The distinct Steelmark logo consists of three stars (technically called “hypocycloids”) that highlight steel’s inherent strength and toughness. The Steelmark logo maintains three distinct colors that represent the three materials used to produce steel: • Yellow for coal • Orange for iron ore • Blue for steel scrap Did you know that Orange has been a significant color in Peddinghaus history? I’m sure that a quick look at any Peddinghaus machine, document, website, or promotion will reveal to you the distinct Peddinghaus metallic logo in the flashy orange color. Orange denotes Peddinghaus’ honor to the steel industry. Lyle Menke Peddinghaus Introduces New Technology at EVERY NASCC Show Q: What is the Number 1 Reason why industry people attend conferences or trade shows? A: To view new technologies, engineering design progress, and methods to improve their business efficiency. What’s new? is a common question that every attendee asks at a trade show. Sounds feasible, doesn’t it? The reason that most people attend trade shows is for one reason – to see what new is being exhibited. A Great Time to be in Pittsburgh! I did a little research. Did you know that Peddinghaus has introduced NEW machines or technology at every NASCC Conference in the past decade? The NASCC in Pittsburgh is like the Steelers in the Super Bowl – always exciting, always entertaining, and exceptional teamwork. The AISC has done another superlative job in Just Look at this “Top Ten List” of Fab Shop Winners: organizing a fast paced conference with 2011 – Pittsburgh: “something for everyone”. 2010 – Orlando: Congratulations to Katey Preston and Elizabeth Robelet, AISC Conference organizers for another superlative effort. Indeed, the PeddiWriter will fast become the product of the Decade! Did you know that Peddinghaus has introduced NEW technology at every NASCC show for the past 10 years! Our commitment to new breakthrough technology has no rival in our industry. One thing that I have learned in my travels is that structural fabricators are very resilient. Let’s be realistic, we know from firsthand experience, and from AISC reports that the last year was difficult, but it is not a reason to panic! 2. We can’t keep up with production for the demand of the ADVANTAGE II high speed carbide drill with tool changer. We didn’t bring the tool changer to the fabrication party, but we have certainly made it better. You would think that our engineers would leave it alone – but no they have improved it with new under web scribing technology. Yes, all four sides of a beam or profile can be marked with layout detail on one machine! Continued on page 6 We are all professionals in our industry. Business cycles exist, and you cannot make money every year. The key to success is to “weather the storm” of a down year, by making good business decisions in the good years! They specialize in industrial and commercial work, such as power plants, factories, refineries, and similar petro-chemical type work. They average about 15,000 tons per year, with capacity for much more. Typical of many industry companies, Liaromatis is a family business. Business challenges abound in Greece, but with technology and a good business partner, Liaromatis is thriving… “Don’t believe everything you hear on the World News,” says John Liaromatis. John’s words are in bold italics on these pages. Ask John Liaromatis, a principal in the structural fabricating firm, Kostas Liaromatis, why he attends the NASCC. After all, he has been to the Conferences in Nashville and Phoenix, and he responds quickly: “My steel fabricating business continued to grow – and I was searching for the best technology in the industry for my fab shop.” What other exhibition offers a structural fabricator the opportunity to see fabrication machines and various technology in one location at one time. In three trade show aisles, a fabricator can view every major structural machinery company. John says, “I inspected and compared all the available machine tools – from all the manufacturers: Peddinghaus, Ficep, Voortman, Python, Controlled Automation, Daito, Behringer, Kinetic… all of them.” When it came time to select new equipment technology for his state-of-the-art structural shop, John’s choice was simple: “I Chose Peddinghaus… Here is Why: The Liaromatis Family: (l-r) Panagiotis, Allegra, Kostas and John • Best and Latest Technology • Strong, Ruggedly Built • Exceptional 24 Hour phone assistance • Same Day Spare Parts Shipments • Peddinghaus NEVER Lets you Down • Peddinghaus is ALWAYS there to help my business • They insure that I am happy” “The most important decision a fabricator ever makes is his material handling shop layout!” — Mr. Kostas Liaromatis SPRING 2011 STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW Loading the 833 is the same for angle, channel or plate – start outside and save space. The Revolution 833 Spins Angle/Channel/Plate into Cash for Liaromatis John Liaromatis is a strong believer in “break-through” technology. The Peddinghaus Revolution 833 delivers detail components for angle/channel/flats & plate with the technologies of punching, shearing, and marking. All in a compact machine that is easy to load, process, and unload with one operator. “I’ve been waiting for this type of detail machine for a LONG time,” says John. “It needed to be versatile, accurate, and productive.” 