The horse and trail associations on the following pages of this special section of Saddle Up! Magazine are here
today because of a strong sense of volunteerism. If you find that you have extra time weekly, or even monthly, the
organizations that have advertised in our 2016 Membership Drive could use your help.
Even if you do not own a horse, but would like to learn more about them, volunteering is a great way to find out
more about our four legged equine friends. Working behind the scenes at a horse show is a wonderful way to find out
if showing horses is for you. Helping clean-up trails, campgrounds and staging areas are also a great way to
volunteer and help out a worthy organization.
Find an organization in either Saddle Up! Magazine or online near you, and give them a call or send them an
email. They will be happy to tell you when the next volunteer opportunity is available. You can also attend a board
meeting or two, there is always someone available to answer questions and provide additional information.

The Arabian Horse Association of Michigan
The Arabian Horse Association of Michigan (AHAM), is one of four clubs in Michigan dedicated to the promotion and well-being of the Arabian horse.
AHAM works in conjunction with the other clubs to help with this promotion. AHAM is affiliated with Region 13, which encompasses Michigan and
Indiana. They are actively involved in promoting the regional show and always strive to bring new people to the Region and their regional show.
These “Amateur Extravaganza” classes are offered in all three
performance divisions, Saddle Seat, Hunt Seat, and Western, and are
open to purebred and Half-Arabians. These are jackpot classes, and the
association adds a considerable amount of prize money to the pot.
AHAM was established more than 60 years ago. This club was started to
benefit all of the Arabian horse enthusiasts in the Michigan area.
AHAM prides themselves on being in-tune with the wants and needs of
their members. They are extremely exhibitor friendly and are always
open to new ideas that will add benefit to their membership. AHAM keeps
their members up-to-date on current happenings with the monthly enewsletter, and with daily and weekly updates on their website,
www.miarabhorse.com, their Facebook page (Arabian Horse
Association of Michigan), or on their twitter account @AHAMMichigan.
The AHAM club is open for anyone to join, and they do have members
from all over the country that affiliate themselves with AHAM. To join
AHAM, please log onto their website at www.miarabhorse.com and click
on the membership info icon. This will guide you to the appropriate forms
to complte. Or, you may email the Membership coordinator at
judyzumbach@gmail.com.
AHAM holds two shows annually to help with the promotion and to give
back to their membership. The first show is usually the first weekend in
May and is called the Michigan All Arabian Horse Show. This horse show
has been in existence for 56 years and has always proven to be a
competitive, exhibitor friendly horse show. In recent years, the Michigan
All Arabian Horse Show has added exciting classes aimed at
encouraging this healthy competition and giving back to the amateurs in
Region 13.

Purpose Statement:
The Buchanan Westerners Riding Club Incorporated is a non-profit organization run solely by its membership. Our non-profit
organization is dedicated to the American Family through their love of horses. Our goal is to be able to continue supporting programs
involving Horseback Riding for Handicapped Children, High School Equestrians, and 4-H Youth Activities.
Buchanan Westerners was founded in 1946 and boasts a membership of about 125 members. Our membership runs on a calendar
year. Buchanan Westerners does not focus on any particular breed, although we are approved through PAC. We hold two shows each
month from May through September in addition to various clinics and fun show events. Our annual banquet is held in the late fall and
offers several High Point awards, including age divisions as well as pleasure and gaming. All members are automatically eligible for
high point awards. We offer one primary fund-raiser per year; a Tack Swap held in the spring and a variety of smaller fund-raisers
throughout the year.
We have a website; www.buchananwesterners.com where many of your questions may be answered. If you have questions and wish
to speak to someone, the board of directors are listed on the website as well. Please call one of the officers of the board or the horse
show manager for more detailed questions.
Monthly meetings for Buchanan Westerners are the second Thursday of each month at 7:00pm at the Buchanan Westerners
clubhouse in Buchanan, MI.
We offer a couple of Walk/Trot classes for adults and children, which are restricted to Walk/Trot only. Exhibitors in Walk/Trot are not
eligible for other Walk/Trot/Canter classes. So bring your babies to the walk/trot classes, and have a great experience and a lot of fun!

