Breaking new ground
Our cover model, Dawn Heinemeyer, represents a refreshed direction for HERS. As we
put the fall issue to bed in August, we started thinking about this, our winter issue. With a
year of publication under our belts, what lessons had we learned? What did we want our
future to look like?
We’re on our way. Heinemeyer is a HERS reader, just like you. My two fellow cover model
search judges, Bill Giofu from Sophia Models and Karen Judge from Studio Gorgeous, knew
that her passion for life would translate well on the cover. It wasn’t an
easy decision, though. Close to 60 women entered our contest, and
you’ll likely see several in the magazine in the future, as there were
many who would be fabulous on our pages. Thank you to everyone
who entered and supported the contest; you’ve reaffirmed our focus
on celebrating real Calgary women.
There are changes inside the magazine, too. We’ve expanded our
content within three main areas: style, living and health. We want to
bring you fresh and relevant stories about everything that’s important
to you, so we’re including home decor, food, wine, travel and driving
in our lineup, along with the style, health and relationships content
you already know us for.
The word “style” is no accident, either, replacing “fashion.” Don’t get
us wrong — we adore fashion. But style is how we as real women translate the runways, so it
better describes what HERS is all about.
As always, let me know what you think. I’m at 403-235-8658 or yjeffery@calgaryherald.com,
and I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Church My Style: churchmystyle.com. Mark your calendars for 10
a.m. on February 5th, when Kim Flanagan and Jason Krell team up at
the Plaza Theatre to bring you the movie Miss Representation, which
has wowed both the Sundance Film Festival and Oprah Winfrey for
its portrayal of how mainstream media sees a woman’s value and
power in terms of youth, beauty and sexuality, rather than leadership. Expect a thought-provoking movie, coffee, snacks and a panel
discussion with local media, including HERS editor Yvonne Jeffery.
Role Mothers: rolemothers.ca. This winter, Market Mall
helped launch the Role Mothers resource, which
includes several celebrity moms from Calgary: Jane
Vernon, philanthropist and wife of former Calgary
Flame Mike Vernon; Cassie Campbell, Olympic
gold medal hockey player; and Lisa “Long Ball”
Vlooswyk, seven-time Canadian Women’s Long
Drive Champion. The resource aims to encourage families to weave the spirit of giving into
their daily lives as well as promote philanthropic
efforts in Calgary.
Openings
Esthetica Salon & Spa: estheticasalonandspa.com. The
southeast location of this spa, formerly on Bonaventure Drive
S.E., has reopened in a beautiful building at 611 Acadia Dr. S.E., complete with a living wall of plants to help provide a tranquil, healthy
environment. There’s also a second location in the Glenmore Landing
Shopping Centre.
Express: express.com. This chain of trend-based, stylish street wear
for men and women opened in Chinook Centre, Southcentre Mall and
Market Mall just in time for Christmas.
One Wellness & Spa: onewellnessandspa.com. Located within
Canmore’s Solara Resort, One Wellness takes the traditional spa
experience to a new level. Explore the personalized offering called
Pathways to Engagement, in which you choose a pathway that best
represents a current need: Sleep, Release, Clearing, Transition or Joy,
derived from coaching principles that support balancing of mind,
body, spirit and emotion.
The Wed Studio: wedstudio.com. A one-stop wedding shop is open
for business to serve Calgary’s betrothed, featuring an event planning
showroom where brides can enjoy a beverage while flipping through
collections of local vendor portfolios, digital photography galleries,
and video and audio libraries showing various wedding ideas. Visitors
can also learn more about local and surrounding area vendors, products and services. The concept is the dream child of Juliana Williams,
a local wedding invitation designer.
Chinook Centre
Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut Cococo: bernardcallebaut.com.
Calgary’s newest old chocolate factory is opening a new store in
Chinook Centre in time for the holidays. Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut came under new ownership this year, changing the name of the
company and opening several new locations across the city.
The CORE
The Core: coreshopping.ca. The Core had its official
renovation “reveal” with a stellar night of shopping on
November 30. The multi-million-dollar redesign has
been several years in the making, and is aimed at creating an urban shopping experience that reflects Calgary’s
energy: the centre boasts 150 stores, including a flagship
Holt Renfrew and Harry Rosen.
Market Mall
Ardene: ardene.com. This fashion-accessory chain relocated and expanded within the mall earlier this fall, so that
shoppers can enjoy even more on-trend, affordable jewelry and
accessories.
Bench: bench.ca. Whether you’re heading out to the mountains or
just looking for some cosy, stylish clothes to wear around Calgary,
Bench has a range of casual sportswear to choose from. The retailer
opened in Market Mall on December 1.
Michael Hill Jewellers: michaelhill.com. Looking for a great, big
engagement rock? Or maybe a beautiful bracelet or cufflinks for
someone this Christmas? Michael Hill Jewellers will be open for
business in the mall by mid-December. Whether your budget is in the
hundreds or thousands, Michael Hill should have a sparkly fit for your
pocketbook.
Pandora: pandora.net. Many who’ve opened Pandora’s box have become addicted to the charming line of jewelry. Founded in Denmark
in 1982, Pandora’s become a hit in North America as well. Pandora
arrives at Market Mall on December 15.

