Acute | ComPact | HMI | Light shaping tools A c u t e | C o m P a c t The Light Shaping Company “The photographer’s tools are a natural part of the creative process. Like the painter’s brush, the sculptor’s chisel, or the musician’s instrument, their form and design should reflect their function. They should have the right feel, and be aesthetically pleasing.” Profoto founders Conny Dufgran and Eckhard Heine Profoto Create your own light with Profoto: To o l s d e s i g n e d f o r L i g h t S h a p i n g The Profoto Philosophy The cornerstone of the Profoto design philosophy is to create tools for “shaping light.” The result is a totally modular system that is easy to understand and work with. Perfect light After considering natural light, the light you create is the most important element. Natural light comes in unending varieties of hue and character. As a photographer, you can choose to patiently wait for the perfect light. Or create it, using the right tools, to control, complement, or recreate the beauty that nature provides. Optically designed light shaping tools The Profoto philosophy demands that tools be designed to shape light in specific ways, with minimum effort. Profoto’s unique modular system of optically designed light shaping tools allow you create the “perfect light” on demand. With them, you can work simply, consistently, and efficiently. To syste–matically create different types of light, you need to start with the basic concepts of direct, diffused and reflected light. The possibilities are endless, but the process should be creative, without being time consuming. Achieve a distinctive quality of light With Profoto, you select from a versatile, modular system of light shaping instruments. Each with the ability to create its own distinct character of light. So you can create your own style. With the confidence that you get the same, consistent quality of light – flash-to-flash, shot-to-shot, in the studio, or on location. Using the same instruments that interchangeably fit a complete system of studio and location generators, or self contained units. Safety and total reliability Many electronic safeguards are incorporated to ensure the generator is always ready to function, at its peak, for long periods of time. These implementations include Auto-diagnostic start-up circuitry, DDP pulse charging capacitor circuitry (for Deep Discharge Protection), temperature control and overload protection. Profoto’s unique “arc-free” twist-lock lamp head connectors are among the safest in existence. There is no need to shut down the generator to remove lamp heads. For total reliability, the generator and heads must be able to withstand heavy duty use without failure. Look, listen and touch Photograph and Cover Photographs ©1998 Andrew Eccles. Look at the control panel, and you can start working right away. Use of the dials is intuitive and logical. Listen to the way parts click positively into place. Feel the rugged, lightweight, and practical styling of every component. Take your style of light anywhere Anywhere, anytime. Use it everyday in your studio or grab it for work on location. With portable, user-changeable, multi-voltage generators and self contained units that also work with most brands of gas generators, you are free to create images anywhere. 3 System Chart Profoto Acute And ComPact System Telezoom reflector Acute2 Head Narrow Beam Reflector Acute2 2400 Magnum Reflector Acute2 1200 7" Grid Reflector Acute2 Twin Head Adapter Plate Affix Your Own Custom Light Shaper Acute Lamphead Extension Cable, 16 ft. All Acute2 and Acute heads accept the same modular light shaping tools. The basic Profoto Acute2 modular flash head design features a circular, heavy duty, Quartz flash tube and UV coated protection dome that surrounds both the flash tube and the standard 250-watt modeling light. It provides even illumination and maximum light output. All lamphead cables feature Profoto special connectors for arc-proof performance and the ultimate in reliability. All heads are also supplied with a 5/8’ stand adapter to mount the units to any standard light stand. Acute2 units take advantage of the mini-can bases modeling light, which is standard with professional lighting systems. Using this standard bulb is an advantage to any photographer who travels,as they arereadily available in a variety of voltages for use all over the world. Thanks to Profoto’s unique zoom system, each reflector can be adjusted forwards and backwards to fine tune the lighting. Optimized Color Output Acute2 heads produce a color temperature of 5400 degrees Kelvin standard. There are other options that are also available by replacing the protection dome with other, more heavily coated domes. There are domes available that