While Bishop has the largest population and is the only incorporated city in Inyo County, it definitely maintains a friendly home-town atmosphere. Just under 4,000 people reside within the 1.8 square miles of the city limits and another 5,000 or so live in the outlying areas. 2 C O U N T Y P I NE B I S H O P Bishop is a terrific place to call “home” while exploring the Eastern Sierra. Lodging establishments abound, with about 800 rooms ranging from quite luxurious to rustic cabins. Campgrounds operated by USFS, Inyo County and private owners are also abundant in the area. In Bishop, you’ll find great restaurants to suit any taste, including American Fare, Mexican Cuisine, plus Chinese and Japanese delicacies. Highway 395 is Bishop’s Main Street, featuring several art galleries and unique retail shops. To truly enjoy Bishop, you really must take a side trip off Main Street. Try Line Street (aka Highway 168). To the East on Line Street, you’ll cross the Owens River and to the West, you’ll find the glorious mountains, lakes and streams of Bishop Creek Canyon. In the summer months, Lake Sabrina, South Lake and North Lake offer world-class trout fishing. In the fall, the Aspens and Cottonwoods turn fiery colors of yellow, orange and V A L L E Y I N Y O red. Photography buffs from around the world visit the canyon in hopes of capturing just a shot or two of the splendor. sphere surrounded by public lands,” stated Bill Karr, editor of Western Outdoor News. Columnist and senior research editor Kathie Morgan is quoted as simply remarking, “Breathtaking scenery.” D E A T H G U I D E In the center of town, be sure to visit the Bishop City Park with several acres of beautifully maintained grass, shade trees and flowers – a great place to picnic! The Bishop City Park features a public swimming pool, skate & bike park, tennis courts, baseball fields, and a picture-perfect duck pond. The Millpond Recreation Area is just a few miles north-west of town and offers camping, baseball fields, playgrounds and much, much more. Pleasant Valley Reservoir and the Lower Owens River offer fantastic year-round trout fishing. The Bishop Country Club is a challenging 18-hole course with breathtaking views, plus full service pro shop, restaurant & bar. If you’re feeling lucky, be sure to visit the Paiute Palace Casino, just a few miles north-west of downtown on Highway 395. The people in this small town have shaped the landscape and in return the land has shaped their lives and history. The visitor has the opportunity to experience this distinct landscape as history, nature, habitat, recreation and beauty, depending on why they have come. By reading Lone Pine landscape, tourists can learn much, have fun and find their stay greatly enriched. The mountains to the west and to the east of Lone Pine are most prominent. Mt. Whitney, is the tallest peak at 14,496 feet, is the tallest peak in the lower 48 states. It has always been a bit of a mystery, originally climbed by three local men and named Fisherman’s Peak after being mistakenly identi- fied by early explorers. The Whitney Portal Road, a turn west at Lone Pine’s only stop light, will take you up to 8300 feet to the Portal where there is a store and restaurant, a pond and a magnificent waterfall tumbling out of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. To the east of Lone Pine are the Inyo Mountains, almost as tall, but quite different in look. Cerro Gordo, the largest silver bullion mining area in California, can be reached by a mountain road that begins just east of the town of Keeler. Call ahead to Mike Patterson, the owner at 760-264-3273. The wealth of Cerro Gordo is credited with kick-starting the city of Los Angeles. Lone Pine is the site of four cemeteries. The Pioneer Cemetery on Inyo Street has many of the early citizens including the grave of Charles Begole, the founder of Lone Pine. The Earthquake Cemetery is located just north of town on the west side and contains the graves of the victims of the 1872 earthquake. A third cemetery lies hidden in the desert on Narrow Gauge Road just south of the “big turn.” Finally there is the Mt. Whitney Cemetery across from the Earthquake memorial, still in use today. Mining history is visible in the Narrow Gauge bed that ran from Nevada down to Keeler. Traveling out Narrow Gauge Road just to the north of town, takes you past the Southern Pacific Depot to Owenyo Road. Traveling north on this road will take you to the ruins of Owenyo, a town abandoned when the railroad was shut down. The old depot building can still be seen in Keeler. The Southern Inyo Museum, open seasonally, has much on display from the Darwin mining era. It is located on Bush Street. Alabama Hills just west of Lone Pine 10 B I G P I NE B I S H O P D E A T H V A L L E Y I N D E P E N D E N C E L O N E P I N E I N Y O In March of 1872 one of the greatest earthquakes felt in the United States in historic times shook the valley, knocking