PROJECT CONNECT BRINGS BUSINESS
& EDUCATION TOGETHER
Students and teachers benefit every day thanks to the generosity
of Project Connect donors. By connecting community
businesses and individuals with teachers and their “wish
lists,” the program gives everyone an opportunity to support
education.
Teacher lists are published weekly in The Island Packet, along
with “wishes granted.” But the benefits go far beyond, according
to educators like Colleen Wynne, 2009 Sue West Educator of the
Year recipient who talks about Project Connect and how parents
can get their student off to a great start for school.
Q: How do programs such as Project Connect help teachers
in the classroom?
A: Project Connect helps by highlighting the many and varied
needs of teachers as they reach to provide for the children they
teach on a daily basis. I think one of the strongest impacts is that
it spotlights opportunities for members in our community and
gives every business an opportunity to support education. One
of our teachers received 25 sets of much needed thesauruses and
dictionaries; others received 50 5-inch binders, art supplies,
digital equipment, and donations for educational classroom trips.
Q: What’s your top advice for parents to help make this a
successful school year?
A:
For parents in this busy 21st century environment,
“schedule” dedicated quality time with their children. Parents
should be keenly aware that children are desperate for positive
attention from their parents. You can never go back and capture
quality time once they are grown.
Also, carve out the time to eat dinner together every day while
having conversation, read together every day to establish
the importance of literacy, and limit TV/computer time to
encourage children to get outside and play.
Q: The Sue West Educator of the Year Award recognizes a
teacher with passion and dedication in educating students
as well as giving them inspiration to succeed. What is
your guiding inspiration for instilling confidence and
determination in your students?
A. My guiding inspiration is based upon the premise that
learning is a process and a journey that the children and I are
on together. I believe in each child and their capacity to learn.

State of the Region 2010
The State of the Region Breakfast shines a spotlight on what’s
happening in the Lowcountry.

people attended last year to find out how our area leaders are
tackling the biggest issues shaping our regional economy.
Join the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce
for the 15th Annual State of the Region event and be part of this
important, interactive forum. Cast your live electronic vote at the
event on the issues that define this year’s regional agenda, and
hear how our leaders respond.
County Council Chairman Weston Newton, Hilton Head Island
Mayor Tom Peeples and Bluffton Mayor Lisa Sulka will address
concerns that impact business, tourism and our quality of life.

Whether you’re building a new house or renovating an existing home,
clean burning natural gas is your environmentally friendly energy
choice. Natural gas appliances not only make everyday life better,
they’re cost-effective to operate, generally last longer and require
little maintenance. In addition to the actual environmental benefits
of lower emissions, plus high-energy efficiency, more than 80% of
the natural gas used in the U.S. is domestically produced.
A home with natural gas reduces your impact on the environment
without sacrificing comfort and convenience. If you want to make
your home a little greener, while enjoying the comforts of home,
ask for natural gas. To learn more, call Parks Moss at 843-815-8808
or Melanie Bullman at 843-815-8818.

Back to School Time:
Golden Apple Program
Gets A+!
Teachers are back at school preparing for another exciting
year. One thing they can count on is the Golden Apple Program
to help them get ready. With special offerings and valuable
discounts, this is one chamber program that already makes
the grade.
Thanks to participating chamber members, teachers are able
to use benefit cards for purchasing goods and services like
car repairs, financial services, restaurant meals and more.
More than 90 chamber businesses participated in the
Golden Apple Program last school year, one of the important
education initiatives supported by the chamber’s Business
Education Partnership committee. With member support,
the Golden Apple Program gives a benefit card to all private
and public school personnel in Southern Beaufort County.
By helping our teachers, the schools and the community, the
Golden Apple Program has already earned itself an A.+
If you would like to be a member of the Golden Apple Program,
contact Sandy McGuire at (843) 341-8374 or smcguire@

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Sean Custer’s
A Southern Sign & Awning Co.
How many signs can you make in one year? More than 5,000,
according to Sean Custer of A Southern Sign & Awning Co. You
may have seen some of them rolling down the road, on everything
from Carolina Towing vehicles to Lowcountry golf carts.
A Southern Sign & Awning Co. has been open for business for
nearly 10 years, and they’ve clearly been making their mark
in the Lowcountry. Specializing in custom design, distinctive
commercial signs and vehicle graphics, this one-stop shop has
created quite a name for itself.
“Friendly personal care, innovative, high-tech equipment and
quality service says it all,” said Custer. “We have a full range of
products including digital imaging and laser engraving. With
design services for all business needs from logos, to business
cards and custom apparel, we’ve got you covered.”
