Brewery — Continued from Page 2 of beer. By the end of 2014, it hopes to produce eighty thousand barrels. NCBC now ranks tenth in size among California’s 330 craft breweries and forty-second among twenty-five hundred craft breweries in the U.S. So how did all of this come about right here in the “other” Fort Bragg, the one on the West Coast? a little hISTORY lesson: And what does it all mean? And what’s next? Ah…these are intriguing questions to ponder, ones that are better answered sharing a, well, a great beer. First, there’s a bit of history. Mark Ruedrich discovered good beer while living in a small village in England for a few years in the late 1970s. When he and his wife Merle returned to the U.S. they moved to Fort Bragg, California to be near the ocean. They could not find good beer to drink like they had in England, so Mark took up home brewing. He bought some equipment, read some books and began experimenting. Mark’s day job was working as a carpenter. While restoring the Mendocino Village Inn in Mendocino, his employer Joe Rosenthal mentioned to inn owner Tom Allen that Mark was making home brew and it tasted good. The three eventually formed a limited partnership, and two years later North Coast Brewing Company opened on the southeast corner of Main and Pine Streets: a brewery and a pub. Mark became the Brewmaster, Merle ran the Taproom and Grill, and Tom, with a Madison Avenue background, took on the job of Marketing Director. From the very beginning, it’s been all about the beer. Only a few ingredients are used in brewing: water, malt, hops, yeast, and in the case of a few of our beers, a measure of specialty sugars. Mark claims that Fort Bragg water is perfect for making beer, as good as any brewing water in the world. NCBC purchases high-grade malt and hops and the yeast is a proprietary strain that is maintained and propagated in the brewery lab. The color of the beers comes from using different roasted malts; the flavor comes from the four ingredients. ABOVE: The original Taproom circa 1988 had a wood-burning fireplace, mismatched chairs and tables, and a moose head and elk head on the wall. The bar was found in Old Town Eureka in a saloon that had been derelict since the 1950s. It had come ‘round the Horn in the 1880s to California on a Clipper ship. The bar top is a single slab of Honduras mahogany. The bar is still in use today. Photo provided. North Coast Brewing opened for business on August 17, 1988. The pub offered Ruedrich’s Red Seal Ale, Scrimshaw Pilsner. and Old No. 45 Stout (subsequently renamed Old No 38 in 1989)—three iconic beers that are in bottles, on tap, and in production today. Over the years, NCBC President and Brewmaster Ruedrich and his team of brewers have developed over two dozen different brews, some for special occasions, such as Christmas or anniversaries, others, proprietary beers for a number of businesses, including Whole Foods and Oliver Twist, one of Stockholm, Sweden’s favorite watering holes. Many of these beers have stayed on as part of the NCBC portfolio. The goal of brewing is the same today as it was twenty-five years ago: to make consistently fresh, flavorful, distinctive, and well-balanced beer. Brewery — Continued on Page 4 Page 4 Real Estate Magazine July 26, 2013 Brewery — Continued from Page 3 The 1990s was a decade of growth for NCBC. The new ten thousand square-foot brewery opened on the southwest corner of Main and Pine Streets in 1994, expanding capacity from twelve hundred to fifteen thousand barrels per year. The expansion was driven in part by the increasing demand for NCBC beer, stimulated by the many awards the beers were winning at beer competitions, including the Great American Beer Festival in Denver and Chicago’s World Beer Championships where, in 1998, North Coast was recognized as “One of the World’s Ten Best Breweries.” In 1996 NCBC revived the famous old Acme brand name of San Francisco’s Acme Brewing Company fame, once the biggest beer brand in the western United States. Finding that the Acme name had been abandoned, North Coast registered the name and old logo graphics and by 1999 had released three beers under that name, two of which are in production today, Acme Pale Ale and Acme IPA. Three more beers were released in the nineties. The first was Blue Star Wheat Beer, which went on to win multiple gold medals at international competitions. The next release was ABOVE: Three examples of early carrier, glass Old Rasputin Russian Imperial and bottle shots. Notice the original Acme Pale Stout, a gold medal winner before Ale artwork. The “Acme Woman” update is on it was even bottled, considered by page 2. Photos provided. many as the standard for Russian imperial stouts today. Since its release, Old Rasputin has developed a mystique all its own that has nothing to do with its mystical namesake. The third in this triad of releases was PranQster Belgian Style Golden Ale, the first of the three Belgian beers brewed by the company. This ale has its own merry band of followers and to quote one recent member, “PranQster is magic.” followed. Old Rasputin and Old Stock Ale lent themselves to aging in bourbon or whisky barrels, a process that adds complexity, depth and flavor to these gold medal brews. The Gold medal-winning Twentieth Anniversary Ale released in 2008 was a barrel-aged beer that was so well received, it was renamed Grand Cru and added to the portfolio. And Now: This brief but represen- tative history has brought us to 2013 and the twenty-fifth anniversary of NCBC. Earlier this year, North Coast Brewing and two other West Coast members of the pioneering “Class of ’88,”—Rogue Ales and Deschutes Brewery, both located in Oregon—collaborated on a trio of commemorative beers. Each of the breweries created its own distinctive interpretation of a barleywine. Brewers traveled to each other’s locations and teamed up to brew all three ales resulting in three similar but distinctive barleywines. NCBC will release its own celebratory Tenty-fifth Anniversary Ale this fall. One of the questions most frequently asked of NCBC is “Why are you in Fort Bragg?” Admittedly, it’s somewhat remote Merle Ruedrich stands beaming in front by today’s standards. Shipping all the of a pallet of cases of Mark Ruedrich’s Red Seal Ale, NCBC’s flagship beer. beer bottles, kegs and beer products— Photo provided. glasses, tap handles, tin signs, neon signs, posters, coasters, clothing, etc.