2nd ANNUAL MOUNTAIN MADNESS QUILT CAMP
2nd ANNUAL MOUNTAIN MADNESS QUILT CAMP & SHOW AUGUST 6-8 2015 The Quilt Camp will take place at the Big Tupper Ski Lodge in Tupper Lake, NY: the cross roads of the Adirondacks. Affordable Quilting in cooperation with the Tupper Lake Arts Council and the Stitchin' Bs are hosting this three day event. All levels of quilters, hobbyists, artisans, and anyone wanting to learn to quilt are welcome to participate in this exciting event. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Thursday, August 6th Quilted Bag and Matching Buttoned Pouch with Kathy Fenlon Time: 9:00am-4:00pm Cost: $75, lunch included Project Size : 13” wide, 10 ½” high, 3” deep, buttoned pouch: ~5” wide x 6” high Level of Difficulty : Intermediate The bag is made out of 3 coordinating quilt fabrics. The fabric is pieced, then quilted onto batting. The bag is lined and includes 5 interior pockets. It is closed with a magnetic snap or zipper. Students will learn to piece the bag together, and then free motion “quilt” it with batting. Kathy will demonstrate different ways to do pockets, and students will choose the types of pockets they want in their own creation. Kathy will demonstrate how she uses scraps to make a simple, cute matching buttoned pouch to go with the bag. Churn Dash-Star Quilt with Pat Flath/Bev Stellges Time: 9:00am-4:00pm Cost: $75, lunch included Project Size : Lap Quilt Level of Difficulty : All levels This is an easy pattern by M’Liss Rae Hawley that takes 6 fat quarters and a background fabric for a wonderful, pleasing quilt. For our quilt we used a variety of post Civil War fabrics and two background fabrics, but it could just as easily be made with only one background fabric. Do you have some winter fabrics to showcase or batiks or any coordinating fabrics? Just six fat quarters! Fun Patches Quilt with Pat Flath/Bev Stellges Time: 9:00am-4:00pm Cost: $75, lunch included Project Size : Lap Quilt Level of Difficulty : All Levels This is a variation of a shadow quilt. It is an excellent showcase for focal fabrics. They are quick and easy to make, a perfect project for quilters of any level. Open Sew / Make & Take Bring your own project or purchase one of the featured make & takes. Full Day Session: 9:00am-4:00pm, $35 lunch included CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Friday, August 7th Free Motion Quilting & Rag Quilt with Lu Corts Time: 9:00am-4:00pm Cost: $75, lunch included Project Size : Lap Quilt Level of Difficulty : All Levels Join Lu in this liberating course on free motion quilting. The morning will be spent honing your new found skills and in the afternoon you will be constructing a wonderful rag quilt, quilting it block by block with all sorts of great designs. You will have a completed quilt before you know it! Bargello Table Runner with Marcia Tiernan Time: 9:00am-4:00pm Cost: $75, lunch included Project Size : 19 ½ x 49 ½ “ Level of Difficulty : All Levels This is a table runner using the Bargello Method. It is easily made with 10 fabrics shaded from light to dark. Kiruto Quilt by Scott Murkin with Janet Bailey Time: 9:00am-4:00pm Cost: $75, lunch included Project Size : Lap Quilt Level of Difficulty : Intermediate & Advanced Scott Murkin's original quilt will be on display at this year's Mountain Madness Quilt Show This pieced quilt is a unique example of tessellating. The block design is visually obscured, and a subtle illusion of curves is created. Although the version shown is done in Japanese and Japanese-style prints, it will look equally fabulous when made from your stash favorites or in any combination of fabrics with light and dark values. Open Sew / Make & Take Bring your own project or purchase one of the featured make & takes. Full Day Session: 9:00am-4:00pm, $35 lunch included CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Saturday, August 8th FLAKES AND FRIENDS FOREVER Wall Hanging with Jo Ann Zenger Time: 9:00am-4:00pm Cost: $75, lunch included Project Size : 19” by 22” Level of Difficulty : Confident Beginner Flakes and Friends Forever is a wall hanging that depicts both winter and the mystical friendship between a tree and a snowman as the tree bends down so the snowman can put the star on top of the tree. It’s a great project to practice freezer paper applique, embroidery and hand quilting. This project lends itself to lots of embellishments. It also lends itself to gender reassignment by substituting a pipe and a bow tie for the beads and buttons! The pattern is designed by Sarah E. Masters of Rustic Threads, who has graciously given permission for the use of this pattern in this class. Her website can be viewed at www.rusticthreads.com. Adirondack Crossing Quilt with Jude Spero Time: 9:00am-4:00pm Cost: $75, lunch included Project Size : 59” x 85” Level of Difficulty : Confident Beginner This is the quilt pattern to go to when you need a quick present. It is a tried and true, immediate gratification kind of strip piecing pattern. The trick is that you are letting the fabric do all the work. This quilt pattern works best with big prints. You know, the type - the kind of fabric that you hate to cut because most strip piecing patterns just don't display how gorgeous they are. We have seen it made with Hawaiian shirts! We have made it with directional prints. The pattern contains two block sizes - 18 inch block and a 9 inch block. Cabin in the Mountains with Mardee Cooke Time: 9:00am-4:00pm Cost: $75, lunch included Project Size : Approx. 