Whanganui is one of New Zealand’s most
interesting and distinctive places to visit with a
rich cultural heritage and vibrant arts scene.
We hope you enjoy your stay and take the time to
explore, get to know us and our beautiful
landscape, history and people.
The Whanganui River, Te Awa o Whanganui,
is the longest navigable river in New Zealand and
an integral part of our district, shaping the
development, settlement and history of both early
Māori and European settlers. Blessed with an
abundance of natural attributes, unspoilt native
forest, a temperate climate with above average
sunshine hours and stunning west coast beaches,
Whanganui has attracted visitors and residents
over the ages.
We are big enough to entertain with a multitude
of outdoor, cultural activities and events and yet
small enough to keep it real.
Our manaakitanga (hospitality) is legendary and
we keep it casual and friendly.
You may notice the two different spellings –
Wanganui and Whanganui. The district has used
both spellings since the mid-1800’s as local iwi
pronounciation makes the ‘wh’ sound similar to
‘what’ and ‘where.’ European settlers then wrote
the name as they heard it. Both names were
recognised in Parliament in 2012 and it is now a
matter of choice.

Whanganui’s Story
As one of New Zealand’s oldest towns you cannot explain
Whanganui without understanding a little of its history.
Māori History
Established at the river mouth in 1840 and originally named
Petre by European settlers, Whanganui means ‘big bay’ or
‘big harbour’. With such a forgiving climate and bountiful
supplies Whanganui was declared a city in 1924 and was NZ’s
5th largest city until 1936.

Ko au te awa, ko te awa ko au.’
A military garrison was installed in 1846 with the last garrison
leaving in early 1870. By the early 1900’s business in Whanganui
was booming. The Whanganui River tourist trade took off, with
thousands of passengers being transported on Alexander
Hatrick’s riverboat fleet up ‘The Rhine of New Zealand’.
Hatrick made the river accessible to everybody: rich tourists,
settlers and farmers in the interior and Whanganui citizens.
Whanganui thrived as it serviced a huge fertile agricultural
catchment area, rearing sheep and cattle, as well as growing
barley, wheat, oats, maize, fruit and timber.
Boasting a number of New Zealand ‘firsts’, original sporting
clubs and organisations, the bi‑cultural heritage of Whanganui
is obvious in the town buildings, galleries and museums. This
rich cultural and natural environment has created the
charming place and numerous attractions you visit today.

‘The great river flows
From the mountains to the sea
I am the river, the river is me.’
This whakatauki (proverb) defines the iwi (Māori) of the
Whanganui River and region. From the sacred mountains of the
Central Plateau, the Whanganui River begins its journey of
nearly 300km and is eventually released into the Tasman Sea,
off the western coastline of Whanganui. Along its length
the people of Te Ātihaunui‑a‑Pāpārangi (Whanganui iwi) have
lived for over 40 generations.
Our district boundaries fall across the ancestral boundaries
of Tamaūpoko and Tūpoho on the river, the South Taranaki iwi,
Ngā Rauru Kītahi and Ngāti Apa of the Rangitikei. Customs,
tikanga (protocol) and values including manaakitanga
(hospitality) and kaitiakitanga (guardianship) emphasise the
affinity of Māori with their ancestral landscapes and culture.

Cemetery Circuit Motorcycle Street Races
Of international fame and over 60 years old, this is the
Southern Hemisphere’s ‘TT Isle of Man’ and it captures the
hearts and minds of motorcycle enthusiasts and spectators
everywhere! Formula 1, BEARS, classics and side cars,
international and national legends, this street circuit is one
mile long with eight corners, one railway crossing, an
over‑bridge and blind ‘S’ bends beside the old Whanganui
cemetery. If you have just a sniff of petrolhead in you, you
won’t want to miss this. Held Boxing Day every year.

NZ Masters Games (2015)
Centred at the Games Village in Springvale Park, this
ten-day event comprises more than 55 different sports and 2400
individual events as well as nightly entertainment. With

Whanganui and Dunedin.