Winter warmth
The only way to truly enjoy the long winter months is to do it in
style. These Calgarians know how to liven up drab days with this
season’s must-have fashion essentials. BY MELISSA LAMPMAN
Karen Ball
Photo, colleen de neve
Executive director, Calgary 2012
With a little inspiration from television’s Mad Men, Ball
is taking her style back to the 1960s. For winter, she’ll
be donning vintage and retro-inspired pieces made
with heavier, tailored fabrics with a modern twist. One
of her favourites this season is a vintage three-quarter-length plaid jacket.
“I’m super interested in vintage pieces and mixing
them up,” Ball says, adding she picked up the 1970s
Toronto-made jacket in Calgary at Vintage Bliss.
In addition to its chic factor, she loves the jacket for
its versatility. “It looks contemporary, is the right kind
of weight and, with a scarf, can even be worn with
jeans if you’re just kicking around town,”
she says. “But you could also dress
it up; you could wear it in the
boardroom if you wanted to.”
Michele Durling

Owner, Blue Moon Accessories
Combining function and fashion, Durling is all about boots for the blustery
months. With a wide range of styles to choose from, she’s fallen head over heels
for a pair of tall black boots and topped them off with this season’s ultimate
style trend — the faux-fur boot cuff.
“I wear my boots with everything — leggings, skinny jeans and skirts,” Durling says, noting she bought this pair from Checkm8 Shoes, but added the
cuffs from her store nearby in Willow Park Village. “The cuffs come in different
colours and styles and totally change the look of your boots.”
As for whether function trumps funky, Durling focuses on both. “I work on my
feet all day, so good shoes are essential — I learned the hard way,” she says.

JOCELYN
ALICE
Q. You’re on a road-trip with your best friend.
Windows are down, wind’s blowing through your
hair. What are you singing at the top of your lungs?
A. ‘Something in the Water’ by Brooke Fraser. There’s
something about the chorus that sounds like something
a choir would sing. It sounds heavenly and happy. I’m
known for mostly enjoying sadder music, so when I find
happy sounds I resonate with, I’ll listen to them basically
a million times over.
Q. You were 16 when you had a big break: reality TV
show Pop Stars. What was that like?
A. Looking back, I wish I had made it more about the
relationships, less about the music. I was so focused,
so driven, I forgot I was there to experience myself as
well as something career oriented. It was a huge turning
point in my life. I wasn’t a writer yet, I hadn’t found my
voice, hadn’t found my message. I took two years off and
started writing. And it was like, that’s why I do it.
Q. What is your message?
A. I don’t think I’m quite to the core of that yet. I know
it has a lot to do with honesty and a lot to do with the
community of life and how we’re all connected and we’re
all here for a bigger purpose.
Q. Let’s talk style. Ever met a pattern you didn’t like?
A. I’m a big fan of pattern on pattern on pattern. I
usually go for big, loud things. I kind of want to give
people the freedom to be weirder.
Q. If you could buy a style “want,” what would it be?
A. A sequined blazer. Gold.
Q. Three items always in your handbag?
A. Blotting papers. My red lipstick. And my journal. I cannot leave the house without my journal.
Q. Who do you draw musical inspiration from?
A. Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse and Adele are pretty
much my top three. Pretty much obsessed. I’m finding the people that are the most free in their musical
expression are usually the ones I’m drawn to. If someone
is vulnerable in any way, I’m drawn to that.
Q. How would you describe your singing?
A. I usually call my singing grimy. It’s dirty, it’s soulful,
it’s grounded. I work very hard in yoga, in breathing, in
meditation, in finding my ground. I feel like my music
hits low and it hits hard and it’s definitely, definitely from
my heart.

Adding sparkle to the season
We’re always looking for effortless ways to glam it up as we rush from the office to the next style-packed evening
event. Right now, it’s all about ’60s chic — a la Mad Men and Pan Am — and glitter. We spoke to a beauty expert
and a trusted hair stylist about how to take our look from dull to dolled up. BY COLETTE DERWORIZ
“Nails are huge,” says Susie Gautreau, a cosmetics manager at
London Drugs in Calgary. “It goes in waves. It was all about lips, then
it was all about lashes. Now, it’s all about nails.”
Gautreau says it helps that manicures are easy to
do on our own.
The crackled look, although still popular with
teens and 20-somethings, has given way
to metallics and nail art. Italian company
Layla boasts a polish called Magneffect.
In metallic blues, greys and blacks, the
polish goes on smooth. Once you tip the
magnetic cap and hold it over a still-wet
nail, it creates an airbrushed effect (the
magnet reacts with iron particles in the
polish). Act fast, though: this polish
was flying off the shelves when
we visited.
Another option is Salon Effects
by Sally Hansen. Applied like
a sticker, the patterned nail
polish strips are so easy to
use you could probably put
them on in the back of a cab
on your way to the party.
Speaking of quick
fixes, I’ve noticed
wrinkles around my
eyes. Eeks! What’s an easy
way to get an instant lift?
Fortunately, you won’t have to book a Botox
treatment. A product dubbed freezeframe erases
wrinkles and frown lines instantly so your skin
feels tighter for hours.
“It’s magic,” says Gautreau. “It’s that instant
pick-me-up.”
No wrinkles? Lucky you. We also discovered a
tip to keep your face looking fresh all day long.
Gautreau recommends a primer after moisturizer. Available in many brands, the primer helps
your makeup stay put. “Because it’s a base, it
will fill your pores and your lines,” she says.
If my makeup is on for the day, I can
easily take my look from day to night
for the party after work, right?
Right. If you want to play up your eyes, add a darker
liner. If you want to glam it up even more, add a thin
line of glitter eye liner above your eyelashes. Try Lise
Watier’s Eye Glitter Liner.
“Her liners are the best,” says Gautreau, noting
they come in almost every colour, including purple,
cognac and silver.
If you deepen your eyes, though, keep your lips
neutral.
What if I want to play up my lips
instead?
Go with red. “If you don’t have time to do your
eyes, you have time to slip on a coat of red
lipstick,” says Gautreau, adding “be prepared to
be noticed.”
The style is reminiscent of the ’60s glam showcased on Mad Men, where the ladies wear nude
makeup and bright, bold lips.
Mad Men’s reach seems to have
gone beyond television ratings into the world of fashion,
makeup and hair. Are there
ways I can glam up my hair,
’60s style?
Absolutely, says Candice Girard, a hair stylist at Pure.Form Salon/Studio D. Girard says
there’s a lot of volume and curls, similar to
the styles on Mad Men and this year’s ’60s
hit drama, Pan Am. Most of all, have fun
with it.

