THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Dear Friends in Christ –
Advent approaches! I can’t believe how quickly Christmas is coming.
To prepare to celebrate, a number of very engaging events at Saint Paul’s are coming up. So please make
sure to mark your calendars.
Next weekend’s Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) needs your help.
CCHD was founded to end the cycle of poverty in the United States by funding organizations that help people help
themselves. With the tradition of improving education, housing situations, and economic development, CCHD
continues to make a positive impact on communities nationwide. Your contribution will defend human dignity and
help those living on the margins of our society.
This year, we will participate in our neighborhood’s Winter Eve celebration, the first Monday after
Thanksgiving, November 30th. The front of the bulletin has the full schedule.
Also, please make plans to attend the Fordham University Lessons and Carols on Saturday, December 5 th
at 8 PM. Admission is free, but come early. It’s a service of readings and carols to prepare you for the celebration
of Christmas.
The Giving Tree will be up after Thanksgiving and gives us the opportunity to help those in need during
the Christmas season.
The Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy opens on Tuesday, December 8th, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Pope Francis writes that he has called for the year because: "Perhaps we have long
since forgotten how to show and live the way of mercy … The temptation ... to focus exclusively on justice made us
forget that this is only the first, albeit necessary and indispensable step … The time has come for the Church to
take up the joyful call to mercy once more … It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and
struggles of our brothers and sisters … Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope."
In addition to masses on December 8th, our new Melita Ensemble will present a special evening program
after the evening 6 PM mass.
These are just a few of the events happening at Saint Paul’s – please join us in celebrating the presence of
Christ in our community and city.
Peace,
Fr Gil

The Abbey by Fr. James Martin, SJ
Tuesday, November 24th from 6:30-8:30 PM
A divorced single mom, Anne, can sometimes barely cope
with life and struggles to make sense of the death of her
young son. A former architect who had a promising career,
Mark, works as a handyman and wonders how his life got
off track. The abbot of the Abbey of Saints Philip and James,
Father Paul, sometimes questions how to best live a life that
secludes him so thoroughly from the world. At a Pennsylvania abbey, this unlikely trio will discover the answers they
seek—a miracle of hope and understanding that bears witness to the surprising power of God to bring healing and
wholeness to our lives.

Why Do People Become Catholic?
People decide to become Catholics because they hope to
find in the community of the Catholic Church something
they are looking for. During a ceremony on Nov. 1 we welcomed eight people into our adult Christian initiation program. We asked them to tell us what they are looking for.

Paz – Padre Gil