Billy Webb Challenge
The Billy Webb Challenge is held annually on the Whanganui
River with an Allcomers Race for Single Scullers. From a mass
start both men and women will race in various categories in the
only long distance rowing race in New Zealand. The Billy Webb
Challenge was established to relive the original Billy Webb
world title race in 1908 a year after the Whanganui man won
NZ’s first ever world sculling title. Big crowds line the riverbank
to watch the competition which has attracted past and present
Olympic champions. The “Corporate 8’s” have been added to the
event with local businesses battling it out on the river - no more
than two experienced rowers are allowed to make up each team.

some of the best in the world, but our
outstanding reputation is as the home of New
Zealand glass art with over 40 practicing glass
artists - the highest concentration in New
Zealand, with many exporting overseas.
A thriving theatre and music scene round off this
artistic city - if you can’t find it in Whanganui it
doesn’t exist! From traditional choir to brass, jazz
to contemporary - most nights you will find
somewhere with music and song to suit young
and old.
Heritage buildings from many eras are a major
feature of Whanganui. Victorian and Edwardian
treasures co‑exist with fine examples of
mid‑twentieth century modern architecture.

War Memorial Centre
A radical departure from the norm when built in 1955 to 1960,
the War Memorial Centre is recognised as one of the finest
examples of New Zealand modernist architecture. A venue
for all events it is also a living War Memorial and home to the
Book of Remembrance, an antique artillery Krupp Gun and
the exquisite stained glass window. Visitors are welcome.

Royal Wanganui Opera House
A landmark cultural icon and one of the few surviving
buildings of its type in the Southern Hemisphere. It remains a
fully functioning theatre with an ongoing programme of

and a reminder of Whanganui’s love of performing arts.

building that was originally home to the city’s newspaper. View
the glassblowers at work then wander up to a mezzanine retail
area to browse the stunning pieces on display. For the more

Glass artist David Traub’s working studio is open all year by
appointment. Originally from New York, David’s passion for glass
sees his work exhibited around the world and in 10 galleries in
New Zealand. Visitors can discuss David’s work, ideas and
techniques with him and view the Kitchen Gallery: displays of
glass artwork for viewing or purchase. David holds introductory
Kiln Glass workshops during the year, and organizes special
workshops for small groups by request.
McNamara Gallery Photography represents a large number of
New Zealand and some International photographers. It is
dedicated to exhibiting and promoting lens-based media,
and exploring the range of practice, both materially and
conceptually. In addition to our regular programme, we have so
far produced 29 out-reach exhibitions for public galleries around
NZ. The aim of these is to increase the visibility of, and
contribute to the conversations around, the medium.

Historic Riverboat Wairua. Built at Poplar London UK by Yarrow &

The Wanganui War Memorial Centre is a highly sought after
multi-purpose venue right in the heart of Wanganui CBD. Three
venues that can cater for groups from 10 to 1300 people from
business meetings, conferences,expos, show groups and formal
dinners. The Main Hall boasts one of the largest sprung dance
floors in New Zealand. the Concert Chamber enjoys tiered
seating for 370 while the Pioneer Room is excellent for weddings
meetings and more.

This whakatauki (saying) recognises the
relationship of the Whanganui people to the river
which has woven their histories together and
continues to provide a focal point for life here.
Used traditionally by Whanganui iwi (the Māori
word for people bound together by common
ancestry), the words have become adopted by the
wider Whanganui community to embrace their
greater relationship with the river which flows
from the mountains to the sea.
The Whanganui River and surrounding valley was
an important pathway and settlement area prior
to European settlement and expanded as a travel
route in the late 1880’s and early 1900’s. Riverboats
became a popular adventure for visitors from
overseas.
Today the Whanganui River and natural environs
still attract visitors from all over the world. There
are a multitude of opportunities for walking,
cycling, hunting and hiking in native forest. Water
tours and activities are equally as popular with
options of jet boat tours, canoeing and kayaking,
guided or solo, from Taumaranui in the upper
reaches to the sea at Whanganui. A visit to the
Bridge to Nowhere is a popular day trip.
By road, the Whanganui River Road is a scenic
driving, walking and cycling route and part of the
Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail. Stunning views,
beautiful marae and unique places of historical
interest make this a memorable trip.

The Bridge to Nowhere
Travelling the scenic Whanganui River Road from
Tieke Marae
the city to Pipiriki takes a leisurely 2 to 4 hours
depending on your choice of stops and photo
opportunities. This is an authentic journey back in
time. Local iwi heritage, remnants of early
European settlement and historic landmarks
feature amongst the stunning views.

Puraroto caves
Look out for St Mary’s Church at Upokongaro famous
for its unusual 3-sided spire. Stop at the Aramoana
Summit at 230 metres above sea level to look down the
river and out to Mount Ruapehu. Don’t miss the
amazing Oyster Cliffs on the side of the road where
layers of fossilised oysters lined sea beds and can now be
seen. Travel through the historic and beautiful marae
and villages of Ātene, Koriniti and Matahiwi – please
ask for permission before visiting a marae as these are
treasured places.