BY THERESA TAYLER, PHOTOS, LEAH HENNEL
’Tis the season for sweaters, layers, blazers and boots. The best news for this coziest of
times? Bright colours are here to stay through the cold snap, says Suzanne Timmins,
vice-president of fashion direction for The Bay.
Her Top 5 style trends include Vivid Brights, with vibrant shades of magenta, peacock blues
and teals, plus floral prints; the Mods, centred on colour-blocking, pairing solid colours with
straight cuts such as shift dresses and pencil skirts; the Seventies, where designers are
mixing prints such as paisley within the same colour families; Man Up, or taking the best of
his wardrobe and making it yours, in tailored tux jackets, blazers and pantsuits; and Boho
Folk, combining gypsy-edged style and accessories with warm, woollen knits and furs.
We all love to be on top of the latest styles without being a slave to fashion. These winter
looks from Calgary experts will have you looking both classic and original, so why not take
a few of your favourite elements and make them your own? In the words of Coco Chanel,
fashion fades — only style remains the same.

Here’s one option for staying both warm and stylish

When it’s minus 30, looking great while slogging to the office
or stepping out for weekend activities drops off our priority list
(hey, we know — we’ve been there). Luckily, we’ve found some
super choices for staying both toasty and chic. The coat is a
hybrid between the classic puffer and duffle, and the luxury of
a fur-trimmed hood means you’re set for both work and play.
The shoes are a great combination of warm winter footwear and
the ever-reliable sneaker. Top yourself off with a great scarf, a
slouchy cashmere tuque and classic wool mittens, and you’ll be
walking out the door in great winter style. And if all else fails?
We’re big fans of popping hand and foot warmers into mitts
and boots. Coat, $740, and scarf, $95, FROM m0851;

COOKING FOR
YOUR SOUL
The kitchen is a place of nourishment, and not just for the food it
produces. A much-loved recipe, a successful new dish, a chance to lick
the beaters can all bring joy. Being in the kitchen nourishes the spirit.
For me, it’s having music playing and dancing around with spatula in
hand, stirring this and tasting that, that brings joy to cooking — something that can be lost amid the daily grind of producing daily dinners.
It’s about reclaiming the kitchen as a place to enjoy simply being in
the moment, trying something fun or challenging — and recognizing
pizza delivery is just a phone call away. Sometimes we need to roll up
our sleeves, pour a glass of wine and face our food fears: like mastering souffle, that quintessential French dish with its puffed, gold-tinged
crown. There are several steps to putting together this dish, but,
broken down, they are basic skills that lead to something extraordinary.
And if it doesn’t work? Just pour some wine and grab the
takeout menu. STory AND photo by Gwendolyn Richards

