April 5, 2013 The Infinite Dial 2013 One in three Americans aged 12 and older now listen to all forms of online radio on a weekly basis. That’s according to a new national study from Arbitron and Edison Research, The Infinite Dial 2013: Navigating Digital Platforms. Released this week, the study is the 21st in a series by Arbitron and Edison dating back to 1998. This week we take a look at the study and highlight some “bite size” chunks of information that we think will be of interest and/or relevance to our News/Talk/Sports radio readers. Certainly it does not represent the contents of the entire study which -- along with previous studies -- can be downloaded for free. Look for a link at the bottom of page three. First, The Stats First up, let’s take a look at how the study was conducted. A total of 2,021 persons were interviewed to investigate Americans’ use of digital platforms and new media. From January 15 to February 10, 2013, telephone interviews were conducted with respondents age 12 and older chosen at random from a national sample of Arbitron’s Fall 2012 survey diarykeepers, and through random digit dialing (RDD) sampling in geographic areas where Arbitron diarykeepers were not available for the survey. Diarykeepers represent 45% of the completed interviews and RDD sampled respondents represent 55% of the completed interviews. The study includes a total of 711 cell phone interviews. Next, Some Headlines • Fifty-three percent of all Americans aged 12 and over (an estimated 139 million people) own a smartphone; three-quarters of those aged 18-to-34 own these devices • Weekly online radio listeners report listening for an average of 11 hours 56 minutes per week, up by more than two hours over last year’s listening levels (9 hours 46 minutes in 2012), and nearly double that reported in 2008 (6 hours 13 minutes). During the same span of time, Arbitron’s RADAR service indicates that AM/FM Radio has grown to 243 million weekly listeners and time spent listening has remained approximately two hours a day • More than one in four Americans (27 percent) check their social network several times per day, estimated at 71 million people • AM/FM radio is an “almost all of the times” or “most of the times” in- car choice for nearly six in ten adults aged 18 and over; dashboard AM/ FM radio (58 percent) far outpaces frequent in-car use of CD players (15 percent), portable digital audio/MP3 players (11 percent) and satellite radio (10 percent) • AM/FM Radio delivers far more consumers (49 percent) than other media during the half hour before they arrive to shop, more than twice the number reached by the next closest medium (advertising on Billboards at 21 percent) • Twenty-nine percent own a tablet; this is up more than 70 percent in the last year, compared to 17 percent ownership in 2012 • The percentage of people with three or more working computers in their home remained steady with last year’s findings (24%). That’s up from 2009 (18%) but down from 2011 (25%). • The percentage of people in homes with Internet access and a WiFi network setup has rocketed from 48% in 2010, to 67% in 2013, which is also up 6% over last year’s study results. And one in four now report living in homes with five or more devices connected to WiFi. ©2013 NTS MediaOnline™ — All rights reserved. THAT’S DOING GOOD IN ANY LANGUAGE Here’s a photo from our “Not Exactly Talk Media News” Department: While Lotus Communications’ 102.1 FM La Caliente isn’t among the stations we usually cover here in NTS MediaOnline Weekly, when we see good radio doing good things, we believe it deserves industry recognition. That’s the staff of La Caliente posing with one of those giant checks representing nearly $94,000 that was raised during their 8th annual Radiothon to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Recognition of the service is up nearly 15 percent according to the Arbitron/Edison study. • More than one-fourth of weekly podcast users consume six or more podcasts a week, with 13% reporting they listen to 11 or more. • YouTube growth appears to be leveling off a bit, according to the study. While the percentage of those who reported watching Internet video programming on YouTube has made huge jumps since Arbitron/ Edison began tracking that stat in 2007, viewing has remained flat (37%) from 2012 to 2013 among those who said they’d viewed YouTube video programming in the “last week.” Nevertheless, some 40% of respondents overall did report viewing online video in the last week, reinforcing its popularity. • Online Radio is still considerably more popular than online video, with Time Spent per user with radio nearly triple that of video. Self-reported Time Spent per week for radio was 11:56, while only 4:00 was reported for video viewing. • More than half of respondents reported owning a Smartphone, up some 9% over last year, and over 40% since 2009. And while three-quarters of 18-34s own a Smartphone, Talk radio readers would be wise to note that Smartphone ownership is at 69% among 35-44s and over 50% in 45-54s. • And what are folks doing on all those Smartphones? Not surprisingly, 97% of respondents make or receive calls, with 94% sending or receiving texts. But of special note is the fact that 44% say they listen to online radio via their Smartphone. • When it comes to getting apps downloaded, broadcasters have a ways to go to catch up, with 47% of Smartphone owners reporting they’ve downloaded Pandora, compared to just 15% who have downloaded iHeart Radio, Meanwhile a mere 9% reporting downloading an AM/ FM Radio station app. • Three in ten respondents now wake-up in the morning to a cell phone. In fact, getting awakened by cell phone or “some other way” far exceeds those who report waking to a clock radio. • Think you’re seeing a lot more tablets out there these days? According to Arbitron/Edison’s study, tablet ownership is up 70% year-over-year, with tablet ownership reaching three in ten individuals. Apple’s iPad still leads in ownership, but non-iPad tablet ownership is growing rapidly. • Love it or hate it, Facebook remains the big player when it comes to social networking. 58% have a personal profile on Facebook, followed by a distant second LinkedIn (17%), Twitter (15%), MySpace (14%), Google+ (12%); Instagram (12%); Pinterest (10%) and Tumblr (4%).
