to all of the PN students who participated
in the event. We are proud of you!
The Practical Nursing Program is
currently taking applications for
the class of 2013. Prospective students must pass an entrance exam
for basic math and reading skills.
The cost of the exam is 40.00.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics: “Employment of LPNs is expected to grow by 21% between 2008 and
2018, much faster than average for all occupations, in response to the long-term care needs of an increasing elderly
population and the general increase in demand for healthcare services.”

Health Occupations Class has Busy Year
Mrs.
Young’s
Health
Occupations class
has had a
busy and very productive year.
November 7-11 marked HOSA
week and both the morning
(Jackson County) and afternoon
(Roane County) classes kept a
busy schedule. Jackson Co.
students were at Ripley High on
Tuesday, November 8 performing blood pressure readings and
Body Mass Index. They also
offered smokeless tobacco education. Wednesday they went to
Eldercare and participated in
resident activities and made
beds. Thursday they conducted
a fund raiser for Juvenile Diabetes Research.
Roane County students were at
Roane General Hospital on
Tuesday. They assisted with
lunch and afternoon activities.
On Wednesday they went to
Miletree and helped with lunch
and spent time visiting with
residents.
In addition to the HOSA week
activities, the class has also
planned a blood drive which
will take place at the center on
May 10. Students have worked
with Mr. Brian Adams of the
American Red Cross on this
endeavor.
Finally, the students would like
to take the opportunity to thank
the community for their support
in the fund raiser they have
been working on this year.
With the help of the community, students were able to raise
$500.00 for Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation. They
received a merit award at the
State HOSA Leadership conference for their efforts. According to the Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation over 80
people each day in the U.S. are
diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
Occupation
class attended the
Hosa State
Competition
held on
March 2-3
2012. The
competition
was held in

Students Pair for Community
Project
Students from two programs at
Roane-Jackson Technical Center
worked collaboratively to put
together gift bags which will be
distributed during Jackson
County pre-school
screening. Career & Work
Skills Training students and
Child Development students
worked together using supplies
donated by local businesses and
agencies for this community
service project. The Practical
Nursing students will participate
in the screening process the
week of March 19, 2012. This
project allows students to work
together and provide a valuable
service to the community.
Local artist-blacksmith Jeff Fetty came to RoaneJackson Technical Center campus on Tuesday,
March 6 to speak with welding students and visit
the shop. Fetty has been working with metal for
over 30 years, developing a world-wide reputation for his retail and commission work. Mr.
Fetty’s portfolio includes architecture, large
sculpture, and smaller pieces for home décor.
During his time at the Center he was able to

speak with the students about the alternative opportunities for the welding and metal working
trade. Mr. Cheuvront hopes to take students to
visit Mr. Fetty’s forge, located at the Chestnut
Ridge Artist Colony, which Fetty founded. For

Fabricate
Equipment
With the many projects built each year
by the Welding
Program at RoaneJackson Technical
Center comes the
need for specialized
Contribution by
equipment. This

machinery can be
extremely costly, so the program tries to
manage expenses by building or fabricating
machinery when possible. The most recent
project is a pipe roller that was built by
Jessi Adcock with the help of fellow stu-
dents Lewis Yates and Andrew Tidd.
The need for this machine arose last fall as
the students began working on the annual
Cedar Lakes Winterfest display. The design
for the poinsettia flower display required
pipe be rolled to create a frame for the
lights. There was not a piece of equipment
to do this, so Mr. Cheuvront, the welding
instructor, decided to make one with the
help of Mr. Sheppard’s CAD class.
Chris Manly (CAD), made detailed patterns
for the project using a photograph of a pipe
roller from an equipment store.
The patterns were then turned over to Jessi

Adcock and she built the machine from the
drawings.
The pipe roller is a wonderful addition to
the Welding Department. It allows students
to roll pipe up to 1 ¾ “ in diameter. Complete circles can be made and because the
rollers are interchangeable, different materials like square tubing can be rolled. The
machine would have cost at least $300 on
the retail market. The skilled students at
RJTC were able to produce it for only
around $20 in materials.

Wes Linkninogger
is representing RJTC in
Ornamental Welding for the
2012 State Skills USA Competition. Wes, a senior at Roane
County High School, built a
scale model dozer that was
chosen from a group of ornamental projects completed by
welding students at the Center. A
certified welder, Wes has
worked on countless other projects not only at RJTC, but also
repairs for the public and the
Roane County School bus garage.
Jessi Adcock is the representative for the Job Skills Demonstration Division. Jessi will be
giving a demonstration on the
proper technique for an openbutt weld using the SMAW
welding process. Jessi’s projects
have included design and con-
struction of the 2011 light display for the Cedar Lakes Winterfest competition and construction of the pipe roller needed to
complete that project. Jessi is a
first year welding student and a
junior at Ripley High School.
Travis Adcock will be representing the Center in the Welding
Division of the competition.
Travis has certified in SMAW,
plate welding, SMAW pipe, and
GTAW pipe (stick-plate, stickpipe, tig-pipe). Travis is a second year welding student and a
senior at Ripley High School. He
plans to attend West Virginia
Tech in the fall and study
Engineering. Good Luck Wes,
Jessi, and Travis!

Building Construction
Students in the Building Construction class recently worked
on a project for a local Ripley Elementary teacher. The students constructed the cube pictured above as a creative tool
for the classroom. Elementary students will be allowed to
use the cube for play or quiet time to read.

Jacob Boggs overlooks the grounds from the scaffolding.
Mr. James’ students are working to complete the home they
have been building this school year. Rainy weather has been a
hurdle at times, but the unseasonably warm winter enabled the
students to work through most of the season. The on-site construction gives students the opportunity to see every aspect of
the building process while completing two years in the program. The home will be sold when the final touches are complete .

Mr. Sheppard’s CAD students recently worked with
Hardman’s of Spencer to
prepare for their annual
Home Show at the Heritage
Park Community Building in
Downtown Spencer. The
event was held on Saturday,
March 17. The show featured
several store suppliers with
products such as cabinetry
and flooring materials. The
CAD class designed and produced Hardman’s key chains
for distribution. Student Josh
Ferrell of Roane County
High School served as a
representative for the program at the show and set up
the printer for display. He
also had several prototype
pieces for customers to
inspect.
