ITA-AITES WORLD TUNNEL CONGRESS & 34th GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF ITA-AITES
Invitation
Dear Colleagues,
Greetings from New Delhi!
On behalf of the Organising Committee, it is our great pleasure to invite you to
the ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress & 34th ITA General Assembly in Agra, India
from 19-25 September, 2008. The Tunnelling Association of India (TAI) and the
Organizing Committee of ITA WTC 2008 have prepared various programmes
under the theme of Underground Facilities for Better Environment & Safety. The
Congress is of interest to individuals, Regulatory Bodies, Government Departments,
Public Undertakings, Tunnel Building Contractors and Consultants, Equipment
Manufacturers, Technical Research Institutes, Universities and Funding Agencies etc.,
who are actively involved in the tunnel and other underground construction. I request
their participation in various events planned in conjunction with the WTC 2008. The
Congress will provide an open forum for exchanging new information and ideas related
to tunnel and underground space-utilization and is being jointly organized by the
International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA-AITES), Tunnelling
Association of India (TAI) and and Central Board of Irrigation & Power (CBIP).
I also extend a cordial invitation to all the National Committees and Working Group
members of ITA to the 34th General Assembly being organised concurrently.
All the agencies involved in tunnel construction including planners, designers,
construction firms, consultants and equipment manufacturers are also cordially invited
to participate in the exhibition being organized in conjunction with the World Tunnel
Congress at Agra. In view of the large scale tunnelling works to be undertaken for Metro
rail, Roads and the development of Water Resources/Hydropower Projects in the near
future and other underground structures being planned in this country, there is vast
scope for agencies within as well as outside the country, to demonstrate their capability
either in providing services or equipment by taking part in the Tunnel Exposition 2008..
Once again, anticipating your continued cooperation and active participation for
the forthcoming Congress, I look forward to welcome you all at Agra, and hope that
your stay and experience here will be memorable.
Rakesh Nath
Chairman, National Organizing Committee &
President, Central Board of Irrigation & Power &
Chairperson, Central Electricity Authority

Welcome to Agra, India
India - The Host Country
India is endowed with towering mountain ranges, rolling hills, lofty
plateaus and extensive plains which have all played their role in shaping
its cultural, economic and political history. The most outstanding
characteristic of India, and probably one of its greatest charms, is
undeniably, its diversity. India is a country with a sense of individuality
and rich heritage; its civilization is unique in vitality and antiquity. It offers
the visitors something special everywhere, and in everything. It is a land of
treasures, temples, palaces, forts and magnificent scenery. Those seeking
footprints of history will find that India has a vast area, where races and
cultures have battled and blended, and creating sublime achievements in
art, religion and philosophy.
Agra
2
The city of Agra, the quintessence of the grand Mughal era, reigns
to this day in the public mind as the embodiment of
royal grace, imposing architecture and power. Agra is
globally renowned as the city of the Taj Mahal. But this
royal Mughal city has, in addition to the legendary Taj,
many monuments that epitomize the high point of
Mughal architecture. No tour to India can be complete
without paying a visit to this erstwhile capital of the
Mughals and the city of the Taj Mahal, the world’s
most beloved monument. With its laidback lifestyle
and its immense wealth of architecture, handicrafts
and jewellery, Agra is amongst the most remarkable
cities of the world.
Agra, the city of Taj Mahal, a poem in white marble was built in the
16th century by Emperor Shahjahan as a monument of love. Agra
was once the capital of the Mughals and the relics of their glory are
scattered all over the city, from the Taj Mahal to the massive Agra Fort,
the delicately carved Itmad-ud-Daulah’s tomb to Akbar’s deserted
majestic capital Fatehpur Sikri. Agra is India’s best-known destination
for tourists.

NEW DELHI The capital of modern India has behind it centuries of history,
which has enriched its culture. Nowhere has tradition blended with modernity
on a scale as evident in New Delhi. Quite unparalleled in its beauty with
wide tree-lined avenues and boulevards, green belts, flower covered round
– abouts, after all these years, New Delhi still retains its imperialistic hues
and colours. Stately lawns and fountains, the colonial edifice of Rashtrapati
Bhawan – the residence of the President of India, the sweeping drive from the
Bhawan to the India Gate – a monument dedicated to the soldiers who lost
their lives during World War I. Delhi is what you want it to be – a modern city with life or a city
of monuments and history, which has left its legacy in Qutub Minar, Jama Masjid, Red Fort and
the bustling bazaar of Chandni Chowk. The tour will include visit to all these places.

Orchha, a medieval town, synthesizes Hindu and Mughal architecture, its palaces,
temples and cenotaphs, were built in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Bundela
rulers of the area. Situated near the Betwa river, the town has retained much of
its character and has been little affected by the 20th century.
KHAJURAHO: In 1838 Captain T.S. Burt, who was working with the Asiatic Society
in Calcutta, followed up local rumors and ‘discovered’ the great temple complex
rising above the jungle in Khajuraho. The ruins of the original Chandela capital
stretch over 21 square kilometers, but very little apart from the temples remain
VARANASI has been the religious capital of Hinduism since time immemorial. Written records
of the Skanda Purana and the Mahabharata mention its existence as long as 3000 years ago.
It is probably the oldest living city in India, and one of the world’s most ancient. As a place of
devotion and worship, Varanasi attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. Many Hindus in the
latter part of their lives wish to spend their retirement here.

JAIPUR The vibrant capital of Rajasthan is popularly known as the ‘Pink City’
because of the pink coloured buildings in its old city. An ideal base for touring the
royal state, the city has the distinction of being the third jewel of India’s “Golden
Triangle”. Its main claim to fame is that it is India’s first ‘planned’ city built by the
famous 18th century astronomer King Sawai Jai Singh II.
The pink city of Jaipur also the capital of the state of Rajasthan is known for its
forts and palaces and tales of Rajput Chivalry. It is by far the most colourful region

in India. Surrounded by rugged hills, each crowned by a formidable fort; and beautiful
palaces, mansions and gardens dot throughout its precincts. The palaces and forts of yesteryear
that were witness to royal processions and splendour are now living monuments, accepted quite
naturally into the lifestyles of the people of the “pink city”. Browsing through the markets in
Jaipur, where skilled craftsmen display jewellery, paintings, carvings and colourful textiles, is an
enjoyable experience for tourists.

UDAIPUR – the ‘City of Lakes’ is the capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Mewar, one of the
oldest surviving dynasties in the world and was established around 1567 A.D. The chequered
history of Mewar is showcased in the city of Udaipur, which is akin to an oasis in the desert
state of Rajasthan. It is a rich and beguiling tapestry of lakeside palaces, forts, temples, havelis
and gardens, reflecting the varied influences of the centuries.
