Communities

Origins: The Birth and Rise of Chinese American Communities in Los
Angeles creates a context for understanding Historic Chinatown,
New Chinatown and Monterey Park. Origins Online, an interactive
Website (origins.camla.org), facilitates further exploration and curation of emerging new communities in the San Gabriel Valley and
other Los Angeles locales. Origins marks the first addition to CAM’s
permanent galleries since the Museum opened in 2003. Working
closely with CAM, many community members researched and collected photographs and artifacts connecting these neighborhoods
into one continuum of Chinese American history united by a commitment to community empowerment.
Exhibit on view beginning December 14th. Visit www.camla.org
for more info.
The Great Chinatown
Hunt is On!
Get ready for a clue-solving adventure during the weekend
of Chinatown’s exciting Lunar New Year festivities! Search
for clues throughout this lively neighborhood of contrasts:
discover ancient traditions alongside experimental art; explore picturesque alleyways and traditional temples, bustling
shops and hidden courtyards. You’ll also be sent on two challenging Mini-Quests, where you must successfully complete
a series of unique tasks to win extra bonus points. Discover
the sights, smells and sounds of Asia...all right here in Los
Angeles! This hunt is moderately challenging.
Sunday, February 17 at 11 am / $35 per person. Register at
http://www.racela.com/cityrace_registration.html.
New Development
Updates
With regard to new residential developments in Chinatown,
both The Metro and the Jia, formerly known as Gateway, projects
are progressing as planned. The Metro provides affordable housing for seniors 55+ and will be obtaining its Certificate of Occupancy by the end of the month. It provides quality amenities for
its residents including community social space, an outdoor deck,
and well appointed interior furnishings. The Metro - Chinatown
Senior Lofts will be an art-focused residential community hoping
to foster the creative minds of its residents. The former Gateway
project has been renamed Jia, and will be ready to occupy by July
2013. Jia has also confirmed Starbucks as one of its merchants and
Starbucks will be occupying the 1700 sq ft corner space.