Does your association have a Mission Statement? We are a Non-Profit organization dedicated to the promotion and advancement
of Arabian and Half-Arabian Horses. We host four shows each year, offering a wide variety of classes that provide the perfect
environment for starting a young horse or rider, as well as a strong level of competition for more experienced equestrians.
What year was the association founded? 1986, we are one of
the largest Arabian Horse organizations in Michigan.

and Half-Arabian horses.

How many events do you hold each year? Four shows.
Where are they normally held? Locations vary.
Is there a youth division? We do not have a Youth Division,
but do offer classes broken out by age group.
Is there an amateur division? No, classes are split by age
groups and owner-to-ride and we also offer open classes that
allow trainers to compete.
Are there daily high points? We offer weekend highpoint for
main arena and dressage classes.
Are there year end awards? We provide year-end awards for
almost every class we offer. We also have special traveling
trophies for high point mare, stallion, etc.
Do you have an annual banquet? Yes, in November.
Do you have an annual fund-raiser? No.
Do you have a Stallion Service Sale or Futurity? No.
Do you have monthly meetings? Yes. We have a monthly
board of directors’ meeting, members are welcome to attend.
We hold a General Membership meeting in April, to cover all
new items before the start of show season.

that works with the DNR to maintain and improve the trails for everyone.

We welcome all breeds to enjoy our trails.
What events do you hold each year? Two annual campouts,
one in May and one the third week of September. We also
have ride/potlucks and trail work days.

Lake Event Area in the Fort Custer Recreation Area. The
ride/potlucks and work days are at the equestrian trail head.

its usage. Our future goals also include: expanding

2016? Hungerford Trail Riders Association will continue to focus
on maintaining clean and safe trails, provide picnic tables for trail
riders, add a pavilion in the future, encourage members to invite
guest riders, and spread the word to our fellow equine
enthusiasts of the awesome trail system available in our
community.

of the Hungerford Trail Riders Association (HTRA) is:
a) To preserve, protect, improve and maintain the
equine campground and the horse trails; and
b) To network with regional and national organizations with

Kensington Trail Riders Association (KTRA) is a group of like minded individuals that span both genders and all age
groups. Our horses are every breed and color imaginable. The common threads that connect us are our love of riding and
a desire to keep Kensington Metro Park as a destination for trail riders. With more than 25 miles of equine riding,
Kensington provides wide, sandy trails, diversity of terrain, and ease of access. KTRA members have work bee activities so
everyone can enjoy the trails year-round for club activities and camping events. One of the highlights this past year was
the Billy Gunn Trail Challenge where we encouraged members and non-members alike to come and ride a mile, ride a
trail, or ride all the trails in the park on a single day. We generally host two fun-filled camping weekends each year - one in
spring, one in fall. Both camping weekends have a camp breakfast on Saturday morning and a camp potluck with a band
on Saturday night. It is a wonderful, fun-filled event.