French Vinaigrette
Cheese Souffle
Adapted from Dorie Greenspan’s Around My French Table.
The original recipe calls for 1/4 cup (50 mL) bread crumbs to
coat the butter-lined souffle dish, but I used grated Parmesan instead to add even more flavour.
INGRED IENTS
¼ cup
(50 mL) grated Parmesan
2 ½ cups
(625 mL) whole milk
(homogenized)
3 tbsp
(50 mL) unsalted butter
6 tbsp
(85 mL) all-purpose flour
salt and freshly ground pepper
freshly grated nutmeg
6 large eggs, separated
½ lb
(250 g) cheese, such as Gruyere, Emmenthal or Swiss, grated
Position a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat
the oven to 400°F (200°C). Give the inside of a 6 to 7-cup
souffle mould a thick coating of butter. Dust with Parmesan,
tap out the excess, and set aside. Line a baking sheet with a
silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
Bring the milk to a boil in a medium saucepan; set it aside.
Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
Stir in the flour and cook this mixture (a roux) for about 2
minutes, just long enough to rid the flour of its raw taste but
not colour it. Stirring with a whisk, slowly blend in the hot
milk. When all the milk is incorporated and the bechamel is
smooth, cook, stirring, for another 8 to 10 minutes, or until
the sauce thickens — the whisk will leave tracks. Season
the sauce generously with salt and white pepper and a little
nutmeg. Pull the pan from the heat and pour the bechamel
through a fine-mesh strainer into a medium bowl; allow the
bechamel to cool for about 10 minutes.
One by one, whisk the yolks into the bechamel, then stir
in the grated cheese.
Working in a mixer fitted with the whisk attachment or in a
bowl with a hand-held mixer, whip the egg whites until they
hold firm, shiny peaks. Stir one quarter of the whites into the
bechamel to lighten it, then use a rubber spatula to gently
fold in the remaining whites. Delicately turn the souffle
batter into the prepared mould, put the mould on the baking
sheet and slide the sheet into the oven.
Bake the souffle for 40 to 50 minutes, or until it is well
risen, golden brown and firm to the touch but still jiggly at
the centre. If, after 25 to 30 minutes (don’t even think about
opening the oven door before the 25-minute mark), the
souffle is browning too much, carefully open the door and
gently slide a piece of aluminum foil over the top. Serve immediately. Serves 4.
A nice green salad with a sharp vinaigrette will go nicely with the rich souffle. This
one is from Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
INGRE DIENTS
1 ½ tsp to 2 tbsp (7.5 to 25 mL) wine vinegar or a mixture
of vinegar and lemon juice
1/8 tsp
(0.5 mL) salt
¼ tsp
(1 mL) dry mustard, optional
6 tbsp
(85 mL) olive oil
big pinch of black pepper
1 to 2 tbsp
(15 to 25 mL) minced green herbs, such as parsley, chives, tarragon and basil or a pinch of dried herbs, optional
Beat together the vinegar, salt and mustard, if using, until the salt is dissolved, then
beat in the oil by droplets and season with pepper. Or, place all ingredients in a
screw-top jar and shake vigorously for 30 seconds to blend thoroughly. Stir in herbs,
if using, and correct seasoning just before dressing the salad.
Wine pairings
Vin Room wine director Erika Tocco has come up with three wines to match the rich
and light souffle, playing off the savoury flavour of the Gruyere.
2009 Domaine Gerard Fiou Sancerre (Loire Valley, France).
The acid of the wine will cut through the richness of the cheese and the
savoury green herb notes would complement it. This wine has substantial
fruit to stand up to the strong cheese flavours.
2008 Heinrich St. Laurent (Burgenland, Austria). Good, aged
Swiss Gruyere displays notes of earthiness and nuttiness, which would
complement the earthy notes mimicked in this Austrian red, its bright
berry fruit on the palate combining with a crisp mouthwatering acidity.
The fruit would balance the creamy fullness of the souffle.
2008 Domaine Weinbach Pinot Blanc (Alsace, France).
This is a classic sweet meets sweet pairing. The rich texture of this wine
would balance the savoury cheese components. Honey and tropical notes
complement the cheese; don’t be fooled by the sweetness — this wine
has strong acid that prevents the richness from becoming boring and
flabby in the mouth. It would brighten the whole dish.

finding your bliss
It hit me about the same time I saw the ocean for the first time at the Melia Las Dunas hotel. Having walked
less than five minutes from my bed to the beach, I realized that for the next five days, the word “should” could
play no part in my vocabulary. STORY AND PHOTO By YVONNE JEFFERY
Unpacking my suitcase from the late evening
arrival could wait. Exploring the hotel grounds
could wait. Checking my e-mail could wait all
week long. Because in front of me, the Atlantic
stretched out in the impossibly blue hue of the
tropics. As far as I could see, white sandy beach
lined the ocean, punctuated by lounge chairs,
grass-roofed shade umbrella, and the bright
colours of small Hobie catamaran sails.
It was everything I’d been looking for a few
days earlier, when my calendar had revealed a
winter getaway possibility. I wasn’t choosy, but
I had a few wishes: safety, because I was travelling alone. All-inclusive, because I needed this
to be easy. At least four-star-rated, for comfort.
Warm, for the feel of the sun on my face. And
beach-side, because I had a stack of books and
wanted nothing more than to sit, watch the
waves, read and fall asleep. An online search
revealed a week-long,
all-inclusive sojourn on Cayo
Santa Maria.
Located
IF YOU GO: Cuba has loosened
up previous restrictions, so you may
find your cellphone works (watch
the roaming charges). But be sure to
bring with you anything you’ll need,
especially in the way of personal
toiletries, because there’s no guarantee the resort shop can stock them.
When heading south, definitely opt
for as many hotel stars as your budget can afford: four at a minimum. In
Cuba, expect plenty of food, but likely
fewer fresh fruit and veg than you’d
like. For more information, visit
gocuba.ca; cayosantamaria.info
off the northern coastline of Cuba, it’s part of
a small chain of sand-rich, breeze-touched islands. Planes touch down in the central town of
Santa Clara, a 90-minute coach ride to the hotel.
The route winds through small towns bordered
by sugar cane fields and along a 48-kilometre
causeway that lets the ocean run beneath it, allowing the water to feed the mangrove swamps.
As soon as I found the beach, any lingering
doubts about travelling alone disappeared.
Eventually, I even unpacked and tracked down
where to find the lattes and the ice cream bar.
I met fellow travellers, including some from
Calgary. I also discovered the resort’s activity
and excursion options.
A daytrip by plane to Havana was an easy
choice — I had my first Cuban mojito at the
rooftop bar of the Hotel Ambos Mundos, where
room 511 is a mini Ernest Hemingway museum.
The city gave me a welcome dose of culture,
stuck as it is between the 1960s and the 21st
century, with horse-drawn carts and pedalpowered taxis, Spanish-influenced wrought iron
balconies and revolutionary graffiti.
Diving, meanwhile, offered a little adventure.
After a morning’s instruction in the hotel pool, I
bobbed out to the dive site. One instructor took
three of us novices on a shallow dive to explore
a sandy, coral-strewn bottom where small,
brightly coloured fish darted about.
From the beach to the city to the water, it was
a blissed-out week without a single “should.” n