5 The Revolution 833 produces on the inside with a space saving footprint and automated unloading system. Detail components can get easily overlooked or misplaced in a large structural shop – but not at Liaromatis. “We can changeover from angle to plate without stopping the machine” “I can run all my clip angles, splice plate connections, and some cap plates in the morning; they are fitted and welded the same afternoon.” No other Anglemaster or detail type machine on the market can process what the Revolution can: • 200 x 200 x 25 mm – 8 x 8 x 1" Angle Iron • 305 mm Wide – 12" Wide Channel • 305 x 25 mm – 12 x 1" flat/plate In the next “Summer” SFR issue, we will explore in detail how your shop layout is the most critical decision for profitability, future growth, and success. Watch for Liaromatis’ Part II in a couple of months. In this issue, we will give you a quick look at the shop layout of K. Liaromatis Structural Steelworks. Following are some fast facts for your consideration: • Liaromatis designed their shop material handling flow BEFORE the building was constructed The Peddinghaus Revolution 833 delivers.” When Liaromatis runs production, their processes are designed for a manufacturing “just in time” organization. They minimize raw stock inventory investment by fabricating the steel exactly when the fabricated components are required at the project site. In Structural Steel Fabrication – Your Shop Layout is the KEY TO SUCCE$$ Thinking of buying a machine or modifying your fab shop material flow? READ HERE FIRST! Before any concrete was poured or a column was erected, Kostas Liaromatis consulted with Peddinghaus engineers for a productive shop layout solution. The REVOLUTION 833 was introduced last year in Orlando to outstanding acclaim! This versatile detail machine has gotten even better – in addition to processing 8x8'' angle iron, and 12'' plate – guess what we will unveil in Pittsburgh! Channel punching and shearing! Now you have the perfect machine to help you with those pesky stair stringers – punch it, shear it, mark it – go for it! The Older I Get, The Smarter My Dad Becomes I’ve said it before… the current times are unlike any we have experienced. Today’s headlines are affecting business in ways not seen previously (like the price of a barrel of oil). So here’s what I do: I call my father every day… not only do I ask him questions – I even listen to his advice! Yes, that old saying about your Dad getting smarter as you grow older is absolutely true. Even though today’s economic times seem difficult, one item remains crystal clear: everything – including business – runs in cycles. And the race is not always won by the swiftest: but the smartest! Thanks AISC 4. Our HSFDB is drawing rave reviews from global customers! Yep, you guessed it; our engineers have enhanced this plate processor too. Yes, we can mill slotted holes, yes we can face mill heavy plate, yes can drill large oversized holes, yes, we can drill Hardox hardened plate… just come and see it! You won’t be disappointed. It is with deep appreciation that we thank the staff and management of the AISC for the depth of preparation required for another successful conference. Congratulations to Roger Ferch and Scott Melnick for their leadership and also to Katey Preston and Elizabeth Robelet for their hard work in pulling all the details together. My Glass is Always Half Full! I know many of you readers know me personally by now. I can honestly say that I am very excited about the future of steel construction in North America. Why? The AISC reports that 58% of domestic construction is steel. We are winning the battle here against concrete. Also, I want to emphasize that the USA still remains one of the best countries in the world to do business, and our federal government has programs to help us invest (like 100% bonus depreciation). A fabricator owner from the East Coast told it to me best. Here are his words: “I am tired of people who say the economy ‘is what it is’ That’s nonsense! I control my own destiny because I invested in technology over 10 years ago – this investment has served my business very well. I am always competitive – and I can choose what projects I want to bid: the profitable ones.” So let’s all of us join together to move our industry forward with confidence – as you know, “my glass is ALWAYS half full”!! Let’s toast to the strength of steel in Pittsburgh! SPRING 2011 STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW 7 LIAROMATIS Continued from