STATE PARKS
Father Hennepin State Park is
located just minutes from Isle on
the shores of Lake Mille Lacs.
Group camps and 103 individual camping sites dot the
park. Visitors will find two boat
launches, a fishing pier, swimming beach and hiking trails.
In winter, the park is open for
cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Call 320-676-8763 for
more information.

a casino, and several golf courses. If recreational trails
are more your style, the Mille Lacs area has trails for
hikers, bikers, ATVers, snowmobilers – rollerbladers.

Mille Lacs Kathio State Park is
located northwest of Onamia.
The park’s 10,000+ acres of
lakes and abrupt hills is the lush
setting for woods, wildflowers,
creeks, ponds, the beautiful
Rum River.
In summer the park features
70 semi-modern campsites, a
primitive group camp, canoe
and boat launch (with rentals),
a swimming beach, fishing, 35
miles of hiking trails, and 27
miles of horseback riding trails.
In the winter, visitors can
explore snowmobile cross-country and snowshoeing trails, too.
The park also features an
Interpretive Center, a naturalist and a 100-foot observation

Mille Lacs Lake isn't your ordinary lake. It's one of
the largest lakes in Minnesota – 132,510 acres and 76
miles of shoreline. And there's more than just walleyes
around here. Beneath Mille Lacs’ surface – and most
of the other 200 area lakes – are 40 fish species,
including smallmouth bass, largemouth bass,
northern, perch, crappie and muskie.
Another great thing about Mille Lacs Lake – the
fishing fun doesn't have to end when the lake freezes
over. Many area resorts offer completely outfitted ice
houses in winter! (See “Winter” on page 18).

catch up to slower drivers, give

influence" is just as strict as
when driving a car.

and some of the best ice fishing anywhere, this area is a haven
for winter sports fanatics. You can snowmobile, ice fish, skate,
XC ski or snowshoe in this white-washed paradise.

Frostbite Flats, it’s re-created each winter when thousands of
dedicated anglers place their temporary fish houses – many
complete with cook stoves, bunk beds and even toilets (!)
– on the ice-covered lake. Then they settle in for a winter
of ice fishing fun.

winter ritual of catching fish through the ice, surrounded by