LIVING
her ride
turning over a new leaf
I’m not really a car person. Sure, I like nice things that look good, but a car isn’t one of my accessories or an extension of my ego. So when I was asked to test drive the new Nissan LEAF, North America’s first mass-marketed
electric car, I was intrigued, but not overly excited. A car’s a car, right? By Jody Robbins
The Style: A sleek, stylish exterior, with
Photos, Gavin Young
funky headlights and a sloped nose, give the
LEAF a zippy race car look. You’d never tell
it’s the tree-hugger’s car of choice unless you
looked hard (and in vain) for the gas cap.
Nor does it have the look and feel of a family
sedan, though it’s certainly as spacious as one,
seating four adults comfortably or five close
friends. What women really want, of course, is
ample storage space (you’ve seen our closets)
and the LEAF delivers on this as much as any
larger small car can. The interior isn’t swish, but
with kids, shopping and the mother-in-law, who
needs to impress?
The Drive: No moving parts (like those
annoying engines and transmissions) means
no vibration. It’s hard to tell the LEAF has even
started. Less background noise and shaking
made for a calmer ride and, considering how
much bumper-to-bumper time we spend in our
cars, this was impressive.
Smooth is one thing, but the gal’s also got
pep, accelerating surprisingly fast. I expected
an eco-car to be a lemon like my enviro-dryer,
but it picks up right away and has no trouble
overtaking cars up hills. Easy to handle and,
more importantly, a breeze to park, the LEAF
compensates for larger gas guzzlers that spill
over their allotted lanes.
The Eco-factor: It seems like a great
means to an end, but the big question is: how
far is that end? Running for 160 kilometres fully
charged, it comes with its own charge pack, taking 17 hours to recharge, plugged into a regular
outlet. A separate 240-volt charging dock is available for a shorter, seven-hour charge.
The other big question: are owners setting
themselves up for massive electric bills? Not
is and the oomph factor. Saving the earth is a
lovely bonus, though.
The Verdict: The LEAF ticks off many
even close. Expect a $2.25 increase in electricity
cost per full charge.
Boasting the usual accessories, right down to a
heated steering wheel, there’s also a nifty Energy
Info Meter that displays how climate control and
other driving inefficiencies affect your range. It’s
nice to hear that 99 per cent of the car is
recyclable and the seats are made out of old
water bottles, but I’m still more impressed with
how much money I’d save on gas, how quiet it
items you might be looking for: it’s cute, quiet,
small yet spacious, and has that feel-good factor. If you like instant acceleration and zipping
around the city in a punchy car that’s sure to be
the talk of the town, then the LEAF is for you.
On the pragmatic side, charging every couple
of nights shouldn’t be a big deal, but for some,
the long charge time could be a drawback. And,
at $38,000, it’s not for the gal on a budget, despite
how much you’d save on gas.
But as the test drive made me realize, the
LEAF is a pretty cool accessory. I wouldn’t even
mind it being an extension of my ego — the part
that says I’m practical and I care. And occasionally, like to be noticed. n

relationships

It’s easy to be romantic when spring is in the air, but when the weather
outside turns terrible, it’s hard to resist the urge to hibernate. “It’s important for couples to carve out time to connect with each other, despite
the busyness of the season,” says Amy Marshall, founder of The Relationship Resource (therelationshipresource.ca). Proving you can be both
naughty and nice, try heating things up in the cool months ahead with
these romantic excursions. BY JODY ROBBINS
THE GETAWAY: Ranked second top Canadian resort by Conde
Nast Traveler’s 2011 Readers Choice Awards, Emerald Lake Lodge (crmr.
com/emerald) provides the perfect escape for those wanting to get away
from it all. This secluded hideaway located just 20 minutes west of Lake
Louise offers plenty of cross-country trails to explore, and a portion of the
lake is cleared for ice skating. After all that fresh mountain air, you’ll welcome the intimate warmth of the charming rooms, complete with a woodburning fireplace. You won’t even notice there isn’t a TV and, considering
your mission, that shouldn’t be surprising.

TAKE IT OUTSIDE: Skating offers
a great opportunity to stumble and get
caught by someone you’re trying to get
close to. In fact, the wobblier you are, the
better. The most romantic spot in the city
for ice time has to be Bowness Park. After a
whirl around the open pond and down the
frozen river, stop for hot chocolate at ParkSide Cafe. Or, bring your own Thermos and
marshmallows to roast over the open fire
pits embedded in the ice. And don’t forget
the proper accoutrements for snowman
building.
Gliding together through snowy woods
on cross-country skis is one amorous
activity that also kick-starts your heart rate.
Popular routes can be found at Pocaterra in
Peter Lougheed Provincial Park and at the
Canmore Nordic Centre. Closer to home,
Canada Olympic Park and Shaganappi
Golf Course offer groomed trails. Skis,
snowshoes and skates can be rented from
the Outdoor Centre at the University of
Calgary (www.calgaryoutdoorcentre.ca).