down nearly all of the adobe buildings of the new settlement. One remaining wall of the Meysan Store can be found behind La Florista. C OU N T Y V I S I T O R ’ S Within two years, the town had been rebuilt of wood and the town plaza near Carl’s Jr. saw a great 4th of July celebration. Go west on Whitney Portal Road across the Aqueduct and take the first dirt road north. If you continue, you will end up on top of one of the fault lines G U I D E and can witness still the force of the earthquake of 1872. The creeks and high mountain lakes around Lone Pine remain the habitat of the famous golden trout. Ask at the Chamber about their annual fly fisherman certificate event. The creeks draining out of the Sierra here are the earliest open in the area and may be fished from March to October. Diaz Lake formed during the earthquake of 1872 is also open early and presents opportunities for water recreation for many of the summer months. The town has an annual film festival Columbus Day weekend celebrating the rich history. The Beverly and Jim Rogers Museum of Lone Pine Film History, open just over a year, has a prominent location on south Main Street. It contains displays on this famous history including the Humphrey Bogart film High Sierra and modern films like Tremors and Star Trek 5 and 7. The Museum also has an 84-seat theater, which screens a fifteen-minute orientation film. Other events are scheduled during the year. Call the Museum at 876-9909 for information on upcoming events. Historic Lubken Ranch is a 759 acre paradise at the foot of Mt. Whitney with priceless water rights the L.A. Department of Water & Power never managed to acquire (remember the movie Chinatown?). Sited within what architect Richard Neutra proclaimed to be the greatest expanse of free open space he’d witnessed since the Gobi Desert, Lubken Ranch is today a working cattle ranch with rich possibilities for future creative development (Sagaponac West?). Satellite views show the ranch to be an oasis of green within the vast panoramic landscape. With uncounted miles of surrounding land owned by the BLM and DWP, the feeling on the land is as if you own your own National Park. Improvements include water systems, corrals, a 4 bedroom 3 bath ranch house, outbuildings, and the old Pheasant Hunting Clubhouse now converted to living quarters. The ranch is an easy 3 hour drive from Los Angeles. There is a 60’ wide 4,000 foot airport runway at an elevation of 3,680 feet just 5 minutes from Lubken Ranch. With new pricing, the Ranch now represents a unique and viable investment opportunity in land, water, and scenic beauty. $7,450,000 Contact: Crosby Doe 310-428-6755 3 1 0 .2 7 5 .2 2 2 2 crosbydoe.com™ Crosby Doe Associates, Inc. 345 North Maple Dr. #105 Beverly Hills CA 90210 I N Y O C O U N T Y V I S I T O R ’ S G U I D E I N Y O LONE PINE EVENTS 16 B I G P I NE B I S H O P September Mount Whitney Classic Race - Starts in Badwater Death Valley, this is a hard core endurance cycling ride. The courthouse is the fourth in Inyo’s history. The first collapsed in the 1872 earthquake, the second burned in 1892, the third was determined to be too small and was replaced in 1922 by the stately building we have today. The original town site was laid out by Thomas Edwards. In contrast to the other towns in the Owens Valley, Highway 395 is not Main Street but Edwards Street. The Edwards House on West Market Street was built around the 1860s. The adobe portion is the oldest structure still standing in Inyo County. The Eastern California Museum, three blocks west of the courthouse, houses much of the region’s history. The museum displays a large collection of artifacts, historic photographs, quality Native American basketry, extensive mining and farming equipment, the history of Los Angeles in the Owens Valley, a Manzanar artifact and photographic collection, a local history research library, the Mary DeDecker native plant garden, and a bookstore. The “Commander’s” House built between 1866 and 1869 18 B I G P I NE B I S H O P was moved to its present location from Fort Independence. It is one of the last remaining examples of rural Victorian architecture in the Owens Valley. Dehy Park at the north end of town is a popular gathering place for summer community events. Independence Creek flows through and provides a cool place to relax. Children of all ages love the creek and play areas. Visitors will also enjoy seeing The Slim Princess Engine No. 18. This narrow gauge locomotive ran on the Carson & Colorado line from Laws to Keeler until 1954. Mary Austin lived in Independence for several years in a home on West Market Street and completed her book, Land of Little Rain, in this house in 1903. A historical marker in front of the private residence (not open to the public) describes her ties to the valley and town. The Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery, a little over 3 miles northwest of Independence, is a