—out of the area takes a lot of time, planning and equipment. But the answer is simple. It’s home. We love it here and we’re here to stay. We’re right on the edge of the continent with the Pacific Ocean to our west and redwood and fir forests to the east. Along the entire length of the Mendocino coastline, creeks and rivers empty into the ocean. It’s a beautiful place and we’re lucky enough to live here. We have eighty full-time employees and twentyeight part-timers. They all live here, too We’re part of the greater coastal community. Doug Moody joined the NCBC team in 1996 as vice president and sales director. He brought his extensive experience in finance and management to the table, eventually expanding the scope of the company’s distribution to all fifty states, Europe, China, Japan, Australia, and South America. By the year 2000 the number of craft breweries in the U.S. had risen to 1,150. NCBC continued growing, introducing new brews and increasing capacity. It was then that the groundbreaking Old Stock Ale, a vintage dated Old Ale, was released and took platinum at the World Beer Championships. Brother Thelonious, North Coast’s second Belgian-style ale, named after famed jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk, was introduced in 2006. This brew initiated an entirely new activity for NCBC: philanthropic support of jazz education. Le Merle, the third of the brewery’s Belgian-style ales, was introduced in 2007 and took the Brussels Gold medal for a Saison in 2012, which is a big deal because the saison style originated in Belgium. Barrel Aging: NCBC began a new chapter in brewing at the start of the twenty-first century, beginning the practice of barrelaging beers, a practice that many other craft breweries have since The Brewery Taproom glows under a quarter moon. On Friday and Saturday evenings live jazz can be heard in the Sequoia Room (on the left side of this photo.) Newly remodeled, and with an updated menu and newly installed brick oven for baking pizza, the Taproom is ready for its next twenty-five years. Photo provided. What does it all mean? Even though it’s all about the beer, it’s also about a lot more. It’s about balance, quality and integrity in the product, in the workplace, and in the community. Yes, there is a relationship between craft breweries and fostering community. Perhaps it’s because beer is a social drink and people come together to have a beer and share ideas and stories, strengthen friendships, and make new contacts. Perhaps it’s because craft brewers’ impetus Brewery — Continued on Page 7 Real Estate Magazine July 26, 2013 Page 5 For information about advertising in Real Handy Ads Call 357-4371 and ask for Lisa Or write to: Real Estate Magazine, 160 South Harold Street, Fort Bragg, CA 95437 CUSTOM FABRICATION – SHEET METAL Fort Bragg Plumbing Douglas Well Test Reports Architect Septic Tank Inspections Paul Schlosser, Newberger Architects 435 N. Perhaps it’s because nurturing people naturally leads to nurturing community. According to the California Craft Brewers Association, 330 California craft breweries gave sixteen million dollars of in-kind contributions to nonprofit causes in 2011. In 2012 NCBC contributed to over one hundred nonprofit and educational organizations, most on the Mendocino Coast, but also groups across the U.S. Some of the donations were in-kind, some were monetary. Go to almost any benefit on the Mendocino Coast and you’ll find that NCBC has donated beer. We’ve turned beer into thousands (and thousands) of dollars for many organizations over the last twenty-five years. At the 2013 Salmon Barbecue on July 7, sales of donated beer brought in over ten thousand dollars, all proceeds going to the Salmon Restoration Association. business and Caring: NCBC cares about the quality of life of this community and wants to see it prosper and thrive. It has a long history of supporting nonprofit groups that promote the education of youth and adults, cultural enrichment, environmental causes, and the health and well-being of the people that call this special place their home. NCBC donates its spent grain to feed local livestock and build coastal soils and in 2013 will contribute over three hundred metric tons of spent grains to local farms and gardens including the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens and Noyo Food Forest. Spent grain is a nutritious and versatile source of food for farm animals, from cattle to chickens, and many local farmers use this resource to supplement their animal feed. Once composted, it becomes a rich source of fertilizer for vegetable and flower gardens. Many organizations on the coast are supported or sponsored by NCBC, including the Mendocino Music Festival, Mendocino Film Festival, Mendocino Art Center, Mendocino Theater Company, Mendocino Coast Jazz Society, Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, Symphony of the Redwoods, Gloriana Theater Company, and Noyo Food Forest. The Thelonious Monk National Performing Arts High School All-Star Jazz Sextet played at the 2013 Mendocino Music Festival. In addition to being the Presenting Sponsor of the Festival, NCBC totally underwrote the Sextet’s concert, flew the musicians to California, put them up in a local motel, fed them and paid each player a professional fee for his services. The group put on a fantastic concert Saturday afternoon, July 20. Each one of these young