of an
“atelier,” or artist’s workshop. The
29-year-old looks to his degree
from the Academy of Art University
in San Francisco, and to his
parents, for inspiration.
“I wanted to create a collection that
elevates denim, but is a mix of
styles,” Lupesco said.
In fact, Shockoe Atelier’s basic
philosophy is a hybrid: part
American heritage and part haute
couture.
Lupesco’s parents have over 40 years of
experience with Italian luxury brands. And
Lupesco operated a high-end men’s and women’s
apparel store called If by Anthony Lupesco that
operated for a couple of years in Shockoe Slip
beginning in 2006.
However, he wanted to produce something in the
United States — and he picked up jean
manufacturing.
Managing partner and co-owner Matt Rho,
formerly with private-equity firm New Richmond
Ventures, said customers expect to be offered an
entire outfit.
“We could’ve just devoted ourselves to denim
heads,” said Rho, referring to fans of raw denim,
an unwashed fabric which conforms to the
wearer’s body. “But many of them, and others, are
wondering what’s next — so we’re here to offer
some ideas.”
The next step, Rho explains, is pairing the
universality of jeans with urbane tops. Vivid
textures and kaleidoscopic colors define the
collection, with pieces such as alpaca wool trench
coats, speckled vests, and floral print shirts.
A few ragged edges, on items like unhemmed
scarves and patchwork jeans, italicize Shockoe
Atelier’s fine-tuned vision. “There’s a lot of
Richmond in this company,” Rho said. “At the
same time, we’re going for a cosmopolitan look.”
The emergence of a Richmond garment district is a
real possibility, said Paul Trible, who co-founded
Ledbury five years ago. The Richmond-based
high-end shirt and accessories business raised $5
million in venture funding last year.