page 5 • Liaromatis and Peddinghaus Layout Design Engineers were in close contact for over two years preparing, modifying, and finalizing the exact shop layout • See “Getting to Know Greg Carpenter” on page 28. Greg was instrumental in Liaromatis’ design layout • Liaromatis eliminated unnecessary building trusses, column supports, or other structural items which would impede beam flow or throughput in their building Intersecting lift and carry quiet glide systems eliminate any unnecessary crane handling. “Peddinghaus was with us every step of the way,” recalls John, “They did not just sell us machines, they insured that our shop layout was perfect – with plenty of flexibility for any type of job.” Why buy a crane when you can load stock outside with a fork truck? If beams are coped – they have access to fit up, welding If beams are sawed – they can move in any direction – for drilling, coping, blasting, etc. Fast coping of profiles is achieved with a Peddinghaus ABCM 1250 integrated in the material handling system. The building is designed specifically for maximum tonnage – with low ceilings to save space and money! Stock is loaded outside for the miter saw saving more shop space. • Peddinghaus equipment is modular so it can be used, relocated, and used again – an integral part of the Liaromatis shop plan If beams are drilled – they have access to coping, blasting, or fit up/welding • Ironically, Liaromatis builds cranes and crane rails for some industrial customers – BUT, they avoid crane usage with their roller conveyor and Quiet Glide Lift/Carry material handling system The FPDB 2500 is the perfect plate processing center for all detail connections. The Peddinghaus BDL 1250/9 drill has been in service for 11 years. w w w. s t e e l f a b r e v i e w. c o m Material Handling has plenty of storage… Running multiple projects is no problem 8 STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW SPRING 2011 NORCO MANUFACTURING From Show Floor to Shop Floor the Advantage 2 Continues to Deliver! If you visited the NASCC last year in Orlando, Florida you received a front row seat to the unveiling of the Advantage 2 Drill Line – a machine that is breaking sales records around the globe. Fabricators took notice of its rapid drilling speeds, powerful build, and superior technology on the show floor. “But what happens to machines after they leave the NASCC?” “Do they really perform as displayed in a REAL PRODUCTION environment?” To prove that the technology in the Peddinghaus booth isn’t “all show” the editorial staff at the Steel Fabricators’ Review paid a visit to the user of the very first Advantage 2 drill line – Norco Manufacturing in Franksville, Wisconsin. We asked the experts and found out if seeing truly is believing at the NASCC. MQL lubrication on the Advantage 2 leaves parts practically dry and ready for secondary operations without the need to clean materials after drilling. Is this your first Peddinghaus machine? What other equipment do you have in your shop? Art Rodriguez, Production Manager: We have several Peddinghaus machines including a 643 Anglemaster, and BDL-760 saw/drill in addition to the new Advantage 2. Outside these machines we employ all types of other equipment from mills to machining centers to band saws to painting booths. We are always watching the machinery market and always have our eye out for technology. Art Rodriguez, Production Manager at Norco Manufacturing with his latest machine tool addition. Can you tell the SFR a bit more about the products Norco manufactures – Why is a machine like this necessary for your operations? Dave Eberle, President: Norco Manufacturing provides universal overhead doors that are installed on military bases, airports, commercial buildings, and of course specialty applications that require complex door mechanisms. We ship around the globe to locations that include not only the USA, but Africa, the Middle East, Philippines, Egypt, Hong Kong, and even Antarctica. All parts are made and manufactured by Norco in our Wisconsin facilities so we can control costs, delivery, and quality in every aspect of operations. We do not outsource any of our fabrication work and pride ourselves in that respect. The Peddinghaus drill lines we employ are a critical part of our production when it comes to the structural sections for our door structures. If you had to compare your old drill to your Advantage 2 what would you say are the main differences?: Art Rodriguez, Production Manager: The new machine is like night and day compared to the old one. It’s faster, stronger, and more efficient. I have to say even though it is much more modern, and complex at first glance, the technology actually makes it easier to operate, and faster to learn. Our operator picked it up in no time! When it comes to the tool changer I would say it makes the machine much safer to operate. People aren’t required to enter the machine for every different