SUE ARMSTRONG - Sue has been President for the Pinckney Trail
Riders Association (PTRA) since 2010. She obtained the PTRA’s
501c3 IRS designation and has helped develop and implement
fund-raising efforts for the club. She has developed a working
relationship with the DNR and negotiated and executed a Friends
Agreement for the PTRA with the DNR. Sue has been instrumental
in major improvements to State facilities for equestrians. She also
developed and implemented youth and community involvement
with horses. Sue currently owns 3 horses and a donkey, and is coowner of Armstrong Enterprises for 28 years.
DARLENE (DEE) BOZAK - Dee is currently president of West
Michigan Arabian Horse Association and has been on their board
for 15 years. She is in her 21st year as a 4-H Horse Leader, and
Foods and Crafts Leader. Presently she is working for her judges
card for the state of Michigan. Dee has owned several breeds and
is also a MIHA coach for Lakeview High School.
ANN LOUISE PEABODY-BUDD - As a young
girl growing up on an apple orchard in Fenton,
MI, I was the only one in my family of 6 who
really wanted a horse. In 1970 I met my
husband, Dr. Jim Budd in London, England, I
was his tour guide. We were married in 1971
and a dear friend brought us a $17.50 pony
and tied him to a Willow tree in our backyard.
And, that was the beginning of our KaTalPa Arabians involvement
in the Michigan horse industry. Our three older sons and Jim all
showed Arabians and Half-Arabians in all divisions in local,
regional and national events. Our daughter Marta and son Dusty
started showing in lead line and continued showing in English,
western, equitation, costume and park and Jim got involved with
Arabian race horses. As an older student at MSU in Ag Comm©2016 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • JANUARY 2016
unications, I was able to complete 4 internships at the Arabian
National Championships as Assistant Commercial manager
which gave me some wonderful background experience when the
expanded MHC Expo was being discussed. Bev Grunheid and I
were given the assignment of co-chairing the MHC International
Stallion Exhibition and Trade Show that was held in the Lansing
Civic Arena. I have had the wonderful honor of representing the
Michigan Horse Council as their Horse Expo Chair and Co-Chair
for 32 of the 33 years we have operated under the expanded
format. A wonderful, active and determined committee and
administrator have been actively representing the Michigan Horse
Council producing one of the best Horse Expos in the US. Thank
you all for your vote of confidence.
KARYL DUNAWAY - Present MHC Treasurer since 2002 (main
account). Karyl has been on the board of directors for the Walking
Horse Association of Michigan in a number of capacities,
including 2000 State Vice President and Reporter for Region 3.
She has worked on the MHC Expo for many years, the first four
assisting Dr. Dunn in presenting seminars and then taking over
fully for Dr. Dunn upon his retirement. Karyl served as part of the
organizing committee for MHC ad hoc Gaited Horse Sub
Committee and has served as co-chairprson for the organizing
committee for the MHC 25th Anniversary Celebration in 1997.
Karyl is currently a MHC delegate for Turning Point Donkey
Rescue and 2nd delegate for the Shiawassee Trail Riders.
KATHY GLEW - Kathy is a Therapeutic Riding Instructor through
PATH International. Besides teaching riding to students with
cognitive and emotional disabilities since 1990, she travels the
country testing and certifying new instructors who meet the PATH
criteria. Kathy lives with her husband, five dogs and many horses
in DeWitt, MI.

