WE DELIVER ELECTRICITY TO HOMES – Martin R. – Lineman ENERGY HELP Dr. Charles R. Kays 2012 President, NC Azalea Festival 65th North Carolina Azalea Festival | 3 Be sure to join us next year for the 66th North Carolina Azalea Festival, April 10-14, 2013. It has been a pleasure and honor to serve as President of the 65th North Carolina Azalea Festival, an experience that has shown me the true spirit of what is good in our community… the spirit of volunteerism and friendship. On a personal note, I would like to thank my nurses, Kerry and Melissa for their support and patience over the past many months. Also, my wife Carol and daughters Grace and Lilly for their understanding and encouragement. And of course, many, many thanks to the thousands of Azalea Festival volunteers and supporters! We hope you will enjoy all the Festival has to offer. As in years past, we have this year an outstanding Parade, Street Fair, Circus, Concerts, Coin Show, Boxing Tournament, Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour, Historic Wilmington Foundation Home Tour, and more, all festooned with the beautiful Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Belles! It is Southern finery at its best. The Festival is also grateful for the generosity of our Patrons, Donors, Event Sponsors, Community Partners, Benefactors, and Major Sponsors. They are the financial life blood of the Festival, and we owe our continued success to their loyal support. A recent UNCW Economic Impact study, that took nearly a year to complete, revealed that the Festival generates over $50 million dollars in just five days! On behalf of all our hard working volunteers, I would like to thank everyone for their amazing enthusiasm and support. I write to you as only one of thousands of citizens who come together annually to orchestrate the North Carolina Azalea Festival. These citizens work for months to plan and execute every aspect of the Festival… all so we can showcase Wilmington’s warm southern charm, hospitality, and beauty. It is estimated that nearly 600,000 people sample what the Festival has to offer. Welcome to the 65th North Carolina Azalea Festival...”JOIN THE TRADITION!” Beverly Perdue Governor Sincerely, Best wishes for another successful year filled with health and happiness in Wilmington. The North Carolina Azalea Festival has been a symbol of Wilmington since 1948. In addition to enjoying the colors of spring and the crowning of the Azalea Queen, there will be good food, entertainment and fun for the entire family. There is no better way to spend a weekend in North Carolina than enjoying Southern hospitality at the 2012 North Carolina Azalea Festival. On behalf of the State of North Carolina, it is a pleasure to offer warm greetings to everyone attending the 2012 North Carolina Azalea Festival. It is my privilege to welcome visitors to our Port City, where I hope you will take this opportunity to enjoy the many attractions that make Wilmington a wonderful place to live, work and visit. In 2005 Kenny Loggins reunited with his former partner, Jim Messina, to great surprise and critical acclaim. As much personally as musically, the Sittin in Again tour allowed Loggins to rediscover an old friendship. It was so successful and inspiring that they took their show on the road once again in 2009. In 1980 he won the Best Male Pop Vocal Grammy for “This Is It.” Loggins continued to grow, a fact evidenced by his many inëÀi`ÊV>LÀ>ÌÃÊÃÕV Ê>ÃÊVÜÀÌ}ÊÌ iÊ£ÇÊÀ>ÞÜ}Ê-}ÊvÊÌ iÊ9i>Àʺ7 >ÌÊÊÊiiÛiûÊÜÌ Ê ÃÊ}ÌiÊ friend Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers. In the 80s, Loggins became more famous than ever as the king of movie theme songs, due to massive smashes like “I’m Alright” (from Caddyshack), “Footloose” (from Footloose), “Danger Zone” (from Top Gun) and “Nobody’s Fool” (from Caddyshack ll). Loggins also continued to record albums that were introspective and deeply personal including Vox Humana, Back to Avalon, Leap of Faith, The Unimaginable Life and It’s About Time. During this same time he also recorded a Christmas album December, and two successful and acclaimed CDs for children.....Return to Pooh Corner and More Songs from Pooh Corner. When Loggins & Messina split in 1976, Loggins wasted no time in achieving solo stardom with such million-selling albums as Celebrate Me Home, Nightwatch, Keep the Fire and 1982’s High Adventure (“Don’t Fight It” with Steve Perry and “Heart to Heart”). After moving to Los