packing provisions seem like too much
work, duck into River Cafe (river-cafe.com)
for a cosy, fireside meal.
INDULGENCES: With all the fuss
around entertaining, last-minute shopping and an onslaught of visiting relatives,
sometimes a little pick-me-up is in order.
It’s easy to get into the spirit of the season

Maple Cinnamon Protein Pancakes
with Glazed Apples
Nutritionist Leanne Vogel created a winter pancake recipe specifically for HERS readers. Gluten-free and vegan-friendly, these pancakes will keep you full longer with their
high fibre, protein and complex carbohydrate content.
FOR THE G LA Z E
1
gala apple, sliced
¼ cup (50 mL) water
1 tsp (5 mL) minute tapioca
1 tsp (5 mL) lemon juice
¼ tsp (1 mL) ground cinnamon
FOR THE PANCA K E S
2/3 cup (175 mL) chickpea flour
1 tbsp (15 mL) chia seeds (optional)
1 tsp (5 mL) gluten-free baking powder
1 tsp (5 mL) ground cinnamon
¼ cup (50 mL) egg whites or 1 flax egg (1 tbsp/15 mL freshly ground flax plus 3 tbsp/50 mL water)
¼ cup (50 mL) non-dairy milk such as unsweetened almond milk
2 tbsp (25 mL) water
1 tbsp (15 mL) maple syrup
½ tsp (2 mL) pure vanilla extract
To make the glaze, place
sliced apple and water in a
small saucepan. Cover and
bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a
simmer and cook for 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, mix remaining
glaze ingredients in a small
bowl. Add this mixture to the
apples and stir to coat. Return
the lid and simmer for 10 minutes. Once complete, remove
from heat.
Winterize
your pantry
During the winter, our bodies crave warm foods
that can stimulate heat and increase energy, says
Leanne Vogel, a Calgary-based holistic nutritionist and food blogger. It’s a good time to focus on
foods that strengthen the immune system. Vogel
suggests adding these flu-fighting items to your
grocery list this season:
Tuna and Brazil nuts. Both contain selenium,
which inhibits the growth of cancer-causing free
radicals.
Foods containing vitamin C, such as red peppers, Swiss chard and kiwis. Vogel also recommends Emergen-C drink mixes. “They’re great on
airplanes.”
Healthy fats such as olives, olive oil, avocado and
nuts. These fats help the body absorb nutrients,
particularly from fat-soluble leafy vegetables. Always include some healthy fats in your salads.
Lentils, beans, black-eyed peas, garbanzo and
kidney beans. These foods offer protein and fibre,
and are great for warmth when cooked in a hearty
stew or chili.
Zinc. A review published last winter
showed that when people took zinc
lozenges, tablets or syrups within
24 hours of their first signs of
cold, they cut the length of their
cold by a day and reduced the
severity of symptoms.
For more tips, check out
Vogel’s blog at healthfulpursuit.com.
To make pancakes, combine
chickpea flour, chia seeds,
baking powder and cinnamon in
a medium bowl. Mix with a fork to break up the flour. Add the wet ingredients to the
flour mixture and stir until just mixed. Set aside.
Preheat a small non-stick pan on medium-low heat for 2 minutes. Pour 1/3 of the
mixture into the preheated pan. Allow the first side to cook for 2-3 minutes or until
bubbles form and the edges begin to golden. Flip and cook for another 1 to 2 minutes.
Place completed pancake on cooling rack and repeat with remaining batter. Serve
with glazed apples, coconut oil, maple syrup or nut butter. Serves 2: makes 3 to 4
pancakes and 3/4 cup glazed apples.

