Aberdeen programme 2014 - The City of Aberdeen Clydesdale
Collessie Robyn Overall Show Champion 2013 SATURDAY 30TH AUGUST 2014 32ND ANNIVERSARY SHOW For those of us who have been involved with The City of Aberdeen Clydesdale Show from the very beginnings we can hardly believe that all these years have raced by, but it is with great pleasure that we welcome you all to the 32nd Anniversary Show. The Show was given birth to by the Events Department of the City of Aberdeen Council who organised and planned it for much of its history until they handed it over to a group of north-east Clydesdale enthusiasts a handful of years ago. We still, however, receive much support from the Council, for which we are extremely grateful as this enables us to hold the event in such a wonderful setting as the Duthie Park, which is a very fitting venue in which to showcase a truly wonderful breed of horse and one which is so iconic to Scotland and its heritage. Fom its inception the Show had a key element, a competition to find the Clydesdale “Champion of Champions” for which only horses that had won a championship at any show throughout Scotland were eligible. Ten years ago this was dropped from the schedule, but it has been re-introduced for 2014 and long term exhibitor John Anderson of the Redcastle Clydesdale Stud has gifted a beautiful Silver Claret Jug Trophy in memory of his mare Redcastle Alena, a prolific show mare who lifted the Champion of Champions title in 2000, 2001 and 2004. Events such as this would be impossible to stage without the financial underpinning given by Sponsors. We have been fortunate over the years to have had a number of very loyal companies and individuals who have been generous in their support. Malcolm Allan Housebuilders of Kintore are again our major sponsor, Overton Dismantlers are sponsoring the Champion of Champions, and other sponsors include Galcantray Clydesdales, W N Lindsay, LAS Plant Hire, The Noble Family, IMF Technical, Cumbrian Heavy Horses, Strathorn Farm, Hugh & Margaret Merchant, Adler & Allan, Irvine Arms, Chloros Environmental, Rix Petroleum, Guthrie Brothers, Andrew & Shonah Campbell, Alan & Amanda Merchant and Groundwater Lift Trucks. We are delighted to welcome new sponsors Andrew Scott, Norvite, Jim Urquhart, Robertson Coaches, and Alastair Webster. The Committee is very pleased to have been able once more to make this a ‘free to attend’ event for the public, as we know that the good folk of Aberdeen (as well as many who travel considerable distances to come to the show including several who come in from abroad) just love to be able to walk into one of ‘their’ parks and be able to get up very close and personal to all the horses and their owners. It can be challenging in these times to be able to sustain this and so if any of you attending would like to give a donation or offer support please pop into the Organiser’s tent. Speed, service and environmental integrity • Environmental Services • Specialist Fuel Services • Mechanical & Electrical Services • Forecourt Services The Show committee have put in countless hours of hard work (all of it unpaid!) and they have dragooned friends and family to assist them as stewards - immense gratitude must go to all these folk. Judging starts at 10am and the day concludes with the Grand Parade and Prize Giving at 4pm and we hope the sun will shine upon us! Bon-Accord:Happy to Meet…Sorry to Part… Happy to Meet Again. HEALTH & SAFETY STATEMENT The Committee recognises and accepts its responsibility for providing a safe and healthy show site and working environment for all stand holders, exhibitors, helpers and visiting public. It is their first intention to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of all stand holders, exhibitors, helpers and members of the public. The Committee also wishes to point out that everyone attending the event, including all visitors and members of the public have a duty and responsibility to ensure their own safety and of others around them. 0800 592 827 www.adlerandallan.co.uk We welcome and thank you for your co-operation towards that aim. As the name suggests, the breed’s roots are in the hinterland of the River Clyde in the county of Lanarkshire. It is said that the smaller native mares were mated to some splendid Flemish stallions belonging to the Duke of Hamilton and a larger horse capable of heavy draught work resulted. These horses were in great demand, and at the annual sales in Lanark many hundreds of horses changed hands not just to local buyers. The Clydesdale Horse became popular in the north of England and the north of Ireland, as well as across the rest of Scotland. Given their capabilities, in addition to their pivotal role in the farming communities, the horses were used in industry as well as for carting within major cities. The fame of the horses also spread across the world, with many being exported by sea to America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Once the Society was formed in 1877, the gentlemen in charge began to make a record of the breeding of the horses to be contained within a stud book. The first retrospective book appeared in 1878 and since then a stud book has been produced almost every year, with the exception of the time the popularity and necessity of such horses took a dip when mechanism took over. At that time many breeders just gave up and the breed was almost at extinction levels. However some breeders kept going, out of sentimentality rather than expecting a return on the animals, and gradually the popularity of these lovely horses