ISSUE 2015 - 3 UNITED STATES SUBMARINE VETERANS, INC., GROTON BASE BOAT NOTES PAGE 3 COMMANDER’S CORNER ~ AL KINSALL Shipmates – First I would like to thank USSVI Groton Base for re-electing me as Base Commander. I only hope I can live up to your standards and fulfill your demands in making Groton Base profitable and the place for members to feel proud of. It has been a very full spring with preparations for the Anniversary Celebration which took place from 30 April through 2 May 2015. Everyone who attended had a great time and are looking forward to next year’s events so they can come back to where their Submarine experience all began. In addition we conducted our Groton Base HOLLAND Club Induction Ceremony on 6 June 2015 on SUBASE in Dealey Center. U. S. Congressman Joe Courtney was the guest speaker surround by over 450 sub school sailors in the balcony. It was awesome and the members who were inducted have something they can talk about for years to come. The Annual Appeal is progressing very nicely. On behalf of the Executive Committee I want to thank all who have donated to the "CLUB SUPPORT FUND." Without your donation we would not be able to do what needs to be done to our building. That said, we have started clubhouse electrical repairs. We plan to have all electrical repairs completed by late fall so it doesn't interfere with daily operations of the Base and Club/Bar. I'm hoping we can also do the masonry repairs to the foundation that was identified during the building inspection. Coming events until the next issue are the, USSVI National Convention in Pittsburgh PA, CO/XO/COB dinner we host for all boats on the River and under construction at Electric Boat, and of course our Thanksgiving event at the end of November. I am pleased to announce that we have a new Membership Chairman. He is on Active Duty, an instructor at the Sub Base. HIs name is Chris "Remi" Remiesiewicz. All inquiries regarding membership should be addressed to him at membership_chair@subvetsgroton.org or 860.333.0530. Have a great summer. We express our gratitude for their service by our remembrance of them. Take a moment now . . . and in silence breathe a prayer for our absent shipmates. Daniel J. Curran Sr., 74, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2015. Daniel joined the navy in 1959 and qualified in submarines on the USS Pargo SSN 650. He also served on the USS Greenling SSN 614. Your guessing drill commences, "am I dead or still alive?" You pace the flooded decks with scorn Trumpetfish (SS 425), USS Corsair (SS 435) and the USS Proteus (AS 19). Into realms of Rex you've stepped, and here you'll make your stand. To live your life, as sailors must, at the bottom of the sea, There's one you'll have to reckon-that one, my friend, is thee. Will your conscience do you justice when the final muster's in? Did you lead the kind of life you should in every port you've been? "There is a port of no return, where ships may ride at anchor for a little space. And then some starless night the cable slips, leaving only an eddy at the mooring place. Gulls veer no longer, Sailor rest your oar. No tangled wreckage will be washed ashore." Shipmates Curran, Bracknell, Padgett, Deane and Hawes - Rest your oar. Of sailormen from Cannes to Singapore. So, when your day for mast rolls 'Round. The choice is up to you, sailor chart your course of life right now. Chart it straight and true. Now's the time to flood your tanks and trim up 'fore and aft. It's a trifle Late when the klaxon sounds to square away your craft. Your final billet Lies below, on "Old Ocean's" floor. So, be ready when that last word's Passed. Sailor, rest your oar! ISSUE 2015 - 3 UNITED STATES SUBMARINE VETERANS, INC., GROTON BASE BOAT NOTES PAGE 7 NOTES FROM THE PERMITTEE ~ SHARON FORET Hello, Members: Please welcome our newest bartender, Jake. Jake is former Navy and very experienced pouring the suds and keeping customers happy. He’s already building a following here at the clubhouse. He’s hosting game nights and Sunday brunches so far. He makes a fine addition to a wonderful team working here. We’d love to expand the evening grill-open days, but can only do so with your continued support. Let us know what you like, or what you’d like to see us cook, and we’ll do our best to make new ideas happen! Also welcome Ray, our evening cook. Ray has been VOLUNTEERING his time for a couple months as our lunch cook. He’s been bringing some great ideas to the menu while he’s been training and learning skills for his future. Together, we’ve opened two nights a week: Wednesdays, and Fridays: when Ray is cooking specialty HappyTizers and dinners. The evening menu changes as we get new ideas. The evening menus offer such things as: a slider triothe trio varies: burger, pulled pork, chicken, shrimp. We also have a small fryer to make French fries, onion rings, fried pickles, and lots of amazingly tasty treats. As always, the back dining room (Pump Room holds 64) and upstairs hall (Topsidemax capacity 180) are available to rent for parties and events such as pinnings, retirements, re-enlistments, Wives halfway nights, and reunions. Topside rental is only $100, and Pump room is just $35. There is an $80 cleaning deposit to hold either room for the date you want, and you’ll get it back if you clean it to standard. Just call and talk with Tom or Sharon to pencil in the date for your event. We’re looking for members who are interested in starting a dart league at the club. If you know how to play and would be interested in leading the group, we’d love to have you. Talk to Tom or Sharon and we’ll get it all together. We also open the back dining room, at no charge, for lunch meetings for groups. All we ask is that you establish a recurring date and we will be prepared for your large or small group when you arrive. Just a reminder that chili is available for purchase as takeout- just for dinner, for parties, and even for deployments in gunboat size (approx. 