How to wash your hands
Winter Gear Guide
Washing your hands properly is the most effective way to protect yourself from colds. Pretty
simple, right? Not so much. Most people don’t
clean their hands correctly. Follow these tricks
from Health Canada to make sure you’re thoroughly ridding your hands of germs.
A long, cold winter ahead? Not a problem with these cool seasonal finds.
Use regular soap, not antibacterial soaps. The
latter destroy good bacteria as well as bad, and
add to antibiotic resistance.
Remove any jewelry, including rings and bracelets, before you wash.
Use warm water and soap, lathering all surfaces, the nails and between fingers for at least
15 seconds. That’s the length of one rendition of
Happy Birthday.
Wipe and dry your hands gently with a
towel. Drying them vigorously can damage skin.
In public bathrooms, turn off the tap using a paper towel. Use the same towel to open the door.
If you have sensitive skin or wash your hands
frequently, considering using an alcohol-based
rub instead.
If you use bar soap at home, keep it in a selfdraining holder that can be cleaned before a new
bar is added.
Don’t use a single cloth to wash a group of
children’s hands.
Rossignol Vita Sensor2 90 boots (left): An extra-wide opening in
the foot makes this boot easy to step into and the cuff is designed
to accommodate a woman’s lower calf muscle. Plus, you’ll stay
warmer with its faux fur liner. Available at the Ski Cellar; suggested
retail price $449.
Rossignol Attraxion VIII Echo skis: The first eco-friendly women’s
ski on the market, the Echo is made from natural and recycled fibres
with minimal use of ink. Just as important, it’s great on snow.
Designed for advanced skiers, it’s a responsive and grippy ski.
Available at the Ski Cellar, with a suggested retail price of
$799.99, including binding.
Black Diamond Prodigy gloves: This glove gets plenty of
recommendations from backcountry die-hards. It’s ultra warm and waterproof, so great
for skiing or shovelling on powder days. Available at Mountain Equipment Co-op, $114.
Salomon Vitane 8 Classic Pilot boots: Designed specifically for a woman’s foot, this
cross-country ski boot is comfy, warm (thanks to a thermofoam liner), flexible in the
forefoot and easy to lace up. Available at Mountain Equipment Co-op, $177.
Surviving Winter Pregnancy
More babies will be born in Calgary this year than any year before. That means
record numbers of pregnant women in the city, too. We asked Maeve O’Beirne, an
associate professor of family medicine at the University of Calgary, for her advice
on how to have a healthy winter pregnancy.
“Pregnant women do have higher risks in winter,” she tells us, adding that
during last year’s H1N1 pandemic, women were more likely to develop complications
from the virus than other adults, for reasons that remain unknown.
As well, pregnant women are more likely to fall in winter. Their centre of
gravity has shifted and, often, they can’t see their feet. Still, it’s important to get
outside and enjoy the fresh air and sunlight. Sunlight may reduce sleep problems
common with pregnancy, O’Beirne says.
But choose winter sports cautiously. By the second trimester, a woman’s ligaments relax and can easily overextend. So don’t try new sports or a new intensive
exercise regimen, she says. But “it is an important time to continue an already existing regimen or start a regular program that includes walking, biking or swimming.”
Shopping malls are good option for walking on icy days, but — unexpectedly
— O’Beirne doesn’t forbid downhill skiing. She advises pregnant downhillers to ski
below their usual skill level and stay away from crowded areas. Cross-country skiing
“is excellent exercise in pregnancy,” but you should avoid high-speed downhill areas.
O’Beirne also warns that if you have an Rh-negative blood type and you fall or
get into a car accident, you should contact your healthcare provider, because the
mother’s and baby’s bloods could mix if the placenta is damaged.

THE
JUGGLING
ACT
Jessica Harcombe Fleming is fit, fashionable, happy and grounded.
The 33-year-old, who works in media relations for Travel Alberta, deftly
balances a career and family time with her husband, baby daughter and
14-year-old stepson. The secret to her juggling act? Being organized
and prioritizing self care. Though she’s sometimes too tired to hit the
pathways or not in the mood for nookie, more often than not she’ll show
up for her date with the yoga mat or her husband.
“The reality is, things come up,” says Harcombe Fleming. “But if you
intend to do it, 75 per cent of the time, it will happen.”

“When you agree as a couple that a certain time frame will be
set aside for sex, many positive things come out of it. Research
shows that couples who schedule sex have better sex more
often. The reason is simple: busy, tired moms anticipate it’s
going to happen.” trina read, HUMAN Sexuality expert
Scheduling me-time is one of the things
Calgary-based life coach and speaker
Michelle Cederberg encourages her clients
to do. “Mom needs to take care of
herself to keep her physical and emotional
energy up,” she says. Here are five
self-care items busy moms should slot time
for:
“Do whatever’s going to be easiest,” she
says. “It’s not so important what you do,
it’s that you do. Consistency is key.” Try
scheduling three exercise “dates” a week
until it becomes part of your routine. And
incorporate activity into the everyday: walk
to the corner store, take the stairs and make
kids’ play more active.
1. Make time for me-time
3. Plan your meals
“Put your own oxygen mask on first —
that’s what we have to remember as moms.
We get better at what we do with our kids
and with our family when we feel energized,” says registered psychologist Kimberley Eckert, founder of Eckert Psychology
and Education Centre in Calgary. “Self-care
is the No. 1 way to stay patient.”
Eckert defines self care as anything that
fortifies the mind, body or soul: small selfacts that help you nourish yourself in some
way, such as reading, keeping a gratitude
journal, taking a bubble bath, meeting a
friend for lunch or going for a hike. Try
scheduling a half-hour of self care daily,
when the kids are in school, napping or after
dinner. Call it “Mommy’s recharging time.”
Instead of waiting until the kids ask what’s
for dinner, ask yourself the day before or the
morning of the meal, says registered
dietitian Andrea Holwegner, owner of
Health Stand Nutrition.
“That single question sets the stage for
how your day is going to go.”
Sure, it takes 30 minutes to come up with
some kid-approved recipes and assemble a
shopping list, but having a meal plan will reduce stress and help you eat better, she says.
Grocery shop once a week, to save time
and money, and chill out — you don’t need
gourmet fare every night (cereal for dinner
works in moderation).
2. Get moving
Taking a short walk or going for a bike
ride with your kids is a good place to start,
says Cederberg.
4. Revision your wardrobe
Calgary stylist Kim Flanagan has carved a
career out of helping moms get their fashion
groove back. So, why do clothes matter in
a world of spit-ups and diaper blow-outs?
Because a sexy pair of designer jeans might
motivate you to stay in shape, which will
keep your diet on track, which will help you
feel healthy and sexy, which will lead to, um,
you know. It’s all interrelated, she says. So
schedule a shopping trip for yourself, stat.
But first, go through your closet and give
away items you no longer wear or that don’t
fit. “You need clothes that reflect you, now.
Not you, 20 years ago,” says Flanagan.
5. Schedule time for sex
Shouldn’t sex be spontaneous and passionate? Not necessarily, says human sexuality
expert and author Trina Read.
“Spontaneous sex in a long-term relationship
often turns into ‘feeling pounced upon’ and
it does more to damage a relationship,” says
Read. “When you agree as a couple that a certain time frame will be set aside for sex, many
positive things come out of it. Research shows
that couples who schedule sex have better sex
more often. The reason is simple: busy, tired
moms anticipate it’s going to happen.”
Read also encourages parents to make time
for intimacy. “A partnership can survive without sex, but it cannot survive without feeling
intimately connected,” she says. Try taking a
bath together without the expectation it will
end in the “main attraction,” and if sex is on
the table, start with 10 to 15 minutes of foreplay
so mom has time to transition from mommy
brain to sexy body. n

