VAD Vortex Assisted Design-patented Ti Planet, Ruby, Abyss and Orbiter second stages offer the unique Mares patented V.A.D. (Vortex Assisted Design) system. This system is unique and allows smooth breathing at all depths and its operating principle is very simple. The air coming from the hose passes through the second stage valve and is conveyed directly to the mouthpiece through the by-pass tube. Within the mouthpiece, the air flow undergoes a "vortex" effect. Whenever this swirl occurs, the core of the vortex creates a lowpressure area. This low pressure helps keep the second stage diaphragm down while inhaling, thus increasing the regulator sensitivity. Integrated VAD-patented A new version of the VAD system, with the bypass tube incorporated into the technopolymer body of the regulator second stage. Turbo flow The new "turbo flow" system allows large volumes of water to flow through the second stage cover with a "vortex" movement, thereby minimizing the likelihood of free-flow and further enhancing performance. Pivoting deflector-patented During the inhalation phase, the deflector positions itself in such a way as to maximize the Venturi effect. During the exhalation phase, it automatically returns to the rest position, in order not to obstruct the flow of exhaled air. Mesh grid-patented Coverplate design, which disperses the water flow around the 2nd stage diaphragm, reduces the likelihood of free-flow. The calibrated holes allow a large amount of water to flow through while at the same time reducing undesirable dynamic effects, even when swimming against a strong current. The design problems arising from the use of such mixtures, and in particular from their incompatibility with certain plastic polymers and rubber, have been fully resolved through the adoption of specific products, such as Viton O-rings and special lubricants. As a result, and especially during the downward kick, only a small portion of the blade pushes the water in the direction of motion, while the remaining part pushes the water in the opposite direction (fig 1). The O.P.B. system, patented by Mares, ensures that the blade is always at an optimal angle during both the upward and downward strokes, thus considerably increasing efficiency. This ensures that all the diver’s muscular effort translates into effective thrust in the direction of motion (fig. 2). Another limitation of traditional fins is the degredation of the thrust produced during the finning stroke, with substantial differences between the maximum and minimum values. The O.P.B. system, on the other hand, ensures optimal thrust throughout every phase of the finning stroke, thereby minimizing fatigue and affording much more fluid movement through the water (fig. 3) The O.P.B. system also makes it possible to virtually eliminate the dead angles which normally exist when using traditional fins (fig. 4). Channel thrust technology When water spills over the blade sides, it does not contribute to thrust and it decreases efficiency (fig. 5). If appropriate channelling occurs, all the displaced water adds thrust. The Avanti fin line was designed to maximize fluid stream channelling. In particular, the Avanti line fins not only channel the displaced water perfectly but, if compared to other fins of similar size, they also displace a much greater quantity of water. Rubberized rib edges The edges of the side ribs, especially in long fins, are the areas undergoing the highest deformation, hence the greatest stress. By coating the rib edges with a special thermoplastic rubber, this critical area becomes more elastic and resistant to abrasion and cracking. In addition, this solution provides higher ribs, thus further improving water channelling, while maintaining equal blade stiffness.