28” x 34” Level of Difficulty : Intermediate This scenic wall hanging measures approximately 28” x 34” and is perfect for those who enjoy our north country atmosphere. In this project you will learn several quiltmaking basics while making four (4) Delectable Mountain blocks, eight (8) small log cabin blocks and creating a cabin scene with fusible appliqué. Best of all, you can probably make it with fabrics you have on hand. Open Sew / Make & Take Bring your own project or purchase one of the featured make & takes. Full Day Session: 9:00am-4:00pm, $35 lunch included INSTRUCTORS Janet Bailey Scott Murkin Kiruto Quilt Janet presented at last year's Mountain Madness Quilt camp. A retired school teacher, Janet has been quilting for over 30 years. Her main area of interest is making scrap quilts, and the smaller the pieces, the better she likes the pattern! Janet has been very active in the Gulf States Quilting Association (Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the panhandle of Florida) for as long as she has been quilting. At the association’s 2012 Quilt Show, Janet submitted 12 quilts, winning 6 ribbons including Best of Show for her paper-pieced, queen-size Judy Niemeyer “Fourth of July” quilt. This quilt also won a First Place ribbon at the 2013 Vermont Quilt Festival. In 2013, Janet was named the winner of the Marion Maerke scholarship, the highest honor given by the GSQA. Janet is an active member of 7 quilt guilds, and thoroughly enjoys sharing her quilting skills and knowledge with others. Mardee Cooke Cabin in the Mountains, Mardee presented at last year's Mountain Madness Quilt Camp. Mardee began her career as a Home Economics Teacher. She has been quilting since the mid-1980’s and began teaching quilting while working with Cornell Cooperative Extension. The quilting program was very successful and workshops were taught in many St. Lawrence County communities. Workng with co-worker, JoAnn Zenger, they also initiated a Quilt Camp which was held at 4-H Camp Overlook . This event was transferred to the Borderline Quilt Guild and has grown significantly over time. While teaching over 30 different workshops in the county, she has always focused on teaching techniques which quilters can apply to a variety of projects, and considers herself a teacher rather than a quilter designer. She retired in 1999, but continues to teach for CCE, the Quilt Camp and as a guest instructor. Lu Corts Free Motion Quilting & Rag Quilt Lu Corts has been sewing since she could sit up straight. She began quilting as a result of breast cancer. Lu says "It's so easy to carry all those little pieces with you while you sit through endless doctor appointments! What a gift!" That was in 1994. Lu has taught her way up the east coast, and along the way, published her patterns as Itza Lulu Designs. Lu truly believes quilting is supposed to be fun and all of her patterns and classes are designed to that end. Quick and easy! Kathy Fenlon Quilted Bag and Matching Buttoned Pouch, Kathy Fenlon has been sewing since she was 8 years old. A neighbor who lived down the road from her family farm in Tully, NY got her started through the 4-H program. The day Kathy learned to thread a machine and make it go, she started creating things! She has always loved the creativity of choosing fabric and turning it into something unique. Kathy’s early sewing ventures were pretty traditional, but soon lead to creating her own things. About ten years ago, she took a quilting class and became hooked! Kathy soon began looking for other things she could make with the quilting fabric, and made a few bags. Her daughters Sarah and Kelly both had suggestions for improving the bags such as adding pockets, coming up with closures, etc. Soon people began asking them where they got the bags they carried, and Kathy began to make a few to sell. That lead to making bags and other fabric accessories for a few local craft shows. Five years ago Kathy turned her little bag business into SaraKate, LLC. Two years ago Kathy joined Lakeside Artisans, an artists’ cooperative in Oswego, NY. She sells her bags and other accessories there as well as teaches some classes. Kathy loves to collect quality quilting fabric and make bags with fabric from her extensive “stash” collection For the past five years, she has made well over one hundred bags each year, and no two are ever alike . Pat Flath Churn Dash-Star Quilt, Fun Patches Quilt, Pat presented at last year's Mountain Madness Quilt Camp. A retired professor of Chemistry at Paul Smith’s College, Pat has been quilting for seventeen years. She is a member or The American Quilter’s Society and the Pine Tree Quilters of Saranac Lake, and is a past President of the Champlain Valley Quilters’ Guild of New York. Her quilts have been displayed in Vermont Quilt Festival Shows, Champlain Valley Quilt Shows, Cabin Fever Quilt Shows, Old Forge Art Center, North Country Community College, Champlain Valley (of Vermont) Quilt Show, New York Quilts and the Schweinfurth Quilt Show. Her Baltimore Twist quilt has won numerous awards, a blue ribbon at Vermont Quilt Festival, blue ribbon and Judge’s Choice at Champlain Valley (of Vermont) Quilt Show, honorable mention at Schweinfurth, second place at New York Quilts, third place at Old Forge and has been juried into the American Quilter’s Show in Paducah, KY. She has been teaching all levels of quilt classes at quilt shops in Hogansburg, NY, Plattsburgh and for the Champlain Valley Quilters’ Guild. For many summers she has attended quilting workshops at North Country/Adirondack Quilt Camp and Quilting by the