Doll Makers Extra Ordinary
November 21, 2008
PIN ELLA
November 22 at 9:00 am, Pin
Ella P.’s will gather in the Overbrook Quilt Shop for a day of
“gathering and sharing!” Every
year Overbrook opens their
doors for the beginning of the
Christmas season.
Notice you need to come at
9:00am to the back door, which
will be open, to help set up our
display of dolls and things. The
quilt shop is not open for business at that time but we will need
that time to help provide an attractive show. Does someone
have the black table topper that
we have used in previous shows?
You do not need to bake anything
because lunch will be served as
usual. Remember you are on
your own for lunch.
There will be a short meeting before the shop opens for business
After lunch you may take your
dolls home unless you have made
other arrangements. We might
not be back until January and
they might be plenty lonely or get
lost without all our guidance.
You need to bring any show and
tell—especially dolls. We will
have a table to show off our dolls.
Let’s make a nice show — not
just dolls on a table!

Betty has been very busy sewing for her
golf group and also her quilting group.
So far she has made about eight table
runners. She also, made another beaded
purse for her daughter. She worked at
the election last week.
For experimenting she is working on
doll heads. Right now they are drying
from a coat of Stiffy. She is working on
a very bright pink vinyl jacket for Flap-
pette.
Mary Jo learned that her oven cooked
very hot but only after she cremated her
clay dolls. She suggests you check with
an oven thermometer. I do think she is
enjoying being in town.

Linda Vargas is the new VicePresident. Now we need your

Thelma was very interested in our
past projects. In October, she took
10 quilts she made this summer
plus 2 she made years ago to a
qu ilt s h o w i n h er a r ea.
She also took 30 dolls she made
this year and 30 dolls she made
last year to the same show.
Grandmothers and mothers
brought their little girls to the
show. It was also on closed circuit
TV as advertisement before the
show.
After the last meeting Mary Jo
Smith and Valerie went to a quilt
show and for some interesting fabric, “Construction Guys.” They
really enjoyed the quilt show.
Mary Jo made a kilt, hat and pure
for a Halloween costume for her
15 year old grandson. He considered no underwear but his friend
said, “Dude, please wear underwear!”

Mary Burt just got back from a sewing
retreat “Artfiberfest” on the Oregon
coast. Thirteen attended and sewed
from dawn to midnight most days with a
little time out for walks on the beach
and of course, plenty of eating! It is a
great well lighted space with plenty of
cutting tables, ironing stations and an
ocean view. She has attended since the
beginning 15 years ago, as have most of
the others.
This is the famous chicken purse. This
one is donated to the ALS silent auction.
Another is donated to another silent
auction and has a couple more promised. Each time she makes another one
she perfects it a bit and figures by the
time she finishes there will be so many
that chicken purse carriers will be
bumping into one another! At the retreat she learned to make a biscornu.
You can google the directions.
I may not have traveled like Mary but I
had dolls that
traveled in my
place all year.

a trip to my
favorite
place—
Houston Quilt Show where she was in
Celebration of the Doll. My traveling
doll will be back by the January meeting
and then we can read about the places
she has visited throughout the summer.

Linda made a presentation about
Art Dolls to a group in Topeka. It
was for a seminar and most of the
folks in the group had no idea
what an Art Doll was all about.
Her “Green Witch” was a show
and tell at a doll collectors’ group
meeting. She was a prize and the
gal that received her was happy to
have her. (as well she should!)
She is now working
on a Santa Claus that “Pin Ella P.’s are very generous

have made similar
donations of your
dolls.
Let’s hear from all of you that

Liz finished another online class.
This one was the follow-up to the
Journal Making class she took last
spring. More bookmaking and journal
making techniques were learned. She
has made even more than are in this
picture.
The end of
October was the anniversary of her
blog. She “manipulated” things so
that she put up her 100th

Post on the same day. To celebrate
she hosted a giveaway in which she
gave the winner her choice of one of
the journals. She chose the rainbow
colored one, which was made of
scraps of our Rainbow Challenge.
That class is finished and Christmas
quilt tops finished she is ready to get
back to making dolls.

Pin Ella P. is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to
facilitating creativity. We have a public service project
planned each year. The club meets from 10-3 on the third
I hope that I have not missed anyone’s e-mails — too much
going on. Our son-in-law was hit head on while driving the
turnpike. The guy going the wrong way did not live and Tim
had two broken legs and a broken collar bone— he was a very
lucky young man! Anyway much time was spent in the hospital but he is home now and doing very well. While all that
was going on the day of one of his surgeries his youngest
daughter had her second little boy. What a day!!! I know I
am too old for that kind of life!
I did receive a letter from Sulky who has not have a challenge
for a few years. They are going to join Hoffman and they are
going to have a large challenge with many prizes. So the doll
will have to be of a certain chosen Hoffman and embellished
with Sulky thread. The pattern is a paisley for next year.
Also, check out Treasures of the Gypsy for the challenge for
next year. This will also need to be an embellished doll.
These dolls make their first showing at the Houston Quilt
Show and if chosen are shown at many shows.
Almost all of the doll magazines will also have challenges as
well as several places on the internet. Oh, yes!! Do not forget your doll for The State Fair. There will be one class that
has a special topic which is chosen each year by Annie
Newby because she always wins!! But that could be YOU!!
WINDOWS
A young couple moves into a new neighborhood.
The next morning while they were eating breakfast, the young
woman sees her neighbor hanging the wash outside.
“That laundry is not very clean,” she said.
“She doesn’t know how to wash correctly.
Perhaps she needs better laundry soap.”
Her husband looked on, but remained silent.
Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, the
young woman would make the same comments.
About one month later, the woman was surprised to see a
nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband:
“Look, she has learned how to wash correctly.
I wonder who taught her this?”
The husband said, “I got up early this morning and
cleaned our windows.”
And so it is with life. What we see when watching others
depends on the purity of the window through which we look.