6 gallons). Call ahead and Tom will make the secret SubVets recipe for your event. We are approaching football season- and just like last year, we do have Sunday, Monday, and Thursday night football on our TVs. (The house committee is preparing to hang our newly donated 70” screen!) There will be drink and food specials including our traditional Sunday Game day- Game day where we have different game meats cooked between the two football games on Sundays. We invite all our hunting members to participate and donate some of their dear, bear, fish, rabbit, etc. Come on down and show the staff how to cook your special dish with your special catch, while we enjoy some slightly rowdy camaraderie and football! See you at the Clubhouse. Has been quite a year. First...Thank you again for the support of the Honor Detail. As usual, when asked to be there, you were. When we are not able to directly attend, we send a letter of condolence and an Eternal Patrol certificate to the survivor. An additional effort we perform is recognition of the boats returning from an extended operation. The RED HATS are there to provide a 7 gun cannon salute. So far we have not received any return fire. That is a good thing. As in past years, the Chaplain provides Invocations and Benedictions or prayers at many functions at numerous and various ceremonies in the area. Each week members who are either on the Binnacle list, Sunshine list, or the Rest and Recovery list are mentioned in the Commander's notes. They welcome calls and visits. This event is conducted so that the students and future submariners, including the family members present, are exposed to this time honored ceremony of the Submarine Force. During the Tolling of the Boats ceremony, the designated SUBVETS representative has a brief opportunity to talk to the students to tell them of the significance of the ceremony. These programs are very important for us as an organization and for the students learning an important piece of their heritage. At each BESS graduation, the SUBVETS representative presents a “Challenge Coin” and a Heritage Award certificate to the graduating BESS class leader. We provide a SUBVETS representative for a variety of functions at SUBSCHOOL, including BESS (Basic Enlisted Submarine School), SOAC (Submarine Officer Advanced Class), and SOBC (Submarine Officer Basic Course) Graduations. I wish to give my personal thanks to our shipmates who have acted as either a participant in the Tolling of the Boats, or as guest speakers. Through the support of these volunteers and others we are able to man the watch bill and provide these valuable services at our Submarine School. In addition, we also provide speakers for the (Machinist Mate, weapons) what we commonly call TMA, and the SCERF (Submarine Communications Electronic The BESS Graduations are usually held every other Friday at 0900. Location is Wilkinson Hall. SOAC and SOBC graduations are held at Bledsoe Hall when scheduled. The TMA, SECF and SCERF graduations are varied and scheduled as needed. SUBMARINE QUALIFICATION RECOGNITION PROGRAM We would like the opportunity to recognize your sailors with our SQRP, but to do so we need your support and involvement. On meeting night (first Monday of every month except when it falls on a holiday), the crew members show up before the meeting starts at 1830. Usually the COB, CO, other crew members and family accompany them. We conduct the SQRP at the very start of the meeting. The CO and COB say a few words if desired. We need you or one of your Chief Petty Officers to tell us that you would like to recognize crew members who recently Qualified in Submarines at an upcoming meeting. We need a list of the individuals including their full names and rates/ ranks at least one week prior to the meeting that we will be recognizing your sailors so that way we can prepare a certificate for them. We all sound off our names and boat and year that we qualified. When the sailors hear some of the Qualification years it really hits them. We are usually done by 1900 so all can depart, or proceed downstairs to enjoy our facilities. Anyone can stay for rest of the meeting. Boats just returning from deployments are the ideal candidates - with numerous crew members who Attention COs and COBs Do you know about USSVI Groton Base’s Submarine Qualification and Recognition Program (SQRP)? received their dolphins for us to recognize. We look forward to recognizing your sailors. If you are in port when our meetings are scheduled give the Base Commander a call and allow us to recognize your sailors. If you are not the CO, or COB reading this, please show them a copy or bring it to their attention so that we can recognize your shipmates for their efforts and welcome them as “Brothers and Sisters of the Phin” WHO CAN YOU SIGN UP AS A NEW MEMBER? In spite of all your efforts and support a motorcycle plate is not to be. The new Commissioner and his staff did revisit our request concluding once again that it was not cost effective to create a motorcycle special interest plate. The decision was based on the following: ~ There are about 200 special interest license plates, but no special interest motorcycle plates. Creating a motorcycle plate for us will open the door for others to request a motorcycle plate for their organization. ~ The materials for the plates are very costly and have a shelf life. The per unit cost becomes very high In the case of low demand, projected or actual. ~ Our population and demand is small. The Long Island Plate number in excess of 50,000 plates, the new Red Sox’s plate [first issued in mid-2014] is already over 25,000. We in comparison are just over 700 plates. ~ When the CT Silent Service vehicle plate