offer additional warming in either 300 or 600-degree increments, for a color temperature of 5100 or 4800 degrees respectively. Acute2 Heads Modular heads feature fan cooled operation and accepts all Profoto light shaping tools. These heads feature heavy-duty cables to allow for higher performance and greater reliability. The 250 watt modeling light features a mini-can base which is standard in professional lighting systems. Also included: heavy duty, Quartz flash tube and UV coated protection dome, 16' head cable, zoom reflector and transport cap. You can use a 500W lamp in this head. Max 1000W/generator. , , (with uncoated glass cover) 8 Acute2 Ringflash Includes: Special Mounting Bracket, Lamp Cable 12 ft. (3.5m) Max = 2400Ws. Popular with fashion photographers for freely positioned, direct, and detailed light without harshness. Excellent for small interiors such as automobile photography, or table top applications. The ringflash fits all Acute2 and Acute generators, and is an entirely mobile source of light. The adjustable tripod mount bracket and wide interior (100mm diameter) allows for fitting all types of cameras and lenses in many formats. Optional accessory reflectors expand the ringflash’s capabilities further. Optional Softlight Reflector increases the light source, for fewer sharp shadows. Optional Close-up Reflector focuses the light source 20" (50cm) in front of the camera lens. With smaller objects, the effect is completely shadow-free. Maximum charge is 9600Ws per minute, which equals four flashes per minute ● 2400Ws, 8 flashes ● 1200Ws, 16 flashes ● 600Ws, 32 flashes ● 300Ws, or 64 flashes per minute ● 150Ws. ComPact ComPact Self-contained Flash Units Convenient, economical and easy to set-up with modular light shaping tools For the pro or photo enthusiast, Profoto ComPact units offer the simplest and most economical way to get the best quality of light with the Profoto modular system of light shaping tools. The ComPact makes fine control of individual lights easy. They are ultimately simple, convenient, versatile, and more economical than generator plus head units. As a main light, they are usually used with an umbrella or other diffusion-type light shaping tool, such as the Profoto Softlight Reflector, often near full power. At lower settings, they can be placed close to the subject, to provide character lighting in portrait photography. Photograph ©1998 Andrew Eccles. ComPact units have generator and fan cooled flash head built into one “compact” unit, sometimes referred to as a “monobloc.” They share the same quality of light as all other Profoto flash heads, and accept the same complete system of Profoto light shaping tools for Pro Acute heads as well as Pro-6 and Pro-7. Photograph ©1998 Andrew Eccles. Courtesy of Turner Network Television. Profoto ComPact units provide very high light output, fast recycling, and short flash durations for their size. Efficient fan cooled design assures continuous heavy duty performance where other self contained units fail. On location or in the studio, they are perfect for instant set-up and fast break-down. They are the ideal choice when the situation calls for the minimum amount of fuss and cables, such as with corporate portraits or industrial locations. With their light weight, small dimensions, and multi-voltage capability, one or several can be easily packed for travel, whether going alone, or with a crew. Profoto ComPact units are also perfect to supplement generator set-ups in the studio or on the road. ComPact units share the same quality of light as all other Profoto flash heads, and accept the same complete system of Profoto light shaping tools for Acute2 heads. A removable Voltage Key Card allows instant adjustment of the line voltage anywhere in the world. Just switch power cables and modeling lamps. Both 300WS and 600WS ComPacts can be selected in a “special” version with 150W or 250W halogen modeling lamp and frosted glass cover; or economical version with tungsten modeling lamp. Profoto Pro-Tungsten is excellent for table top product photography or location lighting where Tungsten light sources are useful. Pro Daylight HMI lighting offers daylight color balance in continuous lighting, ideal for digital scanning backs, or mixing with flash. ProTungsten Constructed with the same modular design as Profoto flash unit heads. Fan cooled unit includes uncoated Glass cover, stand adapter, transport cap, and switched 23ft (7m) AC cable. The ProTungsten accepts a 500W (EHC) or 1000W (FEL) Halogen lamp. Changing glass covers can alter the color temperature. Supplied without reflector or lamp. Because of the heat generated, some light shaping tools such as the ProBox andProGlobe should not be used. (230V), (120V) Constructed with