North Cross School, we understand
that your child is your utmost
priority and that you have many
options when it comes to the
summer months. We remain
confident that within the pages

And, most importantly, we know
they will have fun and make
new friends—two of the most
important summertime activities!
With the success of Discovery
Camp Jr. Edition last summer brings

Furthermore, we continue to expand
our Middle School and Chinese
Summer Programs offerings with
focused, individualized classes. As
numbers grow we will continually
update our catalog online. Please

General Information
Each summer, as part of our mission to serve as a community resource, North
Cross School hosts summer programs for hundreds of children from across the
Roanoke Valley and beyond. The program allows participants to choose from
a broad range of enrichment programs and sports camps designed to provide
students of all ages with safe activities that are interesting, challenging, and fun.
These offerings are intended to improve the social, mental, and physical skills of
participants and allow them to make new friends, as well as develop new interests
and revisit old ones. The School has been hosting these summer programs for
more than 30 years. Programs begin in early June and run through August.
Facilities
All of our programs are held on the School’s 77-acre, self-contained campus at
4254 Colonial Avenue, Roanoke, Virginia, at the corner of Rt. 419 and Colonial
Avenue. The School consists of nine buildings, including a lower, middle, and
upper school as well as the Carter Athletic Center which boasts indoor basketball
and volleyball courts, an indoor track, a dance studio, weight and exercise rooms,
racquetball courts, and an indoor swimming pool. In addition, we have installed a
brand new security system that keeps your child as safe as possible.
Faculty & Staff
The Summer Programs staff is comprised of teachers and coaches from North
Cross School and other area schools, college students, North Cross School alumni,
and counselors who are current students from North Cross School.
Camp Participants
North Cross School students, as well as students from dozens of other local
schools, participate. Please be reminded that participants are admitted on a firstcome, first-served basis. In an average year, over one-half of all participants come
from schools other than North Cross School and range from three to 15 years old.
Applicants are accepted without regard to race, creed, ethnicity, or national origin.
Programs
Students can participate in enrichment programs and sports camps. The
enrichment programs provide a structured, safe setting for students in age three
through eighth grade and offer guided activities and the time to explore individual
interests. The June Jamboree and Awesome August programs are designed to
provide a structured day-care setting for three-year old campers through fifth
grade students, offering flexible hours. The Kindercamp program is for three,
four and five-year old campers. Kindercamp participants are engaged in an array
of activities including swimming, storytelling, crafts, and exciting field trips. The
Discovery Camp program combines daily classes in art, literature, and science
with physical activities such as swimming and gym games. The Middle School
Madness program provides rising fifth through eighth grade students with the
opportunity to learn more about a variety of interests, including guitar, robotics,
cooking, chemistry, drama, 3D Printing, and more. The sports camps appeal to
male and female students of all ages and include basketball, volleyball, soccer,
lacrosse, and baseball.

Sports Camps and Outdoor Adventures
All Sports
Our Sports Camps appeal to male and female students of all ages and include
basketball, volleyball, soccer, lacrosse, and baseball. Sports camps are taught by
experienced coaches and seasoned athletes who are hand picked by the coaching
staff and are trained in both CPR and the NCS Emergency Response program. The
camps are open to five-year-olds to rising ninth graders, unless otherwise noted.
Baseball
Lacrosse
Baseball Camp
Beginners Lacrosse Camp
Baseball Camp is designed to provide
solid instruction in the fundamental
skills of baseball as well as a lot of fun on
the diamond. Emphasis is placed on the
correct mechanics in the skills of throwing,
catching, hitting, and running the bases.
These skills are reinforced through drills
and skill games to promote the proper
individual mechanics and a better
understanding of the flow of game-type
situations. Coach Eric Lawrence and his
staff have used this approach through 18
successful seasons at NCS. The camp is
held on the School’s eight-year-old baseball
facility.
Basketball
Boys’ Basketball
North Cross Basketball has a proud
tradition. Coach Ed. Green comes to
North Cross School after a storied career
spanning multiple decades. Campers are
put into appropriate age groups where
they work on all aspects of the game, with
an emphasis on shooting. Daily drills are
blended with scrimmages that provide
opportunity to put learned skills to work in
game-like situations. Campers walk away
with the fundamental skills necessary to
perform on a competitive level.

College. The beginners’ camp is for boys
and girls who are just getting started. There
are no pads in this camp. It’s all about basic
skills, starting with getting comfortable
with the stick. Passing and catching,
scooping ground balls, and cradling while
running with the ball are the heart of the
program. Non-contact competitive drills
will add some excitement to each day. All

softball, swimming, tennis, and basketball.
The camp is open to rising third graders up
to rising eighth graders.
Intermediate Boys’
Lacrosse Camp
The Intermediate Boys’ Lacrosse Camp
is for rising third to eighth grade boys
who have had at least a year of organized
lacrosse experience. NCS Lacrosse Coach
Chris Pollock, who also has years of
experience in the Roanoke area lacrosse
scene, and is a three-time All-American
at Roanoke College, will supervise the
coaching and camp activities. He draws
from area coaches and college players
to assemble a great staff to assist him.
The basic skills of throwing, catching,
cradling, fielding ground balls, and team
concepts are reinforced by repetitive
drills. Participants get to apply these skills
in simulated game-like situations. Some
equipment will be available for those
families not ready to make an investment in
a full set. All campers must bring a lacrosse
stick. Families interested in borrowing
equipment should contact Coach Pollock

Available for rising Kindergarten–ninth
graders, OrtonGillingham instruction is a
multisensory approach to teaching reading,
writing, and spelling skills that is tailored
to the individual needs of each student.
Tutoring is diagnostic, prescriptive,
sequential, and structured; it is designed
to directly teach and expand a student's
knowledge of the English language.
Language tutors with CrossWalk at North
Cross are members of the school’s teaching
staff and have extensive training in the
OrtonGillingham approach to remediating
language skills. All have completed, at a
minimum, associate level training and
have earned membership in the Academy
of OrtonGillingham Practitioners and
Educators or are working toward this
designation. Using a multisensory and
mastery based approach to the acquisition
of academic skills, students will work
toward successfully closing the gap
between their strong cognitive ability
and academic potential. Each session
is 60 minutes in length. A minimum
of two times a week for 10 sessions is
recommended. Space is limited. A nonrefundable deposit of $150 is required to
register for tutoring. Remaining payments
will be billed. For more information
contact Kit Prillaman at (540) 761-9119 or
kprillaman@northcross.org. Parents will be
contacted in May to schedule sessions.