was created the criteria was a minimum of 200 committed requests to create the plate. Now the criteria is a minimum of 400 requests. This precludes us from forcing the issue through requests. The Commissioner appreciates and supports the Veteran and their organizations. They took great pains to explain that fact as they explained their decision. Again, thank one and all for your efforts and support. A SS motorcycle plate just wasn’t to be. The above all aside, there is still the vehicle SS license plate. If you don’t have one you need one. If you have one it is time for a second one. Just a reminder that if a Member has more than one class of vehicle registered in Connecticut one can have the same plate marker designation on each vehicle. The Connecticut vehicle classes are passenger, commercial, combination, camp trailer, and camper. If you have more than one class of vehicle registered in Connecticut you could have the same vanity plate markings with the Silent Service special interest background on each vehicle. The prohibition is having the same marker designation on more than one vehicle of the same class. I.E. Two passenger class vehicles with the same marker is prohibited. Thanks for your continued support, your service to our great country and all that you do. CLUBHOUSE CLEANUP Our club gets cleaned thanks to our shipmates on the Saturday Morning Cleanup Crew who continually donate time every weekend to clean our clubhouse and keep it looking good for our members and guests. The club belongs to the membership, but cleanup of the club is done by only a small handful of hard-working, dedicated volunteers. handful of hard-working, dedicated volunteers. We can always use more volunteers on a regular basis to clean. You don’t have to be there every Saturday, just when you can. Cleanup starts around 7am and is usually completed by 10am for our 11am opening. The clubhouse belongs to the membership, and at Groton Base we are very fortunate in that we are the only USSVI Base with its own clubhouse, even 51 years after the organization was formed. Emails from the moms of two Kids we visited: “Thank you so much for visiting Jake at CCMC. Your visit was the most positive experience during his stay there. We will be sure to make a special trip to the museum this summer. Thanks again. Anna “My 11 year old daughter is going through Chemo at Smilow at Yale New Haven Hospital. I just wanted to thank you for all your support. She loved seeing the veterans and she especially loved the cap!! Thank you, Liz Our first 2015 Kap(SS)4Kid(SS) visit was to Bridgeport Hospital’s Child Psychiatric Program on March 31st, where we made 6 pre- teen Children Honorary Submariners. In addition to the K4K ball caps, certificates, wristbands, tattoos and Sub photos, we also gave them Special Pillows with uplifting messages sewn inside. They were made for our K4K Program by Kids from Collegiate Middle School in Richmond Virginia. The hospital staff told us that the pillows were a perfect added gift for the emotional problems the Children were dealing with. Sub Vets Paul Grammer, Ron Grabowski and John & Jackie Riley, visited the Kids in their Activity Room. On April 15th, 12 teenagers in Yale-Saint Raphael Hospital's In-Patient Child Psychiatric Program became Honorary Submariners! As usual, our Honorary Submariner gifts were a big hit with the Kids. They were also excited to receive the Special Pillows, with uplifting messages sewn inside, and Teddy Bears provided by K4K Team member Ron Grabowski. It was another very memorable visit for our Team which consisted of Paul Grammer, Charlie Murray, and John and Jackie Riley. Abraham Lincoln were rewarded with joyful thanks from the Children and their families and we thanked the Kids for the opportunity to include them in our Submariner Family. Our Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Team included Norm and Ella Mae Kuzel, Paul Grammer, Ron Grabowski, Mike DeLeo and John and Jackie Riley. 34 Children at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (CCMC), in Hartford, became Honorary Submariners on Thursday, May 14th! The responses of the Kids again warmed our hearts. Many of the parents shared that they really appreciated our visiting their Children and several noted that it was the first time they saw their Child smile since they entered the hospital! We also visited Submarine Veteran, and Holland Club member, Terry Pendergast, who was a patient at the hospital. Paul and Ron served on boats that Terry served on also which started the lengthy telling of Sea Stories all around! We had a great time with Terry and wished him a speedy recovery. Active Duty Submariners Daniel Messier and Russell Frazier, stationed at the Nautilus Submarine Museum, joined the Groton Base Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Team of Norm and Ella Mae Kuzel, Paul Dillon, Charlie Murray, and John and Jackie Riley for the visit. Dan and Russell were big hits with the Kids and are now officially Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Team members (they also visited CCMC with us in December). As in December, Kids were excited to learn that they would be given Special Tours, and Nautilus Submarine Challenge Coins, by Active Duty Submariners if they wore their “Honorary Submariner” Cap or Doo Rag to the Nautilus Museum. Our Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Team thanks Jeff Walsh, Sharon Foret, the Naval Submarine School Chief Petty Officers Association, and the Naval Submarine School First Class Petty Officers Association, who put on the Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Fundraiser Brunches. They also donate their tips to the program! These brunches are held the third Sunday of each month at the clubhouse. We thank everyone who supports the brunches or separately donates to the program.