wonderful place to visit. It is the favored site for high school graduation, summer weddings, and family picnics. Built in 1916 on land donated by the citizens of Independence, it was the second state hatchery built D E A T H V A L L E Y in California. For many years it has supplied trout eggs to other hatcheries in California and other western states. It is the only hatchery to produce golden trout, California’s state fish. Adventure awaits you east and west of Independence where camping, hiking, fishing, and hunting abound. Extensive hiking and backpacking trails go throughout the Sierra from trail heads at Onion Valley, Shephard Pass, and Baxter Pass. There are several campgrounds between town and the trail heads and abundant trout fishing in the local creeks. East of Independence the Owens River and off-channel lakes, ponds, and ditches offer warm water fishing opportunities for smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, bluegill, and catfish. Farther east, hiking and exploring opportunities exist in the historic mining areas of the Inyo Mountains. Wherever you go, north or south, east or west, be prepared for sudden weather changes. Let someone know where you are going, have plenty of water, and if your vehicle breaks down or gets stuck, stay with it. I N D E P E N D E N C E L O N E P I N E Onion Valley 18 miles west of Independence I N Y O The Inyo County Eastern California Museum T he heart of the museum’s collection is one of the largest collections of Owens Valley Paiute-Shoshone basketry in the nation. Ornamental and functional baskets, along with cradle boards, arrowheads, bows and arrows, and rare examples of Paiute bead work are included C O U N T Y V I S I T O R ’ S in the extensive collection. The basket collection includes more than 400 baskets and nearly 100 other, related artifacts, and is contained in about 14 large display cases. Upon their rescue, one turned and exclaimed, “Goodbye, Death Valley!” That exclamation has withstood the test of time: in 1933 the area was officially designated Death Valley National Monument, and in 1994 the Monument was upgraded to a National Park. Created when a large inland lake dried up thousands of years ago, Death Valley is the lower 48’s largest National Park at 3.3 million acres, and welcomes upwards of one million visitors annually. This remarkable country can be easily enjoyed by those with a sense of adventure or the need to relax and get away from it all. Death Valley’s variety is alluring. Standing guard over the Valley is the 11,049-foot Telescope Peak, a frequently snow-covered mountain just west of Badwater, which, at 282 feet below sea level, is the lowest point in North America. Some winters it snows near the valley floor, while summertime temperatures here regularly reach the 22 B I G P I NE B I S H O P 120s. The shifting sand dunes allow little to no growth, while other areas burst forth with a kaleidoscope of wildflowers. Visitors worldwide have made Death Valley a necessary stop in their desire to experience its rarities — the heat (many visit during the summer), the boundless expanse, the awe-inspiring contrasts, and, something a lot of modern people are unaccustomed to, the peace and quiet. Furnace Creek Ranch and Resort is a center of activity and a springboard for further exploration. The National Park Service operates an excellent Visitor’s Center here, a downscaled relief map of Death Valley, and a free, short documentary film introducing Death Valley to firsttime guests. Also at the Ranch are the enjoyable and informative Borax Museum with its collection of Death Valley artifacts. From Furnace Creek many of the Valley’s natural attractions are conveniently located: nearby Harmony Borax Works, the views from Zabriskie Point and the vivid colors of Artist’s Palette, salt-encrusted Devil’s Golf Course, Badwater with its “bad water,” Dante’s View and, one of the area’s most amazing attractions, Marta Becket’s D E A T H V A L L E Y I N Y O C O U N T Y V I S I T O R ’ S G U I D E Amargosa Opera House. Furnace Creek Ranch has restaurants, motel rooms, a pool, the world’s lowest golf course, an airstrip, and camping and RV facilities. Furnace Creek Inn provides fine dining, a springfed pool and well-appointed rooms. About 25 miles from Furnace Creek is Stovepipe Wells Village, offering a motel, restaurant, pool, general store with gas, and campground and RV spots. From Stovepipe Wells you may also explore Mosaic Canyon, the Devil’s Cornfield, Grotto Canyon, Wildrose Canyon with its old charcoal kilns, Titus Canyon and the ghost town of Leadfield, and the wildflowers and sweeping vistas of Daylight Pass. At the north end of Death Valley is Scotty’s Castle, a seeming mirage built in the 1920s in the style of Spanish architecture. The famous Death Valley Scotty told many tall tales here. Wealthy Chicago businessman Albert Johnson, who funded construction of the Castle, took a liking to the old “prospector” and his stories, and built him a room of his own where his trademark red neckties still hang. Scotty’s Castle is not a “castle” in the usual sense of the word: it simply must be seen to be believed. The high elevation mountain tops of the White Mountains are home to the oldest trees in the world, the Ancient Bristlecone Pines. The 28,000 acre botanical reserve is managed and protected by the US Forest Service, Inyo National Forest. The ancient trees are easily accessible during the late spring, summer and fall months. During the winter they are well protected by a blanket of snow and low temperatures. Spring brings a short growing season into full bloom with a beautiful display of high desert wildflowers and new growth on the ancient trees. B I G P I NE B I S H O P I N Y O D E A T H V A L L E Y C O U N T Y V I S I T O R ’ S G U I D E SHOSHONE / TECOPA In addition to bristlecone pines, limber pines, aspen, pinyon and juniper trees all make the White Mountain their home. Forage and sparse water resources make living difficult for animals but deer, desert bighorn sheep, coyotes and even bear reside in the White Mountains. Known for its stunningly dark night skies, the White Mountains provide a living laboratory for study and are frequently used by college and university groups for their summer field study camps. The ancient trees are a focal point for visitors to the White Mountains. Some of the ancients are over 4000 years old and are not only still living, but still producing cones. Bristlecone pines are found widely scattered throughout the White and Inyo Mountains but no where in greater concentrations than in the outcrops of dolomite rock. This highly alkaline soil provides harsh growing conditions that keep the competition to a minimum, allowing the bristlecone seedlings to get a head start on germination. Rather than avoiding those adverse growing conditions the Bristlecone Pine thrive. Bristlecone Pine Forest 24 G U I D E T he town of Shoshone, in southeast Inyo County, is a “paradise regained” of unmarred American desert. Settled in 1910 by prospector and businessman “Dad” Fairbanks, Shoshone became a depot for the Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad, a center for local trade, and a place where area miners found rest and relaxation after hard-rock mining in Death Valley and its environs. Shoshone Village offers the Crowbar Café and Saloon, Café C’est Si Bon, the Shoshone Inn and Campground with full hook-up RV spaces, gas and supplies, a medical clinic, post office, a small airstrip, and the hub of the regional school district. The Shoshone Museum/ Death Valley Chamber Visitors Center offers an information kiosk, free travel advice and wireless Internet, gift shop, and wonderful displays on area geology, history. The town can be a springboard to Death Valley, the Amargosa River, Marta Becket’s Amargosa Opera House and the Tecopa Hot Springs area, as well as Pahrump, Nevada, 27 miles east. Originally Tecopa Hot Springs (then Yaga) was the largest Native settlement in the region because of its natural hot springs, wildlife and wetlands, and proximity to the trading routes that became known as the Old Spanish Trail. A series of hard-rock mining camps in the late 1800s were named Tecopa after a Paiute leader famous for negotiating peace during those rough and tumble days. Today’s traveler can take advantage of pristine desert landscapes, vivid sunsets, and Tecopa Hot Springs’ healing mineral waters at three different resorts with private baths and campgrounds with full hook-up RV spaces, the Poo-Ha-Bah-HaBah Native Healing Center, or the Inyo County campground, with separate bath houses for men and women. Other amenities include massage services, Pastels Bistro, the Tecopa Basin Artist Gallery (both at the historic Tecopa Hot Springs Resort), an international hostel, post office, elementary school, and a variety of small shops. In spring and fall, vast flocks of migratory birds take advantage of the marshes and surrounding canyons, particularly Grimshaw Lake, a great birding locale and protected wetland. Spring wildflower viewing, photography, bicycling, gliding, and hiking in the Kingston, Tecopa, Ibex and Sheepshead mountains are also excellent activities. About five miles south of Tecopa is the China Date Ranch, a startling oasis amid the surrounding desert landscape. At the Ranch, open every day except Christmas, visitors can browse the cactus nursery, gift shop and bakery, enjoy numerous historical displays and extensive hiking trails. There is also a Bed and Breakfast on site. You can explore the Amargosa Canyon, about to become a federally recognized Wild and Scenic River, stroll on the old T&T track bed. On July 19th, 2008 the Inyo National Forest celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. Visit the Inyo National Forest website at www. fs.fed.us/r5/inyo to find out more details or call the ranger station at 873-2500.