Calgary spas are putting the eco into friendly
By Michelle Magnan
Misha Michelle Lozada’s mission is simple: “To transform lives through the healing powers
of human touch, movement, art and nutrition.” Sounds lofty, but she’s on top of it. Lozada
and her partner, Philip Lopez, run Leela Eco Spa and Studio, a cozy Bridgeland spot that
offers everything from yoga classes to treatments such as hot stone massages and facials.
Their dedication to eco-friendly practices is impressive, too, and goes far beyond using
organic products and recycling. Leela is located in Western Canada’s first eco-certified
building — the walls were built with recycled drywall and tenants use rainwater for the toilet
system, as quick examples — and the spa supports local businesses and artists as much as
possible. That explains the “eco” portion of their name. But what about “Leela”? It means
‘divine play’ in Sanskrit,” says Lozada.
I recently stopped by Leela for some divine play of my own. My experience began with
a session in the infrared sauna — something I’d never tried before. The heat, designed to
warm you from the inside out, was luxurious, and the Norah Jones tracks playing in the
background were a welcome change from typical spa fare. Post-sauna, I felt ready for some
shut-eye. Which corresponded well with my next activity: a massage. Lozada worked my
shoulders into a relaxed state — not an easy feat — and then sent in a teammate to administer a facial. When I left, Lozada said I looked “massage drunk.” True — I was blissed out
to the max. Next time, I’ll try to incorporate a yoga class, too. The stretching will do these
shoulders good. (849 1st Ave. N.E., 403-258-3268, leelaecospa.com)

Many Calgary spas are dedicated to enviro-friendly practices. The following are just a few services to appeal to the green girl in you. BY MICHELLE MAGNAN
A HEALTHY GLOW
In mid-October, Karma Salon and Spa reopened their doors to reveal a 3,000-square-foot location in the city’s northwest. One of their treatments, the Equavie Eco Escape Facial ($75), sounds right up our eco alley. With organic fruit
products such as papaya enzymes, as well as a herbal serum and buckwheat mask during this facial, emerging with a
natural glow is inevitable. (3630 Brentwood Rd. N.W., 403-282-2485, karmasalonandspa.ca)
Tantalizing fingertips
Work downtown? Consider ducking into Soma Advanced Skin and Body Therapy for a quick
escape. Located in the same building as Murrieta’s Bar and Grill, Soma offers spa treatments
designed for busy people in the city’s core. We like the sound of the Yonka Pedicure ($85
for 60 minutes; $60 for 30 minutes), which uses eco-friendly polish. After application, the
polish is cured with a UV light to give it mega-staying power. (100, 808 1st St. S.W., 403984-3887, somacalgary.com)
Seeing green
Aside from offering fantastic services, Riverside Spa is always searching for ways to
lighten its environmental footprint. It uses wind power by Bullfrog, as well as nontoxic and biodegradable cleaning products, and supports other local companies, like
the Rocky Mountain Soap Company. Very good steps, indeed. We think we’ll step our
way into the spa for something luxurious, like the Blueberry Soy Body Wrap ($150).
(110 Point McKay Cres. N.W., 403-270-7500, riversidespa.ca)
Eco friendly at home
If you’d love to treat yourself at home, consider dry brushing. Leela Eco Spa’s Misha Michelle Lozada says it’s an
easy, affordable and effective ritual to stimulate the skin. You’ll banish dead skin cells and increase circulation,
she says, which will leave you glow-y and smooth. All you need is a body brush, which you can find at health and
beauty stores, and a pure plant oil, like avocado, coconut, olive or sesame.
The treatment will only take about five minutes. It’s best, however, to plan for this about 20 to 30 minutes before
you shower, to give the oil time to work its magic before you clean yourself off. As for how to brush, start at your
feet, says Lozada, and always brush toward your heart. Try circular or long strokes — whatever feels best — and go
easy on sensitive parts. (When you get to the shoulder and chest area, brush downward, because you’ll be above
the heart.) Next up is the most luxurious bit: massage your choice of plant oil into the skin you’ve just brushed.
Relax for a while and then jump in the shower to rinse everything off. You’ll emerge a divine being, ready for play.

“I love looking through the magazines, but
I pick and choose from trends — I pick the
aspects of the trends that are right for me,”
Sherven says.
She describes her style as casual, but well
put together and she loves working an outfit
around a great pair of boots or heels.
Sherven is wearing a classic leather jacket she
says she’s had in her closet for years, J Brand
turquoise corduroy pants, a jean shirt from Joe
Fresh, leather boots from Winners (not shown)
and a scarf she bought while roaming the
streets of Turkey on a vacation with her hubby.
That’s definitely the way to do it: mix higher
and lower end items with classic pieces and
accessories that mean something to you, and
you’ve got a great look.