hole size in a program like our older 3 spindle drill. At Norco many of our beams have up to 4 different hole sizes in addition to scribe marking – so this is a big advancement for us. SPRING 2011 2010 The AFPS-643 Anglemaster has been a powerful workhorse in Norco Manufacturing for a wide array of angle detail components. STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW 9 Peddinghaus Drill Lines are the tools that make Norco Manufacturing one of the world's leading manufacturers of universal door systems. drill times – there is no comparison in speed between the two. The carbide tooling maintains amazing tool life, commonly 1100 - 1200 holes per insert without replacing. On top of this we are able to simply swap out the insert and eliminate the sharpening you would have with twist drills. Since the machine can run both we use the twist drills in special applications such as when a really long tool is needed and one in carbide isn’t available. On toed in or toed out flanges the Advantage 2 measuring system maintains superior accuracy on all profiles. So it sounds like these things have made life easier for production – anything else? Art Rodriguez, Production Manager: Norco Manufacturing’s machine operators learned the new machine with little issue due to its modern, and intuitive technology. We love the MQL lubrication system; we like it so much, we are looking to upgrade the old drill to use the same technology. It requires much less cleanup, with no compromise in tool life. Instead of a flood coolant mixture (water and chemical) it applies a small amount of lubricant to the cutting surface of the tool. This really eliminates a lot of the cleanup required with the old way of doing things. How is the accuracy of the machine? Does the roller wheel cause you any concerns? Art Rodriguez, Production Manager: The Peddinghaus bay of Norco Manufacturing's facility houses 2 saws, 2 drills, and an Anglemaster all in one compact space. How was the change from High Speed Steel tooling to Carbide Inserts?: Even though we run both types on the new machine, the carbide allows us to use much more aggressive feeds and speeds for really fast No concerns at all. The measurement has been fantastic and the machine has been well within spec for all parts thus far– within less than 1/32” in everything I have seen. The new roller wheel system has been superb in adjusting for toed in or toed out flanges. Since we run a lot of small materials, they have a tendency to get damaged in transport – a smart measurement system is key to our success. w w w. s t e e l f a b r e v i e w. c o m Superior clamping on the Advantage 2 Drill Line allows for up to 1200 holes per carbide insert – cutting costs and increasing profitability. How do you feel this machine will impact the future of your company? Dave Eberle, President: The Advantage 2 has definitely made us more competitive with the way it helps us maximize our operations, and improve our versatility project to project. In the future as Norco continues to grow, it will become a critical tool for us to tackle new markets and diversify our business. 10 STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW SPRING 2011 MOUNTAIN STATES STEEL Making It Happen Since 1949 Chirs Olsen (l) and Jody Olsen (r) Making It Happen Since 1949 is the theme of Mountain States Steel in Lindon, Utah – but this is not just a motto or slogan – it is the creed by which this family company was founded and its’ business philosophy to this day. Chris and Jody Olsen are the next generation to operate Mountain States. Why is Making It Happen so appropriate to describe this company? Consider this: • Three years ago, structures were 80% of their business; bridges were 20% • Today, bridges comprise 75% of their business; structures are 25% Every Slowdown Contains an Opportunity – Building Bridges “We knew a slowdown was coming in the commercial and industrial market,” says Chris, “and we insured that our company was prepared to shift gears to other fabrication projects”. Bridge Components Fabricated on Peddinghaus Equipment. Many of those projects turned out to be bridges – many for the transportation market including highway and railroad. Another project was a bike path for the Oakland Bay Bridge in California. Bridge/Structural parts & components run on Peddinghaus’ FDB 2500 Plate Processors. It takes little space, has one operator, and produces plate components for bridges and structures 24/7. “The more the complex the project, the more grateful we are that we invested in Peddinghaus equipment. We can compete because Peddinghaus makes tough jobs like Bridge connections easier – their machines are just good”. Shifting Production from Buildings to Bridges How did Mountain States shift production from Buildings to Bridges? Chris and Jody Olsen outlined their success plan: • VERSATILITY • Our Company is geared to “Do what it takes to make” it happen; we are not afraid