musicians is a virtuoso and a team player, a winning combination for any musical group. After dinner at the Brewery Taproom, the musicians played a spontaneous concert for those fortunate enough to be eating or drinking at the pub. It is the proud supporter of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and a model for commerce meeting arts. The Caspar Children’s Garden (CCG) preschool board of directors has been working since early spring on an agreement to move their program to the farm house located at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens (MCBG). This past week the board was unexpectedly informed that the Botanical Garden was no longer interested in renting to them. CCG has already spent over $8000 (almost half their savings) applying for a County use permit (in conjunction with the MCBG and their landlord, the Mendocino Coast Recreation & Park District) and were willing to make improvements at their own expense. With this disappointing news, the program is now in need of a new home. The preschool has 25+ years experience running a successful business serving hundreds of families; a team of experienced teachers; a large group of parents waiting to enroll their children this fall; and a storage unit packed to capacity with all the materials and furniture that belong in an early childhood program. If you know of a possible location or can contribute in any way to this urgent request for assistance, please contact the CCG director, Sandra Mix, at cg@mcn.org or 707-367-9763. There’s even more. NCBC is the “Official Brewery Partner” of the world famous Monterey Jazz Festival, and sponsors SF Jazz Festivals, Oregon Coast Jazz Party, American Jazz Museum’s Rhythm & Ribs Festival, and countless jazz concerts held every year across the U.S. in performance halls and jazz clubs. So, what’s next? We have momentum, projects and goals, and the clear direction of the bottom line: to make consistently fresh, flavorful, distinctive, and well-balanced beer. We also want to maintain fiscal vitality, to manage our resources responsibly and to continue our commitment to the brewery employees and to the greater coastal community. The goals we have are interrelated. For example, we are expanding the brewery capacity, but in small increments, so we have the infrastructure to support the expansion. We installed three new fermenting tanks in May that will help boost production capacity 40 percent over last year and added a dozen additional people to the work force. Before summer is over we will have three shifts a day, working seven days a week to make, bottle, keg, and ship our beer. We want to get to the point where our supply can meet demand for our products. There have been recent additions to the staff to help support the administrative and operational infrastructure. Last February we remodeled the kitchen in the Brewery Taproom and added a stone hearth oven. The restaurant menu is designed to pair food with beer and features a large variety of pizzas, fresh salads, and seafood along with roasted meats and specialty appetizers. All the restaurant wait staff recently passed the Certified Beer Server Cicerone (equivalent to a sommelier) test. The course study included how to serve beer, beer styles, flavors, ingredients, and classic food pairings. The staff is knowledgeable, capable, and ready to assist diners with food and beer pairings. The project to install solar panels on the brewery roof became fully operational on June 28. We are now generating part of the electricity used in the brewery and at the same time reducing the amount of greenhouse gas produced. In just two weeks, greenhouse gas reduction was over eight thousand pounds. Electricity is given back to the grid when the brewery is not using it. We installed an efficient new boiler to reduce the use of propane and plan to install a new mash press filter that will reduce water usage. You bet it’s a great place to work. As one of the largest private employers in Fort Bragg, NCBC is an equal opportunity employer, promotes diversity, provides a safe work environment, and has a full-time director of human resources. The majority of the employees are full-time workers. The company provides health insurance, paid vacations, and other benefits. It has an “open door policy” which means that employees always have access to all levels of management. In short, NCBC cares about the quality of life of its employees in the same way that it cares about the quality of life of the larger community. After twenty-five years in business, NCBC has firmly established itself as a highly respected leader in the craft brewing industry, a progressive and innovative business in Mendocino County, as well as a tourist destination in Fort Bragg. NCBC will continue giving back and supporting this community because it is committed to quality, integrity, and balance in beer, in the workplace, and in society. ABOVE Center: The entrance to the Brewery Store on the northwest corner of Main and Pine streets. In addition to selling NCBC brews, the store sells NCBC branded apparel, glasses, coasters, tin and neon signs, and all kinds of beer gear. ABOVE LOWER: On the evening of May 13, 2013 a calm and competent crew from NCBC directed the placement of three brand new stainless steel fermenting tanks into the southwest side of the Brewery. Two heavy-duty cranes lifted the 22,000 pound tanks above the roof and lowered them onto the floor. In preparation for the installation, three twelve-foot diameter holes were cut into the Brewery roof and the existing eightinch concrete floor was excavated and replaced by a four-foot thick concrete base laced with rebar and topped with steel anchor bolts to hold the fermenters in place. Each tank holds 16,275 gallons, roughly enough to fill 170,000 twelve-ounce bottles. When full, each tank will weigh 152,000 pounds. LEFT: The new Taproom sign on Main Street, Fort Bragg.
