CourseOverview
Thecourseconsistsofthreeloops:a10Kloop(redonmap)throughfieldsandforestsontrailsthatare
60%doubletrackand40%singletrack,and0.7/1.4miledoubletrackloops(bluedottedonmap)though
fields.10Krunnerswillstartat8:00amdothe10Klooponce.50Krunnerswillstartat8:00amanddo
the10Kloopfivetimes.Half-marathonerswillstartat8:10am,beginwiththe0.7mileloopandfinish
withtwo10Kloops.Marathonerswillstartat8:30am,beginwiththe1.4mileloopandfinishwithfour

Thefootingonthecourseismostlysmoothtrail,buttherearesomerutted,rooted,androckysections.
Thereareafewbouldersthatmustbehoppedordodged,andtherearesomeshortbutsteepuphills
anddownhills.Thecumulativeelevationgainonthe10Kloopisabout486feet(sameforelevationloss),
andthe0.7/1.4mileloopsarenearlyflat.Thecoursewillbewell-markedwithsignsandflagging.There
will be water, electrolytes, and trail food at the start/finish line and two aid stations on the course at
miles1.5and4.5.

TheCraneisa1900-acreareapurchasedbytheCommonwealthfromtheCranebrothersandnamedin
memory of their mother. It is managed by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife and
popularamonghunters,birders,dog-walkers,equestrians,trailrunners,andmountainbikers,whohave
builtanintricatenetworkofsingle-tracktrails(andsomehidden“northshore”structures).Theeastern
part, near the start/finish area, is a patchwork of field and forest that has been managed to produce
ideal quail and woodcock habitat. It is flat and
sandy,theproductofbraidedoutwashstreams
from melting glaciers to the west. Once you
crosstherailroadtracks(stillusedbythetrash
train), you are on the outer part of the race
loop, which is hilly and boulder-strewn, and
traverses some of the highest terrain on Cape
Codat250feet.Thisisaportionoftheglacial
moraine that extends down the Cape, through
the Elizabeth Islands, and eventually to Block
Island and Fishers Island. As the glaciers
retreated, huge chunks of ice were stranded,
surrounded by deposits of boulders, sand, and clay. When the chunks melted, kettle holes formed.
These are round depressions 200 – 500 feet across and maybe 50 – 75 feet deep, some with vernal
pondsinthebottom.YouwillpassaniceoneyourleftafterthesummitofMtZig(whereanillegalswing
isinstalled,withaglimpseofBuzzardsBay),andyouwilldescendintothecornerofalargeoneright
beforethesteepclimbupMt.Otis.Ashortportionofthetrailrunsalonganesker,whichwasinitiallya
gravellystreambedrunningbeneathaglacier,butisnowalow,narrowridgelefthighanddrywhenthe
glacier melted. One of the unique features of this western section is the native pitch pine/oak forest
withaknee-highunderstoryofwoodybushes,andnobrambleorpoisonivy.Youmayalsoseeevidence
of the wells used to monitor the plume of contaminated groundwater that originated on the former
MassMilitaryReservation(nowJointBaseCapeCod).

TicksandLymeDisease
Spring is the height of tick season so disease-carrying and almost
invisible nymphs will be abundant. About half of adult Deer ticks on
CapeCodcarryLymedisease,andthereareahostofothertick-borne
diseases.Thisisaseriousconcern.Manyexpertsrecommendthatyou
wearinsectrepellentwithDEETand/orclothingsoakedinPermethrin
(notforuseonskin).Treatedclothingisavailablefrommostoutdoor
retailers, you can treat clothes yourself, or you can send your own
clothes to the Tick Encounter Resource Center (TERC) at Univ. of
Rhode Island (www.tickencounter.org) to be treated. After the race,
showerwithsoapassoonaspossible,anddryyourclothesathighheatfor20minutes.Havea(good)
friendcheckthosehard-to-seelocations.Ifyoufindatickembeddedonyou,removeitallwithpointed
tweezersbypullingitstraightoutwithoutsquishingit.(Donotusematches,petroleumjelly,nailpolish
remover,etc.)Savethetickinazip-lockbag(withalittlerubbingalcohol)foridentificationandtesting.

The Crane Wildlife Management Area is a popular spot for trail riding and off-leash dog activities,
includingtrainingforbirdhunting.Wehavecontactedlocalequestriananddogorganizationstoadvise
themoftherace,butyoumightencounterridersorhikerswithoff-leashdogs.Theyhavetherighttobe
there.Ifyoumeetahorsecomingtowardyou,greettherider,stop,stepoffthetrail,andwaitforitto
pass.Ifyouareapproachingitfrombehind,callouttotheriderwellinadvanceandaskadviceonhow
topass.Trynottosurpriseahorse,andwatchforchangingbehaviorasyouapproach.
Wehavegottengoodadvicefromalocaltraineronhowtohandleencounterswithdogs…atthisraceor
anywhere else. She reminds us that, no matter how well trained they are, dogs are dogs, and do not
have the same social norms that people, or even trail runners, do. Dogs display a range of
temperaments based on their social rank and the job they do for their group. Low-ranking dogs are
easiertohandle.Higher-rankingdogschallengeusmoreandmaynottoleratehumaninsubordinationor
incompetence.Whenmeetingadog,don’tjustasktheownerifitisoktotouchthedog,askthedog
too. Dogs need people to act friendly by stopping, removing hats and sunglasses, using high-pitched
enthusiasticvoices,andtappingthesideoflegstosimulateawaggingtails.Don’textendastiffhandor
fist…dogs don’t greet each other by extending paws. The dog may or may not be interested in
interacting,oritmayneedmoretime.Onceyouhavegreetedthedog(ornot),andarepastthedogand

(mostlyticks,butalsomayberabbits,quail,grouse,deer,andmountain-bikers).Therewillbetheusual