Lake, Morrisonville, NY. Pat has been on the organizing committee of the Adirondack/North Country Quilt Camp held in Paul Smiths, NY and Saranac Lake, NY. She has also organized quilting retreats at the Wadhams Conference Center in Ogdensburg, NY. Jude Spero Adirondack Crossing Quilt, Jude Spero's grandmother was an avid seamstress who worked in the textile industry. Jude remembers her coming home with two shopping bags full of fabric every day for sewing projects, so Jude says sewing is in her blood. In the 1970's she began making baby quilts and dolls, selling them to co-workers, friends, and family. Then it was on to bed quilts for her bedrooms. Each family member received their own throw quilt, which she called “fireside” quilts. In 1986 Jude, her husband, and their two boys moved to the Adirondacks from New York City. She became a member of the Wing Falls Quilt Guild and began doing Craft Shows where she sold her quilts, wall hangings, and folk art fabric accents. After several years of sewing custom quilts, Jude taught quilting classes for BOCES and at local shops. In 2002 her first long arm was purchased and by 2006 Jude opened Patchwork Passion Quilt Shop in Queensbury. She had always designed her own quilts so this evolved into creating her own patterns and designing sample quilts for her shop. Eventually this project led to the closing of her quilt shop and the creation of Little Louise Designs where Jude creates her own designs at her home studio and features them on her web site. Currently she designs quilt patterns for several fabric companies including but not limited to Moda, Timeless Treasures, Island Batik, Quilting Treasures and Hoffman. She has also been designing for eQuilter.com. Many of her patterns can be found in Hancock's of Paducah catalog as well as Annie's and Keepsake Quilting. Jude is in the process of having a new website made which will be a true e-commerce site where her patterns will be available as PDF Instant Downloads. This eliminates waiting for an email with your pattern. Besides the patterns, the website will also feature fabric, pre-cuts, kits and specialty rulers she uses in her patterns. The new website, which is still under construction will be www.quiltpatternsplus.com and will be the new home of Little Louise Designs. Bev Stellges Churn Dash-Star Quilt, Fun Patches Quilt A retired teacher from Northwood School in Lake Placid, NY, Bev has been quilting for twenty-five years. She is a member of The American Quilter’s Society and the Pine Tree Quilters of Saranac Lake, and is a past President of the Champlain Valley Quilters’ Guild of New York and a past chairman of the CVQG quilt show. She has also been a judge for three years at the international show AArt Quilts@ at the Schweinfurth Museum in Auburn, NY. Her quilts have been displayed in Vermont Quilt Festival Shows, Champlain Valley Quilt Shows, Cabin Fever Quilt Shows, Old Forge Art Center, North Country Community College, Northwood School library, the Schweinfurth Quilt Show and juried into the American Quilter’s Show in Paducah, KY. For many years she has taught all levels of quilting classes at the LPCA, North Country Community College in Saranac Lake and at quilt shops in Saranac Lake, Plattsburgh and Hogansburg, NY, and for the Champlain Valley Quilters’ Guild. Bev has been on the organizing committee and has taught classes at the Adirondack/North Country Quilt Camp held in Paul Smiths, NY and Saranac Lake and has organized quilting retreats at the Wadhams Conference Center in Ogdensburg, NY. Marcia Tiernan Bargello Table Runner, Marcia have been quilting since she was 15 – 60 years ago. She usually does not choose easy quilts unless they strike her fancy. Marcia has made the Giant Dahlia at least 6 times. Quilting is her passion and she loves to teach others and spread the passion and enjoyment. Jo Ann Zenger Flakes and Friends Forever Wall Hanging, Jo Ann's maternal great grandmother made rail fence quilts and her paternal grandmother made double wedding rings so you might say quilting is in her genes. She learned to sew in seventh grade and never looked back. Jo Ann dabbled a bit in quilting until she took her first class in 1987 from Mardee Cooke at Cooperative Extension. Two things happened she wasn’t expecting. First, she learned that the Lone Star is not a beginner quilt! Second, Mardee became a great friend. In 1990, Mardee asked Jo Ann to teach extra classes for her as she made additional offerings throughout the county. The next year, they developed the quilt camp idea and offered a camping/quilting experience to local women in the area. They also developed a local quilt guild. Jo Ann was the first president and instrumental in creating their biennial quilt show along with Mardee. The Cooperative Extension quilt camp was then turned over to the guild after a few years. Jo Ann has taught for other shops as well as personally. Jo Ann currently has an antique baby crib in the corner of her bedroom that is full to overflowing with quilts of all sizes. She never worries about “matching” a quilt with a room. If she like the fabrics, she uses them. If Jo Ann wants to use the quilt in a specific room, she does. Life is too short to not enjoy colors and fabrics. Ten of her grandchildren get quilts for Christmas on a rotating basis. Their parents seem to think that the adults should get some of them, but they will have their chance when Jo Ann's gone and they get to pick and choose from the quilts in the crib. Of course, there will be lots more to choose from by then!
