Smith* *Appearing through the courtesy of Actors’ Equity Association TIME Then...and Now REGINALD ROSE (1920–2002) Reginald Rose is most famous as a television writer, acclaimed for his teleplays in the “Golden Age” of television. Born and raised in New York City, he lived there until he enlisted during World War II, returning to pursue a career in writing. Among other awards, Rose won three Emmys in his lifetime and was nominated for a total of six. Rose is most well known for writing teleplays. However, he also found success writing for the stage, as well as for regular television programming. Rose notably wrote teleplays for CBS’s “Studio One.” Plays include The Bus to Nowhere, 12:32 A.M., An Almanac of Liberty, Crime in the Streets, and Twelve Angry Men, Rose’s most known teleplay. Twelve Angry Men continued to have a remarkable life as a landmark film, greatly expanded upon from the original teleplay, and a successful stage play. Rose’s plays are known for their direct handling of social problems and the political arena, uncharacteristic of a medium usually preoccupied with private, interpersonal relationships. Rose’s work was unapologetic, confronting these issues directly. While dealing with social issues, Rose was known as a master craftsman for television, as displayed by his incredible mastery of naturalism in this “slice of life” medium. Twelve Angry Men’s success as a movie marked a major contribution of Rose and television for film, influencing the future of American cinematography. Drohan, Sean P. He also Co-Directed the Broadway production of Baby It’s You!, which premiered at The Playhouse. HISTORY Twelve Angry Men has had a long history of production and revision, from short teleplay to major Broadway productions. Reginald Rose first found inspiration for Twelve Angry Men when he served on a jury in a manslaughter case, over which the jurors fought bitterly for some eight hours. This became the impetus for the teleplay, Twelve Angry Men, which aired on CBS as a live one-hour drama. It was immediately successful and led to further development, culminating in its film version in 1957, starring Henry Fonda and directed by Sidney Lumet. It was first produced for the stage in 1964. It was filmed again for television in 1997, starring George C. Scott and Jack Lemmon, and first appeared on Broadway in 2004. Dramatically, Twelve Angry Men is an excellent example of the mid 20th-century American style of socially conscious, psychologically driven realism, depicting everyday individuals in everyday situations. In form, the play is a perfect piece of naturalism, occurring in real time and running continuously, even between acts, for the length of the drama. Historically, we can look at the play in the context of its original film release date, 1957. The United States was in a politically transitional time. The Civil Rights Movement was well underway with the Brown vs. Board of Education decision passed in 1954 and the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1956. Many of the themes of racial and social inequity being played out in the drama were being played out on the national scene. Drohan, Sean P. GradeSaver Classic Notes: 12 Angry Men. N.p.: Gradesaver LLC, 2012. ELIZABETH DORAN (Executive Director) hails from Patchogue, New York, where she began her career in theatre as a writer and performer. She earned her M.B.A. in Entrepreneurship and Strategy at Rensselaer in Troy, NY. She has served as Director of Finance and Planning for the La Jolla Playhouse, was Managing Director for Capital Repertory Theatre (a LORT regional theatre in Albany, NY), and most recently was Managing Director of Los Angeles’ own The Actor’s Gang. She and her husband, Kwinn Doran, a college professor and historian, have made themselves at home in South Pasadena with their two young sons, Giacomo and Ely, and welcomed a third child, Calypso. Tann - New Generations is a program that introduces theatre arts to traditionally underrepresented community groups that may otherwise never attend live theatre. As a Teaching Artist, I act as a guide who will usher them into this new experience. Jacey - I collect background information that gives a historical/social context for the play, production information and history, and interviews to create an Education Guide [available on our website] that enables the Teaching Artists to lead New Generations audiences into thinking more deeply about the play and production. Nicole - As a Teaching Artist, my job is best described as Edu-tainment! We would love it if New Generations participants understood the historical context, the jobs of everyone at the theatre, something about the playwright, and the process for designers, but it’s equally important that they have so much fun that they want to come back. Why is New Generations important? Tann - I’m a huge fan of the New Generations program because people need the arts in their lives to broaden their horizons and highlight the things we can all relate to despite external differences. Jacey - It’s essential for theatres to cultivate and welcome new audiences to remain vital and relevant. Nicole - And New Generations doesn’t just bring “butts in seats,” it gives participants context and an experience. We create a space where it’s safe to ask questions, analyze, compare, and express opinions. Robert - As a Teaching Artist, I get to create interactive educational experiences specific to each show, giving our guests a more immersive theatre experience. And it’s so much fun! How can The Playhouse community support New Generations? Nicole - New Generations has only been able to grow because of