Rānana is the next community as you travel through
to Hiruharama (Jerusalem), previously home to two
historically famous figures, Mother Mary Joseph
(Suzanne Aubert), and acclaimed New Zealand poet
James K. Baxter. Halfway to Pipiriki there’s a great
photo opportunity of the Omorehu Waterfall and then
before you know it you’ll be at Pipiriki – our gateway
to Whanganui National Park and the famous ‘Bridge to
Nowhere’.

Whanganui National Park
Whanganui is one of the gateway’s to the pristine and beautiful
Whanganui National Park which has at its heart the
Whanganui River - Te Awa o Whanganui.
Of all of New Zealand’s national parks, Whanganui National
Park is most closely associated with human settlement. It is
dissected by the Whanganui River, the longest continually
navigable river in the country. Although the bed and waters of
the river are not part of the park, it is an integral part of the
landscape and provides an important access way into and
through the park.
The park protects one of the largest remaining tracts of
lowland forest remaining in the North Island, and it provides
habitat for a wide variety of native wildlife.
The park contains extensive stands of podocarp-hardwood
lowland forest. This extensive forest comprises many different
communities reflecting changes from north to south, riverside
to high ridges. Large northern rata occur throughout the park
forming a spectacular display in mid summer.

visitors to the region. The Matemateaonga Track traverses
between Taranaki and the Whanganui River. Using an old

The Mangapurua and Kaiwhakauka Tracks pass through the
historic Mangapurua and Kaiwhakauka Valleys.
These valleys were rehabilitation settlements where land was
offered to soldiers following World War I. The tracks are two
stages of the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail.
The Ātene Viewpoint Walk is an enjoyable outing for the entire
family and provides one of the few places where the public can
easily access the Whanganui National Park while the Ātene
Skyline Track offers a more challenging tramp.
The popular 145 km Whanganui Journey, one of 9 Great Walks,
from Taumarunui to Pipiriki takes an average of 5 days to
complete by canoe on the Whanganui River. A shorter 3 day
journey from Whakahoro to Pipiriki is also available.
The isolated reaches of the park support a range of birds. The
park is home to the largest population of North Island brown
kiwi in New Zealand. Whio (blue duck) inhabits the clean

Whanganui is a place made for cyclists and walkers from those
wanting a challenge to a more leisurely traverse around the
town, river and beaches.
For dedicated hikers the Ātene Viewpoint and Skyline Tracks
provide a challenge and beautiful scenery overlooking a cut‑off
loop of the old Whanganui River bed.
Cycle parts of the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail or just select a
route of your own from the shared pathways and walkways.
Accommodation packages, cycle hire and transfers are available
for the longer sections or the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail or
just hire a bike for a few hours around the town – it’s up to you.
Enjoy your time discovering our natural environment. Please

Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail

The Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail is the
most diverse in NZ. With a range of
sections in Ruapehu, the final stages
travel down the Whanganui River Road,
through the natural and cultural heritage
of the Māori and early Europeans.
Carry on into the city along boardwalks
and past art on the riverbank to where
the river meets the Tasman Sea.
Whanganui River Road before traversing all the way to the
Tasman Sea through the boardwalks and paths of urban
Whanganui.
The full trail takes approximately 5 days so have some fun and
do it over a couple of weekends as you take the time to enjoy
mountain views, historic railway viaducts, a visit to the Bridge
to Nowhere, canoeing the Whanganui River and the richness of
natural and cultural heritage along the Whanganui River Road.
Engage with locals, absorb the serenity and history as you cycle
alongside the Whanganui River through the small settlements

Set rurally 11kms from the centre of Whanganui, Bason Botanic
Gardens covers 25 hectares and is rated a ‘Garden of
Significance’ by the New Zealand Gardens Trust.

Bushy Park Reserve Bushy Park Reserve is a 100 hectare native forest sanctuary
kept predator‑free for native birds and is ranked one of
Australasia’s ‘Top 25’ Restoration Projects.
There are 3.4km of easy all‑weather walking tracks throughout
the forest and a huge variety of bird life and species of trees.
Bellbirds, kereru, saddlebacks, hihi, moreporks, pukeko,
kingfishers and white‑faced heron are just some you may see.
Don’t miss ‘Ratanui’, believed to be the biggest northern rata, 43
metres high with a girth of more than 11 metres with an age of
between 500 and 1000 years.
While you’re there, visit the 22 room 1906 Edwardian‑era
homestead and enjoy a picnic.

collections in New Zealand and unique conservatory
archictecture. Its history is that of a magnanimous gift from
Stanley and Blanche Bason to the Wanganui City in 1966.

