Take a quick peek at where your adventures begin. Discover Heritage and Treasures Here Deep within the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, you’ll discover a unique heritage and cultural treasures that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. From mountain music and Appalachian crafts to ancient Cherokee traditions, you’ll see why this region has the honor of being called the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area. Visit blueridgeheritage.com to learn more about the treasures you’ll discover here. Preservation of place, culture and tradition The indigenous Cherokee people readily shared their tradition of crafting techniques with the region’s early Scots-Irish settlers – including weaving baskets out of honeysuckle vines and firing clay into beautiful blackware pottery. The early settlers used their newly acquired skills to develop a utilitarian form of art and craft that continues to this day through the hands of mountain craftsmen and Native American artisans. When the settlers and Cherokee found time to celebrate, they did so with song and dance, forging even more unique cultural traditions. Mountain music was born of hand-carved fiddles, dulcimers, and banjos that were used to play jigs, ballads, and love songs from the settlers’ homeland. Mountain dance was soon to follow, as Scottish sword dancing, Irish step dancing and Cherokee buck dancing combined to create mountain clogging. These forms of music and dance are still performed in competitions and festivals throughout the region. There’s a gazillion things to do in the North Carolina Smokies. If you happen to be a fan, this is your byway. Winding 98 miles and featuring more than 200 distinct waterfalls, it begins at U.S. 64’s intersection with N.C. 215. Where it ends is likely somewhere far deeper within you. 2 Nantahala Byway The Cherokee used “Nantahala” to mean “Land of the Noonday Sun.” Why noonday? Well, likely for the steep walls that frame the Nantahala Gorge, an impressive site you’ll tour as part of this swirling byway. Nearby, the Nantahala River has become legendary for its whitewater. Just depart from Marble, head east, and don’t stop until you pass Wesser. 3 Cherohala Skyway 5 Whitewater Way Esquire magazine said “It’s like driving through a car commercial.” Connecting the Cherokee National Forest to the Nantahala National Forest, this clean, smooth highway encourages you to open up your sports car or pause your RV for a sandwich and the beautiful sights. And the skyway vs. byway bit? Once you drive it, you’ll understand. Quick: You have three guesses as to what you’ll encounter on this scenic byway. The aptly named Whitewater Way is named for Whitewater Falls, which is the tallest example east of the Rockies. Take N.C. 281 and hike the many trails leading to spectacular rushing water. Bathroom breaks are a must. 4 6 Indian Lakes Scenic Byway Where N.C. 28 meets U.S. 29, fans of crystalline lakes (especially those featuring Indian names) will find their calling. Just leave what’s known as “The Dragon” and discover the first landmark, Fontana Dam. From there, you’ll have a hard time watching the road as you pass Fontana Village, Stecoah, and its meandering end at the Tennessee border. 30 ncdot.gov/travel/scenic/ Forest Heritage Scenic Byway If, like Joyce Kilmer, you think that you “shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree,” it’s time to put down the poetry book and start your engines for the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway. Take off on U.S. 276 North from Brevard to see The Cradle of Forestry, the Pink Beds, and Shining Rock Wilderness. 31 – 1 0 12 up –2 d C . rl .N o T W arta, NC , ty Ci 1 3 – up 3 . 0 n –2 ld C , N.C so y y r or n Cit iver B W yso la R – a Br – 2 ah 2 1 nt p a N 7-9 t. –20ld Cu.N. ep or ford, T er W art iv H on e ig P R S -30 8 .2 g Au rk Fo y 6 ne 4-2 Ca 2 g. If you can’t wait until next year (we don’t blame you), you can get your whitewater fix at the final event of the 2012 Canoe Freestyle World Cup, Sept. 7-9 at the Nantahala Gorge. 32 33 Directory This guide is published by Smoky Mountain Host, a regional non-profit organization designed to promote tourism in North Carolina’s seven westernmost counties.