Angeles from Everett, Washington, Loggins scored a job as a $100-a-week staff songwriter and penned four songs on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s 1970 album Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy. Around this same time, Loggins caught the attention of former Buffalo Springfield producer and Poco member, Jim Messina, then working as staff producer at CBS. Originally, Loggins set out to record his solo debut with Messina behind the boards as his producer. As work progressed Messina’s involvement increased and the album subsequently emerged in 1972 as Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin’ In and quickly established this accidental duo as one of the significant recording and touring acts of the 70s. By any standard, Loggins’ commercial impact has been extraordinary; twelve of his albums have gone platinum and beyond. In a world of one hit wonders and fifteen minute sensations, Loggins has enjoyed hit songs in four straight decades - a remarkable testament to his exceptional craftsmanship and stamina. Kenny Loggins has been many things to many people over the past three decades - “a moving target” as he’s put it. In his time, Loggins has been a guitar slinger with a psychedelic rock band, a hot young songwriter with a publishing deal, half of a legendary country-rock duo, a massively successful and accomplished solo artist, a sonic pioneer in the smooth jazz genre, a reigning soundtrack superstar, a rocker, a seeker, as well as an enduring recording artist and live performer whose most recent works have spoken deeply to both young audiences and decidedly adult and worldly concerns. At the heart of it all, there remains a brilliant singer-songwriter and guitarist with a lifelong passion for exploring the endless power of the song to communicate. /ViÌÃ\Êi>V iÀÊÊf{Ç°xäÊUÊ>VÞÊÊfÎÇ°xä / ÕÀÃ`>ÞÊUÊ«ÀÊ£ÓÌ ]Ên\ää« Trask Coliseum, UNC Wilmington ril ay, Ap d s r u h T www.Linprint.com 910.763.5103 I N C T C O M P A N Y 3405 Market Street Wilmington, NC 28405 Publications to business cards...no job is too big or too small. We have different crowds and different responses that always keep it fresh. It’s showing me that this is what I want to do forever. I thrive on this and I’m really enjoying it. Hopefully I can do this for the rest of my life.” His parents, as well as his chorus teacher, believe something else gave Scotty the confidence to perform in public-pitching baseball. Following in the footsteps of his father, who was also a baseball pitcher, Scotty learned to pitch at an early age. “When you are a pitcher, >ÊiÞiÃÊ>ÀiÊÊÞÕ]»ÊÃ>ÞÃÊ ÃÊÌ iÀ]ÊÕ`ްʺ9ÕÊ >ÛiÊÌÊLiÊvVÕÃi`Ê>`Ê>LiÊÌÊ >`iÊÌ iÊ«ÀiÃÃÕÀi°»ÊÌÊÌÕÀÃÊÕÌÊÌ >ÌÊ-VÌÌÞÊÃÊ>ÃÊ«ÌV perfect on the mound as he is onstage; in his last varsity high school game, he pitched a complete shut-out and struck out nine batters. He continued that winning streak on stage of American Idol, where he became the youngest male winner and the only country male winner in the show’s history. He’s now eager to take the next step of his country music career with the release of his debut album, which came out the same week as his 18th birthday. Scotty developed his unique way of looking at things while growing up with older sister Ashley in a musical household in Garner, N.C. By age 3, he was singing “The Muffin Man” to anyone who would listen and a few years later heard repeating the words of those around him in a song. His father, a senior manufacturing systems analyst, and his mother, a real estate agent and a teacher, sang in the church choir, as did their children. His grandmother gave Scotty a book on Elvis Presley when he was in pre-school, so Scotty began walking and talking like the King. His mother listened to artists such as Conway Twitty while driving and Scotty quickly fell with these sounds. He still vividly remembers his first country concert, a show featuring George Strait, Reba McEntire and LeAnn Womack. Clear As Day explores the big philosophies and small details that define life in America, especially the small towns that can sometimes feel confining to teens with a powerful wanderlust for places unseen. With songs such as “Out of Summertime,” “Write My Number On 9ÕÀÊ>`»Ê>`ʺ9ÕÊ>iÊ/ >ÌÊÊ`]»ÊÌ iÊ>LÕÊ`i«VÌÃÊÌ iÊÌÝV>Ì}ÊiÝVÌiiÌÊvÊÌ iÊV}v>}iÊÞi>ÀÃ]ÊÃÕV Ê>ÃÊÌ iÊ anticipation of Friday nights, the intrigue of meeting a pretty girl and the thrill of exchanging class rings. / iÊ>LÕ½ÃÊ`iLÕÌÊÃ}i]ʺÊÛiÊ9ÕÊ/ ÃÊ}»ÊLiV>iÊ>Ê/«Ê£xÊ ÌÊ>`ÊiÞi`ÊÌ iÊ } iÃÌÊV >ÀÌ}Ê`iLÕÌÊvÀÊiÜÊ>ÀÌÃÌÊÃViÊ>ÌÊi>ÃÌÊ 1984, while the video for the song hit No. 1 in just a week after its release. “On this album, I wanted them to make sure they really got who I am, how I grew up in Garner, N.C. and what I am all about,” he says. “It was also really important to me to keep some traditional elements of country music in it, to remember where country came from and I think we did that. I hope that the people who listen to this record will see that and appreciate it and really see exactly who I am.” And who he is, says the album’s producer, Mark Bright, is an amazing singer with tremendous vocal control and depth. “His voice is shockingly great,” he says. “Everybody knows Scotty has a deep voice, but what a lot of people don’t know is he has a pretty high range. His listeners will get to hear the nuances, emotions and actual range of his voice.” Clear As Day is the perfect title for Scotty McCreery’s debut country album because this impressive collection of songs clearly and vividly captures who Scotty is as an artist and young man. America fell in love with Scotty in 2011 when he appeared on American Idol and immediately made a name for himself with his deep and undeniably country voice, strong sense of self, small town roots and unwavering integrity and conviction. In May, he won Season Ten of American Idol when a record breaking 122.4 million voters were cast for the finale and nearly 39 million people tuned into to see the winner’s name announced. Ericka placed as a finalist in this highly competitive, wildly popular series which took her to eight countries in 21 days by traveling over 25,000 miles, and has made her an international television personality. Ericka is a graduate of the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Arts degree and is the founder of the Crown Jewel Foundation, an organization that invests in the lives of young women and encourages them to strive for excellence and overcome obstacles in achieving all their goals. Mere months before, Ericka captured a part of history by breaking the color barrier and becoming the first and only African American woman ever to be crowned Miss Florida in the history of Florida’s most prestigious pageant. She dedicated her 9i>ÀÊvÊ-iÀÛViÊ>ÃÊÌ iÊ >Ì>ÊëiëiÀÃÊvÊiÊvÊÌ iÊ7À`½ÃÊ>À}iÃÌÊÃÕÀViÃÊvÊÃV >Àà «Ê««ÀÌÕÌiÃÊvÀÊÜiÊ to her platform entitled “United We Stand. Divided We Fall Behind: Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion.”Through over one hundred speaking engagements and key-note addresses, she was able to share her vision for a more unified and culturally diverse America. She used the title of Miss America 2004 to share the tools needed to move beyond mere tolerance and move towards embracing the diversity in communities while establishing an awareness of the importance of inclusion. This is a subject for which she remains passionate and is still a sought after speaker on the topic. Ericka Dunlap first rose to National acclaim when she was crowned Miss America 2004 on the historic runway in Atlantic City on the night of September 20th. For Ericka, that wasn’t the first time she had made headlines. The Azalea Belle Committee is chaired by Cape Fear Garden Club members: Cathy Poulos, Linda McCall, and Donna Pendergrast. Congratulations to the 2012 Azalea Belles listed below: The Belles have grown from that original seven to one hundred thirty-four in 2012.. Most of the dresses worn today are supplied by three approved dressmakers, Almaa Fennell, Kay Counts Godwin, and Debbie Scheu. The Azalea Belles have trulyy become ambassadors for the city of Wilmington and have come to symbolize thee festival season as much as the flowers they represent. The Azalea Belles enhance thee beauty of many events during the festival, but their primary duty continues to be ass greeters to visitors in the gardens on the Azalea Garden Tour. Beautiful young girls wearing hoop-skirted Antebellum dresses first appeared ass greeters in the gardens during the Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour© in n 1969. Mrs. Harley Vance, then president of the Cape Fear Garden Club, is credited d with introducing this idea. Seven young ladies, five of whom were daughters of club b members, donned dresses worn to a southern ball or made by Mrs. Augusta Counts.. When the girls sat in the gardens that year, the concept of the Cape Fear Garden n Club, Inc. As the ultimate recognition