to tackle a challenging job Why it is named Mountain States Steel… The Rocky Mountains serve as a backdrop for this 61 year old fabricator. SPRING 2011 STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW 11 The versatility and capabilities of Mountain States Steel can best be explained by the scope of their projects. Echelon Resorts Grand Theater LakeSide Power Plant Iron Horse Trail Pedestrian Bridge Kennecott Pebble Crusher “Since our first Peddinghaus machine, we have been able to increase our productivity on all of the different types of work that we do, and increase our annual volume – this has allowed us to expand into new markets.” • EQUIPMENT • We buy – and maintain – top quality equipment; we have 8 Peddinghaus machines; they are strong, reliable, and easy to operate • PERSONNEL • Chris and Jody Olsen are quick to agree, “we would never have achieved any level of success without our employees. Our people are hard-working, knowledgeable, and flexible – the best!” Mountain States Steel and Peddinghaus have been partners for a long time, starting with a Fabripunch F1170 plate detail punch. Here is a rundown of their equipment: Mountain States has 8 Peddinghaus Machines • BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS • We do business with good partners – people we can depend on – from general contractors to Peddinghaus: firms who are dedicated and committed to success – like we are. • HARD WORK • “Nothing good comes easy” You have to reach out of your comfort zone to be successful. • BDL 1250/3 3 spindle structural drill • 1250-510 high speed band saw • AFCPS 823 Anglemaster • BDL 1250/9 9 spindle structural drill Mountain States houses Peddinghaus machines in buildings outside the main shop and utilizes outdoor loading to save valuable shop floor space for fitting up the large bridge structures. We were laying out all our holes in our structural shapes by hand and punching or drilling them manually. We were able to increase our production rates approximately 17% and our annual through-put by 35% with the same manpower.” Fast Facts About Mountain States Steel • Mountain States Steel averages 1,700 tons of structural steel per month – over 20,000 tons per year • Peddinghaus equipment – BDL drills, band saws, the FDB 2500 and Anglemaster 823 are used on EVERY bridge project. • One of their biggest projects was a 560 ft. free span truss weighing 640 tons used for the LDS Assembly Building in Salt Lake City The LDS Conference Center in Salt Lake City required 560 ft/170M free span trusses with the King Pin truss weighing at 640 tons. Steel versus Concrete – Steel’s Strengths: In the continuing battle of steel versus concrete construction, Chris and Jody Olsen recognize the fact that many General Contractors are familiar and comfortable with concrete – from pre-stress to pour in place. However, steel has significant strengths that need to be promoted: • Speed in construction – before and during erection • Seismic issues – the advantages are known, and is more focused now with the recent major earthquakes in Japan and Haiti • Get involved early in the project – helping to “consult” guides the entire project • Steel is the environmental choice – very important for LEED projects Mountain States Steel Does “Make it Happen” What is the most important information that you can learn from the staff and personnel of Mountain States Steel? Simple – they live, work, and breathe their corporate motto Making It Happen. When a downturn in non-residential buildings, commercial, and industrial work was looming a couple of years ago, MSS didn’t back down. They kicked in their AISC bridge certification savvy and know-how; and went to work. No excuses, no complaining – just Making It Happen like the Olsen founders did in 1949! With their experience and Peddinghaus equipment, Mountain States Steel tackles large, complex bridge structures with ease. This one-of-a-kind software creates the bi-directional link between Tekla Structures and Peddinghaus machines. CONNECTION SCRIBES AND POP MARKS • Automatically generate part identification – scribe the part name on any surface of material with no manual programming VISIT: www.peddinghaus.com/adnexxus PART ID NUMBER Don’t let the tedious task of file conversions slow down your data production. Unlike the fabrication shop, programmers and detailers are manufacturers of a different kind of product – data. Although data is not a tangible item that can be drilled, cut, or welded like a structural member its production can be just as time consuming and even more costly. The application of innovative software, such as Adnexxus, reduces the man hours required to program modern CNC equipment. By taking information directly from Tekla and seamlessly creating Peddinghaus parts files from the original data set, accuracy is achieved and efficiency is enhanced. What is Adnexxus and how does it expedite the programming process? Adnexxus is the