the same modular design as Profoto flash unit heads to accept many of the Profoto modular light shaping tools. The 1200 watt HMI light source corresponds in light output to a 5000 watt Halogen lamp. The 575 watt HMI corresponds to about 2000 watt Halogen lamp. ProDaylight units give continuous lighting with color temperature similar to Profoto flash units. The temperature can also be altered by replacing the coated glass cover with a double coated cover. Because of the heat generated, some light shaping tools such as the ProBox andProGlobe should not be used. The Profoto Electronic ballast gives “flicker-free” light for still photography, short exposures, and long exposures required by digital scanning backs. It features automatic voltage selection from 90-240V, 50/60Hz, and can be reduced steplessly by about 50% or 1 f/stop, also changing color temperature. lamp. ProDaylight 1200 & 575 HMI lamp heads and electronic ballasts The basic Profoto modular flash head design features a circular, UV coated heavy duty Quartz flash tube which surrounds the modeling lamp. It provides even illumination and maximum light output. Light Shaping P r o f o t o M o d u l a r L i g h t S h a p i n g To o l s Zoom Reflector light shaping effects – direct light with distinct shadows The versatile Zoom Reflector is supplied with the Acute2 head, and is available separately. By pushing the reflector forward or backward on the lamp head, the spread and effect of the light can be greatly altered. Pushed all the way back (to setting 8), it gives very even lighting over a broad area. The light-spread of 100 degrees, at a distance of 6' (2m) from a wall provides completely even illumination over an area 12' (4m) in diameter. At setting 6, it provides very effective lighting in a circle, for example, properly filling an umbrella. At setting 4, it gives extremely concentrated lighting (65 degrees of light-spread) with an intense lighting effect. The difference between setting 10 and 6 is plus 3 stops. Along with its zoom feature, it accepts a variety of accessories including Grid & Filterholder, Barn Doors, Snoot, and 5°, 10° and 20° Grids for a wide range of light shaping possibilities. The Grid and Filterholder is the most versatile accessory for the Zoom Reflector. Filters can be mounted between the light source and the accessory. There is an air space between the filter and the reflector which prevents the filter from getting burned. Besides a Filter-Cassette, there is a diffusion filter included. It is a little-known fact that grids are more efficient if a diffusion filter is mounted behind them (between the light source and the grid). Honeycomb grids narrow the light beam, and are available in 20°, 10°, and 5° coverage. The four-sided Barn Door mounts directly onto the Zoom Reflector. It features springs for mounting filters and/or honeycomb grids. It blocks undesired light from the subject or the camera lens. Mounted on the reflector, it has a minimal effect on the lighting design. The Filterholder mounts directly onto the Zoom Reflector. A gelatin filter 40x40cm (16"x16") can be mounted. It is especially suitable for lighting materials or subjects in which the structure should be emphasized. The white Softlight Reflector also known as “The Beauty Dish” gives a soft, yet easily focused light. Meant to provide character lighting in portrait photography, the Softlight is superb for a wide variety of uses from product photography of highly reflective surfaces to an excellent light source for architectural or botanical details. Also, a distinctivealternative to ordinary softbox diffusion. Character lighting refers to a source of light that is placed close to the subject. In portrait photography, it is meant to give form and character to the subject’s face. For both Softlight Reflectors, the center disc that blocks out the direct light can be replaced by an semi-opaque opal glass disc to create a center hot spot which also eliminates a donut-hole effect in specular highlights. Each reflector can be supplemented by a honeycomb grid to create soft, toned-down edge-lighting. The Softlight Grid accessory yields 10° coverage with the silver, and 25° with the white reflector, for more directed light. Each reflector gives a unique hard light, but since the light source is large the light appears soft with a unique brilliance. Having two focusing positions, the spot position gives a directed parallel light from a large light source. This position gives a hard light with a unique wrapping quality that also could be perceived as a soft light with a distinct crisp appearance. In the wide position, the reflector gives a 100-degree angle that makes it possible to light a very large area evenly. The Profoto 5-foot and 7-foot reflectors