has grown again. However the breed is still recognized rare breed, designated so by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and because of this status, the Clydesdale Horse Society receives an annual grant from the Horserace Betting Levy Board, this being engineered to improve the breed essentially by way of stallion premium schemes. The Clydesdale Horse The Clydesdale Horse Society As well as being used for showing, the Clydesdale is also to be seen pulling drays, taking brides to church and increasingly as a riding horse. This latter occupation has brought the breed to the notice of a whole new ‘audience’ both in the UK and in Europe. In showing, a judge will look at a number of key points on the horse. When moving, they should lift their feet cleanly off the ground so that someone standing behind it can see the inside of every shoe. The hind legs should be close together, with the points of the hocks turning inwards rather than straight, pasterns should be long and set at an angle from the hoofhead to the fetlock, and the neck should be well arched ascending from an oblique shoulder with high withers. The horses should be broad in front and they should have a good deep body. Purists prefer horses of good solid colour, with four white legs to above the knees and hocks, with a broad white blaze on the face. However increasingly the horses have more white on their bodies, with many being a roan colour, where white hair blends with the basic colour to produce a marbled effect. The judges will also be looking for quality, style and fluidity of movement and in the case of the females, femininity is a requisite. The Clydesdale Horse Society The Clydedale Horse The Clydesdale Horse The Society is governed by a Council of around 50 who represent the membership from 15 Areas within the UK and Ireland. The Secretary is Marguerite Osborne. She can be contacted at: Kinclune, Kingoldrum, Kirriemuir, Angus, DD8 5HX Tel: 01575 570 900 Email: secretary@clydesdalehorsesociety.com The Clydesdale Horse Society Show Rules & Regulations Entries should be made only using the Entry Forms in this pack or from the website. Entry fees are £5 per exhibit – Horses shown in-hand will not need to pay a second entry fee to enter the Harness classes, Ridden Class, Mare & Foal & Pairs Classes. If however, the horse is not shown in-hand, the exhibitor must pay an entry fee for these classes. There is no entry fee for the Young Judges and Young Handlers classes. All horses must be pure bred Clydesdales, registered or eligible to be registered in the Clydesdale Horse Society stud book. All horses shown must be sound and fit to enter the ring. No stabling is available. All exhibitors at the Show attend at their own risk. The City of Aberdeen Clydesdale Horse Show does not accept responsibility for any accident, loss or damage to person(s), animals or property at the Show or in transit to the Show, simply by virtue of the committee’s organisation of the Show. It is also the recommendation of the committee that all exhibitors ensure that their animals have their own insurance policy. Judging to commence at 10am (prompt). Exhibitors are required to wear white coats in the show ring and failure to do so will lead to disqualification. Horses entering the show ring will only be accompanied by one exhibitor and one groom. No other person(s) will be allowed in the show ring. Nobody under the age of 12 is permitted within the Show ring, all exhibitors and grooms must be over 12 years old to enter the Show ring. All horses will only qualify for prize monies after taking part in the Grand Parade at approximately 4.00pm. Failure to parade will forfeit prize monies. All trophies are now Perpetual Trophies and therefore must be returned to the Show each year. The Clydesdale Horse Society Shield and the Young Handlers Competitions are subject to the current Clydesdale Horse Society Rules as set out below. In the event of a dispute, official complaints should be submitted in writing along with £25 to the City of Aberdeen Clydesdale Horse Show committee who shall be the sole arbiter. Exhibitors are required to ensure they leave NO rubbish or dung when leaving the Show, black bags will be provided. The committee reserve the right to amalgamate any class or classes where the number of entries forward on the day of the show merit such action. Only vehicles displaying official passes will be allowed into the show ground. Disabled parking by prior arrangement. The committee wish to advise exhibitors that it is an offence to consume alcohol in public places within Aberdeen. Handlers may compete in any number of Young Handlers classes in any year but they may only qualify once in any given year. If the handlers placed in the class have already qualified in 2014 then the qualifying place must go down the line to the first available non-qualifier. Only animals that have already competed in the normal show or ridden classes may be used in the class. No entire colts are allowed. Judging of this class is not on the merits of the animals – it is to be on the quality of the stockmanship, showmanship and handling in the show ring by the young handler. Entrants must be suitably dressed. Entrants will be expected to walk and trot their animals as requested. No outside assistance should be given unless in difficulties. Grooms must stay out of the circle of the ring. Young handlers may still compete in the final at The Royal Highland Show although they may be aged 17 by that point. The qualifying cut-off date is the actual day of the affiliated show.
