Over-the-Counter Medicines Safe In Pregnancy Complaint Constipation Cough/Cold Cuts and Scrapes Dental Pain Medicine Add fiber supplements such as Metamucil®, Fibercon®, or Citrucel®. Increasing fiber intake via bran cereals, oatmeal, leafy greens, and prunes is another alternative. Increase your fluid intake. You may also add Colace® 100mg by mouth twice daily or Senakot® Robitussin®, Mucinex® Bacitracin®, Neosporin®, Polysporin® Tylenol®. Avoid aspirin products which could cause bleeding problems for mother and baby. Also avoid ibuprofen products, such as Advil®, Motrin® or Aleve® unless your doctor or nurse specifically recommends these drugs. Diarrhea Immodium® or Kaopectate®. Ensure adequate hydration by taking in plenty of clear liquids such as Gatorade, ginger ale, and jello. Call if symptoms persist over 24 hrs. DO NOT TAKE PEPTO-BISMOL®. Fever Take Tylenol®*, Extra-Strength Tylenol®*, or any aspirin-free pain reliever (acetaminophen). Avoid aspirin products, which could cause bleeding problems for mother and baby. Also avoid ibuprofen products, such as Advil®, Motrin® or Aleve® unless your doctor or nurse specifically recommends these drugs. If your temperature is over 101o F (38.3o C) call the clinic. Gas Headache Heartburn/ Indigestion Head Lice Hemorrhoids Gaviscon®, Mylicon®, Riopan® Tylenol®. Avoid aspirin products, which could cause bleeding problems for mother and baby. Also avoid ibuprofen products, such as Advil®, Motrin® or Aleve® unless your doctor or nurse specifically recommends these drugs. TUMS®, Rolaids®, Zantac®, Mylanta®, or Maalox®. Avoid fatty, fried, or spicy foods. Try eating small, frequent meals (5-6 times daily) rather than 3 large meals. Nix® Annusol HC®, Tucks®, Preparation H®, or Dermaplast®. Warm sitz baths for 30 minutes twice daily. Air dry and sleep without underwear. Avoid constipation and see recommendation above for constipation as this may exacerbate/worsen your hemorrhoids. Leg Cramps TUMS®, Vitamin with Potassium. Leg Swelling Elevate legs above waist, and lay on your left side. Wear well-fitting shoes and support hose. Muscle Aches Tylenol®. Avoid aspirin products, which could cause bleeding problems for mother and baby. Also avoid ibuprofen products, such as Advil®, Motrin® or Aleve® unless your doctor or nurse specifically recommends these drugs. Nausea/Vomiting Emetrol®. Stay hydrated and call the clinic if you are unable to tolerate fluids for over 8 hours. May also take Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) 10 to 24mg every 8 hours and doxylamine (Unisom® sleep taps) 25mg at bedtime. Note that B6 supplements are not FDA regulated; there is a prescription of the above combination available called Diclegis. Check dosage availability for vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) over the counter. Nosebleeds Painful urination Rash/ Itch Sleep Problems Seasonal Allergies Sinus Congestion Sore Throat Yeast Infection Apply ice pack to nose. Particularly in winter time with dryer air consider the use of a humidifier. Call the clinic Benadryl®, Aveeno®, Cortaid®. If you experience severe, whole-body itching in the late second or early third trimester, call the clinic. Benadryl®, Tylenol PM®, or Unisom®. Claritin®, Zyrtec®, Benadryl®, Mucinex® Tylenol® with Sudafed® (pseudoephedrine no phenylephrine) or Actifed®. You many also use a sinus rinse with a Netipot or saline nasal spray. Chloroseptic lozenges and sprays such as Cepacol®. Salt water gargles (one teaspoon of table salt in one quart of water). Call if associated temperature rises above 101o Fahrenheit or 38.3o Celsius.