direct bi-directional API between Peddinghaus software and Tekla Structures. By closing the gap between design and fabrication, the parts designed in Tekla are now translated directly into part programs with CNC operations in mind. Antiquated methods of bringing Tekla part files into modern CAM applications require programmers to convert from Tekla to a common file standard; and then convert that file into a part program for the machine in question. These multiple conversions paired with the vagueness of file standards commonly create inaccuracies in translation. Copes get moved, scribes get misplaced, and employees spend hours resolving conversion issues. Peddinghaus' Adnexxus software eliminates these intermediary file conversions between Tekla and Peddinghaus software. The part program created by Adnexxus uses geometric data straight from the source, derives naming structures from the original design and includes additional data that would have been previously omitted in common file conversions. Familiar conversion errors are accounted for and the countless hours previously spent fixing files can now be placed into value added operations elsewhere in your organization. Automatic layout and part mark programming with Adnexxus. Tekla Structures is a program that focuses on connection design and geometry. Adnexxus offers the tools to translate this information into automatic layout programming, eliminating the task of entering layout dimensions into a part program. By simply checking the “scribe” feature within Adnexxus, total part number and layout marking is automatically placed within the Peddinghaus part program. Software that requires manual programming for layout marking is not only time consuming but also poses the potential for human error when dictating dimensions. With Adnexxus dimensions are pulled straight from the Tekla model, proving to be the most accurate way to program a machine tool. • Automatically program lead-in cuts for thermally cut components. LEAD INS ROUNDED EDGES • Properly align flange thinning with web material compensation. This ensures that copes don’t cut into web material as can commonly occur in Tekla to DSTV file conversions. SAFETY DISTANCE FROM WEB • Select or omit specific features when programming for a specific type of machine. For example: When programming a drill line, it may be necessary to omit coping information, or vice versa. • Capable of specifying the number of tools, maximum tool sizes, and tool holder diameters available. This will allow you to adapt the file import process for capabilities of the specific machines in your shop. TEKLA GEOMETRY CORRECTIONS MACHINE OPTIMIZATION DID YOU KNOW? CARRYFORWARD tax deduction for future tax savings a more affordable time As opposed to depreciating machine cost over a set amount of time, fabricators are now able to fully depreciate the entire machine cost in a single year – 2011, from their taxable income. This 100% deduction in 2011 saves you on taxes NOW, instead of over the normal depreciation time span set by the IRS. This means big tax savings today! Depending on your tax situation, you may expect to save an average of 35% from a machine purchase – this means if a system costs $450,000 – you could save $157,500 from your taxes in 2011! A net cost of $292,500 for that machine tool investment! There may be scenarios where fabricators did not have a considerable amount of taxable income in recent time. Using the 100% Bonus Depreciation law, the value of a machine can be carried forward as far as 20 years from 2011, and deducted from future taxable income. This means an organization will not need to pay taxes until all CARRYFORWARD tax credits are utilized! to buy a new machine in the United States of America. Interest rates are at all time lows and tax incentives are the most powerful they have ever been in the history of the USA. The federal government is making it easier than ever to invest in equipment for the year 2011. No matter your size or profit projections for the coming year; you are eligible to benefit from the current tax laws. What If I Do Not Expect Taxable Profit This Year? CARRYBACK tax deductions for an income tax refund What Do We Mean by 100% Bonus Depreciation? Traditionally when a machine is purchased fabricators are able to write off the value of the machine over several years (conventionally 7 – 10) as an expense. Every time this machine “depreciation” expense is written off, it reduces taxable income. By reducing taxable income, you reduce the amount of money that is multiplied by your tax rate percentage, therefore reducing the taxes you pay! For some structural fabricators previous years yielded profits, but also higher tax expenditures. Using the CARRYBACK method, taxes can be refunded from previous years where taxes were paid, assisting you now in today’s complex marketplace. For every dollar of taxes paid in the last 2 years – you are eligible to receive