the generosity of donors, foundations, volunteers, staff, and our community. Donations of any size go a long way to significantly increase the number of participants who can see a show and support the availability of trained Teaching Artists who are able to meet with groups. Jacey - The Pasadena Playhouse’s commitment to diversity is an extremely important mission. We don’t have a history in this country of significant public/government support of the arts, so it’s important for individuals to support the organizations that are important and valuable to them—like The Pasadena Playhouse and our New Generations program. Tann - Please encourage interested groups to reach out to New Generations. And when you have a free moment, stop by to tell the groups what happens in the Box Office or what a stage manager does before, during, and after a show. Nicole - And it’s totally OK if you see a group and want to listen to what they’re talking about. It’s really great for the participants to see other people showing interest in what they’re learning about. What do you have planned for Twelve Angry Men? Tann - As I study people and how they process the world around them, I’ve learned to better understand individuals and why we do what we do as people and as artists. I know this analytical and creative approach will come in handy when we discuss a few popular homicide trials, real and fictional, and what seems to influence a verdict. Nicole - I can imagine you’ll see some serious mock trials in the courtyard during the month of November! Robert - I’m excited to put our groups in the jurors’ shoes. Mock Trials for everyone! For more information, please contact Outreach & Education Manager/Artistic Associate Courtney Harper at charper@pasadenaplayhouse.org or 626-204-7388. Pasadena Playhouse Alumni & Associates Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman met as students at the Pasadena Playhouse College of Theatre Arts in the 1950’s, but it wasn’t until the 2003 motion picture “Runaway Jury” that they appeared onscreen opposite each other. Alumni Henry Darrow (’56) and Elliott Street (’69) also appeared in the film. If you dig deep in the special features section of the DVD version of that film, you will find an extended interview with Hackman and Hoffman as they discuss their time at our College of Theatre Arts. Though the school has been closed for many years, Pasadena Playhouse Alumni & Associates is still a vital organization with nearly 300 members around the world. PPA&A publishes a quarterly newsletter to help our members stay in touch with their classmates and keep up to date with the events at The Playhouse. Following our 60th Diamond Jubilee brunch meeting on June 9, 2013, a bronze plaque commemorating our school was dedicated in the courtyard of The Playhouse. PPA&A is most proud of our scholarship program for theatre students with financial needs. Thanks to a generous endowment from alumnus Henry Sumid (’40), PPA&A has bestowed college scholarships with an aggregate value of $155,000. Please visit www.sumidscholarship.com for more information on our scholarship program for theatre students. www.ppa-a.org AMBASSADORS OF THE PASADENA PLAYHOUSE At our Ambassadors meeting in September, Playhouse Artistic Director Sheldon Epps spoke about his decision to present the classic play Twelve Angry Men. Epps said Stoneface: The Rise and Fall and Rise of Buster Keaton was to be postponed and he wanted to offer an equally topical and exciting production in its place. He awoke one morning with almost a vision and Twelve Angry Men became the clear path ahead. We have often compared Epps to Playhouse Founder Gilmor Brown, and now we wonder if they are communicating! As we anticipate this great play, we also look forward to greeting many new ticket holders. Our subscriber family has grown over 25% and we are thrilled to heartily welcome each and every guest. Contact Peggy Ebright at pebright33@aol.com to learn more about the Ambassadors. Friends of The Pasadena Playhouse In addition to volunteering their time and contributing money, the Friends of The Pasadena Playhouse purchase necessary items for The Playhouse staff. During 2013, purchases included a new refrigerator for Concessions, a new camera for the Lobby monitor, a new video camera, new carpeting for the Box Office, a new iPad for the Company Manager, and refurbished Listening Devices. These items all help enhance the theatre experience. On October 12, 2013, the Friends held their third annual Bazaar and generated money to help make purchases like these. An enthusiastic crowd bought jewelry, holiday pieces, white elephant items, and baked goods in the Courtyard. The funds from the Donation Box in the Lobby also help the Friends buy items for The Playhouse. Your donations are always appreciated. Please visit our website at www.friendsofthepasadenaplayhouse.org for more information on how to become a Friend. Wednesday, November 6, 7:00–7:30 p.m. Join us prior to the Wednesday performance for a very special Twelve Angry Men event. Wednesday, November 20, 7:00–7:30 p.m. Come watch as a Twelve Angry Men special guest is put on the HOTSEAT. Sunday, November 24, after the 2:00 p.m. showing of Twelve Angry Men Join us for a talk-back, question-andanswer session with members of Twelve Angry Men. For more information, please contact Chief Experience Officer Stacey Castillo at scastillo@pasadenaplayhouse.org. The Pasadena Playhouse’s Outreach, Education & Audience Engagement programs and events are supported in part by the Wells Fargo Theatrical Diversity Project and by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