Meet the Officers of the Michigan Horse Council
MIKE FOOTE - Mike has been a horse owner for over 28 years, and
has trail ridden in many states, including Michigan. He has been a
MHC member since 2004, and served as MHC President from
2007 to 2014. He currently serves as an Ionia Horse Trails
Association board member, also on the MI State Park Advisory
Committee (replacing discontinued CCMSP), the MI Equine
Trailways Subcommittee, and the MI Trails Advisory Committee.
IDA GLASSBROOK - Ida has been a part of the MHC for 16 years,
starting with the Expo as the Youth Volunteer Coordinator and later
becoming an Executive Board Member. She is currently Secretary
of the MHC. She lives in Battle Creek with her boyfriend, Ryan and
her son Parker Corbett. Her oldest son lives in Mason. Her family
raised and trained Haflingers for many years, she currently owns
two Haflingers and an Appaloosa. She is very active with her son
Parker in 4-H with his horse club Reins and Riders, and his
shooting sports club Ingham Sharp Shooters. She also
participates with Ryan in raising and training Labrador Retrievers.
MARILYN GRAFF - Marilyn began her
involvement with the Michigan Horse Council
in 1973 as the MHC was formed. When the
original office of Secretary/Treasurer was
separated into two positions, she was elected
treasurer of the Council. Marilyn was on the
original planning board for the first Stallion
Expo and Trade Show held at the Lansing Civic Center in East
Lansing, MI. She has participated from the first through the 31st
Stallion Expo, now called the Michigan Horse Expo, in some form
as a committee member, chair or vendor. Marilyn has served on
the MHC Executive Committee for many years, and currently
holds the position of co-chair of the Membership Committee, and
Expo Administrator for the Michigan Horse Expo.
M. JEAN LIGON - Currently MHC Vice President. Jean joined the
MHC in 1995 as an individual member and was a founding
member of the Brighton Trail Riders Association two years later.
Jean was a delegate for this group for many years. She is currently
a delegate for the Livingston Horsemen’s Association. Jean is an
attorney who practices in environmental, land use, real property
and equine law. She chaired the 1997 committee that redrafted the
MHC bylaws. In that same year, she and her husband, Orvin
Rohloff, began managing the volunteer efforts at the MHC Stallion
Expo. This is Jean’s tenth year serving as chair of the the
Legislative/Land Use/Environmental Committee which keeps her
very involved in environmental issues pertaining to horses.
CONNIE MAYNARD - I became the delegate for Augusta Township
Mounted Patrol (ATMP) when they joined the MHC in 1998. The
ATMP is a mounted neighborhood watch group that was started
and trained by Washtenaw deputies Chuck Mullins and Lisa King
along with State Police detective Lorenzo Veal III in 1994. At this
time we are the only mounted neighborhood group in the state.
Besides patrolling our neighborhood, we have done a couple of
search and rescues, run the first aid booth for 4-H, night security
for J Bar J Rodeo and helped local churches with fund raisers. I
have been a 4-H leader in Washtenaw Co. for 21 years and on the
horse board for 6 years. In 2009, I was named the 4-H leader of the
year in Washtenaw. I have been a member of the Michigan Trail
Riders since 1986 and have crossed the state 17 times with
numerous partial crossing. 14 of the crossings have been on my
Paint mare, Lady Desperado. In 2010, Lady Desperado and I were

the fourth in the world to reach 10,000 hours with the APHA Ride
America program and were presented with a belt buckle. In 2014
MHC named us Horse/Rider of the year. Desperado and I have
been in two Inaugural parades in Washington, DC with the
Michigan mounted police drill team and we hope to make a third
one in 2017. We have also participated in the Horse Expo’s color
presentation with the MI Mounted Police.
DON PACKARD - Don served in the US Army from 1963 to 1994.
He was promoted to Lt. Colonel at age 42, and was an Operations
Officer. He has been a Kiwanis member since 1993 and has
served as club President twice. Don chaired an eleven million
dollar bond initiative for Pinckney Community Schools, and has
also served as President of the Parent Teacher Association. Don
has been a MHC delegate for the past 5 years and is a member of
the Walking Horse Association of MI (WHAM), the Nat’l. Walking
Horse Assoc., and the MI Trail Riders Association. He has ridden
the shore-to-shore 5 times. Don has shown extensively with his
15 year old Tennessee Walking Versatility Horse, Sunny. They
enjoy riding together, and Don says that he is indebted to Sunny.
Don has been married to his beautiful wife Jan for 50 years and
have 3 sons. Don is currently MHC President.
ELLEN VAN SLYKE - Ellen is a board member of the new Big Oaks
trail group, Equestrian Friends of Big Oaks. She has been involved
in the equine world for about 30 years with gaited horses. She has
shown and rode trails during the past 30 years. Ellen has enjoyed
the successes of national titles, as well as the personal
satisfaction of helping maintain and develop trails all around the
state of Michigan. She remains active in trail friend groups. She
hopes, with the assistance of the MHC, to extend grants and help
equine groups across the state of Michigan.
DR. KAREN WAITE - Karen holds the
Education Chair for the MHC. She is an
Extension Specialist for Michigan State
University. She is responsible for the
organization and development of educational programs and materials for
Extension 4-H Youth Development, adult
4-H leaders and Extension staff in the
areas of horse management, nutrition,
training, equitation, judging and showmanship. She handles the coordination of the MI 4-H Horse
Program, state level horse related youth activities, as well as
working closely with horse industry organizations involved with
youth and State 4-H Youth Development Office. She also provides
instruction in the Agriculture Technology Horse Management
Program for Animal Science.
WENDY WALKER - MHC Communications
Chair for 2 years. She promotes the MHC and
the horse industry throughout the State of
Michigan. Wendy also has been a web
designer for 10 years. Wendy was been on
the Board of Directors for 10 years and
previous Secretary of the Ionia Horse Trails
Association for 5 years. Wendy is currently the Secretary for the
Friends of Ionia State Recreation, a new non-profit friends group in
the Ionia State Recreation Area. She is an avid trail rider, owns 18
horses with several being rescues and loves to camp with her
family and horses.