a 100% refund using the CARRYBACK method of tax deductions. What Do I Do Now? Feel free to contact your Peddinghaus Regional Manager to receive a firsthand demonstration on how powerful this new tax incentive can apply to a new machine investment. Each of our USA Regional Managers has been fully trained to explain to you the key benefits of this new tax law in detail. Peddinghaus Corporation recommends before making any financial decisions using these laws that you contact a trusted tax professional. Before Peddinghaus I was a steel detailer for a local structural fabricator. I can remember we operated one of the original Peddinghaus beam punch lines, and several Peddinghaus Ironworkers. In my role I detailed commercial buildings, schools, highway utilities, and other miscellaneous steel work. This experience helps me relate with the challenges our customers face on a daily basis. I am proud to have been with Peddinghaus for a little over 22 years now. In that time I have been involved in everything from mechanical engineering to system layout and design. STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW SPRING 2011 What exactly does the Peddinghaus System Engineering group provide to Peddinghaus customers? Bryan Martin, Systems Engineer and I help customers setup their shops, and layout their production to achieve their fullest potential. When it comes to a Peddinghaus installation every shop is unique, and deserves special consideration. In our department we see it all – green grass projects, existing buildings with tight spaces, outside handling layouts, new equipment integrated with existing systems, new machines integrated with competitive lines, and even direct swap-outs of older equipment in times of an upgrade. We lend our experience to each Peddinghaus partner ensuring they get the most out of their machine tool investment. What are some typical problems fabricators experience when it comes to material handling? Greg’s expertise is in processing big tonnages in small spaces. Consider this scenario: 1. Invest in a multi spindle drill line as a standalone machine 2. Add a saw to create a tandem installation for added cutting versatility 3. Split the drill and saw apart for added efficiency 4. In the future additional equipment such as an automated coper, or an additional sawing system can be added “downstream” for even greater capacity. You can quickly see how the investment in a single machine has the potential to grow over time into a powerful production system. I can speak from experience that handling material with a crane can turn into a bad habit, especially if this is your first experience with automation. We all need to remember that every time we pick up material with a crane we are slowing down production! By using a crane to handle material you are taking it away from other processes in your shop, people have to wait until the area is clear of your lift, and commonly the person operating that crane is not operating the machine they should be running! Crane handling stifles productivity, and commonly costs at minimum $50 per lift when you take all of these factors into account. What advantages does Peddinghaus equipment present fabricators that people may not know about? Peddinghaus equipment is incredibly modular. There is no gripper carriage to struggle with so equipment can be purchased and expanded over time, allowing fabricators to grow at their own pace. We commonly design layouts keeping future expansion in mind. Greg Carpenter (l) and Bryan Martin (r) of Peddinghaus Corporation are your resource for total shop productivity. Now take into account that every part of the system can have its material handling stored outside – keeping the machines in small, manageable buildings. This kind of overhead cost and floor space savings is only possible with the Peddinghaus roller feed advantage! Can you give us an example of how you improved a fabricator’s efficiency using Peddinghaus technology? We had one customer who found themselves struggling with space because they had originally elected to store all equipment inside of their building. They found themselves with limited space for welding and fit up, and wrestling with indoor material storage! Now they store equipment and material outside, away from internal operations. This was a huge success! Trucks unload outside in stock yard and do not interfere with other operations. As machines operate they feed finished materials into the shop for final layout, fit up, and welding operations. They quickly maximized their tonnage per square foot of shop space, and increased the return on their investment for the facility! Easily maximize indoor shop space with a versatile roller feed material handling system. That’s what we do at Peddinghaus, and in the System Engineering Department – we make sure that fabricators get the most out of their investment so they can thrive in today’s complex marketplace!