Virginia Lake / Rotokawau Reserve Virginia Lake is a beautiful destination and again a popular
setting for weddings. Take a 25 minute woodland walk around
the lake, spy Peter Pan’s statue and enjoy the birdlife, both on

Kowhai Park, James MacGregor Memorial Park & Arboretum On the banks of the Whanganui River, Kowhai Park is for
small and big kids alike! Parents that played there while young

Museum, War Memorial Centre, Alexander and Davis Libraries
and the Veterans Steps leading to the original Sarjeant Gallery

Gifted to the city by the Alexander family, the gardens are
opposite Kowhai Park on Anzac Parade. The seasonal
display of over 600 roses is stunning and the pergola is popular

Beaches
With so much happening in and around Whanganui and
further up the Whanganui River you can be forgiven for
sometimes forgetting that Whanganui is on the coast.
From natural colours to black iron sand, our west coast beaches
have plenty of room to play on land and in the sea. Favourite
places for families, fishing, beachcombers and wide open walks.
Castlecliff Beach
A short drive from the city, Whanganui’s beach suburb has
always been popular with residents and visitors. A day at the
beach could be had by catching the tramway system from the
city centre in Whanganui’s early years.
Patrolled swimming, a well-established motor camp,
playgrounds and a skate park nearby provide an easy and
convenient access to the beach. A wonderful walk can be
had at low tide to the far cliffs.
South Beach
Kai Iwi Beach
A safe beach for the whole family and all ocean activities,
Kai Iwi is reached via Rapanui Road 14kms west of Whanganui.
Patrolled during the summer you can swim, fish, laze in
the sun, go for long walks and pick through the driftwood.
A well-established motor camp is located in the Mowhanau
village, with a children’s playground, toilet block and
wood-burning BBQ’s available as well. Book early for your
summer holiday, spend a weekend or a day.
For the surfers…
Our west coast beaches can provide great rides for surf
enthusiasts of all abilities. A southerly swell provides
great conditions at the Whanganui River mouth or across
the river at the wilder South Beach.
Castlecliff Beach, just north of the river mouth offers
three main beach breaks that perform well at high tide and is
Whanganui’s prime surfing beach.
South Beach is renowned for its excellent fishing and surfing
and needs 4WD to access the actual beach. Otherwise parking
is possible nearby with a short walk to the beach through
the dunes. Take care at all times and watch the tides as South
Beach is great fun, but an unpatrolled area.

Fishing
A fishing paradise for those in the know. River fishing, surf
casting and sea fishing can all be catered for here. Major sea
fishing competitions are held throughout the year including
Wellington Anniversary Weekend in January and the Easter
break. Check our events calendar. Charter boats are available
throughout the year.
Everyone in NZ is required by law to have a current licence
when fishing for freshwater sportsfish such as rainbow and
brown trout and perch. Treble hooks are not permitted in our
region.
Whanganui River
Both rainbow and brown trout are present in the river however
brown trout dominate and provide the best sport. All legal
lures and baits can be used. Sea run brown trout can be caught
within city limits but the further upstream you travel the
better the fishing becomes.
Lake Wiritoa, Lake Kohata and Lake Pauri
These are three coastal dune lakes a few minutes south of
Whanganui. Lake Wiritoa is stocked annually with
well-conditioned two year old rainbow trout from the Rotorua
Hatchery. Open year round except for the May and June
duck hunting season, the best time to fish in the summer is the
early morning and evenings.
Other Activities & Attractions49
Lake Kohata is more secluded and accessible only by foot. A
perch fishery administered by Fish and Game NZ. Perch are
tasty, white fleshed sportsfish that are relatively easy to catch
yet also put up a good fight. Also closed for the duck hunting
season. Dogs are not permitted.
Lake Pauri is 3km south of the Lake Wiritoa turn-off on Pauri
Road and another perch fishery. Access is available at a fence
stile and sign otherwise permission is required from the
surrounding landowners.
Mangawhero River
Forty-five minutes up SH4 brings you to the spectacular
Raukawa Waterfall at Kakatahi. The brown trout fishery begins
half a kilometre upstream with 1.5kg fish regularly taken.
Permission must be sought prior to crossing private land. The
river closes on June 30 for the spawning season.