Our Goals
Throughout Association leadership and coaching, it is our goal that the student members derive whatever enjoyment
and benefits possible as a result of participating as riders in horsemanship education programs and interscholastic
competition. The MIHA and Coaches will involve each equestrian student (male and female) to the extent possible in team competition. The
MIHA and Coaches will provide situations where each equestrian team member can be exposed to cooperative working experience that leads
to common group goals. The MIHA and Coaches will provide each equestrian team member with the opportunities to experience good
leadership, fair play, horsemanship, sense of honesty, character, pride and good
sportsmanship at all times. The MIHA and Coaches will always provide, conduct and host equestrian interscholastic programs with proper
instructions, coaching methods, conditioning rules, health, safety and welfare of each participant.

Does your association have a Mission Statement?
The MJMHA is the Statewide ruling and sanctioning body for the Morgan horse owners and riders in the State of Michigan. We will perform all
of the governing duties for our members in accordance with all applicable rules. Additionally, we will promote this most versatile and regal
American horse breed through the education of our members as well as the public at large. We will perform these duties with professionalism
and enthusiasm in the spirit of ethical sportsmanship for the good of the breed and our members.
What year was the association founded? June, 1954
What is the average number of members? Currently we have 180
family and individual memberships, with children of the families
considered, the number exceeds 225.
Does your membership run Jan. to Dec. of each year? Yes
What breed/discipline does the association focus on? We are
specific to the versatile Morgan breed.
How many events do you hold each year? Currently we have six
major events or activities.
Where are they normally held? Venues throughout Michigan.
Do your shows have Nat’l. Association approval/affiliation? We
have affiliation with the American Morgan Horse Association and
the United States Equestrian Federation.
Is there a youth division? Yes, we especially promote the youth
divisions in our events.
Is there an amateur division? All classes of our competitions are
open to amateurs where they meet the age requirements.
Are there daily high points? Some of our competitions present
high point rider and horse awards.
Are there year end awards? Year end awards are presented to
high point riders and horses in over 100 categories. Awards
include plaques for the champion and tri color ribbons for
champion and reserve and ribbons for the four runner ups.
We also have several perpetual awards.

Do you have an annual banquet? Yes, we have an annual award
banquet where the awards are presented.
Do you have an annual fund-raiser? We have an annual tack sale
to raise funds and then rely on the generosity of our local sponsors
and competitors to sponsor classes and our support events.

support the Michigan Morgan Horse Breeders Futurity.
Do you have monthly meetings? We have 10 board meetings
throughout the year. Members and the public are always welcome.
Do you have a newsletter? Our newsletter is in transition with new
editors, we have traditionally published 10 during the year but
have not met that goal the last few years.