of the talent of these budding artists, The Thalian Association Children’s Theater (TACT) is including the Top 25 artwork in its Emerging and Known Artists Exhibit, currently hanging in the Community Arts Center in the Historic Hannah Block USO Building at 2nd and Orange Streets through the end of April. The Children’s Art Contest, now in its 3rd year, has morphed into another wonderful Azalea Festival tradition and broadened its reach into the community. The contest began in the fall of 2011 with an invitation to all elementary school-aged children in New Hanover County to submit artwork using the prompt, “Which traditions of the NC Azalea Festival mean the most to you?”. The Art teachers accelerated into high gear with integrated history lessons and Art assignments. Entries ranged from different depictions of the world famous Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Belles, the parade, the circus, fireworks, the Street Fair vendors and activities, princesses, The Queen, and, of course, the main attraction of the Festival, the Azalea. The Top 10 winners were announced at a special ceremony at Bellamy Elementary in February. As an added bonus, the schools with the highest number of entries submitted were treated to an Italian Ice Celebration, courtesy of Rita’s Italian Ice. 4th and 5th graders from Bellamy Elementary and 5th graders from Parsley Elementary won this coveted prize. Cameron Holmes And the winner is...Cameron Holmes, a bubbly 5th grader at Bellamy Elementary in Wilmington, North Carolina who really likes to draw! After learning about the history of the Azalea Festival in Art class, she knew she wanted to incorporate different aspects of the festival into her drawing, and that she did. Her colored pencil drawing brought the Boxing Tournament, the Circus, and the Azalea Queen to life on a picture perfect Azalea Festival Day. Cameron’s art was selected from 115 entries submitted from six public and private elementary schools in New Hanover County. Cameron was especially excited to have been named the 2012 NC Azalea Festival Children’s Art Contest winner because she said she has never won anything before. Cameron also enjoys hanging out with her friends and jumping on her trampoline. She thanks her Art teacher, Kemmie Bayliss, for teaching such a fun lesson and encouraging her and her classmates to get their creative juices flowing for this Art contest, and she is looking forward to riding in the Azalea Festival Parade. Residing today in the beautiful foothills of Northeast Georgia, Terry continues to explore her love of color in her portraits and other subjects while striving to increase her knowledge and skill as an artist. “Warm and cool color on form is my main interest as a painter.” Terry’s watercolors and oil portraits contain color harmonies and a luminosity rarely seen in contemporary art. She is adept at capturing the delicate features and skin tones of young children, who constitute the primary subject of her portraits. She believes watercolor to be the ideal medium for young subjects because it allows for a subtlety of tone - achieved through multiple transparent layers - that is unattainable with any other medium in the quite same manner. Terry has always been interested in a wide variety of subject matter, from nautical subjects to the human figure. Her fascination with the figure has garnered her more than a hundred portrait commissions of adults and children since committing to portraiture full time in 2000. In 2003, Terry was commissioned by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to paint a portrait of Vice Chancellor Dr. Robert Tyndall, the former Dean of Education. Her paintings and limited edition prints are included in many private and corporate collections across the country and abroad. Terry is currently represented by two prestigious international portrait agencies, Portraits Incorporated based in Birmingham, AL and Portraits South based in Raleigh, NC. She is a member of the Portrait Society of America. Among her accomplishments, Terry was featured in the 2007 spring edition of Watercolor Magazine, a national publication, “The Delicate Subject of Children’s Portraiture”. Terry Sellers Harrison is a contemporary realist painter with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. After graduation, Harrison began her career as a painter and teacher using her inspiration from the beautiful light of the coastal Carolinas.
