NEWS FROM THE EU
Digital Single Market Strategy for Europe
The European Commission adopted the Digital Single
Market Strategy on 6 May 2015 which includes a set
of targeted actions to better access for consumers
and businesses to digital goods and services across
Europe, creating the right conditions and a level
playing field for digital networks and innovative
services to flourish, maximising the growth potential
of the digital economy.
The Digital Single Market Strategy sets out 16 key
actions under 3 pillars which the Commission will
deliver by the end of 2016. The aim of the Digital
Single Market is to tear down regulatory walls and
finally move from 28 national markets to a single one.
A fully functional Digital Single Market could contribute
€415 billion per year to EU economy and create
hundreds of thousands of new jobs.
FLASH EUROBAROMETER 413:
Companies engaged in online activities
Digital is already an important economic sector for
Europe, growing at seven times the rate of the rest
of the economy. In spite of this, there is still no Digital
Single Market in the European Union.
Cross-border e-commerce is growing much more
slowly than national e-commerce: consumers are
often blocked from buying goods, services or content
online from other Member States. In addition, many
companies either do not sell across borders, or only
sell certain items cross-border.
To gather this information, as well as broader
background on the current digital commerce
experience of retailers, survey was conducted by
TNS Political & Social at the request of the European
Commission, Directorate-General for Communication
Networks, Content and Technology.
Survey was carried out in 26 Member States of the
European Union between 19 January and 6 February
2015.
On average, 25.7% of a company’s total sales value in
2014 came from online sales. Companies in northern
and central areas of Europe tend to have had the
highest proportion of sales value in 2014 from online.
80% of companies sell online using their own websites
or apps, while around one third use small (35%) or
large (33%) commercial platforms and 22% use EDItype transactions.
