Belong and Believe in action
“ballpark” figures – and realized
when you add up all of those events
we hosted almost 1,600 people . . . in
one week’s time. The specific rough
count we calculated is 1,557!
In other words NUMC helped almost 1,600 people “Belong” through
worship or serving experiences during Holy Week. (Holy Cow! That is
amazing!) Sure, many of them were
visiting from other churches during

many of them were not. That is, we
hosted many people who may not have a church home.
And how amazing would it be if even a few of them felt like
they Belong to God through the NUMC faith community!?
Go a step farther: Baptisms and Confirmation. The afternoon of the Palm Sunday Combined Celebration Service,
Youth Director Matt Deitrich and I baptized two youth by
immersion at the Wesley Village indoor pool. About 25 family members and friends gathered around Mary-Kate and
Anna Stephens to celebrate their public profession of faith.
This is a Believe moment. And a wonderful celebration
A WORD FOR GOD’S PEOPLE
In the Fall we began talking (in sermons, leadership teams,
staff conversations, etc.) about the idea of our Discipleship
process at Nicholasville United Methodist Church in terms
of 3-B’s: Belong, Believe and Become.
Remember in the Gospels there was a pattern where Jesus
called disciples to Belong to Him; He would be their Rabbi
and they would be His Disciples. And then Jesus invited
them to Believe. As they traveled with Him, they listened,
watched, experienced and helped with the miraculous Kingdom work Jesus was doing, and in the process they began to
believe he was more than a rabbi – He was the Son of God!
And finally, Jesus empowered them to Become builders of
the Kingdom, mature Believers who became servant-leaders
who built the early church.
In the last several weeks, we have seen elements of Belong
and Believe play out in some powerful ways. Take Holy
Week, for example. NUMC hosted a Palm Sunday Combined
Celebration Service, five days of Community Noon Holy
Week Services, a special Maundy Thursday Service, Community Easter Egg Hunt, record-setting number of Manna
Meals served and four Easter Services. So we took some attendance counts from those gatherings – due to the nature
of these events, some were specific and others were more

Keep in your prayers . . .
Longtime NUMC member Doryce Wise and a nephew were forced out of
her home by a fire in the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 29.
Neither occupant was injured but the house at 313 Hawthorne Drive,
which backs up to Lone Oak Golf Course, incurred “significant” fire and
smoke damage in the attic and throughout. Please keep this dear lady in
your prayers and reach out to show your love and offer help when possible.

youth into full membership through Confirmation Class 2016. Welcome
to our newest members: Aiden Breen, Kennedy Cox, Hannah Embree,
Evelyn Mickschl, Brianna Rech and Gracie Shifflet. Again, This is another Believe moment. And a wonderful celebration at that!
Friends, God is moving in the hearts and lives of people at NUMC! And
it is so incredibly exciting to be a part of this movement of God.
Thanks so much to our wonderful staff who serve by loving and leading
with spiritual discernment. Thanks so much to our amazing volunteers
who are truly servant-leaders in the Kingdom. And most of all, thanks
to God for being so faithful to his people at NUMC. One of the things
we are reminded of from the scriptures is that God is Faithful, and God
honors Faithfulness!
Friends, as we are Faithful in helping people to Belong, Believe and Become, I am convinced God will do a mighty work among us!

Members of the Homebound Committee
are faced with joy and sorrow. It is part of the
territory; part of our ministry. We view ourselves as representatives of NUMC, which
the homebound person (or relatives) is a part
of and loves as much as we do. We honor
these individuals in various small ways, and
strive to bring the joy of the Lord to them.
However, sometimes we have to say goodbye.
Recently, three of those we serve have
passed away. In January we lost long-time
member Mavis Hubbard. This past month,
we had to say goodbye to Ernestine Stinnett,
age 88, and Mary Woods (who was featured
in the Homebound article in February 2015),
87, mother of Brenda Cox Cobb.
As a committee, when we lose a homebound member, regardless of whether we
ever met that person (since we generally are
assigned to a particular individual), we experience grieving. Our church loses a bit of
our connection with the past. We honor each
of these ladies for the part she played in our
church’s history.

The Nicholasville United Methodist Women’s Ministry Annual Spiritual
Growth Retreat will be conducted Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.,
with snacks and final sign-up from 8:30-9 a.m. Pre-registration is preferred by Tuesday, April 5, and is necessary for those needing child care.
Our theme: “Where Does Your Hope Lie?”
In this complicated lifestyle of relationships, roles, responsibilities, social
media, struggles and pains, it is easy to lose focus . . .
• What is the passion that drives us?
• Where do we go for advice and where do we run for comfort?
• As national and world events shake our security and threaten our
future, what do we cling to?
Sometimes we just need to stop, rest, talk and listen in God’s presence.
We encourage you to take time to enjoy being with women of all generations as we worship, read scripture, listen to testimonies and pray together.
The registration fee of $15 per person covers the cost of lunch and all
materials and should be submitted to the Church Office. Registration
forms are available in “Hope” brochures, which can be found in Welcome
Centers in the Sanctuary and Community Center. Limited scholarships
have been made available.
The day’s schedule includes introductions, prayers and worship; an
opening message; testimonies; small-group time in the word and prayer;
time for responding, and a break for lunch.

CHILDREN AND FAMILY MINISTRIES
Over the course of the past month, we celebrated highest highs and lowest lows in pivotal
moments of our faith. We met Christ with shouts of “Hosanna!” and waved palm
branches of praise to welcomed Him to Jerusalem. But what we welcome Him
to was actually the beginning of the end; we praised Him into Gethsemane,
we ushered him to the mount of Calvary. And even as we shouted with joy,
our hearts knew what the week held – the Last Supper, Good Friday,
the dark silence of Saturday. And in those lowest lows, we grieved.
We were sad. Our shouts were silenced.
But, oh, the glory that awaited us. Oh, the joy that came. Oh, for
Sunday morning when the Light broke through the darkness, and our
shouts returned, this time with eternity in the strains. For this time
we shouted to a risen Savior; this time to an everlasting Lord; this time

Hosanna’s without end.
This was Holy Week. In every moment of it, in the joy and in the sorrow,
we found hope in the Resurrection – for we have this hope, THIS HOPE,

as an anchor to our souls. And with that hope, we continue to follow Jesus

OPERATING FUND – As of February 29, our operating income has exceeded
operating expenses by $3,785. Income is $5,298 less than budget and expenses
are $9,083 less than budget. The primary reason for expenses being less than
budget is the fact Conference and District Apportionments are paid as a percent

February 29, our loan balance is
$235,423. The loan balance consists of
a $135,423 mortgage note at Farmers
Bank and a $100,000 note to a church
member. As of the end of February,
we have a “shortfall” of $2,070 needed to meet the year-to-date requirement for our loan payments.

JCPL seeks storyteller volunteer trainees
This note from Pastor Wade:
The Jessamine County Public Library is looking for fun-loving, dedicated individuals to train as Spellbinders® storytellers and to serve as library ambassadors to our community.
Spellbinders is a literacy-boosting program that trains people
in the art of oral storytelling. Once trained, JCPL volunteers
go into the community to tell stories to audiences of all ages.
Volunteers are asked to utilize their skills a minimum of one
hour a month. Registration for April dates is now open and
space is limited. Attendance at all sessions – Tuesdays and
Thursdays, April 19, 21, 26 and 28, 6-8:30 p.m.; Saturday,
April 30, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. – is required. Contact Rachel Staub