educational non-profit organization focused on providing a model of horsemanship that optimizes the partnership of horse and rider for their mutual benefit. The
mission of the Western Dressage Association® is to honor the horse, to value the partnership between horse and rider and to celebrate the legacy of the American West
which it focuses on through its offerings of educational opportunities and events to the equestrian community.
WDAMI Mission Statement: The mission of the Western Dressage
Association@ of Michigan (WDAMI) is to build an equine community
that combines Western tradition with Classical Dressage. We honor the
horse. We value the partnership between horse and rider. Join us as we
celebrate the legacy of the American West.
What year was the Association founded? WDAMI became an official
affiliate of the Western Dressage Association® of America on February
3, 2014. December of 2013, WDAA and its affiliates became the
recognized affiliate for the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF).
Current Membership: To date, the WDAMI has 64 members.
Membership Parameters: Membership starts the day you make
payment for both the National and the State organizations and expires
on December 31 of that year. The dual membership fee is $50. $25 goes
to the National organization and $25 goes to the Michigan affiliate.
All Breeds are welcome: WDAMI welcomes all breeds, mules, ponies.
Year End Awards are given in many categories.
Shows and clinics: Many clubs and organizations throughout Michigan
host Western Dressage classes in their shows. Clinics are scheduled
throughout the state as well. Show schedule is available on the website
www.wdami.org or on the Western Dressage Association® of Michigan
Facebook page.
*Year End Awards: Show year is Nov. 1 - Oct. 31. Tests must be the
current USEF WD tests. Tests shall be ridden according to WDAA and
USEF rules. WDAMI awards Introductory - Level 3. Any schooling show
in Michigan that offers WD classes open to all breeds is eligible. Classes
must be judged by a USDF "L" or a USEF dressage judge.

Annual Banquet: Yes. The banquet is held in the center of the state to

Arabian Community Shows (ACS) are held in Marne, MI, and
our Class ‘A’ Fall Classic is in Mason, MI.

Yes, AHA and USEF.
Is there a youth division? Yes, the five divisions we have at the
ACS are: 10 & under walk/trot, rookie walk/trot (rookie horse
OR rookie rider), 13 & under, 14-18, and 19 & over.
Is there an amateur division? Yes. All the classes at the ACS
shows are for amateurs. Professionals may show, but will not
be judged.
Are there daily high points? Yes, we have a trophy for each of
those divisions at each ACS show.

From US 131 - Bradley exit #61. East on 129th Avenue, which
becomes Chief Noonday Road, approx. 11.5 miles to Yankee
Springs Road. Turn right or South 2.7 miles to Duffy Road. Turn

YSTRA MISSION STATEMENT
The purpose of the Yankee Springs Trail Riders Association is to preserve, protect, improve and expand existing horse campgrounds
and the horse trail network in the Yankee Springs Recreation Area, and the surrounding areas, for use by horsemen, their families and
the general public for horse riding and camping.
To develop and maintain good communications and working relationships with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Parks
and Recreation Division, and/or its successors. To assist them in their efforts to maintain adequate horse campgrounds and riding trails
and to help generate revenue that will enable horse campgrounds to become self-supporting.
To promote horse riding and camping by providing information to the general public on the location of horse campground facilities,
horse trails and the recreational benefits available.
Our Association was founded in 1989 by a group of riders that had been using the trails for quite some time. They decided that
much more could be accomplished by organizing, and we have grown to over a hundred family memberships since then. We are a
calendar year organization, offering family membership of $20.00 that runs from January 1st to December the 31st. We also offer a
lifetime membership as well.
As a trail riding group we try to have at least 3 events per year, one being a fundraiser for another nonprofit organization, such as
Cancer Families United. We also like to have a kid's FREE event once a year and then a club fund raiser for improvement's to camp and
trails. Our events are held at our “ADOPT-A-PARK” Horseman’s Campground on Duffy Road in the Yankee Springs Recreation Area.
Our monthly meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month, usually with a potluck first and the meeting to follow. Except
our Annual banquet meeting which is subject to new time and location as the board sees to change each year. At the annual meeting
we usually have some youth awards that we like to present to our outstanding youth participation. Our newsletters are biannual.
YSTRA will continue to improve and create more equestrian trails for our trail system with the help of our public land managers. We
will continue to work to improve the campground and possibly bring electricity to our horse camp one day.