are very easy to set-up and dismantle quickly. Multiple diffusers can be used for additional control. Supplied with deluxe travel bag. Profoto 5' Reflector Same as above with 5' diameter. Profoto 7' Reflector Diffuser - 1 f-stop Optional diffuser for Profoto 7' reflector increases evenness of illumination and reduces output by 1 f/stop. The White Umbrella gives an even diffused lighting effect with soft shadow definition. The closer to the subject the umbrella is placed, the softer the shadow will be. White umbrellas are available in 34" (0.85m) and 42" (1.05m) diameters. The Transparent Umbrella provides diffused lighting around a bright core. The lighting can be varied by changing its distance to the lamp head. Transparent Umbrellas are available in 34" (0.85m) and 42" (1.05m) diameters. The Silver Umbrella provides focused lighting, along with soft shadow definition. It is especially suitable for bringing out structural details in materials. The Silver Umbrella is offered in the 42" (1.05m) size only. White Umbrella Small 0.85m White Umbrella Large 1.05m Transparent Umbrella Small, 0.85m Transparent Umbrella Large. 1.05m Silver Umbrella Large, 1.05m 24 Special diffusers for light shaping ProGlobe* The ProGlobe gives a surrounding light, similar to a bare bulb effect or, if mounted high up, like a street lamp source. It can also be used as background lighting or placed underneath a photography table. Cinematographers call this a “Chinese lantern”. Its soft, bare bulb effect is perfect for quick location lighting. When used in combination with a softbox mounted around it, the ProGlobe creates very even light with soft shadows. The ProGlobe comes either with mountings to attach softboxes, or with lock springs to custom mount on softbox speed ring mounts. ProGlobe incl. Mounting Ring (Chimera) for Pro Lamp Heads ProGlobe only, incl. clips for Pro/Chimera Mounting Ring The ProBox* The ProBox is primarily meant to provide even, shadowless lighting for small subjects. Because itslighting is even all the way out to the edge, several boxes can be grouped together to achieve a larger lighting area. The ProBox includes a 12" (31cm) table stand. With rubber collar and clamp. ProBox includes 12" (310mm) Table Stand Table Stand for ProBox (replacement) Spotlights For highly concentrated and directional light Profoto spotlights are meant to simulate direct sunlight. Accepts all Acute2, Acute, ABS, AB, PAB and Twin Lamp Heads and all ComPact units. Spotlights provide focused light, but of different character and form. ProFresnel It has a large front lens to supply the greatest lighting effect, and the light is focused by pushing the lamp head forward or backward. Similar to those used in theatrical and movie lighting. For highly focused light at short or long distances. It accepts barn doors for control of the light edges. This allows for clean crisp patterns or slides to be projected without color fringing. And since it uses a standard Profoto Flash head, the images projected are daylight correct in color temperature. Optional slide holders hold glass mounted 35mm, 6x4.5 or 6x6 transparencies. Slide holder 35mm Slide Holder 6x4.5 & 6x6 Heat Absorbing Filter (required to project slides using the Profocus spotlight) ProZoom* It is a focusable spotlight of the same type used in theatrical lighting. The lens system creates a light sharp enough to project patterns that can be mounted in a pattern-holder. It can also be supplemented by an iris diaphragm for stepless adjustment of a round point of light. NOTE: Some generators are not suitable – please contact your dealer for information. The Pro Gas protects against damaging high voltage, and must be used when powering Pro Acute, ComPact or Pro-6/7, from a 230V gas generator. Connection to 230V generatorsALWAYS requires that Pro Gas is installed between each gas generator and each flash-unit, except for 117V. NOTE: if the 230V gas generator and the flash unit are directly connected, both pieces of equipment will be harmed. An AC Cable EUR is required. Pro Gas 2 – Must be used when powering Acute or ComPact with a 230V gasoline electric generator set, except 117V operation. Modular Accessories for Acute Generators, Lamp Heads and ComPact units Synchro Cables and IR-Transmitters Flashes can be triggered in several ways: via a synchro-cable connected to the camera, by a built-in photocell triggered by the flash from another unit, or by being interconnected to another flash via a Synchro Interconnection Cable. This cable must be used when “daisy-chaining” or wiring together packs because it is opto-isolated, preventing the dangerous build-up of current in the synchro-circuit. Optional infra-red or radio triggering devices are available from other manufacturers.
