Some craft projects take more than one term to complete. If you are planning on continuing with your
course we strongly recommend enrolling for the following term’s course, or re-enrolling, as soon as
possible. Learners are responsible for providing their own materials and tools for craft courses, but in
some instances specialist resources are included in the course fee. Please check the course outline
carefully for information about what you need to provide before you enrol.

CALAT Tutor wins prestigious award
Joe Partridge, part time photography tutor with CALAT, has been named the winner of
the prestigious “Furthering My Learning” award at the annual Next Generation Learning Awards.
These awards from Becta, the government agency for technology in learning, aim to reward
technological excellence in the Further Education and Skills sector. They celebrate the very best
practice across the country and are one of the most important and respected awards in the sector’s
calendar. Joe beat off fierce competition from across the UK to win the “Furthering My Learning” award
in recognition for his inspiring use of technology to excite and encourage learning in this important
sector.
Technology can play a vital role in improving the learning that people do - whether formal or informal,
work-related or for leisure and Joe is a leader in his field in using technology in a productive and
positive way.
On winning the award, Joe said:
“I am thrilled to receive this award and would like to acknowledge all the work
and time people have invested in making Croydon Adult Learning and Training
a centre of excellence for Further and Adult Education photographic teaching.
We are incredibly proud of our work and to have it recognised in a national

Family Learning
What is Family Learning?
Family learning provides a range of opportunities for families in the widest sense (children, dads,
mums, carers, grandparents…) to learn together in order to raise skills across generations. These
intergenerational programmes take place in partnership with schools or other organisations such
as libraries, children’s centres and youth clubs. They enable families to learn in a relaxed and ‘fun’
atmosphere, picking up ideas to reinforce learning at home.
Why is Family Learning important?
Research has shown that parental support is a key factor throughout a child’s education. Family learning
helps adult family members to gain confidence to provide vital help for their children, and helps promote
good relationships within families. It also offers a second chance for dads, mums and carers to return to
learning, to develop their own skills and to be aware of all the other learning opportunities on offer. For
many adults a family learning course can be the first step to taking up further adult learning and training
opportunities or gaining a job. All family learning is offered free to families.
Wider Family Learning projects (WFL)
Wider family learning projects are fun ways for families to learn together. The projects are delivered in
partnership with other organisations such as libraries, museums, health centres, schools and businesses
Family Learning Week - Friday 8-Saturday 16 October 2010
Family Learning Week is a national campaign that raises awareness of the importance and scope of family
learning. Croydon has won six national awards in the last eight years for Family Learning Week. A wide
range of fun, free activities will be taking place across the borough, such as stone carving, wall climbing,
tai chi, stunt bike racing, healthy lunch boxes, storytelling and much more. To find out what’s going on in
your area visit www.calat.ac.uk or www.croydon.gov.uk from mid September.
Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy programmes (FLLN)
Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy (FLLN) programmes take place in partnership with schools,
children’s centres, libraries and other organisations. Dads, mums and carers have the opportunity to
develop their own skills in English, maths or computers and work towards qualifications. They can also
find out how their children are learning and developing and how they can support their learning at home.
Children’s own skills in literacy, language or numeracy are improved, as well as their confidence and
self-esteem.
Big Lottery ‘Life in London’ projects
CALAT Family Learning is currently running informal family learning projects with Big Lottery funding
through a partnership bid with Wandsworth Council, which will continue until June 2011. These fun,
informal projects involve use of IT such as computers, digital photography and recording.
